Shrinking Schauder Frames and their Associated Bases

For a Banach space $X$ with a shrinking Schauder frame $(x_i,f_i)$ we provide an explicit method for constructing a shrinking associated basis. In the case that the minimal associated basis is not shrinking, we prove that every shrinking associated basis of $(x_i,f_i)$ dominates an uncountable family of incomparable shrinking associated bases of $(x_i,f_i)$. By adapting a construction of Pełczy{ń}ski, we characterize spaces with shrinking Schauder frames as spaces having the $w^*$-bounded approximation property.

Closed ideals of operators on the Tsirelson and Schreier spaces

Let $\mathscr{B}(X)$ denote the Banach algebra of bounded operators on $X$, where~$X$ is either Tsirelson's Banach space or the Schreier space of order $n$ for some $n\in\mathbb N$. We show that the lattice of closed ideals of~$\mathscr{B}(X)$ has a very rich structure; in particular $\mathscr{B}(X)$ contains at least continuum many maximal ideals. Our approach is to study the closed ideals generated by the basis projections. Indeed, the unit vector basis is an unconditional basis for each of the above spaces, so there is a basis projection $P_N\in\mathscr{B}(X)$ corresponding to each non-empty subset $N$ of $\mathbb N$. A closed ideal of $\mathscr{B}(X)$ is spatial if it is generated by $P_N$ for some $N$. We can now state our main conclusions as follows: i) the family of spatial ideals lying strictly between the ideal of compact operators and $\mathscr{B}(X)$ is non-empty and has no minimal or maximal elements; ii) for each pair $\mathscr{I}\subsetneqq\mathscr{J}$ of spatial ideals, there is a family $\{Γ_L\colon L\in Δ\}$, where the index set $Δ$ has the cardinality of the continuum, such that $Γ_L$ is an uncountable chain of spatial ideals, $\bigcupΓ_L$ is a closed ideal that is not spatial, and $$ \mathscr{I}\subsetneqq\mathscr{L}\subsetneqq\mathscr{J}\qquad\text{and}\qquad \overline{\mathscr{L}+\mathscr{M}} = \mathscr{J}$$ whenever $L,M\inΔ$ are distinct and $\mathscr{L}\inΓ_L$, $\mathscr{M}\inΓ_M$.

On a generalization of Bourgain's tree index

For a Banach space $X$, a sequence of Banach spaces $(Y_n)$, and a Banach space $Z$ with an unconditional basis, D. Alspach and B. Sari introduced a generalization of a Bourgain tree called a $(\oplus_n Y_n)_Z$-tree in $X$. These authors also prove that any separable Banach space admitting a $(\oplus_n Y_n)_Z$-tree with order $ω_1$ admits a subspace isomorphic to $(\oplus_n Y_n)_Z$. In this paper we give two new proofs of this result.

Classes of operators determined by ordinal indices

We introduce and study the Bourgain index of an operator between two Banach spaces. In particular, we study the Bourgain $\ell_p$ and $c_0$ indices of an operator. Several estimates for finite and infinite direct sums are established. We define classes determined by these indices and show that some of these classes form operator ideals. We characterize the ordinals which occur as the index of an operator and establish exactly when the defined classes are closed. We study associated indices for non-preservation of $\ell_p^ξ$ and $c_0^ξ$ spreading models and indices characterizing weak compactness of operators between separable Banach spaces. We also show that some of these classes are operator ideals and discuss closedness and distinctness of these classes.

On Scottish Book Problem 157

This paper describes our hunt for the solver of Problem 157 in the Scottish Book, a problem originally posed by A.~J. (Gus) Ward in 1937. We first make the observation that a theorem of Richard O'Malley from 1975 yields an immediate positive solution. A further look at O'Malley's references revealed a 1970 paper by Donald Ornstein that we now believe contains the first solution of {\em SB 157}. We isolate the common elements in the machinery used by both Ornstein and O'Malley and discuss several consequences. We also examine an example function given by Ornstein. There are some difficulties with this function but we provide a fix, and show moreover that functions of that kind are typical in the sense of the Baire category theorem.

Arbitrarily distortable Banach spaces of higher order

We study an ordinal rank on the class of Banach spaces with bases that quantifies the distortion of the norm of a given Banach space. The rank $AD(\cdot)$, introduced by P. Dodos, uses the transfinite Schreier familes and has the property that $AD(X) < ω_1$ if and only if $X$ is arbitrarily distortable. We prove several properties of this rank as well as some new results concerning higher order $\ell_1$ spreading models. We also compute this rank for for several Banach spaces. In particular, it is shown that class of Banach spaces $\mathfrak{X}^{ω^ξ}_{0,1}$ , which each admit $\ell_1$ and $c_0$ spreading models hereditarily, and were introduced by S.A. Argyros, the first and third author, satisfy $AD(\mathfrak{X}^{ω^ξ}_{0,1}) = ω^ξ+ 1$. This answers some questions of Dodos.

The stabilized set of $p$'s in Krivine's theorem can be disconnected

For any closed subset $F$ of $[1,\infty]$ which is either finite or consists of the elements of an increasing sequence and its limit, a reflexive Banach space $X$ with a 1-unconditional basis is constructed so that in each block subspace $Y$ of $X$, $\ell_p$ is finitely block represented in $Y$ if and only if $p \in F$. In particular, this solves the question as to whether the stabilized Krivine set for a Banach space had to be connected. We also prove that for every infinite dimensional subspace $Y$ of $X$ there is a dense subset $G$ of $F$ such that the spreading models admitted by $Y$ are exactly the $\ell_p$ for $p\in G$.

Strictly singular operators in Tsirelson like spaces

For each $n \in \mathbb{N}$ a Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$ is constructed is having the property that every normalized weakly null sequence generates either a $c_0$ or $\ell_1$ spreading models and every infinite dimensional subspace has weakly null sequences generating both $c_0$ and $\ell_1$ spreading models. The space $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$ is also quasiminimal and for every infinite dimensional closed subspace $Y$ of $\mathfrak{X}_{0,1}^n$, for every $S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_{n+1}$ strictly singular operators on $Y$, the operator $S_1S_2\cdots S_{n+1}$ is compact. Moreover, for every subspace $Y$ as above, there exist $S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_n$ strictly singular operators on $Y$, such that the operator $S_1S_2\cdots S_n$ is non-compact.

Uniformly factoring weakly compact operators

Let $X$ and $Y$ be separable Banach spaces. Suppose $Y$ either has a shrinking basis or $Y$ is isomorphic to $C(2^\mathbb{N})$ and $A$ is a subset of weakly compact operators from $X$ to $Y$ which is analytic in the strong operator topology. We prove that there is a reflexive space with a basis $Z$ such that every $T \in A$ factors through $Z$. Likewise, we prove that if $A \subset L(X, C(2^\mathbb{N}))$ is a set of operators whose adjoints have separable range and is analytic in the strong operator topology then there is a Banach space $Z$ with separable dual such that every $T \in A$ factors through $Z$. Finally we prove a uniformly version of this result in which we allow the domain and range spaces to vary.

Upper and lower estimates for schauder frames and atomic decompositions

We prove that a Schauder frame for any separable Banach space is shrinking if and only if it has an associated space with a shrinking basis, and that a Schauder frame for any separable Banach space is shrinking and boundedly complete if and only if it has a reflexive associated space. To obtain these results, we prove that the upper and lower estimate theorems for finite dimensional decompositions of Banach spaces can be extended and modified to Schauder frames. We show as well that if a separable infinite dimensional Banach space has a Schauder frame, then it also has a Schauder frame which is not shrinking.

On spaces admitting no $\ell_p$ or $c_0$ spreading model

It is shown that for each separable Banach space $X$ not admitting $\ell_1$ as a spreading model there is a space $Y$ having $X$ as a quotient and not admitting any $\ell_p$ for $1 \leq p < \infty$ or $c_0$ as a spreading model. We also include the solution to a question of W.B. Johnson and H.P. Rosenthal on the existence of a separable space not admitting as a quotient any space with separable dual.

On strictly singular operators between separable Banach spaces

Let $X$ and $Y$ be separable Banach spaces and denote by $\sss\sss(X,Y)$ the subset of $\llll(X,Y)$ consisting of all strictly singular operators. We study various ordinal ranks on the set $\sss\sss(X,Y)$. Our main results are summarized as follows. Firstly, we define a new rank $\rs$ on $\sss\sss(X,Y)$. We show that $\rs$ is a co-analytic rank and that dominates the rank $\varrho$ introduced by Androulakis, Dodos, Sirotkin and Troitsky [Israel J. Math., 169 (2009), 221-250]. Secondly, for every $1\leq p<+\infty$ we construct a Banach space $Y_p$ with an unconditional basis such that $\sss\sss(\ell_p, Y_p)$ is a co-analytic non-Borel subset of $\llll(\ell_p,Y_p)$ yet every strictly singular operator $T:\ell_p\to Y_p$ satisfies $\varrho(T)\leq 2$. This answers a question of Argyros.
