Tilted black-Si: ~0.45 form-birefringence from sub-wavelength needles

The self-organised conical needles produced by plasma etching of silicon (Si), known as black silicon (b-Si), create a form-birefringent surface texture when etching of Si orientated at angles of $θ_i < 50 - 70^\circ$ (angle between the Si surface and vertical plasma E-field). The height of the needles in the form-birefringent region following 15~min etching was $d\sim 200$ nm and had a 100 $μ$m width of the optical retardance/birefringence, characterised using polariscopy. The height of the b-Si needles corresponds closely to the skin-depth of Si $\simλ/4$ for the visible spectral range. Reflection-type polariscope with a voltage-controlled liquid-crystal retarder is proposed to directly measure the retardance $Δn\times d/λ\approx 0.15$ of the region with tilted b-Si needles. The quantified form birefringence of $Δn = - 0.45$ over $λ= 400-700$~nm spectral window was obtained. Such high values of $Δn$ at visible wavelengths can only be observed in the most birefringence calcite or barium borate as well as in liquid crystals. The replication of b-Si into Ni-shim with high fidelity was also demonstrated and can be used for imprinting of the b-Si nanopattern into other materials.

Formation of high-order acoustic Bessel beams by spiral diffraction gratings

The formation of high-order Bessel beams by a passive acoustic device consisting of an Archimedes' spiral diffraction grating is theoretically, numerically and experimentally reported in this work. These beams are propagation-invariant solutions of the Helmholtz equation and are characterized by an azimuthal variation of the phase along its annular spectrum producing an acoustic vortex in the near field. In our system, the scattering of plane acoustic waves by the spiral grating leads to the formation of the acoustic vortex with zero pressure on-axis and the angular phase dislocations characterized by the spiral geometry. The order of the generated Bessel beam and, as a consequence, the size of the generated vortex can be fixed by the number of arms in the spiral diffraction grating. The obtained results allow to obtain Bessel beams with controllable vorticity by a passive device, which has potential applications in low-cost acoustic tweezers and acoustic radiation force devices.

Stable radiating gap solitons and their resonant interactions with dispersive waves in systems with parametric pump

We study the formation of gap solitons in the presence of parametric pump. It is shown that parametric pump can stabilize stationary solitons continuously emitting dispersive waves. The resonant interactions of the radiation and the solitons are studied and it is shown that the solitons can be effectively controlled by the radiation. In particular it is shown that the solitons can collide or to get pinned to inhomogeneities due to the interactions mediated by the resonant radiation.

Double-discrete solitons in fishnet arrays of optical fibers

We demonstrate that crossed arrays of optical fibers support the double-discrete linear and nonlinear propagation of light beams, in which not only the transverse coordinate (the fiber's number) is discrete, but also the longitudinal (propagation) coordinate, i.e., the number of the fiber-crossing site, is effectively discrete too. In the linear limit, this transmission regime features double-discrete self-collimation. The nonlinear fishnet arrays with both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities give rise to double-discrete spatial solitons. Solitons bifurcating from two different branches of the linear dispersion relation feature strong interactions and form composite states. In the continuum limit, the model of the nonlinear fishnet reduces to a system of coupled-mode equations similar to those describing Bragg gratings, but without the cross-phase-modulation terms.

Anisotropic Subdiffractive Solitons

We study solitons in the two-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the spatio-temporal modulation of the external potential. The spatial modulation is due to a square lattice; the resulting macroscopic diffraction is rotationally symmetric in the long-wavelength limit but becomes anisotropic for shorter wavelengths. Anisotropic solitons -- solitons with the square (x,y)-geometry -- are obtained both in the original nonlinear Schroedinger model and in its averaged amplitude equation.

Spatial filtering of light by chirped photonic crystals

We propose an efficient method for spatial filtering of light beams by propagating them through 2D (also 3D) longitudinally chirped photonic crystals, i.e. through the photonic structures with fixed transverse lattice period and with the longitudinal lattice period varying along the direction of the beam propagation. We prove the proposed idea by numerically solving the paraxial propagation equation in refraction index-modulated media, and we evaluate the efficiency of the process by plane-wave-expansion analysis. The technique can be applied to filter (to clean) the packages of atomic waves (Bose condensates), as well improve the directionality of acoustic and mechanical waves.

Nondiffractive sonic crystals

We predict theoretically the nondiffractive propagation of sonic waves in periodic acoustic media (sonic crystals), by expansion into a set of plane waves (Bloch mode expansion), and by finite difference time domain calculations of finite beams. We also give analytical evaluations of the parameters for nondiffractive propagation, as well as the minimum size of the nondiffractively propagating acoustic beams.

Spatial and Temporal Noise Spectra of Spatially Extended Systems with Order-Disorder Phase Transitions

The noise power spectra of spatially extended dynamical systems are investigated, using as a model the Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a stochastic term. Analytical and numerical investigations show that the spatial spectra of the ordered state are similar to Bose-Einstein distribution, showing 1/k^2 asymptotics in the long wavelength limit. The temporal noise spectra of the ordered state are obtained of 1/^alpha form, where alpha=2-D/2 with D the spatial dimension of the system.

Vortex Creation in Bose-Einstein Condensates by Laser Beam Vortex Guiding

A technique for vortex creation in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates is suggested: Vortices can be excited at the edge of a condensate and guided to the center by a laser beam moving along a spiral trajectory. Numerical simulations demonstrate the suggested technique. Parameter ranges for the method are given. Computer animations illustrate the dynamics of the guided vortices.
