Necessary and sufficient conditions to perform Spectral Tetris

Spectral Tetris has proved to be a powerful tool for constructing sparse equal norm Hilbert space frames. We introduce a new form of Spectral Tetris which works for non-equal norm frames. It is known that this method cannot construct all frames --- even in the new case introduced here. Until now, it has been a mystery as to why Spectral Tetris sometimes works and sometimes fails. We will give a complete answer to this mystery by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for Spectral Tetris to construct frames in all cases including equal norm frames, prescribed norm frames, frames with constant spectrum of the frame operator, and frames with prescribed spectrum for the frame operator. We present a variety of examples as well as special cases where Spectral Tetris always works.

Invariance of a Shift-Invariant Space

A shift-invariant space is a space of functions that is invariant under integer translations. Such spaces are often used as models for spaces of signals and images in mathematical and engineering applications. This paper characterizes those shift-invariant subspaces S that are also invariant under additional (non-integer) translations. For the case of finitely generated spaces, these spaces are characterized in terms of the generators of the space. As a consequence, it is shown that principal shift-invariant spaces with a compactly supported generator cannot be invariant under any non-integer translations.

Iterated function systems, moments, and transformations of infinite matrices

We study the moments of equilibrium measures for iterated function systems (IFSs) and draw connections to operator theory. Our main object of study is the infinite matrix which encodes all the moment data of a Borel measure on R^d or C. To encode the salient features of a given IFS into precise moment data, we establish an interdependence between IFS equilibrium measures, the encoding of the sequence of moments of these measures into operators, and a new correspondence between the IFS moments and this family of operators in Hilbert space. For a given IFS, our aim is to establish a functorial correspondence in such a way that the geometric transformations of the IFS turn into transformations of moment matrices, or rather transformations of the operators that are associated with them. We first examine the classical existence problem for moments, culminating in a new proof of the existence of a Borel measure on R or C with a specified list of moments. Next, we consider moment problems associated with affine and non-affine IFSs. Our main goal is to determine conditions under which an intertwining relation is satisfied by the moment matrix of an equilibrium measure of an IFS. Finally, using the famous Hilbert matrix as our prototypical example, we study boundedness and spectral properties of moment matrices viewed as Kato-Friedrichs operators on weighted l^2 spaces.

Orthogonal Exponentials for Bernoulli Iterated Function Systems

We investigate certain spectral properties of the Bernoulli convolution measures on attractor sets arising from iterated function systems on the real line. In particular, we examine collections of orthogonal exponential functions in the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on the attractor. We carefully examine a test case where the parameter lambda is equal to 3/4 and therefore the IFS has overlap. We also determine rational values of lambda for which infinite sets of orthogonal exponentials exist.

Rank-One Decomposition of Operators and Construction of Frames

The construction of frames for a Hilbert space H can be equated to the decomposition of the frame operator as a sum of positive operators having rank one. This realization provides a different approach to questions regarding frames with particular properties and motivates our results. We find a necessary and sufficient condition under which any positive finite-rank operator B can be expressed as a sum of rank-one operators with norms specified by a sequence of positive numbers {c_i}. Equivalently, this result proves the existence of a frame with B as it's frame operator and with vector norms given by the square roots of the sequence elements. We further prove that, given a non-compact positive operator B on an infinite dimensional separable real or complex Hilbert space, and given an infinite sequence {c_i} of positive real numbers which has infinite sum and which has supremum strictly less than the essential norm of B, there is a sequence of rank-one positive operators, with norms given by {c_i}, which sum to B in the strong operator topology. These results generalize results by Casazza, Kovacevic, Leon, and Tremain, in which the operator is a scalar multiple of the identity operator (or equivalently the frame is a tight frame), and also results by Dykema, Freeman, Kornelson, Larson, Ordower, and Weber in which {c_i} is a constant sequence.
