Nonlinear resonant X-ray Raman scattering

We report the observation of a novel nonlinear effect in the hard x-ray range. Upon illuminating Fe and Cu metal foils with intense x-ray pulses tuned near their respective K edges, photons at nearly twice the incoming photon energy are emitted. The signal rises quadratically with the incoming intensity, consistent with two-photon excitation. The spectrum of emitted high-energy photons comprises multiple Raman lines that disperse with the incident photon energy. Upon reaching the double K-shell ionization threshold, the signal strength undergoes a marked rise. Above this threshold, the lines cease dispersing, turning into orescence lines with energies much greater than obtainable by single electron transitions, and additional Raman lines appear. We attribute these processes to electron-correlation mediated multielectron transitions involving double-core hole excitation and various two-electron de-excitation processes to a final state involving one or more L and M core-holes.

Ultrafast demagnetization of Pt magnetic moment in L1${}_0$-FePt probed by hard x-ray free electron laser

We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $τ_\textrm{Pt} = 0.6\ \textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $τ_\textrm{total} = 0.1\ \textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demonstrated.

Evidence for Gamma_8 Ground-State Symmetry of Cubic YbB12 Probed by Linear Dichroism in Core-Level Photoemission

We have successfully observed linear dichroism in angle-resolved Yb3+ 3d5/2 core-level photoemission spectra for YbB12 in cubic symmetry. Its anisotropic 4f charge distribution due to the crystal-field splitting is responsible for the linear dichroism, which has been verified by spectral simulations using ionic calculations with the full multiplet theory for a single-site Yb3+ ion in cubic symmetry. The observed linear dichroism as well as the polarization-dependent spectra in two different photoelectron directions for YbB12 are quantitatively reproduced by theoretical analysis for the Gamma_8 ground state, indicating the Gamma_8 ground-state symmetry for the Yb3+ ions mixed with the Yb2+ state.

Explaining the x-ray nonlinear susceptibility of diamond and silicon near absorption edges

We report the observation and the theoretical explanation of the parametric down-conversion nonlinear susceptibility at the $K$-absorption edge of diamond and at the $L_{23}$-absorption edge of a silicon crystal. Using arguments similar to those invoked to successfully predict resonant inelastic x-ray spectra, we derive an expression for the renormalization term of the non-linear susceptibility at the x-ray edges, which can be evaluated by using first-principles calculations of the atomic scattering factor $f_1$. Our model is shown to reproduce the observed enhancement of the parametric down-conversion at the diamond $K$ and the Si $L_{23}$ edges rather than the suppression previously claimed.

Probing Strongly Correlated 4f-Orbital Symmetry of the Ground State in Yb Compounds by Linear Dichroism in Core-Level Photoemission

We show that the strongly correlated 4f-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra as we have discovered for YbRh2Si2 and YbCu2Si2. Theoretical analysis tells us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4f symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle-resolved core-level spectra at a low temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measuring temperatures are of the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies.

Polaronic behavior of photoelectron spectra of Fe3O4 revealed by both hard X-ray and extremely low energy photons

Hard X-ray and extremely low energy bulk-sensitive photoelectron spectroscopy has been performed in the temperature range of 100-330 K for Fe3O4. In the high temperature phase just above the Verwey transition, the intensity at the Fermi level (EF) is still negligible, but it increases gradually with further increasing the temperature (250 K, 330 K) in consistence with the temperature dependence of the conductivity. The spectral behaviors near EF with temperature are well explained by the model, which takes the polaron effect into account.
