Slow Electronic Dynamics in the Paramagnetic State of UTe$_2$

$^{125}$Te NMR experiments in field ($H$) applied along the easy magnetization axis (the $a$-axis) revealed slow electronic dynamics developing in the paramagnetic state of UTe$_2$. The observed slow fluctuations are concerned with a successive growth of long-range electronic correlations below 30$-$40 K, where the spin susceptibility along the hard magnetization axis (the $b$-axis) shows a broad maximum. The experiments also imply that tiny amounts of disorder or defects locally disturb the long-range electronic correlations and develop an inhomogeneous electronic state at low temperatures, leading to a low temperature upturn observed in the bulk-susceptibility in $H\|a$. We suggest that UTe$_2$ would be located on the paramagnetic side near an electronic phase boundary, where either magnetic or Fermi-surface instability would be the origin of the characteristic fluctuations.

Superconducting order parameter in UTe$_2$ determined by Knight shift measurement

This study investigates the spin susceptibility in U-based superconductor UTe$_2$ in the superconducting (SC) state by using Knight shift measurements for a magnetic field $H$ along the $a$ axis, which is the magnetic easy axis of UTe$_2$. Although a tiny anomaly ascribed to the SC diamagnetic effect was observed just below the SC transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, the $a$-axis Knight shift in the SC state shows no significant decrease, following the extrapolation from the normal-state temperature dependence. This indicates that the spin susceptibility is nearly unchanged below $T_{\rm c}$. Considering the previous Knight shift results for $H \parallel b$ and $H \parallel c$, the dominant SC state is determined to be $B_{\rm 3u}$ in the spin-triplet pairing, which is consistent with the spin anisotropy in the normal state. The present result shows that UTe$_2$ is a spin-triplet superconductor with spin degrees of freedom.

Two-dimensional XY-type Magnetic Properties of Locally Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CeRh$_2$As$_2$

We performed $^{75}$As-NMR measurements to investigate the normal-state magnetic properties of CeRh$_2$As$_2$, a recently-discovered heavy-fermion superconductor. The magnitude and temperature dependence of the Knight shift at the As(2) site indicate easy-plane-type magnetic anisotropy in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. With regard to spin fluctuations, the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ arising from the 4$f$ electrons decreases from high-temperature constant behavior on cooling at $\sim$ 40~K, which is typical behavior of heavy-fermion systems. In addition, $1/T_1$ becomes constant at low temperatures, suggesting spatially two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Two-dimensional magnetic correlations in the real space are quite rare among heavy-fermion superconductors, and they may be a key factor in the unique superconducting multi-phase in CeRh$_2$As$_2$.

$^{139}$La-NMR study of spin-dynamics coupled with hole mobility in $T$*-type La$_{0.86}$Eu$_{0.86}$Sr$_{0.28}$CuO$_{4-δ}$

In $T$*-type cuprate oxides with five oxygen coordination, little is known about the relationship between the spin correlations and dope carriers. We performed $^{139}$La-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrical resistivity measurements on an as-sintered (AS) and oxidation annealed (OA) polycrystalline $T$*-type La$_{0.86}$Eu$_{0.86}$S$_{0.28}$CuO$_4$ (LESCO) to investigate its magnetic and superconducting (SC) properties. Upon cooling, the NMR spectrum of AS LESCO broadened below 3 K, at which the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ against the temperature exhibited a maximum, thereby indicating the appearance of static magnetism. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ between 3 K and 20 K was similar to that of the resistivity displaying the semiconducting behavior. Furthermore, the energy scale of the transport gap and spin-dynamics estimated was found to be comparable. These results suggest a close connection between the mobility of the doped carriers and low-energy spin-dynamics, as reported for lightly doped $T$-type La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. In the OA SC sample, we confirmed the absence of a magnetic order and the Korringa relation above 10 K. Therefore, in the $T$*-type LESCO with $x$ = 0.28, the magnetic state coupled with holes drastically turns to the weakly correlated metallic state by oxidation annealing.

Observation of antiferromagnetic order as odd-parity multipoles inside the superconducting phase in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Spatial inversion symmetry in crystal structures is closely related to the superconducting (SC) and magnetic properties of materials. Recently, several theoretical proposals that predict various interesting phenomena caused by the breaking of the local inversion symmetry have been presented. However, experimental validation has not yet progressed owing to the lack of model materials. Here we present evidence for antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (SC transition temperature $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.37$~K), wherein the Ce site breaks the local inversion symmetry. The evidence is based on the observation of different extents of broadening of the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrum at two crystallographically inequivalent As sites. This AFM ordering breaks the inversion symmetry of this system, resulting in the activation of an odd-parity magnetic multipole. Moreover, the onset of antiferromagnetism $T_{\rm N}$ within an SC phase, with $T_{\rm N} < T_{\rm SC}$, is quite unusual in systems wherein superconductivity coexists or competes with magnetism. Our observations show that CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is a promising system to study how the absence of local inversion symmetry induces or influences unconventional magnetic and SC states, as well as their interaction.

Magnetic-Field Dependence of Novel Gap Behavior Related to the Quantum-Size Effect

$^{195}$Pt-NMR measurements of Pt nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 4.0 nm were performed in a high magnetic field of approximately $μ_0 H = 23.3$ T to investigate the low-temperature electronic state of the nanoparticles. The characteristic temperature $T^*$, below which the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ deviates from the relaxation rate of the bulk, shows a magnetic-field dependence. This dependence supports the theoretical prediction of the appearance of discrete energy levels.

NMR-based gap behavior related to the quantum size effect

We conducted$^{195}$Pt-nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on various-diameter Pt nanoparticles coated with polyvinylpyrrolidone in order to detect the quantum size effect and the discrete energy levels in the electron density of states, both of which were predicted by Kubo more than 50 years ago. We succeeded in separating the signals arising from the surface and interior regions and found that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates in both regions show the metallic behavior at high temperatures. Surprisingly, the magnetic fluctuations in both regions exhibited anomalous behavior below the same temperature $T^*$, which points to a clear size dependence and is well scaled with $δ_\mathrm{Kubo}$. These results suggest that a size-tunable metal-insulator transition occurs in the Pt nanoparticles as a result of the Kubo effect.

Reduction of the $^{17}$O Knight shift in the Superconducting State and the Heat-up Effect by NMR Pulses on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

Quite recently, a pronounced drop of $^{17}$O NMR Knight shift in the superconducting (SC) state of an unstrained Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ was reported by Pustogow and Luo ${\it et al.}$ They revealed such behavior from the free-induction decay (FID) signal after a weak RF pulse. We examined this behavior with our single-crystalline Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, and reproduced their result: the peaks of the $^{17}$O-NMR spectra shift in the SC state as long as the RF-pulse power is smaller than a threshold. Furthermore, we measured the temperature variation of the Knight shift by a standard spin-echo method with small-power RF pulses, and found that the spin susceptibility decreases in the SC state. We conclude that our previous results of the invariance of the Knight shift in the SC state were due to instantaneous destruction of superconductivity by the RF pulses. The heat-up effect was characterized by the temperature variation of the Knight shift under various measurement conditions.

Variation in Superconducting Symmetry against Pressure on Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$ Revealed by $^{185/187}$Re Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

We performed $^{185/187}$Re nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure to investigate the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric superconductor Cd$_{2}$Re$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under various crystal structures. The pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ determined through ac susceptibility measurements is consistent with the results of previous resistivity measurements [T. C. Kobayashi $et al$., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 80, 023715 (2011).]. Below 2.2 GPa, in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$, a clear coherence peak was observed just below $T_{\rm c}$, indicating conventional $s$-wave superconductivity. In contrast, the coherence peak disappears at 3.1 GPa, suggesting a change in superconducting symmetry to the $p$-wave dominant state against pressure.

Search for the field-induced magnetic instability around the upper critical field of superconductivity in H || c in CeCoIn5

We present nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) at the Co site and ac-susceptibility results in the normal and superconducting (SC) states of CeCoIn5 for H || c near the SC upper critical field Hc2 above 0.1 K. At 4.2 T, 1/T1 rapidly decreases below the SC transition temperature, consistent with the previous reports. Although the field dependence of 1/T1T at 0.1 K shows a peak at 5.2 T above Hc2, the temperature dependence of 1/T1T at 5.2 T is independent of temperature below 0.2 K, showing a Fermi-liquid behavior. In addition, we found no NMR-spectrum broadening by the appearance of internal fields around Hc2 at 0.1 K. We could not detect any field-induced magnetic instability around Hc2 down to 0.1 K although the remarkable non-Fermi-liquid behavior towards Hc2 was observed in various physical quantities.

Absence of $^{17}$O Knight-Shift Changes across the First-Order Phase Transition Line in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We performed $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on superconducting (SC) Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under in-plane magnetic fields. We found that no new signal appears in the SC state and that the $^{17}$O Knight shifts obtained from the double-site measurements remain constant across the first-order phase-transition line, as well as across the second-order phase-transition line as already reported. The present results indicate that the SC spin susceptibility does not decrease in the high-field region, although a magnetization jump in the SC state was reported at low temperatures. Because the spin susceptibility is unchanged in the SC state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we suggest that the first-order phase transition across the upper critical field should be interpreted as a depairing mechanism other than the conventional Pauli-paramagnetic effect.

Effect of Geomagnetism on 101Ru Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Measurements of CeRu2

We performed 101Ru nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the s-wave superconductor CeRu2 and found oscillatory behavior in the spin-echo amplitude at the +-1/2 <-> +-3/2 transitions but not at the +-3/2 <-> +-5/2 transitions. The modulation disappears in the superconducting state or in a magnetic shield, which implies a geomagnetic field effect. Our results indicate that the NQR spin-echo decay curve at the +-1/2 <-> +-3/2 transitions is sensitive to a weak magnetic field.

Emergence of Orbital Nematicity in the Tetragonal Phase of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We report on $^{75}$As-NMR measurements in single crystalline BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.96}$P$_{0.04}$)$_{2}$ for magnetic fields parallel to the orthorhombic $[110]_{\rm o}$ and $[100]_{\rm o}$ directions above the structural transition temperature $T_{\rm S}\simeq121$ K. A large difference in the linewidth between the two field directions reveals in-plane anisotropy of the electric field gradient, even in the tetragonal phase. This provides microscopic evidence of population imbalance between As-$4p_{x}$ and $4p_{y}$ orbitals, which reaches $|n_x-n_y|/|n_x+n_y| \sim 15$\% at $T\rightarrow T_{\rm S}$ and is a natural consequence of the orbital ordering of Fe-3$d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ electrons. Surprisingly, this orbital polarization is found to be already static near room temperature, suggesting that it arises from the pinning of anisotropic orbital fluctuations by disorder. The effect is found to be stronger below $\sim 160$ K, which coincides with the appearance of nematicity in previous torque and photoemission measurements. These results impose strong constraints on microscopic models of the nematic state.

Ferromagnetic Critical Behavior in U(Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)Al ($0 \leq x \leq 0.02$) Studied by $^{59}$Co Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Measurement

In order to investigate physical properties around a ferromagnetic (FM) quantum transition point and a tricritical point (TCP) in the itinerant-electron metamagnetic compound UCoAl, we have performed the $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurement for the Fe-substituted U(Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)Al ($x$ = 0, 0.5, 1, and 2%) in zero external magnetic field. The Fe concentration dependence of $^{59}$Co-NQR spectra at low temperatures indicates that the first-order FM transition occurs at least above $x$ = 1%. The magnetic fluctuations along the $c$ axis detected by the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate $1/T_2$ exhibit an anomaly at $T_\mathrm{max}$ $\sim$ 20 K and enhance with increasing $x$. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and indicate the presence of prominent critical fluctuations at the TCP in this system.

Suppression of Nonmagnetic Insulating State by Application of Pressure in Mineral Tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$

The mineral tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ exhibits a first-order metal--insulator transition (MIT) at $T_{\rm MI}$ = 85 K and ambient pressure. We measured the $^{63}$Cu-NMR at ambient pressure and the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at high pressures. $^{63}$Cu-NMR results indicate a nonmagnetic insulating ground state in this compound. The MIT is monotonically suppressed by pressure and disappears at $\sim1.0$ GPa. Two other anomalies are observed in the resistivity measurements, and the pressure -- temperature phase diagram of Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ is constructed.

The interface between heavy fermions and normal electrons investigated by spatially-resolved nuclear magnetic resonance

We have studied the superlattices with alternating block layers (BLs) of heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 and conventional-metal YbCoIn5 by site-selective nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) spectroscopy, which uniquely offers spatially-resolved dynamical magnetic information. We find that the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations is confined to the Ce-BLs, indicating that magnetic degrees of freedom of f-electrons are quenched inside the Yb-BLs. Contrary to simple expectations that the two-dimensionalization enhances fluctuations, we observe that antiferromagnetic fluctuations are rapidly suppressed with decreasing Ce-BL thickness. Moreover, the suppression is more prominent near the interfaces between the BLs. These results imply significant effects of local inversion-symmetry breaking at the interfaces.

Anisotropic Uniaxial Pressure Response in UCoAl Studied by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurement

We have performed nuclear quadrupole resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on UCoAl with strong Ising-type anisotropy under $b$- and $c$-axes uniaxial pressure. In the $b$-axis uniaxial pressure ($P_{\parallel b}$) measurement, we observed an increase in the metamagnetic transition field with increasing $P_{\parallel b}$. In the $c$-axis uniaxial pressure ($P_{\parallel c}$) measurement, on the other hand, we observed a ferromagnetic transition in zero magnetic field along the $c$-axis above $P_{\parallel c}$ = 0.08 GPa. The anomaly of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by the temperature $\left[ (T_1 T)^{-1} \right]$ at $T$ = 20 K is suppressed by $P_{\parallel b}$ and slightly enhanced by $P_{\parallel c}$. The anisotropic uniaxial pressure response indicates that uniaxial pressure is a good parameter for tuning the Ising magnetism in UCoAl.

Relationship between Ferromagnetic Criticality and the Enhancement of Superconductivity Induced by Transverse Magnetic Fields in UCoGe

We have performed 59Co NMR experiments on the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe under magnetic fields (H) along the a- and b- axes to investigate the relationship between ferromagnetic properties and superconductivity. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature TCurie is suppressed and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 at 2 K is enhanced in H || b, although TCurie and 1/T1 are unchanged in H || a, indicating that the ferromagnetic criticality is induced only when H is applied along the b axis. We show the close relationship between the magnetic anisotropies and the superconducting ones reported by Aoki et al.: the superconductivity is gradually suppressed in H || a, but enhanced in H || b above 5 T. We strongly suggest that the enhancement of the superconductivity observed in H || b originates from the field induced ferromagnetic criticality, as pointed out by Aoki et al and Mineev.

Relationship between Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in LaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O Revealed by $^{31}$P-NMR

We performed $^{31}$P-NMR measurements on LaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O to investigate the relationship between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ and the moment $μ_{\rm ord}$ are continuously suppressed with increasing P content $x$ and disappear at $x = 0.3$ where bulk superconductivity appears. At this superconducting $x = 0.3$, quantum critical AFM fluctuations are observed, indicative of the intimate relationship between superconductivity and low-energy AFM fluctuations associated with the quantum-critical point in LaFe(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O. The relationship is similar to those observed in other isovalent-substitution systems, e.g., BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ and SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$, with the "122" structure. Moreover, the AFM order reappears with further P substitution ($x > 0.4$). The variation of the ground state with respect to the P substitution is considered to be linked to the change in the band character of Fe-3$d$ orbitals around the Fermi level.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point Induced by Tuning the Magnetic Dimensionality of the Heavy-Fermion Iron Oxypnictide Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)PO

We have performed 31P-NMR measurements of the c-axis-aligned poly-crystal Ce(Ru1-xFex)PO with a two-dimensional layered structure in order to understand the origin of TCurie suppression by Fe substitution. The variation in the magnetic-fluctuation character with respect to x is investigated from the in-plane and out-of plane fluctuations and the relationship between the static spin susceptibility and the in-plane fluctuation. It was found that three-dimensional ferromagnetic (FM) correlations are dominant and give rise to the FM ordering in CeRuPO. The out-of-plane fluctuations are significantly suppressed with increasing x, and it was revealed that the FM fluctuations become two dimensional near a FM quantum critical point (QCP). Our NMR results strongly suggest that a unique FM QCP in Ce(Ru1-xFex)PO is induced by the suppression of the magnetic correlations along the c-axis, which is a different mechanism from that presumed in heavy-fermion compounds.

Spin-Density-Wave-Type Ordering of LaCoGe Revealed by ^{59}Co- and ^{139}La-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurements

The low-temperature magnetic properties of LaCoGe with the tetragonal CeFeSi-type structure were investigated by ^{59}Co- and ^{139}La-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by the temperature, 1/(T_1 T), gradually increases with decreasing temperature and shows a kink at approximately 18 K, below which an inhomogeneous internal field appears at the Co nuclear site. These results indicate that antiferromagnetic ordering occurs below T_N ~ 18 K. However, an internal field was not observed at the La nuclear site below T_N. Taking all NMR results into account, we conclude that spin-density-wave (SDW)-type ordering occurs, where magnetic correlations are of the checkerboard type in the ab-plane and have a long periodicity along the c-axis with inhomogeneous ordered moments pointing to the c-axis.

Enhanced anisotropic spin fluctuations below tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition in LaFeAs(O_{1-x}F_x) probed by ^{75}As and ^{139}La NMR

$^{75}$As and $^{139}$La NMR results of LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$) ($x$=0, 0.025, and 0.04) were reported. Upon F-doping, the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition temperature $T_S$, antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_N$ and internal magnetic field $μ_0H_{\rm int}$ are gradually reduced for $x<0.04$. However, at $x=0.04$, $T_N$ is abruptly suppressed to be 30 K along with a tiny $μ_0H_{\rm int}$, which is distinct from the continuous disappearance of the ordered phases in the Ba122 systems of Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_2$(As,P)$_2$. The anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$, $(T_1)^{-1}_{H\parallel ab}/(T_1)^{-1}_{H\parallel c}$, in the paramagnetic phase of $x = 0$ and 0.025 is constant ($\sim 1.5$), but increases abruptly below $T_S$ due to the enhancement of $(T_1)^{-1}_{H\parallel ab}$ by the slowing down of magnetic fluctuations. This indicates that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion enhances the anisotropy in the spin space via magnetoelastic coupling and/or spin-orbit interaction.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point in Heavy-Fermion Iron Oxypnictide Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)PO

We have performed ^{31}P-NMR measurements on Ce(Ru_{1-x}Fe_{x})PO in order to investigate ferromagnetic (FM) quantum criticality, since heavy-fermion (HF) ferromagnet CeRuPO with a two-dimensional structure turns to a HF paramagnet by an isovalent Fe-substitution for Ru. We found that Ce(Ru_{0.15}Fe_{0.85})PO shows critical fluctuations down to \sim 0.3 K, as well as the continuous suppression of Curie temperature and the ordered moments by the Fe-substitution. These experimental results suggest the presence of a FM quantum critical point (QCP) at x \sim 0.86, which is a rare example among itinerant ferromagnets. In addition, we point out that the critical behaviors in Ce(Ru_{0.15}Fe_{0.85})PO share the similarity with those in YbRh_{2}Si_{2}, where the local criticality of $f$ electrons has been discussed. We reveal that Ce(Ru_{1-x}Fe_{x})PO is a new system to study FM quantum criticality in HF compounds.

Quantum critical state in a magnetic quasicrystal

Quasicrystals are metallic alloys that possess long-range, aperiodic structures with diffraction symmetries forbidden to conventional crystals. Since the discovery of quasicrystals by Schechtman et al. at 1984 (ref. 1), there has been considerable progress in resolving their geometric structure. For example, it is well known that the golden ratio of mathematics and art occurs over and over again in their crystal structure. However, the characteristic properties of the electronic states - whether they are extended as in periodic crystals or localized as in amorphous materials - are still unresolved. Here we report the first observation of quantum (T = 0) critical phenomena of the Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal - the magnetic susceptibility and the electronic specific heat coefficient arising from strongly correlated 4f electrons of the Yb atoms diverge as T -> 0. Furthermore, we observe that this quantum critical phenomenon is robust against hydrostatic pressure. By contrast, there is no such divergence in a crystalline approximant, a phase whose composition is close to that of the quasicrystal and whose unit cell has atomic decorations (that is, icosahedral clusters of atoms) that look like the quasicrystal. These results clearly indicate that the quantum criticality is associated with the unique electronic state of the quasicrystal, that is, a spatially confined critical state. Finally we discuss the possibility that there is a general law underlying the conventional crystals and the quasicrystals.

^{59}Co-Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance studies on YCoGe --- Comparison between YCoGe and UCoGe ---

We have performed ^{59}Co-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on YCoGe, which is a reference compound of ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe, in order to investigate the magnetic properties at the Co site. Magnetic and superconducting transitions were not observed down to 0.3 K, but a conventional metallic behavior was found in YCoGe, although its crystal structure is similar to that of UCoGe. From the comparison between experimental results of two compounds, the ferromagnetism and superconductivity observed in UCoGe originate from the U-5f electrons.

Evaluation of Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4

This review presents a summary and evaluations of the superconducting properties of the layered ruthenate Sr2RuO4 as they are known in the autumn of 2011. This paper appends the main progress that has been made since the preceding review by Mackenzie and Maeno was published in 2003. Here, special focus is placed on the critical evaluation of the spin-triplet, odd-parity pairing scenario applied to Sr2RuO4. After an introduction to superconductors with possible odd-parity pairing, accumulated evidence for the pairing symmetry of Sr2RuO4 is examined. Then, significant recent progress on the theoretical approaches to the superconducting pairing by Coulomb repulsion is reviewed. A section is devoted to some experimental properties of Sr2RuO4 that seem to defy simple explanations in terms of currently available spin-triplet scenario. The next section deals with some new developments using eutectic boundaries and micro-crystals, which reveals novel superconducting phenomena related to chiral edge states, odd-frequency pairing states, and half-fluxoid states. Some of these properties are intimately connected with the properties as a topological superconductor. The article concludes with a summary of knowledge emerged from the study of Sr2RuO4 that are now more widely applied to understand the physics of other unconventional superconductors, as well as with a brief discussion of relatively unexplored but promising areas of ongoing and future studies of Sr2RuO4.

^{31}P and ^{75}As NMR evidence for a residual density of states at zero energy in superconducting BaFe_2(As_{0.67}P_{0.33})_2

^{31}P and ^{75}As NMR measurements were performed in superconducting BaFe_2(As_{0.67}P_{0.33})_2 with T_c = 30 K. The nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate T_1^{-1} and the Knight shift in the normal state indicate the development of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and T_1^{-1} in the superconducting (SC) state decreases without a coherence peak just below T_c, as observed in (Ba_{1-x}K_{x})Fe_2As_2. In contrast to other iron arsenide superconductors, the T_1^{-1} \propto T behavior is observed below 4K, indicating the presence of a residual density of states at zero energy. Our results suggest that strikingly different SC gaps appear in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_{x})_2 despite a comparable T_c value, an analogous phase diagram, and similar Fermi surfaces to (Ba_{1-x}K_{x})Fe_2As_2.

Chemical Pressure and Physical Pressure in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_{x})_2

Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, under hydrostatic pressure via bulk AC susceptibility were carried out on several concentrations of phosphorous substitution in BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2. The pressure dependence of unsubstituted BaFe_2As_2, phosphorous concentration dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2, as well as the pressure dependence of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 all point towards an identical maximum T_c of 31 K. This demonstrates that phosphorous substitution and physical pressure result in similar superconducting phase diagrams, and that phosphorous substitution does not induce substantial impurity scattering.

Microscopic Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in Single-Crystal UCoGe

Unambiguous evidence for the microscopic coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in UCoGe ($T_{\rm Curie} \sim 2.5$ K and $T_{\rm SC}$ $\sim$ 0.6 K) is reported from $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The $^{59}$Co-NQR signal below 1 K indicates ferromagnetism throughout the sample volume, while nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ in the ferromagnetic (FM) phase decreases below $T_{\rm SC}$ due to the opening of the superconducting(SC) gap. The SC state was found to be inhomogeneous, suggestive of a self-induced vortex state, potentially realizable in a FM superconductor. In addition, the $^{59}$Co-NQR spectrum around $T_{\rm Curie}$ show that the FM transition in UCoGe possesses a first-order character, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction that the low-temperature FM transition in itinerant magnets is generically of first-order.

Two-Dimensional Spin Dynamics in the Itinerant Ferromagnet LaCoPO Revealed by Magnetization and $^{31}$P-NMR Measurements

We have performed magnetization and $^{31}$P-NMR measurements on the itinerant ferromagnet LaCoPO (Curie temperature $T_{\rm Curie}\sim 44$ K) with a layered structure in order to investigate spin dynamics in the paramagnetic state. The linear scaling between the Knight shift $K$ at the P site and the bulk susceptibility $χ$ above $T_{\rm Curie}$ indicates that the P nucleus is suitable for investigating magnetic properties. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by the temperature $1/T_1T$ at the P site show characteristic features of itinerant ferromagnets, such as ZrZn$_2$ and Y(Co$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)$_2$. In addition, the relationship between $1/T_1T$ and $χ$ above $T_{\rm Curie}$ suggests that ferromagnetic fluctuations possess a two-dimensional (2D) characteristic. The present data show that LaCoPO is a unique ferromagnet, where the 2D fluctuations anticipated from the crystal structure are predominant down to almost $T_{\rm Curie}$.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Fluctuations and Anomalous Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in UCoGe Revealed by Co-NMR and NQR Studies

Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies were performed in the recently discovered UCoGe, in which the ferromagnetic and superconducting (SC) transitions were reported to occur at $T_{\rm Curie} \sim 3$ K and $T_S \sim 0.8$ K (N. T. Huy {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99} (2007) 067006), in order to investigate the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity as well as the normal-state and SC properties from a microscopic point of view. From the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ and Knight-shift measurements, we confirmed that ferromagnetic fluctuations which possess a quantum critical character are present above $T_{\rm Curie}$ and the occurrence of ferromagnetic transition at 2.5 K in our polycrystalline sample. The magnetic fluctuations in the normal state show that UCoGe is an itinerant ferromagnet similar to ZrZn$_2$ and YCo$_2$. The onset SC transition was identified at $T_S \sim 0.7$ K, below which $1/T_1$ of 30 % of the volume fraction starts to decrease due to the opening of the SC gap. This component of $1/T_1$, which follows a $T^3$ dependence in the temperature range of $0.3 - 0.1$ K, coexists with the magnetic components of $1/T_1$ showing a $\sqrt{T}$ dependence below $T_S$. From the NQR measurements in the SC state, we suggest that the self-induced vortex state is realized in UCoGe.

Quasiparticle spin susceptibility in heavy-fermion superconductors : An NMR study compared with specific heat results

Quasi-particle spin susceptibility ($χ^{qp}$) for various heavy-fermion (HF) superconductors are discussed on the basis of the experimental results of electronic specific heat ($γ_{el}$), NMR Knight shift ($K$) and NMR relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) within the framework of the Fermi liquid model for a Kramers doublet crystal electric field (CEF) ground state. $χ^{qp}_γ$ is calculated from the enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient $γ_{el}$ and $χ^{qp}_{T_1}$ from the quasi-particle Korringa relation $T_1T(K^{qp}_{T_1})^2=const.$ via the relation of $χ^{qp}_{T_1}=(N_Aμ_B/A_{hf})K^{qp}_{T_1}$ where $A_{hf}$ is the hyperfine coupling constant, $N_A$ the Abogadoro's number and $μ_B$ the Bohr magneton. For the even-parity (spin-singlet) superconductors CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeCoIn$_5$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$, the fractional decrease in the Knight shift, $δK^{obs}$, below the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) is due to the decrease of the spin susceptibility of heavy quasi-particle estimated consistently from $χ^{qp}_γ$ and $χ^{qp}_{T_1}$. This result allows us to conclude that the heavy quasi-particles form the spin-singlet Cooper pairs in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeCoIn$_5$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$. On the other hand, no reduction in the Knight shift is observed in UPt$_3$ and UNi$_2$Al$_3$, nevertheless the estimated values of $χ^{qp}_γ$ and $χ^{qp}_{T_1}$ are large enough to be probed experimentally. The odd-parity superconductivity is therefore concluded in these compounds. The NMR result provides a convincing way to classify the HF superconductors into either even- or odd- parity paring together with the identification for the gap structure, as long as the system has Kramers degeneracy.
