Quantum paramagnetic states in the spin-1/2 distorted honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet -- application to Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$)

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg model with three exchange interactions, $J_{\rm A}$, $J_{\rm B}$, and $J_{\rm C}$ that is realized in a distorted honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet ${\rm Cu_2 (pymca)_3 (ClO_4)}$. We remeasured the magnetic susceptibility of its polycrystalline sample with special care, and determined the exchange parameters of this material through the comparison with numerical results based on a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The QMC method also provides a ground-state phase diagram in the $J_{\rm A}/J_{\rm C}$-$J_{\rm B}/J_{\rm C}$ plane. The phase diagram consists of a small N${\rm \acute{e}}$el phase and a gapped quantum paramagnetic phase surrounding the N${\rm \acute{e}}$el phase. The latter includes six regimes of hexagonal-singlet-type states and dimer-singlet-type states alternatingly without boundaries closing the spin gap. We further calculate the equal-time spin structure factor in each phase using the QMC method. The computed spin dynamics by the exact diagonalization method exhibits continuums near and in the AF phase. Characteristic four energy band structures in the state with strong hexagonal-singlet-type correlations are informative to clarify the ground-state of ${\rm Cu_2 (pymca)_3 (ClO_4)}$ by future neutron scattering measurements.

Ferromagnetic clouds caused by hole motion in a one-dimensional $t$-$J$ mode

The one-dimensional $t_1$-$t_2$-$J_1$-$J_2$ model is examined in the one-hole case, in which the total number of electrons is one less than the number of the lattice sites. The ground-state phase diagram includes a series of partial ferromagnetic phases, which are stacked in a regime of positive and small $J_1$. We find that the ground state in each of these partial ferromagnetic phases includes a ferromagnetic cloud, which is a multiple-spin bound state together with the hole. The ferromagnetic cloud is a large magnetic polaron with a heavy mass in a single-band electronic system and is supposedly formed as a result of Nagaoka ferromagnetism which locally works around the hole.

Topological Phases of the Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Alternating Heisenberg Chain with Frustrated Next-Nearest-Neighbour Interaction

The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction is investigated. The ground state is the Haldane phase for weak NNN interaction, and is the ferromagnetic phase for weak antiferromagnetic interaction. We find a series of topologically distinct spin-gap phases with various magnitudes of edge spins for strong NNN interaction. The phase boundaries between these phases are determined on the basis of the DMRG calculation with additional spins that compensate the edge spins. It is found that each of the exact solutions with short-range antiferromagnetic correlation on the ferromagnetic-nonmagnetic phase boundary is representative of each spin gap phase.

Effects of Single-site Anisotropy on Mixed Diamond Chains with Spins 1 and 1/2

Effects of single-site anisotropy on mixed diamond chains with spins 1 and 1/2 are investigated in the ground states and at finite temperatures. There are phases where the ground state is a spin cluster solid, i.e., an array of uncorrelated spin-1 clusters separated by singlet dimers. The ground state is nonmagnetic for the easy-plane anisotropy, while it is paramagnetic for the easy-axis anisotropy. Also, there are the Néel, Haldane, and large-$D$ phases, where the ground state is a single spin cluster of infinite size and the system is equivalent to the spin-1 Heisenberg chain with alternating anisotropy. The longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities and entropy are calculated at finite temperatures in the spin-cluster-solid phases. Their low-temperature behaviors are sensitive to anisotropy.

Bound state of a hole and a triplet spin in the $t_1$-$t_2$-$J_1$-$J_2$ model

We show that a hole and a triplet spin form a bound state in a nearly half-filled band of the one- and two-dimensional $t_1$-$t_2$-$J_1$-$J_2$ models. Numerical calculation indicates that the bound state is a spatially small object and moves as a composite particle with spin 1 and charge $+e$ in the spin-gapped background. Two bound states repulsively interact with each other in a short distance and move independently as long as they keep their distance. If a finite density of bound states behave as bosons, the system undergoes the Bose-Einstein condensation which means a superconductivity with charge $+e$.

Finite Temperature Properties of the Mixed Diamond Chain with Spins 1 and 1/2

We formulate statistical mechanics for the mixed diamond chain with spins of magnitudes 1 and 1/2. Owing to a series of conservation laws, any eigenstate of this system is decomposed into eigenstates of finite odd-length spin-1 chains. The ground state undergoes five quantum phase transitions with varying the parameter $λ$ controlling frustration. We obtain the values of the residual entropy and the Curie constant which characterize each phase and phase boundary at low temperatures. We further find various characteristic finite-temperature properties such as the nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, the multipeak structure in the $λ$-dependence of entropy, the plateau-like temperature dependence of entropy and the multipeak structure of specific heat.

Haldane Phases and Ferrimagnetic Phases with Spontaneous Translational Symmetry Breakdown in Distorted Mixed Diamond Chains with Spins 1 and 1/2

The ground states of two types of distorted mixed diamond chains with spins 1 and 1/2 are investigated using exact diagonalization, DMRG, and mapping onto low-energy effective models. In the undistorted case, the ground state consists of an array of independent spin-1 clusters separated by singlet dimers. The lattice distortion induces an effective interaction between cluster spins. When this effective interaction is antiferromagnetic, several Haldane phases appear with or without spontaneous translational symmetry breakdown (STSB). The transition between the Haldane phase without STSB and that with $(n+1)$-fold STSB ($n$ = 1, 2, and 3) belongs to the same universality class as the $(n+1)$-clock model. In contrast, when the effective interaction is ferromagnetic, the quantized and partial ferrimagnetic phases appear with or without STSB. An effective low-energy theory for the partial ferrimagnetic phase is presented.

Melting Temperature of Metals Based on the Nearly Free Electron Model

We propose a general formula for the melting temperature of metals in terms of electronic mass, electronic number, and nearest-neighbor lattice distance. We derive it from the instability of the transverse phonon in the solid phase, using the nearly free electron model. Including higher order terms of vibrations enhanced near the melting temperature, the electronic restoring force is reduced and the ionic one is negligible. This fact greatly brings down the melting temperature, bringing it close to experimental data in the range of 10 % for Cs, Cu, Au, and Ba. Also, this theory confirms the Lindemann criterion.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Alternating-Bond Mixed Diamond Chains with Spins 1 and 1/2

We investigate the mixed diamond chain composed of spins 1 and 1/2 when the exchange interaction is alternatingly distorted. Depending on the strengths of frustration and distortion, this system has various ground states. Each ground state consists of an array of spin clusters separated by singlet dimers by virtue of an infinite number of local conservation laws. We determine the ground state phase diagram by numerically analyzing each spin cluster. In particular for strong distortion, we find an infinite series of quantum phase transitions by the cluster expansion method and conformal field theory. This leads to the infinite series of steps in the behavior of the Curie constant and residual entropy.

Exact spin-cluster ground states in a mixed diamond chain

The mixed diamond chain is a frustrated Heisenberg chain composed of successive diamond-shaped units with two kinds of spins of magnitudes S and S/2 (S: integer). Ratio $lambda$ of two exchange parameters controls the strength of frustration. With varying $lambda$, the Haldane state and several spin cluster states appear as the ground state. A spin cluster state is a tensor product of exact local eigenstates of cluster spins. We prove that a spin cluster state is the ground state in a finite interval of $lambda$. For S=1, we numerically determine the total phase diagram consisting of five phases.

Phase diagrams of period-4 spin chains consisting of three kinds of spins

We study a period-4 antiferromagnetic mixed quantum spin chain consisting of three kinds of spins. When the ground state is singlet, the spin magnitudes in a unit cell are arrayed as (s-t, s, s+t, s) with integer or half-odd integer s and t (0 <= t < s). The spin Hamiltonian is mapped onto a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) in a previously developed method. The resultant NLSM includes only two independent parameters originating from four exchange constants for fixed s and t. The topological angle in the NLSM determines the gapless phase boundaries between disordered phases in the parameter space. The phase diagrams for various s and t shows rich structures. We systematically explain the phases in the singlet-cluster-solid picture.

Phase Diagrams of Mixed Spin Chains with Period 4 by the Nonlinear $σ$ Model

We study mixed quantum spin chains consisting of two kinds of spins with magnitudes, s_a and s_b. The spins are arrayed as s_a-s_a-s_b-s_b in a unit cell and the exchange couplings are accordingly periodic with period 4. The spin Hamiltonian is mapped onto a nonlinear $σ$ model based on the general formula for periodic inhomogeneous spin chains. The gapless condition given by the nonlinear $σ$ model determines boundaries between disordered phases in the space of the exchange parameters. The phase diagram has a rich phase structure characterized by the values of s_a and s_b. We explain all phases in the singlet-cluster-solid picture which is an extension of the valence-bond-solid picture.
