Surjective endomorphisms of projective surfaces: the existence of infinitely many dense orbits

Let $f \colon X \to X$ be a surjective endomorphism of a normal projective surface. When $\operatorname{deg} f \geq 2$, applying an (iteration of) $f$-equivariant minimal model program (EMMP), we determine the geometric structure of $X$. Using this, we extend the second author's result to singular surfaces to the extent that either $X$ has an $f$-invariant non-constant rational function, or $f$ has infinitely many Zariski-dense forward orbits; this result is also extended to Adelic topology (which is finer than Zariski topology).

Wild automorphisms of projective varieties, the maps which have no invariant proper subsets

Let $X$ be a projective variety and $σ$ a wild automorphism on $X$, i.e., whenever $σ(Z) = Z$ for a non-empty Zariski-closed subset $Z$ of $X$, we have $Z = X$. Then $X$ is conjectured to be an abelian variety with $σ$ of zero entropy (and proved to be so when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 2$) by Z. Reichstein, D. Rogalski and J. J. Zhang in their study of projectively simple rings. This conjecture has been generally open for more than a decade. In this note, we confirm this original conjecture when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 3$ and $X$ is not a Calabi-Yau threefold, and also show that $σ$ is of zero entropy when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 4$ and the Kodaira dimension $κ(X) \ge 0$.

Zero entropy automorphisms of compact Kähler manifolds and dynamical filtrations

We study zero entropy automorphisms of a compact Kähler manifold $X$. Our goal is to bring to light some new structures of the action on the cohomology of $X$, in terms of the so-called dynamical filtrations on $H^{1,1}(X, {\mathbb R})$. Based on these filtrations, we obtain the first general upper bound on the polynomial growth of the iterations $(g^m)^* \, {\circlearrowleft} \, H^2(X, {\mathbb C})$ where $g$ is a zero entropy automorphism, in terms of ${\rm dim} \, X$ only. We also give an upper bound for the (essential) derived length $\ell_{\rm ess}(G, X)$ for every zero entropy subgroup $G$, again in terms of the dimension of $X$ only. We propose a conjectural upper bound for the essential nilpotency class $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$ of a zero entropy subgroup $G$. Finally, we construct examples showing that our upper bound of the polynomial growth (as well as the conjectural upper bound of $c_{\rm ess}(G,X)$) are optimal.

Invariant subvarieties with small dynamical degree

Let $f:X\to X $ be a dominant self-morphism of an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We consider the set $Σ_{f^{\infty}}$ of $f$-periodic (irreducible closed) subvarieties of small dynamical degree, the subset $S_{f^{\infty}}$ of maximal elements in $Σ_{f^{\infty}}$, and the subset $S_f$ of $f$-invariant elements in $S_{f^{\infty}}$. When $X$ is projective, we prove the finiteness of the set $P_f$ of $f$-invariant prime divisors with small dynamical degree, and give an optimal upper bound (of cardinality) $$\sharp P_{f^n}\le d_1(f)^n(1+o(1))$$ as $n\to \infty$, where $d_1(f)$ is the first dynamic degree of $f$. When $X$ is an algebraic group (with $f$ being a translation of an isogeny), or a (not necessarily complete) toric variety (with $f$ stabilizing the big torus), we give an optimal upper bound $$\sharp S_{f^n}\le d_1(f)^{n\cdot\dim(X)}(1+o(1))$$ as $n \to \infty$, which slightly generalizes a conjecture of S.-W. Zhang for polarized $f$.

Potential density of projective varieties having an int-amplified endomorphism

We consider the potential density of rational points on an algebraic variety defined over a number field $K$, i.e., the property that the set of rational points of $X$ becomes Zariski dense after a finite field extension of $K$. For a non-uniruled projective variety with an int-amplified endomorphism, we show that it always satisfies potential density. When a rationally connected variety admits an int-amplified endomorphism, we prove that there exists some rational curve with a Zariski dense forward orbit, assuming the Zariski dense orbit conjecture in lower dimensions. As an application, we prove the potential density for projective varieties with int-amplified endomorphisms in dimension $\leq 3$. We also study the existence of densely many rational points with the maximal arithmetic degree over a sufficiently large number field.

Normal projective varieties admitting polarized or int-amplified endomorphisms

Let $X$ be a normal projective variety admitting a polarized or int-amplified endomorphism $f$. We list up characteristic properties of such an endomorphism and classify such a variety from the aspects of its singularity, anti-canonical divisor and Kodaira dimension. Then we run the equivariant minimal model program with respect to not just the single $f$ but also the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms of $X$, up to finite-index. Several applications are given. We also give both algebraic and geometric characterizations of toric varieties via polarized endomorphisms.

Semi-group structure of all endomorphisms of a projective variety admitting a polarized endomorphism

Let $X$ be a projective variety admitting a polarized (or more generally, int-amplified) endomorphism. We show: there are only finitely many contractible extremal rays; and when $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal, every minimal model program is equivariant relative to the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms, up to finite index. Further, when $X$ is rationally connected and smooth, we show: there is a finite-index submonoid $G$ of $SEnd(X)$ such that $G$ acts via pullback as diagonal (and hence commutative) matrices on the Neron-Severi group; the full automorphisms group $Aut(X)$ has finitely many connected components; and every amplified endomorphism is int-amplified.

Compact Kähler manifolds with automorphism groups of maximal rank

For an automorphism group G on an n-dimensional (n > 2) normal projective variety or a compact Kähler manifold X so that G modulo its subgroup N(G) of null entropy elements is an abelian group of maximal rank n-1, we show that N(G) is virtually contained in Aut_0(X), the X is a quotient of a complex torus T and G is mostly descended from the symmetries on the torus T, provided that both X and the pair (X, G) are minimal.
