Emergent skyrmion-based chiral order in zero-field Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing kagome lattice

We show that classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing kagome lattice can be a platform to realize a zero-field topological order of the scalar spin chirality which can be viewed as a miniature skyrmion crystal (SkX) of discrete form with a small number of spins in its magnetic unit cell. In the model, a third nearest-neighbor (NN) antiferromagnetic interaction along the bond direction $J_3$ and the breathing bond-alternation characterized by the ratio of the NN interaction for large triangles to that for small ones, $J_1'/J_1$, are essential. It is found by means of Monte Carlo simulations that a commensurate triple-${\bf Q}$ state appearing for relatively strong $J_3$ at zero field is the noncoplanar state with the SkX structure in the breathing case of $J_1'/J_1 \neq 1$, while in the uniform case of $J_1'/J_1 =1$, it is a collinear state favored by thermal fluctuations. The origin of this chiral order and experimental implications of our result are also discussed.

Hedgehog lattice and field-induced chirality in breathing-pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We theoretically investigate a $J_1$-$J_3$ classical Heisenberg model on the breathing pyrochlore lattice, where the nearest-neighbor (NN) exchange interactions for small and large tetrahedra, $J_1$ and $J_1'$, take different values due to the breathing bond-alternation and $J_3$ is the third NN antiferromagnetic interaction along the bond direction. It is found by means of Monte Carlo simulations that for large $J_3$, a hedgehog lattice, a three-dimensional periodic array of magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, emerges in the form of a quadruple-${\bf Q}$ state characterized by the ordering vector of ${\bf Q}=(\pm\frac{1}{2},\pm\frac{1}{2},\pm\frac{1}{2})$, being irrespective of the signs of $J_1$ and/or $J_1'$ as long as $J_1\neq J_1'$. It is also found that in an applied magnetic field, there appear six quadruple-${\bf Q}$ states depending on the values of $J_1$ and $J_1'$, among which three phases including the in-field hedgehog-lattice state exhibit nonzero total chirality $\mbox{\boldmath $χ$}^{\rm T}$ associated with the anomalous Hall effect of chirality origin. In the remaining two chiral phases, which are realized in the presence of ferromagnetic $J_1$ and/or $J_1'$, the spin structure is not topologically nontrivial, in spite of the fact that $\mbox{\boldmath $χ$}^{\rm T} \neq 0$. The role of the topological objects of the monopoles in $\mbox{\boldmath $χ$}^{\rm T}$ is also discussed.

Little-Parks oscillation and ${\bf d}$-vector texture in spin-triplet superconducting rings with bias current

We theoretically investigate the critical bias current $j_c$ for a superconducting (SC) ring in a magnetic field. Based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory, we show that $j_c$ exhibits a Little-Parks (LP) oscillation as a function of the magnetic flux passing through the ring, similarly to the LP oscillation in the SC transition temperature. It is also found that for a spin-triplet SC ring, the ${\bf d}$-vector rotates to yield a larger $j_c$, forming a texture along the circumference of the ring. Experimental implications of our result are discussed.

Hedgehog-lattice spin texture in classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

The hedgehog lattice, a three-dimensional periodic array of magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, is known to be realized in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Here, we demonstrate by means of Monte Carlo simulations that the hedgehog lattice is induced by not the DM interaction but frustration in classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice. In the model, the breathing bond-alternation is characterized by the ratio of the nearest-neighbor (NN) antiferromagnetic exchange interaction for large tetrahedra to that for small ones, J1'/J1. A quadruple-q state with the ordering vector of q=(\pm 1/2,\pm 1/2,\pm 1/2), which is realized for a large third NN antiferromagnetic interaction along the bond direction J3, turns out to become the hedgehog-lattice state in the breathing case of J1'/J1 <1, while in the uniform case of J1'/J1 =1, it is a collinear state favored by thermal fluctuations. It is also found that in a magnetic field, the structure of the (1/2,1/2,1/2) hedgehog lattice is changed from cubic to tetragonal, resulting in a nonzero net spin chirality which in a metalic system, should yield a characteristic topological Hall effect.

Negative resistance state in superconducting NbSe$_2$ induced by surface acoustic waves

We report a negative resistance, namely, a voltage drop along the opposite direction of a current flow, in the superconducting gap of NbSe$_2$ thin films under the irradiation of surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The amplitude of the negative resistance becomes larger by increasing the SAW power and decreasing temperature. As one possible scenario, we propose that soliton-antisoliton pairs in the charge density wave of NbSe$_2$ modulated by the SAW serve as a time-dependent capacitance in the superconducting state, leading to the dc negative resistance. The present experimental result would provide a previously unexplored way to examine nonequilibrium manipulation of the superconductivity.

Spin-lattice-coupled order in Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the pyrochlore lattice

Effects of local lattice distortions on the spin ordering are investigated for the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice. It is found by Monte Carlo simulations that the spin-lattice coupling (SLC) originating from site phonons induces a first-order transition into two different types of collinear magnetic ordered states. The state realized at stronger SLC is cubic symmetric characterized by the magnetic (1/2,1/2,1/2) Bragg peaks, while that at weaker SLC is tetragonal symmetric characterized by the (1,1,0) ones, each accompanied by the commensurate local lattice distortions. Experimental implications to chromium spinels are discussed.

Surface scattering effect and the stripe order in films of the superfluid $^3$He B phase

Surface scattering effects in thin films of the superfluid 3He B phase have been theoretically investigated, with an emphasis on the stability of the stripe order with spontaneous broken translational symmetry in the film plane and quasiparticle excitations in this spatially inhomogeneous phase. Based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory in the weak coupling limit, we have shown that the stripe order, which was originally discussed for a film with two specular surfaces, can be stable in a film with one specular and one diffusive surfaces which should correspond to superfluid 3He on a substrate. It is also found by numerically solving the Eilenberger equation that due to the stripe structure, a midgap state distinct from the surface Andreev bound state emerges and its signature is reflected in the local density of states.

Signatures of the Helical Phase in the Critical Fields at Twin Boundaries of Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductors

Domains in non-centrosymmetric materials represent regions of different crystal structure and spin-orbit coupling. Twin boundaries separating such domains display unusual properties in non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCS), where magneto-electric effects influence the local lower and upper critical magnetic fields. As a model system, we investigate NCS with tetragonal crystal structure and Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), and with twin boundaries parallel to their basal planes. There, we report that there are two types of such twin boundaries which separate domains of opposite RSOC. In a magnetic field parallel to the basal plane, magneto-electric coupling between the spin polarization and supercurrents induces an effective magnetic field at these twin boundaries. We show this leads to unusual effects in such superconductors, and in particular to the modification of the upper and lower critical fields, in ways that depend on the type of twin boundary, as analyzed in detail, both analytically and numerically. Experimental implications of these effects are discussed.

Stripe order in superfluid 3He confined in narrow cylinders

We theoretically investigate pairing states of the spin-triplet p-wave superfluid 3He confined in narrow cylinders. The surface-induced distortion and the multiple internal degrees of freedom of the order parameter lead to the occurrence of a stripe structure along the cylinder axis in the superfluid 3He-B phase. We show that in sufficiently small cylinders with an anisotropic surface scattering, the stripe order with broken translational symmetry may be stabilized as the lowest energy state. Periodic spin-current textures caused in this inhomogeneous superfluid phase are also discussed.

Model for magnetic flux pattern induced by in-plane magnetic fields on spatially inhomogeneous superconducting interfaces of LaAlO_3-SrTiO_3

The effect of spatial inhomogeneity on the properties of a two-dimensional non-centrosymmetric superconductor in an in-plane magnetic field is investigated, as it can be realized in LaAlO_3-SrTiO_3 interfaces. We demonstrate that the spatial variation of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) yields a local magnetic flux pattern due to the field-induced inhomogeneous helical phase. For sufficiently strong fields, vortices can nucleate at inhomogeneities of the RSOC.

Fluctuation and Order of Antiferromagnetism induced by Paramagnetic Pair-Breaking in Superconducting Vortex Lattice

Effects of the strong Pauli-paramagnetic pair-breaking (PPB) on the vortex lattice in d-wave superconductors are theoretically studied by putting emphasis on consequences of the PPB-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in the spatial modulation in the vortex lattice. It is shown that the PPB-induced AFM fluctuation in the superconducting state leads to an enhancement of the vortex lattice form factor which is a measure of spatial variations of the internal magnetic field and that the enhancement becomes more remarkable as an AFM instability is approached. It is also demonstrated that the PPB-induced AFM ordering is assisted by the vortex-lattice modulation, and thus, that the resulting AFM order is spatially modulated, while it is not localized in the vortex cores but coexistent with the nonvanishing superconducting order parameter. These results are discussed in connection with two phenomena observed in CeCoIn5, the anomalous field dependence of the vortex lattice form factor and the AFM order appearing inside the high-field and low-temperature superconducting phase.

Anisotropy-induced Vortex Core Transitions in Superfluid 3He in Aerogel

Core structures of a single vortex in A-like and B-like phases of superfluid 3He in uniaxially compressed and stretched aerogels are studied by numerically solving Ginzburg-Landau equations derived microscopically. It is found that, although the A-like phase with axial pairing is extended by any uniaxial deformation, the vortex core states in the two phases depend highly on the type of deformation in aerogel: In a compressed aerogel, the first order vortex core transition (VCT) previously seen in the bulk B phase appears at any pressure in B-like phase, while no strange vortex core is expected in A-like phase. By contrast, in a stretched aerogel, the VCT in B-like phase is lost, while another VCT is expected to occur between a nonunitary core and the polar one in A-like phase. An experimental search for these results is hoped to understand correlation between superfluid $^3$He and aerogel structures.

Antiferromagnetic ordering induced by paramagnetic depairing in unconventional superconductors

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) (or spin-density wave) quantum critical fluctuation enhanced just below H_c2(0) have been often observed in d-wave superconductors with a strong Pauli paramagnetic depairing (PD) including CeCoIn_5. It is shown here that such a tendency of field-induced AFM ordering is a consequence of strong PD and should appear particularly in superconductors with a gap node along the AFM modulation. Two phenomena seen in CeCoIn_5, the anomalous vortex lattice form factor and the AFM order in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, are explained based on this peculiar PD effect.

Roles of Antiferromagnetic Fluctuation in High Field Phase Diagram of Superconductors with Strong Paramagnetic Depairing

The high field phase diagram and magnetic properties of CeCoIn_5 below H_c2(0) are examined from the picture regarding the high field and low temperature (HFLT) phase as a possible Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) vortex lattice. Crucial roles of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations enhanced close to H_c2(0) are stressed. The FFLO vortex lattice with a longitudinal modulation parallel to the field is stabilized compared with those with lateral modulations as a consequence of the presence of AFM fluctuations. Further, an unusual field-induced enhancement of the flux distribution is argued to be a consequence of interplay between the paramagnetic depairing and AFM fluctuation, both of which are enhanced with increasing field.

Vortex core transitions in superfluid 3He in globally anisotropic aerogels

Core structures of a single vortex in A-like and B-like phases of superfluid 3He in uniaxially compressed and stretched aerogels are studied by numerically solving Ginzburg-Landau equations derived microscopically. It is found that, although any uniaxial deformation leads to a wider A-like phase with the axial pairing in the pressure-temperature phase diagram, the vortex core states in the two phases in aerogel depend highly on the type of deformation. In a compressed aerogel, the first-order vortex core transition (VCT) previously seen in the bulk B phase appears at any pressure in the B-like phase while no strange vortex core is expected in the corresponding A-like phase. By contrast, in a stretched aerogel, the VCT in the B-like phase is lost while another VCT is expected to occur between a nonunitary core and a polar one in the A-like phase. Experimental search for these results is hoped to understand correlation between superfluid 3He and aerogel structure.
