Theory-guided investigation on magnetic evolution of MnPt5−x_{5-x}Pdx_xP and discovery of anti-CeCoIn5_5-type ferromagnetic MnPd5_5P

We report the magnetic changes from canted antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic orderings in anti-115-type MnPt5−x_{5-x}Pdx_xP (xx = 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5) and the discovery of a new rare-earth-free ferromagnet, MnPd5_5P by both theoretical prediction and experimental investigation. The family compounds were synthesized using high temperature solid state method and characterized to crystalize in the anti-CeCoIn5_5 type with the space group P4/mmm exhibiting a two-dimensional layered structural feature. The magnetic property measurements indicate that the compounds ordered from canted A-type antiferromagnet in MnPt5_5P to ferromagnet above the room temperature with varying degrees of coercivity and magnetic moments in MnPd5_5P by reducing the spin orbital coupling. The results of the MnPt5−x_{5-x}Pdx_xP have been analyzed in comparison to the other candidates of the 151 family of Mn(Pt/Pd)5_5(P/As) to understand the complex structure-magnetism relationships.

Complex Dirac-like Electronic Structure in Atomic Site Ordered Rh3In3.4Ge3.6

We report the synthesis via an indium flux method of a novel single-crystalline compound Rh3In3.4Ge3.6 that belongs to the cubic Ir3Ge7 structure type. In Rh3In3.4Ge3.6, the In and Ge atoms choose to preferentially occupy, respectively, the 12d and 16f sites of the Im-3m space group, thus creating a colored version of the Ir3Ge7 structure. Like the other compounds of the Ir3Ge7 family, Rh3In3.4Ge3.6 shows potential as a thermoelectric displaying a relatively large power factor, PF ~ 2 mW/cmK2, at a temperature T ~ 225 K albeit showing a modest figure of merit, ZT = 8 x 10-4, due to the lack of a finite band gap. These figures might improve through a use of chemical substitution strategies to achieve band gap opening. Remarkably, electronic band structure calculations reveal that this compound displays a complex Dirac-like electronic structure relatively close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure is composed of several Dirac type-I and type-II nodes, and even Dirac type-III nodes that result from the touching between a flat band and a linearly dispersing band. This rich Dirac-like electronic dispersion offers the possibility to observe Dirac type-III nodes and study their role in the physical properties of Rh3In3.4Ge3.6 and related Ir3Ge7-type materials.

A Novel Magnetic Material by Design: Observation of Yb3+ with Spin-1/2 and Possible Superconducting Trace in YbxPt5P

The localized f-electrons enrich the magnetic properties in rare-earth-based intermetallics. Among those, compounds with heavier 4d and 5d transition metals are even more fascinating because anomalous electronic properties may be induced by the hybridization of 4f and itinerant conduction electrons primarily from the d orbitals. Here, we describe the observation of trivalent Yb3+ with S = 1/2 at low temperatures in YbxPt5P, the first of a new family of materials. YbxPt5P (0.20< x <1) phases were synthesized and structurally characterized. They exhibit a large homogeneity width with the Yb ratio exclusively occupying the 1a site in the anti-CeCoIn5 structure. Moreover, the resistivity measurement of a sample analyzed as Yb0.25Pt5P shows it to exist a complete zero-resistance transition with a critical transition temperature of ~0.6 K, possible superconductivity. However, the zero-resistivity transition was not observed in YbPt5P with antiferromagnetic ordering existing solely. First-principles electronic structure calculations substantiate the antiferromagnetic ground state and indicate that 2D nesting around the Fermi level may give rise to exotic physical properties, such as superconductivity. YbxPt5P appears to be a unique case among materials.

Bulk Fermi surfaces of the Dirac type-II semimetallic candidate NiTe2

Here, we present a study on the Fermi-surface of the Dirac type-II semi-metallic candidate NiTe2_2 via the temperature and angular dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measured in single-crystals grown through Te flux. In contrast to its isostructural compounds like PtSe2_2, band structure calculations predict NiTe2_2 to display a tilted Dirac node very close to its Fermi level that is located along the ΓΓ to A high symmetry direction within its first Brillouin zone (FBZ). The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies is found to be in agreement with the first-principle calculations when the electronic bands are slightly shifted with respect to the Fermi level (εF\varepsilon_F), and therefore provide support for the existence of a Dirac type-II node in NiTe2_2. Nevertheless, we observed mild disagreements between experimental observations and density Functional theory calculations as, for example, nearly isotropic and light experimental effective masses. This indicates that the dispersion of the bands is not well captured by DFT. Despite the coexistence of Dirac-like fermions with topologically trivial carriers, samples of the highest quality display an anomalous and large, either linear or sub-linear magnetoresistivity. This suggests that Lorentz invariance breaking Dirac-like quasiparticles dominate the carrier transport in this compound.
