Constructing characters of Sylow $p$-subgroups of finite Chevalley groups

Let $q$ be a power of a prime $p$, let $G$ be a finite Chevalley group over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $U$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$; we assume that $p$ is not a very bad prime for $G$. We explain a procedure of reduction of irreducible complex characters of $U$, which leads to an algorithm whose goal is to obtain a parametrization of the irreducible characters of $U$ along with a means to construct these characters as induced characters. A focus in this paper is determining the parametrization when $G$ is of type $\mathrm{F}_4$, where we observe that the parametrization is "uniform" over good primes $p > 3$, but differs for the bad prime $p = 3$. We also explain how it has been applied for all groups of rank $4$ or less.

Transitive permutation groups with trivial four point stabilizers

In this paper we analyze the structure of transitive permutation groups that have trivial four point stabilizers, but some nontrivial three point stabilizer. In particular we give a complete, detailed classification when the group is simple or quasisimple. This paper is motivated by questions concerning the relationship between fixed points of automorphisms of Riemann surfaces and Weierstrass points and is a continuation of the authors' earlier work.

Imprimitive irreducible modules for finite quasisimple groups

Motivated by the maximal subgroup problem of the finite classical groups we begin the classification of imprimitive irreducible modules of finite quasisimple groups. We obtain our strongest results for modules over fields of characteristic 0, although much of our analysis carries over into positive characteristic. If G is a finite quasisimple group of Lie type, and K an algebraically closed field of cross characteristic, we prove that an imprimitive irreducible KG-module is Harish-Chandra induced. We then specialize to the case when K has characteristic 0 and apply Harish-Chandra philosophy to classify irreducible Harish-Chandra induced modules in terms of Harish-Chandra series, as well as in terms of Lusztig series. One of the surprising outcome of our investigations is the fact that, asymptotically, most of the irreducible KG-modules are imprimitive in this situation. For exceptional groups of Lie type of rank at most 2, and for sporadic groups, we list all ordinary irreducible imprimitive characters.

On the irreducibility of symmetrizations of cross-characteristic representations of finite classical groups

Let $W$ be a vector space over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $H$ be a quasisimple group of Lie type of characteristic $p\ne {\rm char}(k)$ acting irreducibly on $W$. Suppose also that $G$ is a classical group with natural module $W$, chosen minimally with respect to containing the image of $H$ under the associated representation. We consider the question of when $H$ can act irreducibly on a $G$-constituent of $W^{\otimes e}$ and study its relationship to the maximal subgroup problem for finite classical groups.

Supercharacters, symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and related Hopf algebras

We identify two seemingly disparate structures: supercharacters, a useful way of doing Fourier analysis on the group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices with coefficients in a finite field, and the ring of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Each is a Hopf algebra and the two are isomorphic as such. This allows developments in each to be transferred. The identification suggests a rich class of examples for the emerging field of combinatorial Hopf algebras.

Generation of finite simple groups with an application to groups acting on Beauville surfaces

We develop theorems which produce a multitude of hyperbolic triples for the finite classical groups. We apply these theorems to prove that every quasisimple group except Alt(5) and SL_2(5) is a Beauville group. In particular, we settle a conjecture of Bauer, Catanese and Grunewald which asserts that all non-abelian finite simple groups except for the alternating group $\Alt(5)$ are Beauville groups.

On the Character Degrees of Sylow $p$-subgroups of Chevalley Group of Type $E(p^f)$

Let $\F_q$ be a field of characteristic $p$ with $q$ elements. It is known that the degrees of the irreducible characters of the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $GL_n(\F_q)$ are powers of $q$ by Issacs. On the other hand Sangroniz showed that this is true for a Sylow $p$-subgroup of a classical group defined over $\F_q$ if and only if $p$ is odd. For the classical groups of Lie type $B$, $C$ and $D$ the only bad prime is 2. For the exceptional groups there are others. In this paper we construct irreducible characters for the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the Chevalley groups $D_4(q)$ with $q=2^f$ of degree $q^3/2$. Then we use an analogous construction for $E_6(q)$ with $q=3^f$ to obtain characters of degree $q^7/3$, and for $E_8(q)$ with $q=5^f$ to obtain characters of degree $q^{16}/5.$ This helps to explain why the primes 2, 3 and 5 are bad for the Chevalley groups of type $E$ in terms of the representation theory of the Sylow $p$-subgroup.
