Exceptional sets for geodesic flows of noncompact manifolds

For a geodesic flow on a negatively curved Riemannian manifold $M$ and some subset $A\subset T^1M$, we study the limit $A$-exceptional set, that is the set of points whose $ω$-limit do not intersect $A$. We show that if the topological $\ast$-entropy of $A$ is smaller than the topological entropy of the geodesic flow, then the limit $A$-exceptional set has full topological entropy. Some consequences are stated for limit exceptional sets of invariant compact subsets and proper submanifolds.

Variational principle for nonhyperbolic ergodic measures: Skew products and elliptic cocycles

For a large class of transitive non-hyperbolic systems, we construct nonhyperbolic ergodic measures with entropy arbitrarily close to its maximal possible value. The systems we consider are partially hyperbolic with one-dimension central direction for which there are positive entropy ergodic measures whose central Lyapunov exponent is negative, zero, or positive. We construct ergodic measures with zero central Lyapunov exponent whose entropy is positive and arbitrarily close to the topological entropy of the set of points with central Lyapunov exponent zero. This provides a restricted variational principle for nonhyperbolic (zero exponent) ergodic measures. The result is applied to the setting of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ matrix cocycles and provides a counterpart to Furstenberg's classical result: for an open and dense subset of elliptic $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ cocycles we construct ergodic measures with upper Lyapunov exponent zero and with metric entropy arbitrarily close to the topological entropy of the set of infinite matrix products with subexponential growth of the norm.

Exceptional sets for nonuniformly expanding maps

Given a rational map of the Riemann sphere and a subset $A$ of its Julia set, we study the $A$-exceptional set, that is, the set of points whose orbit does not accumulate at $A$. We prove that if the topological entropy of $A$ is less than the topological entropy of the full system then the $A$-exceptional set has full topological entropy. Furthermore, if the Hausdorff dimension of $A$ is smaller than the dynamical dimension of the system then the Hausdorff dimension of the $A$-exceptional set is larger than or equal to the dynamical dimension, with equality in the particular case when the dynamical dimension and the Hausdorff dimension coincide. We discuss also the case of a general conformal $C^{1+α}$ dynamical system and, in particular, certain multimodal interval maps on their Julia set.

On density of ergodic measures and generic points

We provide conditions which guarantee that ergodic measures are dense in the simplex of invariant probability measures of a dynamical system given by a continuous map acting on a Polish space. Using them we study generic properties of invariant measures and prove that every invariant measure has a generic point. In the compact case, density of ergodic measures means that the simplex of invariant measures is either a singleton of a measure concentrated on a single periodic orbit or the Poulsen simplex. Our properties focus on the set of periodic points and we introduce two concepts: close\-ability with respect to a set of periodic points and linkability of a set of periodic points. Examples are provided to show that these are independent properties. They hold, for example, for systems having the periodic specification property. But they hold also for a much wider class of systems which contains, for example, irreducible Markov chains over a countable alphabet, all $β$-shifts, all $S$-gap shifts, ${C}^1$-generic diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold $M$, and certain geodesic flows of a complete connected negatively curved manifold.

Pressures for geodesic flows of rank one manifolds

We study the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of a rank one manifold and we give conditions under which all classical definitions of pressure of a Hölder continuous potential coincide. We provide a large deviation statement, which allows to neglect (periodic) orbits that lack sufficient hyperbolic behavior. Our results involve conditions on the potential, that take into consideration its properties in the nonhyperbolic part of the manifold. We draw some conclusions for the construction of equilibrium states.

Rich phase transitions in step skew-products

We present examples of partially hyperbolic and topologically transitive local diffeomorphisms defined as skew products over a horseshoe which exhibit rich phase transitions for the topological pressure. This phase transition follows from a gap in the spectrum of the central Lyapunov exponents. It is associated to the coexistence of two equilibrium states with positive entropy. The diffeomorphisms mix hyperbolic behavior of different types. However, in some sense the expanding behavior is not dominating which is indicated by the existence of a measure of maximal entropy with nonpositive central exponent.

(Non)Invariance of dynamical quantities for orbit equivalent flows

We study how dynamical quantities such as Lyapunov exponents, metric entropy, topological pressure, recurrence rates, and dimension-like characteristics change under a time reparameterization of a dynamical system. These quantities are shown to either remain invariant, transform according to a multiplicative factor or transform through a convoluted dependence that may take the form of an integral over the initial local values. We discuss the significance of these results for the apparent non-invariance of chaos in general relativity and explore applications to the synchronization of equilibrium states and the elimination of expansions.

Lyapunov spectrum for exceptional rational maps

We study the dimension spectrum for Lyapunov exponents for rational maps acting on the Riemann sphere and characterize it by means of the Legendre-Fenchel transform of the hidden variational pressure. This pressure is defined by means of the variational principle with respect to non-atomic invariant probability measures and is associated to certain $σ$-finite conformal measures. This allows to extend previous results to exceptional rational maps.
