Positive Geometry for Stringy Scalar Amplitudes

We introduce a new positive geometry, the associahedral grid, which provides a geometric realization of the inverse string theory KLT kernel. It captures the full $α'$-dependence of stringified amplitudes for bi-adjoint scalar $ϕ^3$ theory, pions in the NLSM, and their mixed $ϕ$/$π$ amplitudes, reducing to the corresponding field theory amplitudes in the $α'\to 0$ limit. Our results demonstrate how positive geometries can be utilized beyond rational functions to capture stringy features of amplitudes, such as an infinite resonance structure. The kinematic $δ$-shift, recently proposed to relate field theory $\mathrm{Tr}(ϕ^3)$ and NLSM pion amplitudes, naturally emerges as the leading contribution to the stringy geometry. We show how the connection between $\mathrm{Tr}(ϕ^3)$ and NLSM can be geometrized using the associahedral grid.

Goldstone bosons on celestial sphere and conformal soft theorems

In this paper, we study celestial amplitudes of Goldstone bosons and conformal soft theorems. Motivated by the success of soft bootstrap in momentum space and the important role of the soft limit behavior of tree-level amplitudes, our goal is to extend some of the methods to the celestial sphere. The crucial ingredient of the calculation is the Mellin transformation, which transforms four-dimensional scattering amplitudes to correlation functions of primary operators in the celestial CFT. The soft behavior of the amplitude is then translated to the singularities of the correlator. Only for amplitudes in "UV completed theories" (with sufficiently good high energy behavior) the Mellin integration can be properly performed. In all other cases, the celestial amplitude is only defined in a distributional sense with delta functions. We provide many examples of celestial amplitudes in UV-completed models, including linear sigma models and Z-theory, which is a certain completion of the SU(N) non-linear sigma model. We also comment on the BCFW-like and soft recursion relations for celestial amplitudes and the extension of soft bootstrap ideas.

Recursion Relations for One-Loop Goldstone Boson Amplitudes

In this letter, we construct the recursion relations for one-loop planar integrands in the SU(N) non-linear sigma model. This generalizes the soft recursions for tree-level amplitudes in a variety of quantum field theories with special soft limits. The main ingredient is the definition of the one-loop planar integrand, which is fixed by cuts in the sense of generalized unitarity and by requiring the Adler zero on all external legs. We show that this does not uniquely fix the integrand, so additional constraints on the soft behavior of the loop momentum have to be imposed. Our work is the first step in extending modern amplitudes methods for loop amplitudes to effective field theories with special soft limits.

The ChPT: top-down and bottom-up

In this work, higher-derivative corrections of the non-linear sigma model of both even and odd intrinsic-parity sectors are systematically studied, focusing on ordered amplitudes of flavor scalars in massless limit. It should correspond to a theory known as Chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) without external sources and with only single-trace operators. We briefly overview its formal development and apply new S-matrix methods to its amplitude constructions. The bottom-up analysis of the tree-level amplitudes of different orders and multiplicities focuses on the formal structure of general ChPT. Possible theoretical simplifications based on the Kleiss-Kuijf and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations are presented. Finally, in the same context, the comparison with the so-called Z-function, which is connected with string theory, is also discussed.

Dispersive construction of two-loop $P \to πππ$ $(P=K,η)$ amplitudes

We present and develop a general dispersive framework allowing us to construct representations of the amplitudes for the processes $Pπ\toππ$, $P=K,η$, valid at the two-loop level in the low-energy expansion. The construction proceeds through a two-step iteration, starting from the tree-level amplitudes and their S and P partial-wave projections. The one-loop amplitudes are obtained for all possible configurations of pion masses. The second iteration is presented in detail in the cases where either all masses of charged and neutral pions are equal, or for the decay into three neutral pions. Issues related to analyticity properties of the amplitudes and of their lowest partial-wave projections are given particular attention. This study is introduced by a brief survey of the situation, for both experimental and theoretical aspects, of the decay modes into three pions of charged and neutral kaons and of the eta meson.

Higher-order tree-level amplitudes in the nonlinear sigma model

We present a generalisation of the flavour-ordering method applied to the chiral nonlinear sigma model with any number of flavours. We use an extended Lagrangian with terms containing any number of derivatives, organised in a power-counting hierarchy. The method allows diagrammatic computations at tree-level with any number of legs at any order in the power-counting. Using an automated implementation of the method, we calculate amplitudes ranging from 12 legs at leading order, $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$, to 6 legs at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, $\mathcal{O}(p^8)$. In addition to this, we generalise several properties of amplitudes in the nonlinear sigma model to higher orders. These include the double soft limit and the uniqueness of stripped amplitudes.

New Soft Theorems for Goldstone Boson Amplitudes

In this letter we discuss new soft theorems for the Goldstone boson amplitudes with non-vanishing soft limits. The standard argument is that the non-linearly realized shift symmetry leads to the vanishing of scattering amplitudes in the soft limit, known as the Alder zero. This statement involves certain assumptions of the absence of cubic vertices and the absence of linear terms in the transformations of fields. For theories which fail to satisfy these conditions, we derive a new soft theorem which involves certain linear combinations of lower point amplitudes, generalizing the Adler zero statement. We provide an explicit example of $SU(N)/SU(N-1)$ sigma model which was also recently studied in the context of $U(1)$ fibrated models. The soft theorem can be then used as an input into the modified soft recursion relations for the reconstruction of all tree-level amplitudes.

Leading logarithms for mesons and nucleons

This talk describes the work done in calculating leading logarithms in massive effective field theories. We discuss shortly leading logarithms in renormalizable theories and how they can be calculated using only one-loop calculations in effective field theories. The remainder of the talk discusses masses, decay constants, condensates and anomalous processes in mesonic effective field theories like Chiral Perturbation Theory and the expansion of the nucleon mass.

On-Shell Recursion Relations for Effective Field Theories

We derive the first ever on-shell recursion relations for amplitudes in effective field theories. Based solely on factorization and the soft behavior of amplitudes, these recursion relations employ a new rescaling momentum shift to construct all tree-level scattering amplitudes in theories like the non- linear sigma model, Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, and the Galileon. Our results prove that all theories with enhanced soft behavior are on-shell constructible.

Radiative corrections to the Dalitz decay $π^0\to e^+e^-γ$ revisited

We have recalculated the Mikaelian and Smith radiative corrections to the Dalitz decay $π^0\to e^+e^-γ$ beyond the soft-photon approximation, i.e. over the whole range of the Dalitz plot and with no restrictions on the radiative photon. In contrast to the previous calculations, we did not neglect the terms of order higher than $\mathcal{O}(m^2)$ and also included the one-photon-irreducible contribution at one-loop level and the virtual muon loop contribution. The results can then be used also for heavier particles in the final state.

Effective Field Theories from Soft Limits

We derive scalar effective field theories - Lagrangians, symmetries, and all - from on-shell scattering amplitudes constructed purely from Lorentz invariance, factorization, a fixed power counting order in derivatives, and a fixed order at which amplitudes vanish in the soft limit. These constraints leave free parameters in the amplitude which are the coupling constants of well-known theories: Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Dirac-Born-Infeld scalars, and Galileons. Moreover, soft limits imply conditions on the Noether current which can then be inverted to derive Lagrangians for each theory. We propose a natural classification of all scalar effective field theories according to two numbers which encode the derivative power counting and soft behavior of the corresponding amplitudes. In those cases where there is no consistent amplitude, the corresponding theory does not exist.

Rare decay $π^0\to e^+e^-$: on corrections beyond the leading order

The preceding experimental and theoretical results on the rare decay $π^0 \to e^+e^-$ are briefly summarized. Already computed two-loop QED corrections are reviewed and the bremsstrahlung contribution beyond the soft-photon approximation is analytically calculated. The possible further contribution of QCD loop corrections is estimated using the leading logarithm approximation. The complete result can be used to fit the value of the contact interaction coupling $χ^r$ to the recent KTeV experiment with the result $χ^r(M_ρ) = 4.5 \pm 1.0$.

Unification of Galileon Dualities

We study dualities of the general Galileon theory in d dimensions in terms of coordinate transformations on the coset space corresponding to the spontaneously broken Galileon group. The most general duality transformation is found to be determined uniquely up to four free parameters and under compositions these transformations form a group which can be identified with GL(2,R). This group represents a unified framework for all the up to now known Galileon dualities. We discuss a representation of this group on the Galileon theory space and using concrete examples we illustrate its applicability both on the classical and quantum level.

Leading logarithms in N-flavour mesonic Chiral Perturbation Theory

We extend earlier work on leading logarithms in the massive nonlinear O(n) sigma model to the case of SU(N)xSU(N)/SU(N) which coincides with mesonic chiral perturbation theory for N flavours of light quarks. We discuss the leading logarithms for the mass and decay constant to six loops and for the vacuum expectation value <\bar{q}q> to seven loops. For dynamical quantities the expressions grow extremely large much faster such that we only quote the leading logarithms to five loops for the vector and scalar form factor and for meson-meson scattering. The last quantity we consider is the vector-vector to meson-meson amplitude where we quote results up to four loops for a subset of quantities, in particular for the pion polarizabilities. As a side result we provide an elementary proof that the factors of N appearing at each loop order are odd or even depending on the order and the remaining traces over external flavours.

Tree-level Amplitudes in the Nonlinear Sigma Model

We study in detail the general structure and further properties of the tree-level amplitudes in the SU(N) nonlinear sigma model. We construct the flavor-ordered Feynman rules for various parameterizations of the SU(N) fields U(x), write down the Berends-Giele relations for the semi-on-shell currents and discuss their efficiency for the amplitude calculation in comparison with those of renormalizable theories. We also present an explicit form of the partial amplitudes up to ten external particles. It is well known that the standard BCFW recursive relations cannot be used for reconstruction of the the on-shell amplitudes of effective theories like the SU(N) nonlinear sigma model because of the inappropriate behavior of the deformed on-shell amplitudes at infinity. We discuss possible generalization of the BCFW approach introducing "BCFW formula with subtractions" and with help of Berends-Giele relations we prove particular scaling properties of the semi-on-shell amplitudes of the SU(N) nonlinear sigma model under specific shifts of the external momenta. These results allow us to define alternative deformation of the semi-on-shell amplitudes and derive BCFW-like recursion relations. These provide a systematic and effective tool for calculation of Goldstone bosons scattering amplitudes and it also shows the possible applicability of on-shell methods to effective field theories. We also use these BCFW-like relations for the investigation of the Adler zeroes and double soft limit of the semi-on-shell amplitudes.

ChPT calculations of pion formfactors

An overview on chiral perturbation theory calculations of form factors is presented. The main focus is given on the form factors related to the lightest meson, pion, namely: pion decay constant, pion vector and scalar form factor, radiative pion decay and transition form factor. A pure calculation within the effective theory can be extended using further methods, as resonance chiral theory and leading logarithm calculations.

Leading logarithms in the anomalous sector of two-flavour QCD

We add the Wess-Zumino-Witten term to the N=3 massive nonlinear sigma model and study the leading logarithms in the anomalous sector. We obtain the leading logarithms to six loops for π^0 --> γ^*γ^* and to five loops for γ^*πππ. In addition we extend the earlier work on the mass and decay constant to six loops and the vector form factor to five loops. We present numerical result for the anomalous processes and the vector form factor. In all cases the series are found to converge rapidly.

Recursion Relations for Tree-level Amplitudes in the SU(N) Non-linear Sigma Model

It is well-known that the standard BCFW construction cannot be used for on-shell amplitudes in effective field theories due to bad behavior for large shifts. We show how to solve this problem in the case of the SU(N) non-linear sigma model, i.e. non-renormalizable model with infinite number of interaction vertices, using scaling properties of the semi-on-shell currents, and we present new on-shell recursion relations for all on-shell tree-level amplitudes in this theory.

Analytical dispersive construction of $η\to3π$ amplitude: First order in isospin breaking

Because of their small electromagnetic corrections, the isospin-breaking decays $η\to3π$ seem to be good candidates for extracting isospin-breaking parameters $ (m_d-m_u)$. This task is unfortunately complicated by large chiral corrections and the discrepancy between the experimentally measured values of the Dalitz parameters describing the energy dependence of the amplitudes of these decays and those predicted from chiral perturbation theory. We present two methods based on an analytic dispersive representation that use the information from the NNLO chiral result and the one from the measurement of the charged $η\to3π$ decay by KLOE together in a harmonized way in order to determine the value of the quark mass ratio $R$. Our final result is $R=37.7\pm 2.2$. This value supplemented by values of $m_s/\hat{m}$ or even $\hat{m}$ and $m_s$ from other methods (as sum-rules or lattice) enables us to obtain further quark mass characteristics. For instance the recent lattice value for $m_s/\hat{m}~27.5$ leads to $Q= 23.1\pm0.7$. We also quote the corresponding values of the current masses $m_u$ and $m_d$.

Resonance saturation in the odd-intrinsic parity sector of low-energy QCD

Using the large N_C approximation we have constructed the most general chiral resonance Lagrangian in the odd-intrinsic parity sector that can generate low energy chiral constants up to O(p^6). Integrating out the resonance fields these O(p^6) constants are expressed in terms of resonance couplings and masses. The role of eta' is discussed and its contribution is explicitly factorized. Using the resonance basis we have also calculated two QCD Green functions of currents: <VVP> and <VAS> and found, imposing high energy constraints, additional relations for resonance couplings. We have studied several phenomenological implications based on these correlators from which let us mention here our prediction for the pi0-pole contribution to the muon g-2 factor: $a_μ^{π^0} = 65.8(1.2)\times 10^{-11}$.

Renormalization and additional degrees of freedom within the chiral effective theory for spin-1 resonances

We study in detail various aspects of the renormalization of the spin-1 resonance propagator in the effective field theory framework. First, we briefly review the formalisms for the description of spin-1 resonances in the path integral formulation with the stress on the issue of propagating degrees of freedom. Then we calculate the one-loop 1-- meson self-energy within the Resonance chiral theory in the chiral limit using different methods for the description of spin-one particles, namely the Proca field, antisymmetric tensor field and the first order formalisms. We discuss in detail technical aspects of the renormalization procedure which are inherent to the power-counting non-renormalizable theory and give a formal prescription for the organization of both the counterterms and one-particle irreducible graphs. We also construct the corresponding propagators and investigate their properties. We show that the additional poles corresponding to the additional one-particle states are generated by loop corrections, some of which are negative norm ghosts or tachyons. We count the number of such additional poles and briefly discuss their physical meaning.

Chiral expansions of the pi0 lifetime

The corrections induced by light quark masses to the current algebra result for the $π^0$ lifetime are reexamined. We consider NNLO corrections and we compute all the one-loop and the two-loop diagrams which contribute to the decay amplitude at NNLO in the two-flavour chiral expansion. We show that the result is renormalizable, as Weinberg consistency conditions are satisfied. We find that chiral logarithms are present at this order unlike the case at NLO. The result could be used in conjunction with lattice QCD simulations, the feasibility of which was recently demonstrated. We discuss the matching between the two-flavour and the three-flavour chiral expansions in the anomalous sector at order one-loop and derive the relations between the coupling constants. A modified chiral counting is proposed, in which $m_s$ counts as $O(p)$. We have updated the various inputs needed and used this to make a phenomenological prediction.
