NNLO Positivity Bounds on ChPT for a General Number of Flavours

We present positivity bounds, derived from the principles of analyticity, unitarity and crossing symmetry, that constrain the low-energy constants of chiral perturbation theory. Bounds are produced for 2, 3 or more flavours with equal meson masses, up to and including next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), using the second and higher derivatives of the amplitude. We enhance the bounds by using the most general isospin combinations posible (or higher-flavour counterparts thereof) and by analytically integrating the low-energy range of the amplitude. In addition, we present a powerful and general mathematical framework for efficiently managing large numbers of positivity bounds.

Short-distance constraints on the hadronic light-by-light

The muon anomalous magnetic moment continues to attract interest due to the potential tension between experimental measurement [1,2] and the Standard Model prediction [3]. The hadronic light-by-light contribution to the magnetic moment is one of the two diagrammatic topologies currently saturating the theoretical uncertainty. With the aim of improving precision on the hadronic light-by-light in a data-driven approach founded on dispersion theory [4,5], we derive various short-distance constraints of the underlying correlation function of four electromagnetic currents. Here, we present our previous progress in the purely short-distance regime and current efforts in the so-called Melnikov-Vainshtein limit.

Higher-order tree-level amplitudes in the nonlinear sigma model

We present a generalisation of the flavour-ordering method applied to the chiral nonlinear sigma model with any number of flavours. We use an extended Lagrangian with terms containing any number of derivatives, organised in a power-counting hierarchy. The method allows diagrammatic computations at tree-level with any number of legs at any order in the power-counting. Using an automated implementation of the method, we calculate amplitudes ranging from 12 legs at leading order, $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$, to 6 legs at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, $\mathcal{O}(p^8)$. In addition to this, we generalise several properties of amplitudes in the nonlinear sigma model to higher orders. These include the double soft limit and the uniqueness of stripped amplitudes.

Chiral Perturbation Theory at Finite Volume and/or with Twisted Boundary Conditions

In this talk we discuss a number of ChPT calculations relevant for lattice QCD. These include the finite volume corrections at two-loop order for masses and decay constants. The second part is about hadronic vacuum polarization where we present the two-loop ChPT estimate for the disconnected and strange quark contributions. We also present the finite volume corrections at two-loop order. The final part is the one-loop finite volume with twisted boundary conditions contribution to $f_+(q^2)$ and the full $K_{\ell3}$ amplitude

Connected, Disconnected and Strange Quark Contributions to HVP

We calculate all neutral vector two-point functions in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) to two-loop order and use these to estimate the ratio of disconnected to connected contributions as well as contributions involving the strange quark. We extend the ratio of $-1/10$ derived earlier in two flavour ChPT at one-loop order to a large part of the higher order contributions and discuss corrections to it. Our final estimate of the ratio disconnected to connected is negative and a few % in magnitude.

Masses, decay constants and electromagnetic form-factors with twisted boundary conditions

We discuss some of the effects of twisted boundary conditions in finite volume using continuum SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory. We point out how broken cubic symmetry affects the definitions of quantities such as form-factors. Using the $π^+$ as an example, we give one loop results for the mass, decay constants and electromagnetic form-factor and illustrate how the relevant Ward identities are satisfied.

Pion light-by-light contributions to the muon $g-2$

This paper contains some new results on the hadronic light-by-light contribution (HLbL) to the muon $g-2$. The first part argues that we can expect large effects from disconnected diagrams in present and future calculations by lattice QCD of HLbL. The argument is based on the dominance of pseudo-scalar meson exchange. In the second part, we revisit the pion loop HLbL contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We study it in the framework of some models studied earlier, pure pion loop, full VMD and hidden local symmetry for inclusion of vector mesons. In addition we study possible ways to include the axial-vector meson. The main part of the work is a detailed study of how the different momentum regions contribute. We derive a short distance constraint on the $γ^*γ^*\toππ$ amplitude and use this as a constraint on the models used for the pion loop. As a byproduct we present the general result for integration using the Gegenbauer polynomial method.

ChPT meets lattice: finite volume and partial quenching for masses, decay constants and VEVs at NNLO

We discuss finite volume effects and partial quenching for Chiral Perturbation Theory in the mesonic sector. The effects are computed in terms of analytical expressions for masses, decay constants and vacuum expectation values (VEVs) to two-loop order. Numerical examples are presented for a number of interesting and relevant cases. All numerical programs are publically available, the prospects of a combination of these studies with lattice gauge theory computations are discussed briefly.

Finite Volume and Partially Quenched QCD-like Effective Field Theories

We present a calculation of the meson masses, decay constants and quark-antiquark vacuum expectation value for the three generic QCD-like chiral symmetry breaking patterns $SU(N_F)\times SU(N_F)\to SU(N_F)_V$, $SU(N_F)\to SO(N_F)$ and $SU(2N_F)\to Sp(2 N_F)$ in the effective field theory for these cases. We extend the previous two-loop work to include effects of partial quenching and finite volume. The calculation has been performed using the quark flow technique. We reproduce the known infinite volume results in the unquenched case. The analytical results can be found in the supplementary material. Some examples of numerical results are given. The numerical programs for all cases are included in version 0.54 of the CHIRON package. The purpose of this work is the use in lattice extrapolations to zero mass for QCD-like and strongly interacting Higgs sector lattice calculations.

Finite Volume for Three-Flavour Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory through NNLO in the Meson Sector

We present a calculation of the finite volume corrections to meson masses and decay constants in three flavour Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory (PQChPT) through two-loop order in the chiral expansion for the flavour-charged (or off-diagonal) pseudoscalar mesons. The analytical results are obtained for three sea quark flavours with one, two or three different masses. We reproduce the known infinite volume results and the finite volume results in the unquenched case. The calculation has been performed using the supersymmetric formulation of PQChPT as well as with a quark-flow technique. Partial analytical results can be found in the appendices. Some examples of cases relevant to lattice QCD are studied numerically. Numerical programs for all results are available as part of the CHIRON package.

Hadronic light-by-light contribution to $a_μ$: extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio, chiral quark models and chiral Lagrangians

This talk discusses our old work on the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and some more recent contributions. I discuss the various contributions starting with pseudo-scalar meson exchange, the quark- and pion-loop, as well as scalar and $a_1$-exchange. For the $π^0$-exchange I point out a possible large enhancement when only connected contributions are included. For the quark-loop I include some comments about the more recent estimates of this contribution. The pion-loop is discussed in more detail, in particular I discuss our unpublished work on including effects from $a_1$ and the polarizability.

Leading chiral logarithms for the nucleon mass

We give a short introduction to the calculation of the leading chiral logarithms, and present the results of the recent evaluation of the leading logarithm series for the nucleon mass within the heavy baryon theory. The presented results are the first example of leading logarithm calculation in the nucleon ChPT. We also discuss some regularities observed in the leading logarithmical series for nucleon mass. The talk has been presented at "Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum XI".

Leading logarithms for mesons and nucleons

This talk describes the work done in calculating leading logarithms in massive effective field theories. We discuss shortly leading logarithms in renormalizable theories and how they can be calculated using only one-loop calculations in effective field theories. The remainder of the talk discusses masses, decay constants, condensates and anomalous processes in mesonic effective field theories like Chiral Perturbation Theory and the expansion of the nucleon mass.

Leading logarithms for the nucleon mass

Within the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory approach, we have studied the leading logarithm behaviour of the nucleon mass up to four-loop order exactly and we present some results up to six-loop order as well as an all-order conjecture. The same methods allow to calculate the main logarithm multiplying the terms with fractional powers of the quark mass. We calculate thus the coefficients of $m^{2n+1}\log^{(n-1)}(μ^2/m^2)$ and $m^{2n+2}\log^n(μ^2/m^2)$, with $m$ the lowest-order pion mass. A side result is the leading divergence for a general heavy baryon loop integral.

CHIRON: a package for ChPT numerical results at two loops

This document describes the package CHIRON which includes two libraries, chiron itself and jbnumlib. CHIRON is a set of routines useful for two-loop numerical results in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). It includes programs for the needed one- and two-loop integrals as well as routines to deal with the ChPT parameters. The present version includes everything needed for the masses, decay constants and quark-antiquark vacuum-expectation-values. An added routine calculates consistent values for the masses and decay constants when the pion and kaon masses are varied. In addition a number of finite volume results are included: one-loop tadpole integrals, two-loop sunset integrals and the results for masses and decay constants. The numerical routine library jbnumlib contains the numerical routines used in chiron. Many are to a large extent simple C++ versions of routines in the CERNLIB numerical library. Notable exceptions are the dilogarithm and the Jacobi theta function implementations. This paper describes what is included in CHIRON v0.50.

Constraining General 2HDM by the Evolution of Yukawa Couplings

We analysis the constraints of the general two Higgs doublet models via evolving the Yukawa coupling constants to high energy under renormalization group. We consider the appearance of a Landau pole or large off-diagonal Yukawa couplings which cause tree level flavour changing neutral currents. Our study shows the latter condition can be used to answer that how much $Z_2$ symmetry breaking can be allowed in a given 2HDM model.

Effective Theories for QCD-like at TeV Scale

We study the Effective Field Theory of three QCD-like theories, which can be classified by having quarks in a complex, real or pseudo-real representations of the gauge group. The Lagrangians are written in a very similar way so that the calculations can be done using techniques from Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). We calculated the vacuum-expectation-value, the mass and the decay constant of pseudo-Goldstone Bosons up to next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) \cite{Bijnens:2009qm}. The various channels of general $n$ flavour meson-meson scattering of the three theories are systematically studied and calculated up to NNLO \cite{Bijnens:2011fm}. We also calculated the vector, axial-vector, scalar, pseudo-scalar two-point functions and pseudo-scalar decay constant up NNLO order \cite{Bijnens:2011xt}. The analytic expressions of the S parameter for the three different QCD-like theories are obtained at TeV scale. Our results are useful for chiral extrapolation in lattice calculation on theory of strong dynamical and finite baryon density.

Masses, Decay Constants and Electromagnetic Form-factors with Twisted Boundary Conditions

Using Chiral Perturbation Theory at one-loop we analyze the consequences of twisted boundary conditions. We point out that due to the broken Lorentz and reflection symmetry a number of unexpected terms show up in the expressions. We explicitly discuss the pseudo-scalar octet masses, axial-vector and pseudo-scalar decay constants and electromagnetic form-factors. We show how the Ward identities are satisfied using the momentum dependent masses and the non-zero vacuum-expectation-values values for the electromagnetic (vector) currents. Explicit expressions at one-loop are provided and an appendix discusses the needed one-loop twisted finite volume integrals.

Mesonic low-energy constants

We review the status of the coupling constants of chiral Lagrangians in the meson sector, the so-called low-energy constants (LECs). Special emphasis is put on the chiral $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ Lagrangians for the strong interactions of light mesons. The theoretical and experimental input for determining the corresponding LECs is discussed. In the two-flavour sector, we review the knowledge of the $O(p^4)$ LECs from both continuum fits and lattice QCD analyses. For chiral $SU(3)$, NNLO effects play a much bigger role. Our main new results are fits of the LECs $L_i$ both at NLO and NNLO, making extensive use of the available knowledge of NNLO LECs. We compare our results with available lattice determinations. Resonance saturation of LECs and the convergence of chiral $SU(3)$ to NNLO are discussed. We also review the status of predictions for the LECs of chiral Lagrangians with dynamical photons and leptons.

Status of Chiral Meson Physics

This talk includes a short introduction to Chiral Perturbation Theory in the meson sector concentrating on a number of recent developments. I discuss the latest fit of the low-energy constants. Finite volume corrections are discussed for the case with twisted boundary conditions for form-factors and first results at two-loops for three flavours for masses. The last part discusses the extension to other symmetry breaking patterns relevant for technicolour and related theories as well as the calculation of leading logarithms to high loop orders.

Chiral Perturbation Theory and Mesons

The talk contains a short introduction to mesonic Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). In addition four disparate areas where some progress has been made in recent years are discussed. These are the last fit of the order $p^4$ low-energy-constants $L_i^r$ to data, hard pion ChPT, the recent two-loop work on EFT for QCD like theories and the high order leading logarithm calculations in the massive $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model.

Leading logarithms in N-flavour mesonic Chiral Perturbation Theory

We extend earlier work on leading logarithms in the massive nonlinear O(n) sigma model to the case of SU(N)xSU(N)/SU(N) which coincides with mesonic chiral perturbation theory for N flavours of light quarks. We discuss the leading logarithms for the mass and decay constant to six loops and for the vacuum expectation value <\bar{q}q> to seven loops. For dynamical quantities the expressions grow extremely large much faster such that we only quote the leading logarithms to five loops for the vector and scalar form factor and for meson-meson scattering. The last quantity we consider is the vector-vector to meson-meson amplitude where we quote results up to four loops for a subset of quantities, in particular for the pion polarizabilities. As a side result we provide an elementary proof that the factors of N appearing at each loop order are odd or even depending on the order and the remaining traces over external flavours.

Sunset integrals at finite volume

Chiral Perturbation Theory is a useful tool to aid in performing the various extrapolations needed in lattice QCD calculations of physical quantities. These include extrapolations in quark mass, finite lattice spacing and finite size of the lattice. Especially the latter will become more important when the quark masses on the lattice become smaller. Here we develop the needed two-loop integrals at finite volume to do the calculations for masses and decay constants for all general mass cases. I will present results based on an expansion in Bessel functions as well as on a version using theta functions and compare their efficiency. Work is in progress to combine these results with two-loop ChPT calculations.

Two-loop Sunset Integrals at Finite Volume

We show how to compute the two-loop sunset integrals at finite volume, for non-degenerate masses and non-zero momentum. We present results for all integrals that appear in the Chiral Perturbation Therory ($χ$PT) calculation of the pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants at NNLO, including the case of Partially Quenched $χ$PT. We also provide numerical implementations of the finite-volume sunset integrals, and review the results for one-loop integrals at finite volume.

Constraining General Two Higgs Doublet Models by the Evolution of Yukawa Couplings

We study how general two Higgs doublet models can be constrained by considering their properties under renormalization group evolution of the Yukawa couplings. We take into account both the appearance of a Landau pole as well as off-diagonal Yukawa couplings leading to flavour changing neutral currents in violation with experimental constraints at the electroweak scale. We find that the latter condition can be used to limit the amount of Z2 symmetry breaking allowed in a given model.

Leading logarithms in the anomalous sector of two-flavour QCD

We add the Wess-Zumino-Witten term to the N=3 massive nonlinear sigma model and study the leading logarithms in the anomalous sector. We obtain the leading logarithms to six loops for π^0 --> γ^*γ^* and to five loops for γ^*πππ. In addition we extend the earlier work on the mass and decay constant to six loops and the vector form factor to five loops. We present numerical result for the anomalous processes and the vector form factor. In all cases the series are found to converge rapidly.

A new global fit of the $L^r_i$ at next-to-next-to-leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory

A new fit is done to obtain numerical values for the order $p^4$ low-energy-constants $L_i^r$ in Chiral Perturbation Theory. This includes both new data and new calculated observables. We take into account masses, decay constants, $K_{\ell4}$, $ππ$ and $πK$ scattering lengths and slopes and the slope of the pion scalar formfactor. We compare in detail where the changes w.r.t. to the 10 year old "fit 10" come from. We discuss several scenarios for estimating the order $p^6$ constants $C_i^r$ and search for possible values of them that provide a good convergence for the ChPT series. We present two such sets. One big change is that the fits do not have the expected behaviour in the limit of large $N_c$ as well as before.

Chiral Symmetry and Charmonium Decays to Two Pseudoscalars

We apply hard pion Chiral Perturbation Theory to charmonium decays to $ππ$, $KK$ and $ηη$. We first discuss why we expect to be able to provide results for the chiral logarithms in $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c2}$ decays to two pseudoscalars while for the decays from $J/ψ$, $ψ(nS)$ and $χ_{c1}$ no simple prediction is possible. The leading chiral logarithm turns out to be absent for $χ_{c0},χ_{c2}\to PP$. This result is true for all fully chiral singlet states of spin zero and two.

Meson-meson Scattering in QCD-like Theories

We discuss meson-meson scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion for QCD-like theories with general $n$ degenerate flavours for the cases with a complex, real and pseudo-real representation. I.e. with global symmetry and breaking pattern $SU(n)_L\times SU(n)_R\to SU(n)_V$, $SU(2n)\to SO(2n)$ and $SU(2n)\to Sp(2n)$. We obtain fully analytical expressions for all these cases. We discuss the general structure of the amplitude and the structure of the possible intermediate channels for all three cases. We derive the expressions for the lowest partial wave scattering length in each channel and present some representative numerical results. We also show various relations between the different cases in the limit of large $n$.

Two-Point Functions and S-Parameter in QCD-like Theories

We calculated the vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudo-scalar two-point functions up to two-loop level in the low-energy effective field theory for three different QCD-like theories. In addition we also calculated the pseudo-scalar decay constant $G_M$. The QCD-like theories we used are those with fermions in a complex, real or pseudo-real representation with in general n flavours. These case correspond to global symmetry breaking pattern of $SU(n)_L\times SU(n)_R\to SU(n)_V$, $SU(2n)\to SO(2n)$ or $SU(2n)\to Sp(2n)$. We also estimated the S parameter for those different theories.

Hard Pion Chiral Perturbation Theory for $B\toπ$ and $D\toπ$ Formfactors

We use one-loop Heavy Meson Chiral Perturbation Theory (HMCHPT) as well as a relativistic formulation to calculate the chiral logarithms $m^2_π\log{\left(m^2_π/μ^2\right)}$ contributing to the formfactors of the semileptonic $B\rightarrow π$ decays at momentum transfer $q^2$ away from $q^2_\mathrm{max}=(m_B-m_π)^2$. We give arguments why this chiral behavior is reliable even in the energy regime with hard or fast pions. These results can be used to extrapolate the formfactors calculated on the lattice to lower light meson masses.

The Massive O(N) Non-linear Sigma Model at High Orders

We extend our earlier work on the massive $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model to other observables. We derive expressions at leading order in the large $N$ expansion at all orders in the loop expansion for the decay constant, vacuum expectation value, meson-meson scattering and the scalar and vector form factors. This is done using cactus diagram resummation using a generalized gap equation and other recursion relations. For general $N$ we derive the expressions for the $n$-th loop order leading logarithms $\left(M^2/F^2\log(μ^2/M^2)\right)^n$, up to five-loops for the decay constant and vacuum expectation value (VEV) and up to four-loops for meson-meson scattering, the scalar and vector form factors. We also quote our earlier result for the mass. The large $N$ results do not give a good approximation for the case $N=3$. We use our results to study the convergence of the perturbative series and compare with elastic unitarity.

Vector Formfactors in Hard Pion Chiral Perturbation Theory

We use three-flavour hard pion Chiral Perturbation Theory (HPChPT) in both the heavy meson and a relativistic formulation to calculate the chiral logarithms $m^2\log(m^2/μ^2)$ contributing to the formfactors of the $B_{(s)}\rightarrow π,K,η$ and $D_{(s)}\rightarrow π,K,η$ transitions at momentum transfer $q^2$ away from the endpoint $q^2_\mathrm{max}=(m_B-m_M)^2$. We compare our results with CLEO $D\toπ$ and $D\to K$ data. We also calculate the Isgur-Wise function of the $B_{(s)}\rightarrow D_{(s)}$ semileptonic decay away from the endpoint and the chiral logarithms for the pion and kaon electromagnetic formfactor. In two-flavour HPChPT we calculate the chiral logarithms for the pion vector and the scalar formfactors at $s\gg m_π^2$. This allows us to test hard pion ChPT using the existing two-loop calculations for these quantities.

Chiral perturbation theory in the meson sector

The present status of Chiral Perturbation Theory in the meson sector is discussed concentrating on recent developments. This write-up contains short discussions on a listing a few historical papers, the principles behind ChPT, two-flavour ChPT including some comments about the pion polarizability, three-flavour ChPT with a discussion of the recently found relations as tests of ChPT and preliminary results of a new fit of the NLO low-energy-constants (LECs). It discusses somewhat deeper $η\to3π$ and the arguments for the existence of a ``hard pion ChPT'' and its application to $K\to2π$.

Determination of Low Energy Constants and testing Chiral Perturbation Theory at order $p^6$ (NNLO)

We present the results of a search for relations between observables that are independent of the Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (NNLO) Low-Energy Constants (LECs). We have found some relations between observables in $ππ$, $πK$ scattering and $K_{l4}$ decay which have been evaluated numerically using fit 10 in \cite{Amoros:2001cp} for the NLO LECs. We also show some preliminary results for a new global fit of the NLO LECs

Leading Logarithms in the Massive O(N) Nonlinear Sigma Model

We review Buchler and Colangelo's result that leading divergences at any loop order can be calculated using only one-loop calculations and we provide an alternative proof. We then use this method to calculate the leading divergences of and thus the leading logarithmic corrections to the meson mass in the massive O(N) nonlinear sigma model to five-loop order. We also calculate the all-loop result to leading order in the large $N$ expansion by showing that only cactus diagrams contribute and by summing these via a generalized gap equation.

Technicolor and other QCD-like theories at next-to-next-to-leading order

We calculate the vacuum-expectation-value, the meson mass and the meson decay constant to next-to-next-to-leading-order in the chiral expansion for QCD-like theories with general $N_F$ degenerate flavours for the cases with a complex representation, a real and a pseudoreal representation, i.e. with global symmetry and breaking patters $SU(N_F)_L\times SU(N_F)_R\to SU(N_F)_V$, $SU(2N_F)\to SO(2N)$ and $SU(2N_F)\to Sp(2N_F)$. These calculations should be useful for lattice calculations for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and related cases.

Finite Volume Dependence of the Quark-Antiquark Vacuum Expectation Value

A general formula is derived for the finite volume dependence of vacuum expectation values analogous to Luscher's formula for the masses. The result involves no integrals over kinematic quantities and depends only on the matrix element between pions at zero momentum transfer thus presenting a new way to calculate the latter, i.e. pion sigma terms. The full order $p^6$ correction to the vacuum condensate $<\bar q q>$ is evaluated and compared with the result from the Luscher formula. Due to the size of the $p^6$ result no conclusion about the accuracy of the Luscher formula can be drawn.

Isospin Breaking in $K\to3π$ Decays III: Bremsstrahlung and Fit to Experiment

We complete here our work on isospin violation in the $K\to3π$ system. We first calculate $K\to2π$ to the same order as we did $K\to3π$ in papers I and II of this series. This adds effects of order $G_{27} p^2 (m_u-m_d)$ and $G_{27} p^2 e^2$ to earlier work. We calculate also the lowest order Bremsstrahlung contributions, $K\to2πγ,3πγ$. With these and our earlier results we perform a full fit to all available CP conserving data in the $K\to2π,3π$ system including isospin violation effects. We perform these fits under various input assumptions as well as test the factorization and the vector dominance model for the weak NLO low energy constants.

$πK$ Scattering in Three Flavour ChPT

We present the scattering lengths for the $πK$ processes in the three flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) framework at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The calculation has been performed analytically but we only include analytical results for the dependence on the low-energy constants (LECs) at NNLO due to the size of the expressions. These results, together with resonance estimates of the NNLO LECs are used to obtain constraints on the Zweig rule suppressed LECs at NLO, $L_4^r$ and $L_6^r$. Contrary to expectations from NLO order calculations we find them to be compatible with zero. We do a preliminary study of combining the results from $ππ$ scattering, $πK$ scattering and the scalar form-factors and find only a marginal compatibility with all experimental/dispersive input data.

$ππ$ Scattering in Three Flavour ChPT

We present the scattering lengths for the $ππ$ processes in the three flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) framework at next-to-next-to-leading order. We then combine this calculation with the determination of the parameters from $K_{e4}$ and the masses and decay constants and compare with the results of a dispersive analysis of $ππ$ scattering. The comparison indicates a small but nonzero value for the $1/N_c$ suppressed NLO low energy constants $L_4^r$ and $L_6^r$.

$K_{\ell3}$ decays in Chiral Perturbation Theory

The process $K_{\ell3}$ is calculated to two-loop order ($p^6$) in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in the isospin conserved case. We present expressions suitable for use with previous work in two-loop CHPT where the order $p^4$ parameters ($L_i^r$) were determined from experiment. We point out that all the order $p^6$ parameters ($C_i^r$) that appear in the value of $f_+(0)$ relevant for the determination of $|V_{us}|$ can be determined from $K_{\ell3}$ measurements via the slope and the curvature of the scalar form-factor. As a by product we update the value of the CKM matrix element $| V_{us} |$.

Chiral Dynamics in the Meson Sector at two Loops

I give a very short introduction to Chiral Perturbation Theory and an overview of the next-to-next-to-leading order three-flavour calculations done. Exploring Light-Cone Sum Rules for Pion and Kaon Form Factors

We analyze the higher-twist effects and the SU(3)-flavour symmetry breaking in the correlation functions used to calculate form factors of pseudoscalar mesons in the QCD light-cone sum rule approach. It is shown that the Ward identities for these correlation functions yield relations between twist-4 two- and three-particle distribution amplitudes. In addition to the relations already obtained from the QCD equations of motions, we have found a new one. With the help of these relations, the twist-4 contribution to the light-cone sum rule for the pion electromagnetic form factor is reduced to a very simple form. Simultaneously, we correct a sign error in the earlier calculation. The updated light-cone sum rule prediction for the pion form factor at intermediate momentum transfers is compared with the recent Jefferson Lab data. Furthermore, from the correlation functions with strange-quark currents the kaon electromagnetic form factor and the $K\to π$ weak transition form factors are predicted with $O(m_s)\sim O(m_K^2)$ accuracy.

Pion and Kaon Electromagnetic Form Factors

We study the electromagnetic form factor of the pion and kaons at low-energies with the use of Chiral Perturbation Theory. The analysis is performed within the three flavour framework and at next-to-next-to-leading order. We explain carefully all the relevant consistency checks on the expressions, present full analytical results for the pion form factor and describe all the assumptions in the analysis. From the phenomenological point of view we make use of our expression and the available data to obtain the charge radius of the pion obtaining $<r^2 >_V^π=(0.452+-0.013) fm^2$, as well as the low-energy constant $L_9^r(m_ρ)= (5.93+-0.43)10^{-3}$. We also obtain experimental values for 3 combinations of order $p^6$ constants.

QCD and Weak Interactions of Light Quarks

This review contains an overview of strong interaction effects in weak decays starting with a historical introduction. It contains a short overview of semileptonic decays and their relevance for measuring CKM matrix elements. The main part is devoted to the theoretical calculation on nonleptonic matrix elements relevant for $K^0$-$\bar{K^0}$ mixing and $K\toππ$ decays. It concludes with a short summary of rare kaon decays.

Matching the Electroweak Penguins $Q_7$, $Q_8$ and Spectral Correlators

Exact analytical expressions for the $ΔS=1$ coupling $\im G_E$ in terms of observable spectral functions are given. This coupling determines the size of the $ΔI=3/2$ contribution to $ε'$. We show analytically how the scheme-dependence and scale dependences vanish to all orders in $1/N_c$ and NLO in $α_S$ explicitly both for $Q_7$ and $Q_8$. Numerical results are derived for both $Q_7$ and $Q_8$ from the $τ$-data and known results on the scalar spectral functions. In particular we study the effect of all higher dimension operators. The coefficients of the leading operators in the OPE of the needed correlators are derived to NLO in $α_S$.

The Mesonic Chiral Lagrangian of Order $p^6$

We construct the effective chiral Lagrangian for chiral perturbation theory in the mesonic even-intrinsic-parity sector at order $p^6$. The Lagrangian contains 112 in principle measurable + 3 contact terms for the general case of $n$ light flavours, 90+4 for three and 53+4 for two flavours. The equivalence between equations of motion and field redefinitions to remove spurious terms in the Lagrangians is shown to all orders in the chiral expansion. We also discuss and implement other methods for reducing the number of terms to a minimal set.

Two-point Functions at Two Loops in Three Flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory

The vector and axial-vector two-point functions are calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory for three light flavours. We also obtain expressions at the same order for the masses, $m_π^2$, $m_K^2$ and $m_η^2$, and the decay constants, $F_π$, $F_K$ and $F_η$. We present some numerical results after a simple resonance estimate of some of the new ${\cal O}(p^6)$ constants.

Chiral Lagrangians and Nambu-Jona-Lasinio like models

We discuss the low-energy analysis of models involving quarks and four-fermion couplings. The relation with QCD and with other models of mesons and meson plus quarks at low energies is discussed. A short description of how the heat-kernel expansion can be used to get regularization independent information, is given. The anomaly within this class of models and a physical prescription to obtain the correct flavour anomaly while keeping as much of the VMD aspects as possible is discussed. The major part is the discussion within this framework of the order $p^4$ action and of two and some three-point functions to all orders in momenta and quark masses. Some results on hadronic matrix elements are given.

Chiral Perturbation Theory

A short overview of the current state of Chiral Perturbation Theory is given. This includes a description of the basic assumptions, the usefulness of the external field method is emphasized using a simple lowest order example. Then at next-to-leading order the determination of the parameters is discussed. We also present the status of calculations at ${\cal O}(p^6)$. Finally I present the extension into 3 directions: estimates of the free parameters, inclusion of nonleptonic weak and electromagnetic interactions, and inclusion of non-Goldstone fields in the chiral Lagrangian. Hadronic Light-by-Light Contribution to the Muon $g-2$

Mistake in FORTRAN program corrected. The numerical results and conclusions are changed significantly: We present a calculation of the hadronic light-by-light contributions to the muon $g-2$ in the $1/N_c$ expansion. We have used an Extended NJL model and introduced an explicit cut-off for the high energy region. We have then critically studied the relative size of the high energy contributions. Although we find them large we can give a conservative estimate of the light-by-light contribution to $a_μ$ which is $-(11\pm5) \cdot 10^{-10}$. This is between two and three sigmas the expected experimental uncertainty at the forthcoming BNL experiment.

On the tensor formulation of effective vector Lagrangians and duality transformations

Using two different methods inspired by duality transformations we present the equivalence between effective Lagrangians for massive vector mesons using a vector field and an antisymmetric tensor field. This completes the list of explicit field transformations between the various effective Lagrangian methods to describe massive vector and axial vector mesons.

The $B_K$ Parameter in the $1/N_c$ Expansion

We calculate the $B_K$ parameter within the framework of the $1/N_c$ expansion. We essentially use the technique presented by Bardeen, Buras and Gérard but calculate an off-shell Green function in order to disentangle different contributions. We study this Green function in pure Chiral Perturbation Theory (CHPT) first and afterwards in the $1/N_c$ expansion in the presence of an explicit cut-off to determine $B_K$ and the counterterms appearing in CHPT. The high energy part is done using the renormalization group. For the low-energy contributions we use both CHPT and an Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. This model has the right properties to match with the high energy QCD behaviour. We then study explicit chiral symmetry breaking effects by calculating with both massless and degenerate quarks together with the real case. A detailed analysis and comparison with the results found within other approaches is done. Consequences for present lattice calculations of this parameter are then obtained. As final result we get $0.60 < \hat B_K < 0.80$. If $m_s=m_d=0$ we get $0.25 < \hat B^χ_K < 0.55$.

Two- and Three-Point Functions in the Extended NJL Model

The two-point functions in generalized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio models are calculated to all orders in momenta and quark masses to leading order in $1/N_c$. The use of Ward identities and the heat-kernel expansion allows for a large degree of regularization independence. We also show how this approach works to the same order for three-point functions on the example of the vector-pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar three-point function. The inclusion of the chiral anomaly effects at this level is shown by calculating the pseudoscalar-vector-vector three-point function to the same order. Finally we comment on how (vector-)meson-dominance comes out in the presence of explicit chiral symmetry breaking in both the anomalous and the non-anomalous sectors.

Anomalies, VMD and the Enjl Model

We show how the effective action of the Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (ENJL) can be defined in the presence of anomalies in a way that reproduces the flavour anomaly. This necessarily breaks Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) in the usual sense. The same method can be used to construct other chiral effective theories involving constituent quarks and spin-1 mesons that give the correct flavour anomaly. We also comment on how standard VMD is the root of this problem and those observed by previous authors in implementing VMD in the anomalous sector.

Low--Energy Behavior of Two--Point Functions of Quark Currents

We discuss vector, axial-vector, scalar and pseudoscalar two-point functions at low and intermediate energies. We first review what is known from chiral perturbation theory, as well as from a heat kernel expansion within the context of the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model of ref. \cite{12}. In this work we derive then these two-point functions to all orders in the momenta and to leading order in $1/N_c$. We find an improved high-energy behaviour and a general way of parametrizing them that shows relations between some of the two-point functions, which are also valid in the presence of gluonic interactions. The similarity between the shape of the experimentally known spectral functions and the ones we derive, is greatly improved with respect to those predicted by the usual constituent quark like models. We also obtain the scalar mass $M_S = 2 M_Q$ independent of the regularization scheme. In the end, we calculate fully an example of a nonleptonic matrix element in the ENJL--model, the $π^+-π^0$ electromagnetic mass difference and find good agreement with the measured value.

Nambu Jona-Lasinio Like Models and the Low Energy Effective Action of QCD

We present a derivation of the low energy effective action of an extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model to $O(p^4)$ in the chiral counting. Two alternative scenarios are considered on how the ENJL model could originate as a low energy approximation to QCD. The low energy effective Lagrangian we derive includes the usual pseudoscalar Goldstone modes, as well as the lower scalar, vector and axial-vector degrees of freedom. By taking appropriate limits, we recover most of the effective low-energy models discussed in the literature; in particular the gauged Yang-Mills vector Lagrangian, the Georgi-Manohar constituent quark-meson model, and the QCD effective action approach model. Another property of the ensuing effective Lagrangian is that it incorporates most of the short-distance relations which follow from QCD. (We derive these relations in the presence of all possible gluonic interactions to leading order in the $1/N_c$-expansion.) Finally the numerical predictions are compared to the experimental values of the low energy parameters
