Rigorous Anderson-type lower bounds on the ground-state energy of the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We construct rigorous Anderson-type lower bounds on the ground-state energy of the spin-$S$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice. By formulating and optimizing a hierarchy of local cluster motifs ordered by size, we generate a sequence of increasingly tight bounds. A seven-site "hourglass" cluster composed of two corner-sharing tetrahedra furnishes an optimal lower bound that admits a closed-form expression for arbitrary spin $S$. We also derive exact lower bounds for generalized models with further-neighbor exchange, ring exchange, and scalar spin-chirality interactions. For $S=1/2$ and $S=1$, numerical optimization of an 18-site "crown" cluster containing a hexagonal loop yields rigorous lower bounds on the ground-state energy per site of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model with unit exchange, $e_\mathrm{GS} \geq -0.549832$ and $e_\mathrm{GS} \geq -1.632985$, respectively. We compare the resulting bounds with numerical ground-state energy estimates from the literature.

Spin Liquid Landscapes in the Kagome Lattice: A Variational Monte Carlo Study of the Chiral Heisenberg Model and Experimental Signatures

Chiral spin liquids, which break time-reversal symmetry, are of great interest due to their topological properties and fractionalized excitations (anyons). In this work, we investigate chiral spin liquids (CSL) on the kagome lattice arising from the competition between the third-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction across hexagons ($J_d$) and a staggered scalar spin chirality term ($J_χ$). Using variational Monte Carlo methods, we map out the phase diagram and identify various gapped and gapless CSL phases, each characterized by a distinct flux pattern. Notably, the interplay between $J_d$ and $J_χ$ induces a tricritical point, which we analyze using Landau-Ginzburg theory. Additionally, we identify potential signatures of these CSLs-including distinctive spin-spin correlations, anomalies in the static spin structure factor, longitudinal thermal conductivity, and magentoelectric effects-which offer practical guidance for their future experimental detection.

The dynamical structure factor of the SU(3) Heisenberg chain: The variational Monte Carlo approach

We compute the dynamical spin structure factor $S(k,ω)$ of the SU(3) Heisenberg chain variationally using a truncated Hilbert space spanned by the Gutzwiller projected particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea, introduced in [B. Dalla Piazza et al., Nature Physics 11, 62 (2015)], with a modified importance sampling. We check the reliability of the method by comparing the $S(k,ω)$ to exact diagonalization results for 18 sites and to the two-soliton continuum of the Bethe Ansatz for 72 sites. We get an excellent agreement in both cases. Detailed analysis of the finite-size effects shows that the method captures the critical Wess-Zumino-Witten SU(3)$_1$ behavior and reproduces the correct exponent, with the exception of the size dependence of the weight of the bottom of the conformal tower. We also calculate the single-mode approximation for the SU($N$) Heisenberg model and determine the velocity of excitations. Finally, we apply the method to the SU(3) Haldane-Shastry model and find that the variational method gives the exact wave function for the lowest excitation at $k=\pm 2π/3$.

Chiral spin liquids in triangular lattice SU(N) fermionic Mott insulators with artificial gauge fields

We show that, in the presence of a $π/2$ artificial gauge field per plaquette, Mott insulating phases of ultra-cold fermions with $SU(N)$ symmetry and one particle per site generically possess an extended chiral phase with intrinsic topological order characterized by a multiplet of $N$ low-lying singlet excitations for periodic boundary conditions, and by chiral edge states described by the $SU(N)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory for open boundary conditions. This has been achieved by extensive exact diagonalizations for $N$ between $3$ and $9$, and by a parton construction based on a set of $N$ Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave-functions with flux $π/N$ per triangular plaquette. Experimental implications are briefly discussed.

Semiclassical theory of the magnetization process of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model

Motivated by the numerous examples of 1/3 magnetization plateaux in the triangular lattice Heisenberg an- tiferromagnet with spins ranging from 1/2 to 5/2, we revisit the semiclassical calculation of the magnetization curve of that model, with the aim of coming up with a simple method that allows one to calculate the full mag- netization curve, and not just the critical fields of the 1/3 plateau. We show that it is actually possible to calculate the magnetization curve including the first quantum corrections and the appearance of the 1/3 plateau entirely within linear spin-wave theory, with predictions for the critical fields that agree to order 1/S with those derived a long-time ago on the basis of arguments that required to go beyond linear spin-wave theory. This calculation relies on the central observation that there is a kink in the semiclassical energy at the field where the classical ground state is the collinear up-up-down structure, and that this kink gives rise to a locally linear behavior of the energy with the field when all semiclassical ground states are compared to each other for all fields. The magnetization curves calculated in this way for spin 1/2, 1 and 5/2 are shown to be in good agreement with available experimental data.

SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: competition between plaquette and chiral order

We revisit the SU(6) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, which has been predicted to be a chiral spin liquid by mean-field theory [G. Szirmai et al., Phys. Rev. A 84, 011611 (2011)]. Using exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, infinite projected entangled pair states simulations, and variational Monte Carlo simulations based on Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we provide strong evidence in favour of the competing plaquette state, which was reported to be higher but close by in energy according to mean-field theory. This is further confirmed by the investigation of the model with a ring exchange term, which shows that there is a transition between the plaquette state and the chiral state at a finite value of the ring exchange term.

Hall effect of triplons in a dimerized quantum magnet

The celebrated Shastry Sutherland model has a gapped dimer singlet ground state. The material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ serves as a good realization of this model, upto small anisotropies arising from Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. The DM interactions admix a triplet component into the singlet ground state and give rise to weakly dispersing triplon bands. We show that an applied magnetic field splits the triplon modes and opens band gaps. Surprisingly, we are left with topological bands with Chern numbers $\pm 2$. SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ thus supports topologically protected triplonic edge modes and is a magnetic analogue of the integer quantum Hall effect. At a critical value of the magnetic field set by the strength of DM interactions, the three triplon bands touch once again in a spin-1 generalization of a Dirac cone, and lose their topological character. We predict a strong thermal Hall signature in the topological regime.

Of chain-based order and quantum spin liquids in dipolar spin ice

Recent experiments on the spin-ice material Dy2Ti2O7 suggest that the Pauling "ice entropy", characteristic of its classical Coulombic spin-liquid state, may be lost at low temperatures [D. Pomaranski et al., Nature Phys. 9, 353 (2013)]. However, despite nearly two decades of intensive study, the nature of the equilibrium ground state of spin ice remains uncertain. Here we explore how long-range dipolar interactions D, short-range exchange interactions, and quantum fluctuations combine to determine the ground state of dipolar spin ice. We identify a new organisational principle, namely that ordered ground states are selected from a set of "chain states" in which dipolar interactions are exponentially screened. Using both quantum and classical Monte Carlo simulation, we establish phase diagrams as a function of quantum tunneling g, and temperature T, and find that only a very small g_c << D is needed to stabilize a quantum spin-liquid ground state. We discuss the implications of these results for Dy2Ti2O7.

Berry phase induced dimerization in one-dimensional quadrupolar systems

We investigate the effect of the Berry phase on quadrupoles that occur for example in the low-energy description of spin models. Specifically we study here the one-dimensional bilinear-biquadratic spin-one model. An open question for many years about this model is whether it has a non-dimerized fluctuating nematic phase. The dimerization has recently been proposed to be related to Berry phases of the quantum fluctuations. We use an effective low-energy description to calculate the scaling of the dimerization according to this theory, and then verify the predictions using large scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations, giving good evidence that the state is dimerized all the way up to its transition into the ferromagnetic phase. We furthermore discuss the multiplet structure found in the entanglement spectrum of the ground state wave functions.

Interplay of charge and spin fluctuations of strongly interacting electrons on the kagome lattice

We study electrons hopping on a kagome lattice at third filling described by an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with on-site and nearest-neighbour repulsions in the strongly correlated limit. As a consequence of the commensurate filling and the large interactions, each triangle has precisely two electrons in the effective low energy description, and these electrons form chains of different lengths. The effective Hamiltonian includes the ring exchange around the hexagons as well as the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction. Using large scale exact diagonalization, we find that the effective model exhibits two different phases: If the charge fluctuations are small, the magnetic fluctuations confine the charges to short loops around hexagons, yielding a gapped charge ordered phase. When the charge fluctuations dominate, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a resonating plaquette phase with ordered spins and gapless spin excitations. We find that a peculiar conservation law is fulfilled: the electron in the chains can be divided into two sublattices, and this division is conserved by the ring exchange term.

Competing states in the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: Plaquette valence-bond crystal versus dimerized color-ordered state

Conflicting predictions have been made for the ground state of the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: Tensor network simulations found a plaquette order [Zhao et al, Phys. Rev. B 85, 134416 (2012)], where singlets are formed on hexagons, while linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) suggested a dimerized, color ordered state [Lee and Yang, Phys. Rev. B 85, 100402 (2012)]. In this work we show that the former state is the true ground state by a systematic study with infinite projected-entangled pair states (iPEPS), for which the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the so-called bond dimension $D$. Both competing states can be reproduced with iPEPS by using different unit cell sizes. For small $D$ the dimer state has a lower variational energy than the plaquette state, however, for large $D$ it is the latter which becomes energetically favorable. The plaquette formation is also confirmed by exact diagonalizations and variational Monte Carlo studies, according to which both the dimerized and plaquette states are non-chiral flux states.

Tetramerization in a SU(4)-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

The SU(4) Heisenberg model can serve as a low energy model of the Mott insulating state in materials where the spins and orbitals are highly symmetric, or in systems of alkaline-earth atoms on optical lattice. Recently, it has been argued that on the honeycomb lattice the model exhibits a unique spin-orbital liquid phase with an algebraic decay of correlations [P. Corboz et al., Phys. Rev. X 2, 041013 (2012)]. Here we study the instability of the algebraic spin-orbital liquid toward spontaneous formation of SU(4) singlet plaquettes (tetramerization). Using a variational Monte Carlo approach to evaluate the projected wave-function of fermions with $π$-flux state, we find that the algebraic liquid is robust, and that a finite value of the next nearest exchange is needed to induce tetramerization. We also studied the phase diagram of a model which interpolates between the nearest neighbor Heisenberg model and a Hamiltonian for which the singlet-plaquette product state is an exact ground state.

Zero-temperature Monte Carlo study of the non-coplanar phase of the classical bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

We investigate the ground-state properties of the highly degenerate non-coplanar phase of the classical bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with Monte Carlo simulations. For that purpose, we introduce an Ising pseudospin representation of the ground states, and we use a simple Metropolis algorithm with local updates, as well as a powerful cluster algorithm. At sizes that can be sampled with local updates, the presence of long-range order is surprisingly combined with an algebraic decay of correlations and the complete disordering of the chirality. It is only thanks to the investigation of unusually large systems (containing $\sim 10^8$ spins) with cluster updates that the true asymptotic regime can be reached and that the system can be proven to consist of equivalent (i.e., equally ordered) sublattices. These large-scale simulations also demonstrate that the scalar chirality exhibits long-range order at zero temperature, implying that the system has to undergo a finite-temperature phase transition. Finally, we show that the average distance in the order parameter space, which has the structure of an infinite Cayley tree, remains remarkably small between any pair of points, even in the limit when the real space distance between them tends to infinity.

Competition between two- and three-sublattice ordering for S=1 spins on the square lattice

We provide strong evidence that the S=1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interactions on the square lattice possesses an extended three-sublattice phase induced by quantum fluctuations for sufficiently large biquadratic interactions, in spite of the bipartite nature of the lattice. The argumentation relies on exact diagonalizations of finite clusters and on a semiclassical treatment of quantum fluctuations within linear flavor-wave theory. In zero field, this three-sublattice phase is purely quadrupolar, and upon increasing the field it replaces most of the plateau at 1/2 that is predicted by the classical theory.

Multiboson spin-wave theory for Ba2CoGe2O7, a spin-3/2 easy-plane Neel antiferromagnet with strong single-ion anisotropy

We consider the square-lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Hamiltonian extended with a single-ion axial anisotropy term as a minimal model for the multiferroic Ba2CoGe2O7. Developing a multiboson spin-wave theory, we investigate the dispersion of the spin excitations in this spin-3/2 system. As a consequence of a strong single-ion anisotropy, a stretching (longitudinal) spin-mode appears in the spectrum. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra of Zheludev et al. [Phys. Rev. B 68, 024428 (2003)] are successfully reproduced by the low energy modes in the multiboson spin-wave theory, and we anticipate the appearance of the spin stretching modes at 4meV that can be identified using the calculated dynamical spin structure factors. We expect the appearance of spin stretching modes for any S>1/2 compound where the single-ion anisotropy is significant.

Simplex solids in SU(N) Heisenberg models on the kagome and checkerboard lattices

We present a numerical study of the SU(N) Heisenberg model with the fundamental representation at each site for the kagome lattice (for N=3) and the checkerboard lattice (for N=4), which are the line graphs of the honeycomb and square lattices and thus belong to the class of bisimplex lattices. Using infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) and exact diagonalizations, we show that in both cases the ground state is a simplex solid state with a two-fold ground state degeneracy, in which the N spins belonging to a simplex (i.e. a complete graph) form a singlet. Theses states can be seen as generalizations of valence bond solid states known to be stabilized in certain SU(2) spin models.

Three-sublattice order in the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the square and triangular lattice

We present a numerical study of the SU(3) Heisenberg model of three-flavor fermions on the triangular and square lattice by means of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS). For the triangular lattice we confirm that the ground state has a three-sublattice order with a finite ordered moment which is compatible with the result from linear flavor wave theory (LFWT). The same type of order has recently been predicted also for the square lattice [PRL 105, 265301 (2010)] from LFWT and exact diagonalization. However, for this case the ordered moment cannot be computed based on LFWT due to divergent fluctuations. Our numerical study clearly supports this three-sublattice order, with an ordered moment of m=0.2-0.4 in the thermodynamic limit.

Extended quantum U(1)-liquid phase in a three-dimensional quantum dimer model

Recently, quantum dimer models, in which the system can tunnel between different classical dimer configurations, have attracted a great deal of interest as a paradigm for the study of exotic quantum phases. Much of this excitement has centred on the claim that a certain class of quantum dimer model, defined on a bipartite lattice, can support a quantum U(1)-liquid phase with deconfined fractional excitations in three dimensions. These fractional monomer excitations are quantum analogues of the magnetic monopoles found in spin ice. In this article we use extensive quantum Monte Carlo simulations to establish the ground-state phase diagram of the quantum dimer model on the three-dimensional, bipartite, diamond lattice as a function of the ratio μ of the potential to kinetic energy terms in the Hamiltonian. We find that, for μ_c = 0.75 +/- 0.04, the model undergoes a first-order quantum phase transition from an ordered "R-state" into an extended quantum U(1)-liquid phase, which terminates in a quantum critical "RK point" for μ=1. This confirms the published field-theoretical scenario. We present detailed evidence for the existence of the U(1)-liquid phase, and indirect evidence for the existence of its photon and monopole excitations. We also explore some of the technical ramifications of this analysis, benchmarking quantum Monte Carlo against a variety of exact and perturbative results, comparing different variational wave functions. The ergodicity of the quantum dimer model on a diamond lattice is discussed in detail. These results complete and extend the analysis previously published in [O. Sikora et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 247001 (2009)].

Novel Magnetic Phases Revealed by Ultra-High Magnetic Field in the Frustrated Magnet ZnCr2O4

The Faraday rotation technique is used to map out the finite-temperature phase diagram of the prototypical frustrated magnet ZnCr2O4, in magnetic fields of up to 190 T generated by the single-turn coil method. We find evidence for a number of magnetic phase transitions, which are well-described by the theory based on spin-lattice coupling. In addition to the 1/2 plateau and a 3:1 canted phase, a 2:1:1 canted phase is found for the first time in chromium spinel oxides, which has been predicted by a theory of Penc et al. to realize in a small spin-lattice coupling limit. Both the new 2:1:1 and the 3:1 phase are regarded as the supersolid phases according to a magnetic analogy of Matsuda and Tsuneto, and Liu and Fisher.

Quantum Ice : a quantum Monte Carlo study

Ice states, in which frustrated interactions lead to a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy, occur in water ice, in problems of frustrated charge order on the pyrochlore lattice, and in the family of rare-earth magnets collectively known as spin ice. Of particular interest at the moment are "quantum spin ice" materials, where large quantum fluctuations may permit tunnelling between a macroscopic number of different classical ground states. Here we use zero-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations to show how such tunnelling can lift the degeneracy of a spin or charge ice, stabilising a unique "quantum ice" ground state --- a quantum liquid with excitations described by the Maxwell action of 3+1-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. We further identify a competing ordered "squiggle" state, and show how both squiggle and quantum ice states might be distinguished in neutron scattering experiments on a spin ice material.

Simultaneous dimerization and SU(4) symmetry breaking of 4-color fermions on the square lattice

Using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS), exact diagonalization, and flavor-wave theory, we show that the SU(4) Heisenberg model undergoes a spontaneous dimerization on the square lattice, in contrast to its SU(2) and SU(3) counterparts, which develop Neel and three-sublattice stripe-like long-range order. Since the ground state of a dimer is not a singlet for SU(4) but a 6-dimensional irrep, this leaves the door open for further symmetry breaking. We provide evidence that, unlike in SU(4) ladders, where dimers pair up to form singlet plaquettes, here the SU(4) symmetry is additionally broken, leading to a gapless spectrum in spite of the broken translational symmetry.

Supersolid phase and magnetization plateaus observed in anisotropic spin-3/2 Heisenberg model on bipartite lattices

We study the spin-3/2 Heisenberg model including easy-plane and exchange anisotropies in one and two dimensions. In the Ising limit, when the off-diagonal exchange interaction J is zero, the phase diagram in magnetic field is characterized by magnetization plateaus that are either translationally invariant or have a two-sublattice order, with phase boundaries that are macroscopically degenerate. Using a site factorized variational wave function and perturbational expansion around the Ising limit, we find that superfluid and supersolid phases emerge between the plateaus for small finite values of J. The variational approach is complemented by a Density Matrix Renormalization Group study of a one-dimensional chain and exact diagonalization calculations on small clusters of a square lattice. The studied model may serve as a minimal model for the layered Ba2CoGe2O7 material compound, and we believe that the vicinity of the uniform 1/3 plateau in the model parameter space can be observed as an anomaly in the measured magnetization curve.

The effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on the phase diagram and magnetic excitations of SrCu2(BO3)2

The orthogonal dimer structure in the SrCu2(BO3)2 spin-1/2 magnet provides a realization of the Shastry-Sutherland model. Using a dimer-product variational wave function, we map out the phase diagram of the Shastry-Sutherland model including anisotropies. Based on the variational solution, we construct a bond-wave approach to obtain the excitation spectra as a function of magnetic field. The characteristic features of the experimentally measured neutron and ESR spectra are reproduced, like the anisotropy induced zero field splittings and the persistent gap at higher fields.

Zero and finite temperature mean field study of magnetic field induced electric polarization in Ba2CoGe2O7

We investigate the spin-induced polarization in the multiferroic compound Ba2CuGe2O7 using variarional and finite temperature mean field approaches. The compound is described by a spin-3/2 Heisenberg model extended with easy plane anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Applying magnetic field parallel to the [110] axis, three phases can be distinguished: (i) At high magnetic field we find a partially magnetized phase with spins parallel to the fields and uniform polarization; (ii) Below a critical field the ground state is a twofold degenerate canted antiferromagnet, where the degeneracy can be lifted by a finite DM interaction; (iii) At zero field a U(1) symmetry breaking phase takes place, exhibiting a Goldstone-mode. To reproduce the magnetization and polarization measurements reported in Murakawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 137202 (2010)], we introduce an additional term in the Hamiltonian that couples the polarizations on neighboring tetrahedra. This results in the appearance of a canted ferrimagnetic phase for h < 1 T, characterized by a finite staggered polarization, as well as by a finite magnetization along the [-1,1,0] axis that leads to torque anomalies.

Nematic, vector-multipole, and plateau-liquid states in the classical O(3) pyrochlore antiferromagnet with biquadratic interactions in applied magnetic field

The classical bilinear-biquadratic nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice does not exhibit conventional Neel-type magnetic order at any temperature or magnetic field. Instead spin correlations decay algebraically over length scales r ~ \sqrt{T}, behavior characteristic of a Coulomb phase arising from a strong local constraint. Despite this, its thermodynamic properties remain largely unchanged if Neel order is restored by the addition of a degeneracy-lifting perturbation, e.g., further neighbor interactions. Here we show how these apparent contradictions can be resolved by a proper understanding of way in which long-range Neel order emerges out of well-formed local correlations, and identify nematic and vector-multipole orders hidden in the different Coulomb phases of the model. So far as experiment is concerned, our results suggest that where long range interactions are unimportant, the magnetic properties of Cr spinels which exhibit half-magnetization plateaux may be largely independent of the type of magnetic order present.

Three-sublattice ordering of the SU(3) Heisenberg model of three-flavor fermions on the square and cubic lattices

Combining a semi-classical analysis with exact diagonalizations, we show that the ground state of the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the square lattice develops three-sublattice long-range order. This surprising pattern for a bipartite lattice with only nearest-neighbor interactions is shown to be the consequence of a subtle quantum order-by-disorder mechanism. By contrast, thermal fluctuations favor two-sublattice configurations via entropic selection. These results are shown to extend to the cubic lattice, and experimental implications for the Mott-insulating states of three-flavor fermionic atoms in optical lattices are discussed.

Inspired by the recent experiments on Y$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$BaNiO$_5$, (J. F. DiTusa {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Susceptibility of the one-dimensional, dimerized Hubbard model

We show that the zero temperature susceptibility of the one-dimensional, dimerized Hubbard model at quarter-filling can be accurately determined on the basis of exact diagonalization of small clusters. The best procedure is to perform a finite-size scaling of the spin velocity $u_σ$, and to calculate the susceptibility from the Luttinger liquid relation $χ=2/πu_σ$. We show that these results are reliable by comparing them with the analytical results that can be obtained in the weak and strong coupling limits. We have also used quantum Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the temperature dependence of the susceptibility for parameters that should be relevant to the Bechgaard salts. This shows that, used together, these numerical techniques are able to give precise estimates of the low temperature susceptibility of realistic one-dimensional models of correlated electrons.
