Nonintersecting Brownian bridges between reflecting or absorbing walls

We study a model of nonintersecting Brownian bridges on an interval with either absorbing or reflecting walls at the boundaries, focusing on the point in space-time at which the particles meet the wall. These processes are determinantal, and in different scaling limits when the particles approach the reflecting (resp. absorbing) walls we obtain hard-edge limiting kernels which are the even (resp. odd) parts of the Pearcey and tacnode kernels. We also show that in the single time case, our hard-edge tacnode kernels are equivalent to the ones studied by Delvaux [16], defined in terms of a $4\times 4$ Lax pair for the inhomogeneous Painlevé II equation (PII). As a technical ingredient in the proof, we construct a Schlesinger transform for the $4 \times 4$ Lax pair in [16] which preserves the Hastings--McLeod solutions to PII.

Nonintersecting Brownian motions on the unit circle

We consider an ensemble of $n$ nonintersecting Brownian particles on the unit circle with diffusion parameter $n^{-1/2}$, which are conditioned to begin at the same point and to return to that point after time $T$, but otherwise not to intersect. There is a critical value of $T$ which separates the subcritical case, in which it is vanishingly unlikely that the particles wrap around the circle, and the supercritical case, in which particles may wrap around the circle. In this paper, we show that in the subcritical and critical cases the probability that the total winding number is zero is almost surely 1 as $n\to\infty$, and in the supercritical case that the distribution of the total winding number converges to the discrete normal distribution. We also give a streamlined approach to identifying the Pearcey and tacnode processes in scaling limits. The formula of the tacnode correlation kernel is new and involves a solution to a Lax system for the Painlevé II equation of size 2 $\times$ 2. The proofs are based on the determinantal structure of the ensemble, asymptotic results for the related system of discrete Gaussian orthogonal polynomials, and a formulation of the correlation kernel in terms of a double contour integral.

Two Lax systems for the Painlevé II equation, and two related kernels in random matrix theory

We consider two Lax systems for the homogeneous Painlevé II equation: one of size $2\times 2$ studied by Flaschka and Newell in the early 1980's, and one of size $4\times 4$ introduced by Delvaux-Kuijlaars-Zhang and Duits-Geudens in the early 2010's. We prove that solutions to the $4\times 4$ system can be derived from those to the $2\times 2$ system via an integral transform, and consequently relate the Stokes multipliers for the two systems. As corollaries we are able to express two kernels for determinantal processes as contour integrals involving the Flaschka-Newell Lax system: the tacnode kernel arising in models of nonintersecting paths, and a critical kernel arising in a two-matrix model.

Six-vertex model with partial domain wall boundary conditions: ferroelectric phase

We obtain an asymptotic formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with partial domain wall boundary conditions in the ferroelectric phase region. The proof is based on a formula for the partition function involving the determinant of a matrix of mixed Vandermonde/Hankel type. This determinant can be expressed in terms of a system of discrete orthogonal polynomials, which can then be evaluated asymptotically by comparison with the Meixner polynomials.

Tail decay for the distribution of the endpoint of a directed polymer

We obtain an asymptotic expansion for the tails of the random variable $\tcal=\arg\max_{u\in\mathbb{R}}(\mathcal{A}_2(u)-u^2)$ where $\mathcal{A}_2$ is the Airy$_2$ process. Using the formula of Schehr \cite{Sch} that connects the density function of $\tcal$ to the Hastings-McLeod solution of the second Painlevé equation, we prove that as $t\rightarrow\infty$, $\mathbb{P}(|\tcal|>t)=Ce^{-4/3φ(t)}t^{-145/32}(1+O(t^{-3/4}))$, where $φ(t)=t^3-2t^{3/2}+3t^{3/4}$, and the constant $C$ is given explicitly.

Nonintersecting Brownian motions on the half-line and discrete Gaussian orthogonal polynomials

We study the distribution of the maximal height of the outermost path in the model of $N$ nonintersecting Brownian motions on the half-line as $N\to \infty$, showing that it converges in the proper scaling to the Tracy-Widom distribution for the largest eigenvalue of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This is as expected from the viewpoint that the maximal height of the outermost path converges to the maximum of the $\textrm{Airy}_2$ process minus a parabola. Our proof is based on Riemann-Hilbert analysis of a system of discrete orthogonal polynomials with a Gaussian weight in the double scaling limit as this system approaches saturation. We consequently compute the asymptotics of the free energy and the reproducing kernel of the corresponding discrete orthogonal polynomial ensemble in the critical scaling in which the density of particles approaches saturation. Both of these results can be viewed as dual to the case in which the mean density of eigenvalues in a random matrix model is vanishing at one point.

On the joint distribution of the maximum and its position of the Airy2 process minus a parabola

The maximal point of the Airy2 process minus a parabola is believed to describe the scaling limit of the end-point of the directed polymer in a random medium, which was proved to be true for a few specific cases. Recently two different formulas for the joint distribution of the location and the height of this maximal point were obtained, one by Moreno Flores, Quastel and Remenik, and the other by Schehr. The first formula is given in terms of the Airy function and an associated operator, and the second formula is expressed in terms of the Lax pair equations of the Painleve II equation. We give a direct proof that these two formulas are the same.

Riemann-Hilbert Approach to the Six-Vertex Model

The six-vertex model, or the square ice model, with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) has been introduced and solved for finite $n$ by Korepin and Izergin. The solution is based on the Yang-Baxter equations and it represents the free energy in terms of an $n\times n$ Hankel determinant. Paul Zinn-Justin observed that the Izergin-Korepin formula can be re-expressed in terms of the partition function of a random matrix model with a nonpolynomial interaction. We use this observation to obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of the six-vertex model with DWBC. The solution is based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach. In this paper we review asymptotic results obtained in different regions of the phase diagram.

Uniform Asymptotics for Discrete Orthogonal Polynomials with Respect to Varying Exponential Weights on a Regular Infinite Lattice

We consider the large-$N$ asymptotics of a system of discrete orthogonal polynomials on an infinite regular lattice of mesh $\frac{1}{N}$, with weight $e^{-NV(x)}$, where $V(x)$ is a real analytic function with sufficient growth at infinity. The proof is based on formulation of an interpolation problem for discrete orthogonal polynomials, which can be converted to a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and steepest descent analysis of this Riemann-Hilbert problem.
