Mechanical Quantum Sensing in the Search for Dark Matter

Numerous astrophysical and cosmological observations are best explained by the existence of dark matter, a mass density which interacts only very weakly with visible, baryonic matter. Searching for the extremely weak signals produced by this dark matter strongly motivate the development of new, ultra-sensitive detector technologies. Paradigmatic advances in the control and readout of massive mechanical systems, in both the classical and quantum regimes, have enabled unprecedented levels of sensitivity. In this white paper, we outline recent ideas in the potential use of a range of solid-state mechanical sensing technologies to aid in the search for dark matter in a number of energy scales and with a variety of coupling mechanisms.

Non-Markovian collective emission from macroscopically separated emitters

We study the collective radiative decay of a system of two two-level emitters coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide in a regime where their separation is comparable to the coherence length of a spontaneously emitted photon. The electromagnetic field propagating in the cavity-like geometry formed by the emitters exerts a retarded backaction on the system leading to strongly non-Markovian dynamics. The collective spontaneous emission rate of the emitters exhibits an enhancement or inhibition beyond the usual Dicke super- and sub-radiance due to a self-consistent coherent time-delayed feedback.

Quantum Brownian Motion of a particle from Casimir-Polder Interactions

We study the fluctuation-induced dissipative dynamics of the quantized center of mass motion of a polarizable dielectric particle trapped near a surface. The particle's center of mass is treated as an open quantum system coupled to the electromagnetic field acting as its environment, with the resulting system dynamics described by a quantum Brownian motion master equation. The dissipation and decoherence of the particle's center of mass are characterized by the modified spectral density of the electromagnetic field that depends on surface losses and the strength of the classical trap field. Our results are relevant to experiments with levitated dielectric particles near surfaces, illustrating potential ways of mitigating fluctuation-induced decoherence while preparing such systems in macroscopic quantum states.

Mirror-Field Entanglement in a Microscopic model for Quantum Optomechanics

We use a microscopic model, the Mirror-Oscillator-Field (MOF) model proposed by Galley, Behunin and Hu [Phys. Rev. A 87, 043832 (2013)], to describe the quantum entanglement between a mirror's center of mass (CoM) motion and a field. In contrast with the conventional approach where the mirror-field entanglement is understood as arising from the radiation pressure of an optical field inducing the motion of the mirror's CoM, the MOF model incorporates the dynamics of the internal degrees of freedom of the mirror that couple to the optical field directly. The major advantage in this approach is that it provides a self-consistent treatment of the three pertinent subsystems (the mirror's CoM motion, its internal degrees of freedom and the field) including their back-actions on each other, thereby giving a more accurate account of the quantum correlations between the individual subsystems. The optical and the mechanical properties of a mirror arising from its dynamical interaction with a quantum field are obtained without imposing any boundary conditions on the field additionally, as is done in the conventional way. As one of the new physical features that arise from this self-consistent treatment of the coupled optics and mechanics behavior we observe a coherent transfer of quantum correlations from the field to the mirror via its internal degrees of freedom. We find the quantum entanglement between the optical field and the mirror's center of mass motion upon coarse-graining over the internal degree of freedom. Further, we show that in certain parameter regimes the mirror-field entanglement is enhanced when the field interacts resonantly with the mirror's internal degree of freedom, a new result which highlights the importance of including the internal structure of the mirror in quantum optomechanical studies.
