Non-existence of holomorphic isomonodromic deformation of a Higgs bundle

We use the cohomological interpretation of anti-holomorphic derivatives of the isomonodromic deformation of a Higgs bundle, as established in our previous work \cite{HSZ}, to provide a short new proof of the non-existence of holomorphic isomonodromic deformation of a generic $\SL$-Higgs bundle and of any non-unitary rank 2 Higgs bundle over the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_g$, which were previously proved in \cite{biswas}. We also prove the non-existence of holomorphic isomonodromic deformation of any non-unitary rank 3 Higgs bundle over the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_g$.

Strict Arakelov inequality for a family of varieties of general type

Let $f:\, X\to Y$ be a semistable non-isotrivial family of $n$-folds over a smooth projective curve with discriminant locus $S \subseteq Y$ and with general fibre $F$ of general type. We show the strict Arakelov inequality \[\frac{\mathrm{deg}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν}{\mathrm{rank}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν} < {nν\over 2}\cdot\mathrm{deg}\,Ω^1_Y(\log S),\] for all $ν\in \mathbb N$ such that the $ν$-th pluricanonical linear system $|ω^ν_F|$ is birational. This answers a question asked by Möller, Viehweg and the third named author.

Deformation theory of periodic Higgs-de Rham flows

In this note we study the deformation theory of periodic (logarithmic) Higgs-de Rham flows. Under suitable numerical assumptions, this is equivalent to the deformation theory of torsion (logarithmic) Fontaine-Faltings modules. As an application, we formulate an \emph{ordinarity} condition, which provides a sufficient condition for a $p^n$-torsion crystalline representation to deform to a $p^{n+1}$-torsion crystalline representation.

Finiteness of logarithmic crystalline representations

Let $K$ be an unramified $p$-adic local field and let $W$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Let $(X,S)/W$ be a smooth proper scheme together with a normal crossings divisor. We show that there are only finitely many log crystalline $\mathbb Z_{p^f}$-local systems over $X_K\setminus S_K$ of given rank and with geometrically absolutely irreducible residual representation, up to twisting by a character. The proof uses $p$-adic nonabelian Hodge theory and a finiteness result due Abe/Lafforgue.

Finiteness of logarithmic crystalline representations II

Let $K$ be an unramified $p$-adic local field and let $W$ be the ring of integers of $K$. Let $(X,S)/W$ be a smooth proper scheme together with a simple normal crossings divisor and fix positive integers $r$ and $f$. We show that the set of absolutely irreducible representations $π_1(X_{\bar K})\rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_r(\mathbb{Z}_{p^f})$ that come from log crystalline $\mathbb Z_{p^f}$-local systems over $(X_K,S_K)$ of rank $r$ is finite. The proof uses $p$-adic nonabelian Hodge theory and a finiteness result due Abe/Lafforgue.

Finiteness of hyperelliptic and superelliptic curves with CM Jacobians

In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.

Singular Fibers and Kodaira Dimensions

Let $f:\,X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial semi-stable family of varieties of dimension $m$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with $s$ singular fibers. Assume that the smooth fibers $F$ are minimal, i.e., their canonical line bundles are semiample. Then $κ(X)\leq κ(F)+1$. If $κ(X)=κ(F)+1$, then $s>\frac{4}m+2$. If $κ(X)\geq 0$, then $s\geq\frac{4}m+2$. In particular, if $m=1$, $s=6$ and $κ(X)=0$, then the family $f$ is Teichmüller.

Uniformization of $p$-adic curves via Higgs-de Rham flows

Let $k$ be an algebraic closure of a finite field of odd characteristic. We prove that for any rank two graded Higgs bundle with maximal Higgs field over a generic hyperbolic curve $X_1$ defined over $k$, there exists a lifting $X$ of the curve to the ring $W(k)$ of Witt vectors as well as a lifting of the Higgs bundle to a periodic Higgs bundle over $X/W$. As a consequence, it gives rise to a two-dimensional absolutely irreducible representation of the arithmetic fundamental group $π_1(X_K)$ of the generic fiber of $X$. This curve $X$ and its associated representation is in close relation with the canonical curve and its associated canonical crystalline representation in the $p$-adic Teichmüller theory for curves due to S. Mochizuki. Our result may be viewed as an analogue of the Hitchin-Simpson's uniformization theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces via Higgs bundles.

Weierstrass filtration on Teichmüller curves and Lyapunov exponents: Upper bounds

We get an upper bound of the slope of each graded quotient for the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the Hodge bundle of a Teichmüller curve. As an application, we show that the sum of Lyapunov exponents of a Teichmüller curve does not exceed ${(g+1)}/{2}$, with equality reached if and only if the curve lies in the hyperelliptic locus induced from $\mathcal{Q}(2k_1,...,2k_n,-1^{2g+2})$ or it is a special Teichmüller curve in $Ω\mathcal{M}_g(1^{2g-2})$. It also gives an unified interpretation for many known results about the special partial sums of Lyapunov exponents on Teichmüller curves.

On Shimura subvarieties generated by families of abelian covers of $\mathbb{P}^{1}$

We study the locus of abelian Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ in $A_{g}$ and the problem of occurrence of Shimura (special) subvarieties generated by these covers in the Torelli locus $T_{g}$ inside $A_{g}$. We first investigate the existence of Shimura subvarieties in the mentioned locus by some computational methods based on Moonen-Oort works and then exclude many cases using both characteristic $p$ methods and monodromy computations.

On the Severi type inequalities for irregular surfaces

Let $X$ be a minimal surface of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with irregularity $q\geq 2$. We show that $K_X^2\geq 4χ(\mathcal O_X)+4(q-2)$ if $K_X^2<\frac92χ(\mathcal O_X)$, and also obtain the characterization of the equality. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Manetti on the geography of irregular surfaces if $K_X^2\geq 36(q-2)$ or $χ(\mathcal O_X)\geq 8(q-2)$, and we also prove a conjecture that surfaces of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with $K_X^2=4χ(\mathcal O_X)$ are exactly the resolution of double covers of abelian surfaces branched over ample divisors with at worst simple singularities.

On the slope of hyperelliptic fibrations with positive relative irregularity

Let $f:\, S \to B$ be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 2$ with relative irregularity $q_f$. We show a sharp lower bound on the slope $λ_f$ of $f$. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Barja and Stoppino on the lower bound of $λ_f$ as an increasing function of $q_f$ in this case, and we also prove a conjecture of Xiao on the ampleness of the direct image of the relative canonical sheaf if $λ_f<4$.

On the cohomology groups of local systems over Hilbert modular varieties via Higgs bundles

Let $X$ be a Hilbert modular variety and $\mathbb{V}$ a non-trivial local system over $X$ with infinite monodromy. In this paper we study Saito's mixed Hodge structure (MHS) on the cohomology group $H^k(X,\mathbb{V})$ using the method of Higgs bundles. Among other results we prove the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism, give a dimension formula for the Hodge numbers and show that the mixed Hodge structure is split over $\mathbb{R}$. These results are analogous to Matsushima-Shimura [Annals of Mathematics 78, 1963] in the cocompact case and complement the results in Freitag [Book: Hilbert modular forms, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1990] for constant coefficients.

On the minimal number of singular fibers with non-compact Jacobians for families of curves over $\mathbb P^1$

Let $f:X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a non-isotrivial family of semi-stable curves of genus $g\geq 1$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ with $s_{nc}$ singular fibers whose Jacobians are non-compact. We prove that $s_{nc}\geq 5$ if $k=\mathbb C$ and $g\geq 5$; we also prove that $s_{nc}\geq 4$ if ${\rm char}~k>0$ and the relative Jacobian of $f$ is non-smooth.

The monodromy groups of Dolgachev's CY moduli spaces are Zariski dense

Let $\mathcal{M}_{n,2n+2}$ be the coarse moduli space of CY manifolds arising from a crepant resolution of double covers of $\mathbb{P}^n$ branched along $2n+2$ hyperplanes in general position. We show that the monodromy group of a good family for $\mathcal{M}_{n,2n+2}$ is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic or orthogonal group if $n\geq 3$. In particular, the period map does not give a uniformization of any partial compactification of the coarse moduli space as a Shimura variety whenever $n\geq 3$. This disproves a conjecture of Dolgachev. As a consequence, the fundamental group of the coarse moduli space of $m$ ordered points in $\mathbb{P}^n$ is shown to be large once it is not a point. Similar Zariski-density result is obtained for moduli spaces of CY manifolds arising from cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^n$ branched along $m$ hyperplanes in general position. A classification towards the geometric realization problem of B. Gross for type $A$ bounded symmetric domains is given.

The Oort conjecture on Shimura curves in the Torelli locus of curves

Oort has conjectured that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of genus-$g$ curves when $g$ is large enough. In this paper we prove the Oort conjecture for Shimura curves of Mumford type and Shimura curves parameterizing principally polarized $g$-dimensional abelian varieties isogenous to $g$-fold self-products of elliptic curves for $g>11$. We also prove that there do not exist Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g>7$. As a consequence, we obtain a finiteness result regarding smooth genus-$g$ curves with completely decomposable Jacobians, which is related to a question of Ekedahl and Serre.

A characterization of special subvarieties in orthogonal Shimura varieties

Let $Y$ be a subvariety contained in a smooth Mumford compactification of an orthogonal Shimura variety $M \subset A_g$, where $A_g$ is the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ with some level structure, such that $Y$ intersects the boundary of $A_g$ transversally. Then we give necessary and sufficient conditions of André-Oort type for $Y$ itself being the compactification of a special subvariety $Y^0 \subset M$

Deuring's mass formula of a Mumford family

We study the Newton polygon jumping locus of a Mumford family in char $p$. Our main result says that, under a mild assumption on $p$, the jumping locus consists of only supersingular points and its cardinality is equal to $(p^r-1)(g-1)$, where $r$ is the degree of the defining field of the base curve of a Mumford family in char $p$ and $g$ is the genus of the curve. The underlying technique is the $p$-adic Hodge theory.

Nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characterstic via exponential twisting

Let $k$ be a perfect field of odd characteristic and $X$ a smooth algebraic variety over $k$ which is $W_2$-liftable. We show that the exponent twisiting of the classical Cartier descent gives an equivalence of categories between the category of nilpotent Higgs sheaves of exponent $\leq p-1$ over $X/k$ and the category of nilpotent flat sheaves of exponent $\leq p-1$ over $X/k$, and it is equivalent up to sign to the inverse Cartier and Cartier transforms for these nilpotent objects constructed in the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic by Ogus-Vologodsky. In view of the crucial role that Deligne-Illusie's lemma has ever played in their algebraic proof of $E_1$ degeneration and Kodaira vanishing theorem in abelian Hodge theory, it may not be overly surprising that again this lemma plays a significant role via the concept of Higgs-de Rham flow in establishing $p$-adic Simpson correspondence in nonabelian Hodge theory and Langer's algebraic proof of Bogomolov inequality for semistable Higgs bundles and Miyaoka-Yau inequality.

On Shimura curves in the Torelli locus of curves

Oort has conjectured that there do not exist Shimura curves lying generically in the Torelli locus of curves of genus $g \geq 8$. We show that there do not exist one-dimensional Shimura families of semi-stable curves of genus $g\geq 5$ of Mumford type. We also show that there do not exist Shimura curves lying generically in the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 8$. The first result proves a slightly weaker form of the conjecture for the case of Shimura curves of Mumford type. The second result proves the conjecture for the Torelli locus of hyperelliptic curves. We also present examples of Shimura curves contained generically in the Torelli locus of curves of genus $3$ and $4$.

Periodic Higgs subbundles in positive and mixed characteristic

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic $p$ and $X$ a proper smooth scheme over the Witt ring $W(k)$. To an object $(M,Fil^{\cdot},\nabla,Φ)$ in the Faltings category $\mathcal{MF}^{\nabla}_{[0,n]}(X), n\leq p-2$, one associates an étale local system $\V$ over the generic fiber of $X$ and a Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$ over $X$. Our motivation is to find the analogue of the classical Simpson correspondence for the categories of subobjects of $\V$ and $(E,θ)$. Our main discovery in this paper is the notion of periodic Higgs subbundles, both in positive characteristic and in mixed characteristic. In char $p$, it relies on the inverse Cartier transform constructed by Ogus and Vologodsky in their work on the char $p$ nonabelian Hodge theory. A lifting of the inverse Cartier transform to mixed characteristic is constructed, which is used for the notion of periodicity in mixed characteristic. We show a one to one correspondence between the set of periodic Higgs subbundles of $(E,θ)$ and the set of étale sub local systems of $\V\otimes_{\Z_{p}}\Z_{p^r}$, where $r$ is a natural number. The notion turns out to be useful in applications. We have proven, among other results, that the reduction $(E,θ)_0$ of $(E,θ)$ modulo $p$ is Higgs stable, if and only if, the corresponding representation $\V$ is absolutely irreducible over $k$.

Semistable Higgs bundles and representations of algebraic fundamental groups: Positive characteristic case

Let $k$ be an algebraic closure of finite fields with odd characteristic $p$ and a smooth projective scheme $\mathbf{X}/W(k)$. Let $\mathbf{X}^0$ be its generic fiber and $X$ the closed fiber. For $\mathbf{X}^0$ a curve Faltings conjectured that semistable Higgs bundles of slope zero over $\mathbf{X}^0_{\mathbb{C}_p}$ correspond to genuine representations of the algebraic fundamental group of $\mathbf{X}^0_{\mathbb{C}_p}$ in his $p$-adic Simpson correspondence. This paper intends to study the conjecture in the characteristic $p$ setting. Among other results, we show that isomorphism classes of rank two semistable Higgs bundles with trivial chern classes over $X$ are associated to isomorphism classes of two dimensional genuine representations of $\mathbf{X}^0$ and the image of the association contains all irreducible crystalline representations. We introduce intermediate notions strongly semistable Higgs bundles and quasi-periodic Higgs bundles between semistable Higgs bundles and representations of algebraic fundamental groups. We show that quasi-periodic Higgs bundles give rise to genuine representations and strongly Higgs semistable are equivalent to quasi-periodic. We conjecture that a Higgs semistable bundle is indeed strongly Higgs semistable.

$L^2$ and intersection cohomologies for the reductive representation of the fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds with unipotent local monodromy

Let $X$ be a projective manifold, and $D$ be a normal crossing divisor of $X$. By Jost-Zuo's theorem that if we have a reductive representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group $π_{1}(X^{*})$ with unipotent local monodromy, where $X^*=X-D$, then there exists a tame pluriharmonic metric $h$ on the flat bundle $\mathcal V$ associated to the local system $\mathbb V$ obtain from $ρ$ over $X^*$. Therefore, we get a harmonic bundle $(E, θ, h)$, where $θ$ is the Higgs field, i.e. a holomorphic section of $End(E)\otimesΩ^{1,0}_{X^*}$ satisfying $θ^2=0$. In this paper, we study the harmonic bundle $(E,θ,h)$ over $X^*$. We are going to prove that the intersection cohomology $IH^{k}(X; \mathbb V)$ is isomorphic to the $L^{2}$-cohomology $H^{k}(X, (\mathcal A_{(2)}^{\cdot}(X,\mathcal V), \mathbb D))$.

An inverse Cartier transform via exponential in positive characteristic

Let $k$ be a perfect field of odd characteristic $p$ and $X_0$ a smooth connected algebraic variety over $k$ which is assumed to be $W_2(k)$-liftable. In this short note we associate a de Rham bundle to a nilpotent Higgs bundle over $X_0$ of exponent $n\leq p-1$ via the exponential function. Presumably, the association is equivalent to the inverse Cartier transform of A. Ogus and V. Vologodsky for these Higgs bundles. However this point has not been verified in the note. Instead, we show the equivalence of the association with that of Sheng-Xin-Zuo in the geometric case. The construction relies on the cocycle property of the difference of different Frobenius liftings over $W_2(k)$, which plays the key role in the proof of $E_1$-degeration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence of $X_0$ due to P. Deligne and L. Illusie.

Calabi-Yau Varieties with Fibre Structures

Motivated by the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture, we study fibre spaces whose total space has trivial canonical bundle. Especially, we are interest in Calabi-Yau varieties with fibre structure. In this paper, we only consider semi-stable families. We use Hodge theory and the generalized Donaldson-Simpson-Uhlenbeck-Yau correspondence to study the parabolic structure of higher direct images over higher dimensional quasi-projective base, and obtain an important result on parabolic-semi-positivity. We then apply this result to study nonisotrivial Calabi-Yau varieties fibred by Abelian varieties (or fibred by hyperkähler varieties), we obtain that the base manifold for such a family is rationally connected and the dimension of a general fibre depends only on the base manifold.

Maximal families of Calabi-Yau manifolds with minimal length Yukawa coupling

For each natural odd number $n\geq 3$, we exhibit a maximal family of $n$-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds whose Yukawa coupling length is one. As a consequence, Shafarevich's conjecture holds true for these families. Moreover, it follows from Deligne-Mostow and Mostow that, for $n=3$, it can be partially compactified to a Shimura family of ball type, and for $n=5,9$, there is a sub $\mathbb Q$-PVHS of the family uniformizing a Zariski open subset of an arithmetic ball quotient.

An Arakelov Inequality in Characteristic p and Upper Bound of p-Rank Zero Locus

In this paper we show an Arakelov inequality for semi-stable families of algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 1$ over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer maps. We apply this inequality to obtain an upper bound of the number of algebraic curves of $p-$rank zero in a semi-stable family over characteristic $p$ with nontrivial Kodaira-Spencer map in terms of the genus of a general closed fiber, the genus of the base curve and the number of singular fibres. An extension of the above results to smooth families of Abelian varieties over $k$ with $W_2$-lifting assumption is also included.

Higgs bundles over the good reduction of a quaternionic Shimura curve

This paper is devoted to the study of the Higgs bundle associated with the universal abelian variety over the good reduction of a Shimura curve of PEL type. Due to the endomorphism structure, the Higgs bundle decomposes into the direct sum of Higgs subbundles of rank two. They are basically divided into two type: uniformizing type and unitary type. As the first application we obtain the mass formula counting the number of geometric points of the degeneracy locus in the Newton polygon stratification. We show that each Higgs subbundle is Higgs semistable. Furthermore, for each Higgs subbundle of unitary type, either it is strongly semistable, or its Frobenius pull-back of a suitable power achieves the upper bound of the instability. We describe the Simpson-Ogus-Vologodsky correspondence for the Higgs subbundles in terms of the classical Cartier descent.

Polarized Variation of Hodge Structures of Calabi-Yau Type and Characteristic Subvarieties Over Bounded Symmetric Domains

In this paper we extend the construction of the canonical polarized variation of Hodge structures over tube domain considered by B. Gross in \cite{G} to bounded symmetric domain and introduce a series of invariants of infinitesimal variation of Hodge structures, which we call characteristic subvarieties. We prove that the characteristic subvariety of the canonical polarized variations of Hodge structures over irreducible bounded symmetric domains are identified with the characteristic bundles defined by N. Mok in \cite{M}. We verified the generating property of B. Gross for all irreducible bounded symmetric domains, which was predicted in \cite{G}.

Harmonic metrics on unipotent bundles over quasi-compact Kaehler manifolds

In this note, we propose an approach to the study of the analogue for unipotent harmonic bundles of Schmid's Nilpotent Orbit Theorem. Using this approach, we construct harmonic metrics on unipotent bundles over quasi-compact Kähler manifolds with carefully controlled asymptotics near the compactifying divisor; such a metric is unique up to some isometry. Such an asymptotic behavior is canonical in some sense.

Hodge classes associated to 1-parameter families of Calabi-Yau 3-folds

We use $L^2$-Higgs cohomology to determine the Hodge numbers of the parabolic cohomology $H^1(\bar S, j_*\V)$, where the local system $\V$ arises from the third primitive cohomology of family of Calabi-Yau threefolds over a curve $\bar S$. The method gives a way to predict the presence of algebraic 2-cycles in the total space of the family and is applied to some examples.

On the monodromy of the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$

It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$ does {\em not} have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Chow-Kunneth decomposition for universal families over Picard modular surfaces

We discuss the existence of an absolute Chow-Kuenneth decomposition for complete degenerations of families of Abelian threefolds with complex multiplication over a particular Picard Modular Surface studied by Holzapfel. In addition to the work of Gordon, Hanamura and Murre we use Relatively Complete Models in the sense of Mumford-Faltings-Chai of Picard Modular Surfaces in order to describe complete degenerations of families of abelian varieties. We furthermore prove vanishing results for cohomology groups of irreducible representations of certain arithmetic subgroups in SU(2,1) using the non--compact Simpson type correspondence between the $L^2$--Higgs cohomology of the underlying VHS and the $L^2$--de Rham cohomology resp. intersection cohomology of local systems.

Numerical bounds for semi-stable families of curves or of certain higher dimensional manifolds

Given an open subset U of a projective curve Y and a smooth family f:V-->U of curves, with semi-stable reduction over Y, we show that for a sub variation of Hodge structures of rank >2 the Arakelov inequality must be strict. For families of n-folds we prove a similar result under the assumption that the (n,0) component of the Higgs bundle defines fibrewise a birational map.
