Personalization Strategies for End-to-End Speech Recognition Systems

The recognition of personalized content, such as contact names, remains a challenging problem for end-to-end speech recognition systems. In this work, we demonstrate how first and second-pass rescoring strategies can be leveraged together to improve the recognition of such words. Following previous work, we use a shallow fusion approach to bias towards recognition of personalized content in the first-pass decoding. We show that such an approach can improve personalized content recognition by up to 16% with minimum degradation on the general use case. We describe a fast and scalable algorithm that enables our biasing models to remain at the word-level, while applying the biasing at the subword level. This has the advantage of not requiring the biasing models to be dependent on any subword symbol table. We also describe a novel second-pass de-biasing approach: used in conjunction with a first-pass shallow fusion that optimizes on oracle WER, we can achieve an additional 14% improvement on personalized content recognition, and even improve accuracy for the general use case by up to 2.5%.

Uniformization of pp-adic curves via Higgs-de Rham flows

Let kk be an algebraic closure of a finite field of odd characteristic. We prove that for any rank two graded Higgs bundle with maximal Higgs field over a generic hyperbolic curve X1X_1 defined over kk, there exists a lifting XX of the curve to the ring W(k)W(k) of Witt vectors as well as a lifting of the Higgs bundle to a periodic Higgs bundle over X/WX/W. As a consequence, it gives rise to a two-dimensional absolutely irreducible representation of the arithmetic fundamental group π1(XK)π_1(X_K) of the generic fiber of XX. This curve XX and its associated representation is in close relation with the canonical curve and its associated canonical crystalline representation in the pp-adic Teichmüller theory for curves due to S. Mochizuki. Our result may be viewed as an analogue of the Hitchin-Simpson's uniformization theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces via Higgs bundles.

Nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characterstic via exponential twisting

Let kk be a perfect field of odd characteristic and XX a smooth algebraic variety over kk which is W2W_2-liftable. We show that the exponent twisiting of the classical Cartier descent gives an equivalence of categories between the category of nilpotent Higgs sheaves of exponent ≤p−1\leq p-1 over X/kX/k and the category of nilpotent flat sheaves of exponent ≤p−1\leq p-1 over X/kX/k, and it is equivalent up to sign to the inverse Cartier and Cartier transforms for these nilpotent objects constructed in the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic by Ogus-Vologodsky. In view of the crucial role that Deligne-Illusie's lemma has ever played in their algebraic proof of E1E_1 degeneration and Kodaira vanishing theorem in abelian Hodge theory, it may not be overly surprising that again this lemma plays a significant role via the concept of Higgs-de Rham flow in establishing pp-adic Simpson correspondence in nonabelian Hodge theory and Langer's algebraic proof of Bogomolov inequality for semistable Higgs bundles and Miyaoka-Yau inequality.

Semistable Higgs bundles and representations of algebraic fundamental groups: Positive characteristic case

Let kk be an algebraic closure of finite fields with odd characteristic pp and a smooth projective scheme X/W(k)\mathbf{X}/W(k). Let X0\mathbf{X}^0 be its generic fiber and XX the closed fiber. For X0\mathbf{X}^0 a curve Faltings conjectured that semistable Higgs bundles of slope zero over XCp0\mathbf{X}^0_{\mathbb{C}_p} correspond to genuine representations of the algebraic fundamental group of XCp0\mathbf{X}^0_{\mathbb{C}_p} in his pp-adic Simpson correspondence. This paper intends to study the conjecture in the characteristic pp setting. Among other results, we show that isomorphism classes of rank two semistable Higgs bundles with trivial chern classes over XX are associated to isomorphism classes of two dimensional genuine representations of X0\mathbf{X}^0 and the image of the association contains all irreducible crystalline representations. We introduce intermediate notions strongly semistable Higgs bundles and quasi-periodic Higgs bundles between semistable Higgs bundles and representations of algebraic fundamental groups. We show that quasi-periodic Higgs bundles give rise to genuine representations and strongly Higgs semistable are equivalent to quasi-periodic. We conjecture that a Higgs semistable bundle is indeed strongly Higgs semistable.

An inverse Cartier transform via exponential in positive characteristic

Let kk be a perfect field of odd characteristic pp and X0X_0 a smooth connected algebraic variety over kk which is assumed to be W2(k)W_2(k)-liftable. In this short note we associate a de Rham bundle to a nilpotent Higgs bundle over X0X_0 of exponent n≤p−1n\leq p-1 via the exponential function. Presumably, the association is equivalent to the inverse Cartier transform of A. Ogus and V. Vologodsky for these Higgs bundles. However this point has not been verified in the note. Instead, we show the equivalence of the association with that of Sheng-Xin-Zuo in the geometric case. The construction relies on the cocycle property of the difference of different Frobenius liftings over W2(k)W_2(k), which plays the key role in the proof of E1E_1-degeration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence of X0X_0 due to P. Deligne and L. Illusie.
