Post-Newtonian Feasibility of the Closed String Massless Sector

We perform post Newtonian analysis of Double Field Theory as a test of string theory in gravitational sector against observations. We identify the Eddington--Robertson--Schiff parameters $β_{\rm{PPN}}$, $γ_{\rm{PPN}}$ with the charges of electric $H$-flux and dilaton respectively, and further relate them to stress-energy tensor. We show ${β_{\rm{PPN}}=1}$ from weak energy condition and argue that the observation of $γ_{\rm{PPN}}\simeq 1$ signifies the ultrarelativistic equation of state in baryons, or the suppression of gluon condensate.

Small-Instanton Transitions in F-theory

We study the phase transition between G-instantons and D3-branes. A G-instanton is a classical solution to the self-dual equation of the M/F-theory four-form field strength G in the complex fourfold. This phase transition is dual to that between small instantons and 5-branes in the heterotic string. Using G as a background gauge flux, we may dynamically control the gauge symmetry breaking, connect between different vacua of F-theory and understand D3-branes in terms of group-theoretical quantities. We also discuss the resulting chirality change and preservation of anomaly freedom.

Standard Model as a Double Field Theory

We show that, without any extra physical degree introduced, the Standard Model can be readily reformulated as a Double Field Theory. Consequently, the Standard Model can couple to an arbitrary stringy gravitational background in an $\mathbf{O}(4,4)$ T-duality covariant manner and manifest two independent local Lorentz symmetries, $\mathbf{Spin}(1,3)\times\mathbf{Spin}(3,1)$. While the diagonal gauge fixing of the twofold spin groups leads to the conventional formulation on the flat Minkowskian background, the enhanced symmetry makes the Standard Model more rigid, and also stringy, than it appeared. The CP violating $θ$-term may no longer be allowed by the symmetry, and hence the strong CP problem is solved. There are now stronger constraints imposed on the possible higher order corrections. We speculate that the quarks and the leptons may possibly belong to the two different spin classes.

Supergravity in Twelve Dimension

We consider supergravity in twelve dimension, whose dimensional reduction yields eleven-dimensional, IIA, and IIB supergravities. This also provides the effective field theory of F-theory. We must take one direction as a compact circle, so that the Poincaré symmetry and the zero-mode field contents are identical to those of eleven-dimensional supergravity. We also have a tower of massive Kaluza-Klein states to be viewed as the wrapping modes of M2-branes. The twelfth dimension decompactifies only if other two directions are compactified on a torus, restoring different ten dimensional Poincaré symmetry of IIB supergravity, whose missing graviton is provided by components of the rank three tensor field. This condition prevents us from violating the condition on the maximal number of real supercharges, which should be thirty-two. The self-duality condition of the IIB four-form fields is understood from twelve-dimensional Hodge duality. In this framework T-duality is re-interpreted as taking different compactification routes.

Twelve-dimensional Effective Action and T-duality

We propose a twelve-dimensional supergravity action, which describes low energy dynamics of F-theory. Dimensional reduction leads the theory to eleven-dimensional, IIA, and IIB supergravities. Self-duality of the four-form field in IIB supergravity is understood. It is necessary to abandon twelve-dimensional Poincare symmetry by making one dimension compact, which is to be decompactified in some region of parameter space, such that the physical degrees of freedom are the same as those of eleven-dimensional supergravity. This makes T-duality explicit as a relation between different compactification schemes.

On the Standard Model Group in F-theory

We analyze the Standard Model gauge group SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) constructed in F-theory. The non-Abelian part SU(3) x SU(2) is described by singularities of Kodaira type. It is distinguished to naive product of SU(3) and SU(2), revealed by blow-up analysis, since the resolution procedures cannot be done separately to each group. The Abelian part U(1) is constructed by obtaining a desirable global two-form harboring it, using `factorization method' similar to the decomposition method of the spectral cover; It makes use of an extra section in the elliptic fiber of the Calabi-Yau manifold, on which F-theory is compactified. Conventional gauge coupling unification of SU(5) is achieved, without threshold correction from the flux along hypercharge direction.

U(n) Spectral Covers from Decomposition

We construct decomposed spectral covers for bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds whose structure groups are S(U(1) x U(4)), S(U(2) x U(3)) and S(U(1) x U(1) x U(3)) in heterotic string compactifications. The decomposition requires not only the tuning of the SU(5) spectral covers but also the tuning of the complex structure moduli of the Calabi-Yau threefolds. This configuration is translated to geometric data on F-theory side. We find that the monodromy locus for two-cycles in K3 fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds in a stable degeneration limit is globally factorized with squared factors under the decomposition conditions. This signals that the monodromy group is reduced and there is a U(1) symmetry in a low energy effective field theory. To support that, we explicitly check the reduction of a monodromy group in an appreciable region of the moduli space for an $E_6$ gauge theory with (1+2) decomposition. This may provide a systematic way for constructing F-theory models with U(1) symmetries.

What is the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model from F-theory?

We construct gauge theory of SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) by spectral cover from F-theory and ask how the Standard Model is extended under minimal assumptions on Higgs sector. For the requirement on different numbers between Higgs pairs and matter generations (respectively one and three) distinguished by R-parity, we choose a universal G-flux obeying SO(10) but slightly breaking E_6 unification relation. This condition forces distinction between up and down Higgs fields, suppression of proton decay operators up to dimension five, and existence and dynamics of a singlet related to mu-parameter.

Supersymmetric three family chiral SU(6) grand unification model from F-theory

We obtain a supersymmetric three family chiral SU(6) grand unification model with the global family symmetry SU(3)[family] from F-theory. This model has nice features such as all the fermion masses are reasonably generated and there results only one pair of Higgs doublets, realizing the doublet-triplet splitting from the family symmetry SU(3)[family]. The proton hexality is realized toward the proton stability problem. There is a room to fit the three gauge couplings using the F-theory flux idea and we obtain the proton lifetime in the 10^{36-37} yr region.

Weak Mixing Angle and Proton Stability in F-theory GUT

It is pointed out that a class of flipped SU(5) models based on F-theory naturally explains the gauge coupling unification. It is because the group SU(5) x U(1)_X is embedded in SO(10) and E_8. To prohibit the dimension 4 and 5 proton decay processes, the structure group should be SU(3) or smaller. Extra heavy vector-like pairs of {5_{-2},5*_2} except only one pair of Higgs should be also disallowed, because they could induce the unwanted dimension 5 proton decays. We construct a simple global F-theory model considering these points. To maintain sin^2 theta_W^0 = 3/8 at the GUT scale, the fluxes are turned-on only on the flavor branes.

Extended Gauge Symmetries in F-theory

We study gauge symmetry in F-theory in light of global aspects. For this, we consider not only a simple (local) group, but also a semi-simple group with Abelian factors. Once we specify the complete gauge group by decomposing the discriminant, analogous to arranging 7-branes, we can derive the matter contents, their localization and the relation to enhanced groups. Global constraints coming from Calabi--Yau conditions and anomaly cancellations imply a unified group. The semisiple group shows explicit formation of matter curves and nontriviality of its embedding into exceptional group. Also the dual heterotic string vacua with line bundles provide a guide on the unification.

SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) Vacua in F-Theory

The Standard Model group and matter spectrum is obtained in vacua of F-theory, without resorting to an intermediate unification group. The group SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1)_Y is the commutant to SU(5)_t \times U(1)_Y structure group of a Higgs bundle in E_8 and is geometrically realized as a deformation of I_5 singularity. Lying along the unification groups of E_n, our vacua naturally inherit their unification structure. By modding SU(5)_t out by Z_4 monodromy group, we can distinguish Higgses from lepton doublets by matter parity. Turning on universal G-flux on this part, the spectrum contains three generations of quarks and leptons, as well as vectorlike pairs of electroweak and colored Higgses. Minimal Yukawa couplings is obtained at the renormalizable level.

Accions

Axion fields provide the most elegant solution to the strong CP problem. In string compactifications it is difficult to obtain an axion whose decay constant is consistent with current cosmological bounds. We examine this question in theories with accidental U(1) symmetries that appear as low energy remnants of discrete symmetries. We refer to the axion-like particles from the spontaneous breakdown of these symmetries as accions. In such systems, the accion decay constant depends on the vacuum configuration and can be lowered to fit the bounds. Furthermore, we find that such accions with consistent decay constant can be embedded in special vacua of Z_6-II orbifold models with realistic features.

String compactification, QCD axion and axion-photon-photon coupling

It is pointed out that there exist a few problems to be overcome toward an observable sub-eV QCD axion in superstring compactification. We give a general expression for the axion decay constant. For a large domain wall number $N_{DW}$, the axion decay constant can be substantially lowered from a generic value of a scalar singlet VEV. The Yukawa coupling structure in the recent $Z_{12-I}$ model is studied completely, including the needed nonrenormalizable terms toward realistic quark and lepton masses. In this model we find an approximate global symmetry and vacuum so that a QCD axion results but its decay constant is at the GUT scale. The axion-photon-photon coupling is calculated for a realistic vacuum satisfying the quark and lepton mass matrix conditions. It is the first time calculation of $c_{aγγ}$ in realistic string compactifications: $c_{aγγ}={5/3}-1.93\simeq -0.26$.

Heterotic SO(32) model building in four dimensions

Four dimensional heterotic SO(32) orbifold models are classified systematically with model building applications in mind. We obtain all Z3, Z7 and Z2N models based on vectorial gauge shifts. The resulting gauge groups are reminiscent of those of type-I model building, as they always take the form SO(2n_0)xU(n_1)x...xU(n_{N-1})xSO(2n_N). The complete twisted spectrum is determined simultaneously for all orbifold models in a parametric way depending on n_0,...,n_N, rather than on a model by model basis. This reveals interesting patterns in the twisted states: They are always built out of vectors and anti--symmetric tensors of the U(n) groups, and either vectors or spinors of the SO(2n) groups. Our results may shed additional light on the S-duality between heterotic and type-I strings in four dimensions. As a spin-off we obtain an SO(10) GUT model with four generations from the Z4 orbifold.

Gauge Unification via Stable Brane Recombination

We study the transition between parallel and intersecting branes on a torus. Spontaneous symmetry breaking of nonabelian gauge symmetry is understood as brane separation, and a more general intermediate deformation is discussed. We argue that there exists supersymmetry preserving transition and we can always have parallel branes as a final state. The transition is interpreted due to dynamics of the F- and D-string junctions and their generalization to (F, D$p$) bound states. The gauge group and coupling unification is achieved, also as a result of supersymmetry. From the tadpole cancelation condition, we naturally have some class of intersecting brane models as broken phases of Type I theory with SO(32) gauge group.

Spectra of Heterotic Strings on Orbifolds

We obtain the spectrum of heterotic strings compactified on orbifolds, focusing on its algebraic structure. Affine Lie algebra provides its current algebra and representations. In particular the twisted spectrum and the Abelian charge are understood. The twisted version of algebra is used in the homomorphism from the orbifold action to the group action. The relation between the conformal weight and the mass gives a handy rule.
