Characterizing the temporal rotation and radial twist of the interference pattern of vortex beam

We experimentally and theoretically characterize the temporal rotation and radial twist of the interference pattern of vortex beam with its conjugate copy. To quantitatively study the temporal rotation and radial twist, we controllably modify the conjugate beam with a frequency or wavefront curvature difference using a movable Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The effects of the physical parameters (i.e., the topological charge, frequency difference and wavefront curvature difference of the vortex beams) on the temporal rotation as well as radial twist are systematically explored. We further measure two parameters, the rotation velocity $Ω$ and twist coefficient $α$, respectively, to characterize the degree of the temporal rotation and radial twist of the interference pattern. The theory of the interference model on vortex beams have good agreements with the experimental results. This work is favorite to study the detailed structure of the interference pattern and manipulate matter with superimposed vortex beams.

Spin-orbital-angular-momentum-coupled quantum gases

We briefly review the recent progress of theories and experiments on spin-orbital-angular-momentum (SOAM)-coupled quantum gases. The coupling between the intrinsic degree of freedom of particles and their external orbital motions widely exists in universe, and leads to a broad variety of fundamental phenomena both in the classical physics and quantum mechanics. Recent realization of synthetic SOAM coupling in cold atoms has attracted a great deal of attention, and stimulates a large amount of considerations on exotic quantum phases in both Bose and Fermi gases. In this review, we present a basic idea of engineering SOAM coupling in neutral atoms, starting from a semiclassical description of atom-light interaction. Unique features of the single-particle physics in the presence of SOAM coupling are discussed. The intriguing ground-state quantum phases of weakly interacting Bose gases are introduced, with emphasis on a so-called angular stripe phase, which has yet been observed at present. It is demonstrated how to generate a stable giant vortex in a SOAM-coupled Fermi superfluid. We also discuss topological characters of a Fermi superfluid in the presence of SOAM coupling. We then introduce the experimental achievement of SOAM coupling in $^{87}$Rb Bose gases and its first observation of phase transitions. The most recent development of SOAM-coupled Bose gases in experiments is also summarized. Regarding the controllability of ultracold quantum gases, it opens a new era, on the quantum simulation point of view, to study the fundamental physics resulted from SOAM coupling as well as newly emergent quantum phases.

Universal relations for spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in two and three dimensions

We present a comprehensive derivation of a set of universal relations for spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gases in three or two dimension, which follow from the short-range behavior of the two-body physics. Besides the adiabatic energy relations, the large-momentum distribution, the grand canonical potential and pressure relation derived in our previous work for three-dimensional systems {[}Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 060408 (2018){]}, we further derive high-frequency tail of the radio-frequency spectroscopy and the short-range behavior of the pair correlation function. In addition, we also extend the derivation to two-dimensional systems with Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling. To simply demonstrate how the spin-orbit-coupling effect modifies the two-body short-range behavior, we solve the two-body problem in the sub-Hilbert space of zero center-of-mass momentum and zero total angular momentum, and perturbatively take the spin-orbit-coupling effect into account at short distance, since the strength of the spin-orbit coupling should be much smaller than the corresponding scale of the finite range of interatomic interactions. The universal asymptotic forms of the two-body wave function at short distance are then derived, which do not depend on the short-range details of interatomic potentials. We find that new scattering parameters need to be introduced because of spin-orbit coupling, besides the traditional $s$- and $p$-wave scattering length (volume) and effective ranges. This is a general and unique feature for spin-orbit-coupled systems. We show how these two-body parameters characterize the universal relations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. This work probably shed light for understanding the profound properties of the many-body quantum systems in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling.

Expansion dynamics of a spherical Bose-Einstein condensate

We experimentally and theoretically observe the expansion behaviors of a spherical Bose-Einstein condensate. A rubidium condensate is produced in an isotropic optical dipole trap with an asphericity of 0.037. We measure the variation of the condensate size during the expansion process. The free expansion of the condensate is isotropic, which is different from that of the condensate usually produced in the anisotropic trap. The expansion in the short time is speeding and then after a long time the expansion velocity asymptotically approaches a constant value. We derive an analytic solution of the expansion behavior based on the spherical symmetry, allowing a quantitative comparison with the experimental measurement. The interaction energy of the condensate is gradually converted into the kinetic energy at the beginning of the expansion and the kinetic energy dominates after a long-time expansion. We obtain the interaction energy of the condensate in the trap by probing the expansion velocity, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction.

Two-body state with p-wave interaction in one-dimensional waveguides under transversely anisotropic confinement

We theoretically study two atoms with $p$-wave interaction in a one-dimensional waveguide, and investigate how the transverse anisotropy of the confinement affects the two-body state, especially, the properties of the resonance. For bound-state solution, we find there are totally three two-body bound states due to the richness of the orbital magnetic quantum number of $p$-wave interaction, while only one bound state is supported by $s$-wave interaction. Two of them become nondegenerate due to the breaking of the rotation symmetry under transversely anisotropic confinement. For scattering solution, the effective one-dimensional scattering amplitude and scattering length are derived. We find the position of the $p$-wave confinement-induced resonance shifts apparently as the transverse anisotropy increases. In addition, a two-channel mechanism for confinement-induced resonance in a one-dimensional waveguide is generalized to $p$-wave interaction, which was proposed only for $s$-wave interaction before. All our calculations are based on the parameterization of the $^{40}$K atom experiments, and can be confirmed in future experiments.

Manipulation of p-wave scattering of cold atoms in low dimensions using the magnetic field vector

It is well-known that the magnetic Feshbach resonances of cold atoms are sensitive to the magnitude of the external magnetic field. Much less attention has been paid to the direction of such a field. In this work we calculate the scattering properties of spin polarized fermionic atoms in reduced dimensions, near a p-wave Feshbach resonance. Because of spatial anisotropy of the p-wave interaction, the scattering has nontrivial dependence on both the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic field. In addition, we identify an inelastic scattering process which is impossible in the isotropic-interaction model; the rate of this process depends considerably on the direction of the magnetic field. Significantly, an EPR entangled pair of identical fermions may be produced during this inelastic collision. This work opens a new method to manipulate resonant cold atomic interactions.

Virial expansion of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance

We theoretically investigate the high-temperature thermodynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance, by using the second-order quantum virial expansion, and point out some new features compared to the broad resonance. The interatomic interaction is modeled by the pseudopotential with an additional parameter, i.e., the effective range, to characterize the narrow resonance width. Deeply inside the width of a narrow Feshbach resonance, we find the second virial coefficient evolves with the effective range from the well-known universal value 1/4 in the broad-resonance limit to one another value 1/2 in the narrow-resonance limit. This means the Fermi gas is more strongly interacted at the narrow resonance. In addition, far beyond the resonance width, we find the harmonically trapped Fermi gas still manifests appreciable interaction effect across a narrow Feshbach resonance, which is contrary to our knowledge of the broad Feshbach resonance. All our results can be directly tested in current narrow Feshbach resonance experiments, which are generally carried out in a harmonic trap.

Momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy of a spin-orbit coupled atomic Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance in harmonic traps

We theoretically investigate the momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy of a harmonically trapped atomic Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance in the presence of equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. The system is qualitatively modeled as an ideal gas mixture of atoms and molecules, in which the properties of molecules, such as the wavefunction, binding energy and effective mass, are determined from the two-particle solution of two-interacting atoms. We calculate separately the radio-frequency response from atoms and molecules at finite temperatures by using the standard Fermi golden rule, and take into account the effect of harmonic traps within local density approximation. The total radio-frequency spectroscopy is discussed, as functions of temperature and spin-orbit coupling strength. Our results give a qualitative picture of radio-frequency spectroscopy of a resonantly interacting spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas and can be directly tested in atomic Fermi gases of K40 atoms at Shanxi University and of Li6 atoms at MIT.

Two-channel model description of confinement-induced Feshbach molecules

Using a two-channel model, we investigate theoretically the binding energy of confinement-induced Feshbach molecules in two- and one-dimensional ultracold atomic systems, near a Feshbach resonance. We show that the two-channel prediction will evidently deviate from the simple single-channel theory as the width of Feshbach resonances decreases. For one-dimensional system, we perform a full two-channel calculation, with the inclusion of bare interatomic interactions in the open channel. Away from the resonance, we find a sizable correction to the binding energy, if we neglect incorrectly the bare interatomic interactions as in the previous work [Dickerscheid and Stoof, Phys. Rev. A 72, 053625 (2005)]. We compare our theoretical results with existing experimental data and present predictions for narrow Feshbach resonances that could be tested in future experiments.

Collective Oscillations of an Imbalanced Fermi Gas: Axial Compression Modes and Polaron Effective Mass

We investigate the low-lying compression modes of a unitary Fermi gas with imbalanced spin populations. For low polarization, the strong coupling between the two spin components leads to a hydrodynamic behavior of the cloud. For large population imbalance we observe a decoupling of the oscillations of the two spin components, giving access to the effective mass of the Fermi polaron, a quasi-particle composed of an impurity dressed by particle-hole pair excitations in a surrounding Fermi sea. We find $m^*/m=1.17(10)$, in agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions.
