Ellis drainhole solution in Einstein-Æther gravity and the axial gravitational quasinormal modes

In this work, the Ellis drainhole solution is derived in Einstein-Æther gravity, and subsequently, the axial quasinormal modes of the resulting drainhole are investigated. Owing to the presence of a minimally coupled scalar field with antiorthodox coupling polarity, the resultant metric solution is featured by a throat instead of a horizon, for which static æther solution becomes feasible. Moreover, the derived master equations for the axial gravitational perturbations consist of two coupled vector degrees of freedom. By utilizing the finite difference method, the temporal profiles of the quasinormal oscillations are evaluated, and, subsequently, the complex frequencies are extracted and compared against the specific values obtained by the WKB method when the coupling is turned off. Besides, the effect of the coupling on the low-lying quasinormal spectrum is explored, and its possible physical relevance is discussed.

Quasinormal modes in two-photon autocorrelation and the geometric-optics approximation

In this work, we study the black hole light echoes in terms of the two-photon autocorrelation and explore their connection with the quasinormal modes. It is shown that the above time-domain phenomenon can be analyzed by utilizing the well-known frequency-domain relations between the quasinormal modes and characteristic parameters of null geodesics. We found that the time-domain correlator, obtained by the inverse Fourier transform, naturally acquires the echo feature, which can be attributed to a collective effect of the asymptotic poles through a weighted summation of the squared modulus of the relevant Green's functions. Specifically, the contour integral leads to a summation taking over both the overtone index and angular momentum. Moreover, the dominant contributions to the light echoes are from those in the eikonal limit, consistent with the existing findings using the geometric-optics arguments. For the Schwarzschild black holes, we demonstrate the results numerically by considering a transient spherical light source. Also, for the Kerr spacetimes, we point out a potential difference between the resulting light echoes using the geometric-optics approach and those obtained by the black hole perturbation theory. Possible astrophysical implications of the present study are addressed.

Centrality dependence of multiplicity fluctuations from a hydrodynamical approach

As one of the possible signals for the whereabouts of the critical point on the QCD phase diagram, recently, the multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions have aroused much attention. It is a crucial observable of the Beam Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In this work, we investigate the centrality dependence of the multiplicity fluctuations regarding the recent measurements from STAR Collaboration. By employing a hydrodynamical approach, the present study is dedicated to the noncritical aspects of the phenomenon. To be specific, in addition to the thermal fluctuations, finite volume corrections, and resonance decay at the freeze-out surface, the model is focused on the properties of the hydrodynamic expansion of the system and the event-by-event initial fluctuations. It is understood that the real signal of the critical point can only be obtained after appropriately subtracting the background, the latter is investigated in the present work. Besides the experimental data, our results are also compared to those of the hadronic resonance gas, as well as transport models.

Constraints of general screened modified gravities from comprehensive analysis of binary pulsars

Testing gravity by binary pulsars nowadays becomes a key issue. Screened modified gravity is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanism in order to satisfy the tight Solar System tests. In this paper, we investigate how the screening mechanism affects the orbital dynamics of binary pulsars, and calculate in detail the five post-Keplerian (PK) parameters in this theory. These parameters differ from those of general relativity (GR), and the differences are quantified by the scalar charges, which lead to the dipole radiation in this theory. We combine the observables of PK parameters for the ten binary pulsars, respectively, to place the constraints on the scalar charges and possible deviations from GR. The dipole radiation in the neutron star (NS) - white dwarf (WD) binaries leads to more stringent constraints on deviations from GR. The most constraining systems for the scalar charges of NS and WD are PSR~B1913$+$16 and PSR~J1738$+$0333, respectively. The results of all tests exclude significant strong-field deviations and show good agreement with GR.

Cosmic evolution of dark energy in a generalized Rastall gravity

In this work, we propose a scheme for cosmic evolution in a generalized Rastall gravity. In our approach, the role of dark energy is taken by the non-conserved sector of the stress energy-momentum tensor. The resultant cosmic evolution is found to naturally consists of three stages, namely, radiation dominated, ordinary matter dominated, as well as dark energy and dark matter dominated eras. Furthermore, for the present model, it is demonstrated that the eventual fate of the Universe is mostly insensitive to the initial conditions, in contrast to the standard $Λ$CDM model. In particular, the solution displays the properties of a dynamic attractor, which is reminiscent of quintessence and k-essence models. Subsequently, the cosmic coincidence problem is averted. The amount of deviation from a conserved stress energy-momentum tensor is shown to be more remarkable during the period when the dark energy evolves more rapidly. On the other hand, the conservation law is largely restored for the infinite past and future. The implications of the present approach are addressed.

Dirac quasinormal modes of power-Maxwell charged black holes in Rastall gravity

In this paper, we study the quasinormal modes of the massless Dirac field for charged black holes in Rastall gravity. The spherically symmetric black hole solutions in question are characterized by the presence of a power-Maxwell field, surrounded by the quintessence fluid. The calculations are carried out by employing the WKB approximations up to the thirteenth order, as well as the matrix method. The temporal evolution of the quasinormal modes is investigated by using the finite difference method. Through numerical simulations, the properties of the quasinormal frequencies are analyzed, including those for the extremal black holes. Among others, we explore the case of a second type of extremal black holes regarding the Nariai solution, where the cosmical and event horizon coincide. The results obtained by the WKB approaches are found to be mostly consistent with those by the matrix method. It is demonstrated that the black hole solutions for Rastall gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes are equivalent to those in Einstein gravity, featured by different asymptotical spacetime properties. As one of its possible consequences, we also investigate the behavior of the late-time tails of quasinormal models in the present model. It is found that the asymptotical behavior of the late-time tails of quasinormal modes in Rastall theory is governed by the asymptotical properties of the spacetimes of their counterparts in Einstein gravity.

Gyroscope precession frequency analysis of a five dimensional charged rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole

In this paper, we study the spin precession frequency of a test gyroscope attached to a stationary observer in the five dimensional rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole (RKKBH). We derive the conditions under which the test gyroscope moves along a timelike trajectory in this geometry and the regions where the spin precession frequency diverges. The magnitude of the gyroscope precession frequency around KK black hole diverges at two spatial locations outside the event horizon. However in the static case, the behavior of the Lense Thirring frequency of a gyroscope around KK black hole is much like an ordinary Schwarzschild black hole. Since a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole is a generalization of Kerr-Newman black hole, we present two mass-independent schemes to distinguish these two spacetimes.

Hydrodynamic results on multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions

Multiplicity fluctuations are one of the most crucial observables in the Beam Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. It is understood that they can be utilized to probe the whereabouts of the critical point on the phase diagram of the QCD matter. However, a significant portion of these fluctuations is, apart from that related to the QCD phase transition, attributed to the other origins, which we refer to as "noncritical" ones. The present study is dedicated to the noncritical aspects of the multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. In particular, we focus on those of dynamical origin, such as the hydrodynamic expansion of the system and the event-by-event initial fluctuations, in addition to the usual thermal fluctuations, finite volume corrections, and resonance decay at the freeze-out surface. The obtained results are compared to those of the hadronic resonance gas model as well as to the experimental data.

Instability and phase transitions of a rotating black hole in the presence of perfect fluid dark matter

In this paper, we study the thermodynamic features of a rotating black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We analyze the critical behavior of the black hole by considering the known relationship between pressure and cosmological constant. We show that the black hole admits a first order phase transition and, both rotation and perfect fluid dark matter parameters have a significant impact on the critical quantities. We also introduce a new ad hoc pressure related to the perfect fluid dark matter and find a first order van der Waals like phase transition. In addition, using the sixth order WKB method, we investigate the massless scalar quasinormal modes (QNMs) for the static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by dark matter. Using the finite difference scheme, the dynamical evolution of the QNMs is also discussed for different values of angular momentum and overtone parameters.

No static regular black holes in Einstein-complex-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this brief report, we investigate the existence of 4-dimensional static spherically symmetric black holes (BHs) in the Einstein-complex-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (EcsGB) gravity with an arbitrary potential $V(ϕ)$ and a coupling $f(ϕ)$ between the scalar field $ϕ$ and the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term. We find that static regular BH solutions with complex scalar hairs do not exist. This conclusion does not depend on the coupling between the GB term and the scalar field, nor on the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ and the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$ (which can be either positive or negative), as longer as the scalar field remains complex and is regular across the horizon.

On nonlinearity in hydrodynamic response to the initial geometry in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

In the context of event-by-event hydrodynamic description, we analyze the implications of two models characterized by distinct initial conditions. The initial energy density of the first model adopts a Gaussian-type distribution, while those of the second one are features by high energy peripheral tubes. We calibrate the initial conditions of both models so that their initial probability distribution of eccentricity are mostly identical. Subsequently, the resultant scaled probability distributions of collective flow and the correlations between flow harmonic and eccentricity coefficients are investigated. Besides, the calculations are carried out for particle correlations regarding the symmetric cumulant, mixed harmonics, and nonlinear response coefficients. Although the resultant two-particle correlations possess similar shapes, numerical calculations indicate a subtle difference between the two models. To be specific, the difference resides in more detailed observables such as the probability distributions of elliptic flow as well as Pearson correlation coefficient regarding higher-order harmonics. We discuss several essential aspects concerning the linearity and nonlinearity between initial eccentricities and final state anisotropies. Further implications are addressed.

Spherically symmetric static black holes in Einstein-aether theory

In this paper, we systematically study spherically symmetric static spacetimes in the framework of Einstein-aether theory, and pay particular attention to the existence of black holes (BHs). In the present studies we first clarify several subtle issues. In particular, we find that, out of the five non-trivial field equations, only three are independent, so the problem is well-posed, as now generically there are only three unknown functions, {$F(r), B(r), A(r)$, where $F$ and $B$ are metric coefficients, and $A$ describes the aether field.} In addition, the two second-order differential equations for $A$ and $F$ are independent of $B$, and once they are found, $B$ is given simply by an algebraic expression of $F,\; A$ and their derivatives. To simplify the problem further, we explore the symmetry of field redefinitions, and work first with the redefined metric and aether field, and then obtain the physical ones by the inverse transformations. These clarifications significantly simplify the computational labor, which is important, as the problem is highly involved mathematically. In fact, it is exactly because of these, we find various numerical BH solutions with an accuracy that is at least two orders higher than previous ones. More important, these BH solutions are the only ones that satisfy the self-consistent conditions and meantime are consistent with all the observational constraints obtained so far. The locations of universal horizons are also identified, together with several other observationally interesting quantities, such as the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO), the ISCO frequency, and the maximum redshift $z_{max}$ of a photon emitted by a source orbiting the ISCO. All of these quantities are found to be quite close to their relativistic limits.

Tail wavelets in the merger of binary compact objects

We present a model for tail wavelets, a phenomenon also known as "echo" in the literature. The tail wavelet may appear in signal reconnaissances in the merger of binary compact objects, including black holes and neutron stars. We show that the dark matter surrounding the compact objects lead to the speculated tail wavelet following the main gravitational wave (GW). We demonstrate that the radiation pressure of the main wave is fully capable of pushing away the the surrounding matter to some altitude, and splashing down of the matter excites the tail wavelet after ring down of the main wave. We illustrate this idea in a simplified model, where numerical estimations are carried out concerning the specific distribution of the dark matter outside the black hole horizon and the threshold values in accordance with observations. We study the full back reaction of the surrounding dark matter to the metric, and find that the effect is insignificant to the tail wavelets. We find the fine difference between the tail wavelets of a dressed black hole and a bare one. We demonstrate that the tail wavelet can be a natural phenomenon in frame of general relativity, without invoking any modified gravities or quantum effects.

On the boundary condition and related instability in the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

In this work, we explore various relevant aspects of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics regarding Burger's equation. The stability, precision, and efficiency of the algorithm are investigated in terms of different implementations. In particular, we argue that the boundary condition plays an essential role in the stability of numerical implementation. Besides, the issue is shown to be closely associated with the initial particle distribution and the interpolation scheme. Among others, we introduce an interpolation scheme termed symmetrized finite particle method. The main advantage of the scheme is that its implementation does not involve any derivative of the kernel function. Concerning the equation of motion, the calculations are carried out using two distinct scenarios where the particles are chosen to be either stationary or dynamically evolved. The obtained results are compared with those obtained by using the standard finite difference method for spatial derivatives. Our numerical results indicate subtle differences between different schemes regarding the choice of boundary condition. In particular, a novel type of instability is observed where the regular distribution is compromised as the particles start to traverse each other. Implications and further discussions of the present study are also addressed.

(Anti-) de Sitter Electrically Charged Black Hole Solutions in Higher-Derivative Gravity

In this paper, static electrically charged black hole solutions with cosmological constant are investigated in an Einstein-Hilbert theory of gravity with additional quadratic curvature terms. Beside the analytic Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter solutions, non-Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter solutions are also obtained numerically by employing the shooting method. The results show that there exist two groups of asymptotically (Anti-) de Sitter spacetimes for both charged and uncharged black holes. In particular, it was found that for uncharged black holes the first group can be reduced to the Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter solution, while the second group is intrinsically different from a Schwarzschild (Anti-) de Sitter solution even when the charge and the cosmological constant become zero.

A mesoscopic approach on stability and phase transition between different traffic flow states

It is understood that congestion in traffic can be interpreted in terms of the instability of the equation of dynamic motion. The evolution of a traffic system from an unstable or metastable state to a globally stable state bears a strong resemblance to the phase transition in thermodynamics. In this work, we explore the underlying physics of the traffic system, by examining closely the physical properties and mathematical constraints of the phase transitions therein. By using a mesoscopic approach, one entitles the catastrophe model the same physical content as in the Landau's theory, and uncovers its close connections to the instability of the equation of motion and to the transition between different traffic states. In addition to the one-dimensional configuration space, we generalize our discussions to the higher-dimensional case, where the observed temporal oscillation in traffic flow data is attributed to the curl of a vector field. We exhibit that our model can reproduce the main features of the observed fundamental diagram including the inverse-$λ$ shape and the wide scattering of congested traffic data. When properly parameterized, the main feature of the data can be reproduced reasonably well either in terms of the oscillating congested traffic or in terms of the synchronized flow.

A non grid-based interpolation scheme for the eigenvalue problem

We propose a non grid-based interpolation scheme based on the information from the data collected from the vicinity of the query point. As a non-grid-based interpolation, the data points can be distributed randomly in a small region, and the interpolation is constructed so that it naturally makes use of the information not only on the function value but also on its higher order derivatives. The main advantage of the present approach is that the precision of the interpolation can be adjusted in accordance to the quantity of the data, in other words, a balance between the precision and the computational cost can be achieved by properly choosing the size of the neighborhood where the data points are collected. The method is applicable to univariate as well as multivariate functions. We show that the proposed scheme is efficient and precise. The present approach is then employed to study the eigenvalue problem.

Fermions Tunneling from Higher-Dimensional Reissner-Nordström Black Hole: Semiclassical and Beyond Semiclassical Approximation

Based on semiclassical tunneling method, we focus on charged fermions tunneling from higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole. We first simplify the Dirac equation by semiclassical approximation, and then a semiclassical Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained. Using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, we study the Hawking temperature and fermions tunneling rate at the event horizon of the higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. Finally, the correct entropy is calculation by the method beyond semiclassical approximation.

Resonance of Gaussian electromagnetic field to the high frequency gravitational waves

We consider a Gaussian Beam (GB) resonant system for high frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) detection. At present, we find the optimal signal strength in theory through setting the magnetic component of GB in a standard gaussian form. Under the synchro-resonance condition, we study the signal strength (i.e., transverse perturbative photon fluxes) from the relic HFGWs (predicted by ordinary inflationary model) and the braneworld HFGWs (from braneworld scenarios). Both of them would generate potentially detectable transverse perturbative photon fluxes (PPFs). Furthermore we find optimal system parameters and the relationship between frequency and effective width of energy fluxes accumulation.

Scalar Quasinormal Modes of Anti-de Sitter Static Spacetime in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity with $U(1)$ Symmetry

In this paper, we investigate the scalar quasinormal modes of Hořava-Lifshitz theory with $U(1)$ symmetry in static Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The static planar and spherical black hole solutions in lower energy limit are derived in non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The equation of motion of a scalar field is obtained, and is utilized to study the quasinormal modes of massless scalar particles. We find that the effect of Hořava-Lifshitz correction is to increase the quasinormal period as well as to slow down the decay of the oscillation magnitude. Besides, the scalar field could be unstable when the correction becomes too large.

Static and rotating universal horizons and black holes in gravitational theories with broken Lorentz invariance

In this paper, we show the existence of static and rotating universal horizons and black holes in gravitational theories with the broken Lorentz invariance. We pay particular attention on the ultraviolet regime, and show that universal horizons and black holes exist not only in low energy scales but also in the UV scales. This is realized by presenting various static and stationary exact solutions of the full theory of the projectable Hořava gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry in (2+1)-dimensions, which, by construction, is power-counting renormalizable.

High-dimensional Lifshitz-type spacetimes, universal horizons and black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

In this paper, we present all $[(d+1)+1]$-dimensional static diagonal vacuum solutions of the non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in the IR limit, and show that they give rise to very rich Lifshitz-type structures, depending on the choice of the free parameters of the solutions. These include the Lifshitz spacetimes with or without hyperscaling violation, Lifshitz solitons, and black holes. Remarkably, even the theory breaks explicitly the Lorentz symmetry and allows generically instantaneous propagations, universal horizons still exist, which serve as one-way membranes for signals with any large velocities. In particular, particles even with infinitely large velocities would just move around on these boundaries and cannot escape to infinity. Another remarkable feature appearing in the Lifshitz-type spacetimes is that the dynamical exponent $z$ can take its values only in the ranges $1 \le z < 2$ for $d \ge 3$ and $1 \le z <\infty$ for $d = 2$, due to the stability and ghost-free conditions of the theory.

New look at black holes: Existence of universal horizons

In this paper, we study the existence of universal horizons in a given static spacetime, and find that the test khronon field can be solved explicitly when its velocity becomes infinitely large, at which point the universal horizon coincides with the sound horizon of the khronon. Choosing the timelike coordinate aligned with the khronon, the static metric takes a simple form, from which it can be seen clearly that the metric is free of singularity at the Killing horizon, but becomes singular at the universal horizon. Applying such developed formulas to three well-known black hole solutions, the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter, and Reissner-Nordström, we find that in all these solutions universal horizons exist and are always inside the Killing horizons. In particular, in the Eddington-Finkelstein and Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates, in which the metrics are not singular when crossing both of the Killing and universal horizons, the peeling-off behavior of the khronon is found only at the universal horizons, whereby we show that the values of surface gravity of the universal horizons calculated from the peeling-off behavior of the khronon match with those obtained from the covariant definition given recently by Cropp, Liberati, Mohd and Visser.

Nonlinear Electromagnetic Quasinormal Modes and Hawking Radiation of A Regular Black Hole with Magnetic Charge

Based on a regular exact black hole (BH) from nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) coupled to General Relativity, we investigate its stability of such BH through the Quasinormal Modes (QNMs) of electromagnetic (EM) field perturbation and its thermodynamics through Hawking radiation. In perturbation theory, we can deduce the effective potential from nonlinear EM field. The comparison of potential function between regular and RN BHs could predict their similar QNMs. The QNMs frequencies tell us the effect of magnetic charge $q$, overtone $n$, angular momentum number $l$ on the dynamic evolution of NLED EM field. Furthermore we also discuss the cases near extreme condition of such magnetically charged regular BH. The corresponding QNMs spectrum illuminates some special properties in the near-extreme cases. For the thermodynamics, we employ Hamilton-Jacobi method to calculate the near-horizon Hawking temperature of the regular BH and reveal the relationship between classical parameters of black hole and its quantum effect.

Regular Phantom Black Hole and Holography: very high temperature superconductors

Holographic superconductors containing a non-minimal derivative coupling for scalar field in a regular phantom plane symmetric black hole have been considered. We show that the parameter of the regular black hole $b$ as well as the non-minimal derivative coupling parameter $η$ affect the formation of the condensate as well as the conductivity in the superconductor. Moreover, $b$ has a critical value in which the critical temperature $T_c$ increases without a bound. We argue that an unlimited critical temperature is an evidence that high $T_c$ superconductor must be related to the absence of a singularity in the bulk in the AdS/CFT context.

Lifshitz spacetimes, solitons, and generalized BTZ black holes in quantum gravity at a Lifshitz point

In this paper, we study static vacuum solutions of quantum gravity at a fixed Lifshitz point in (2+1) dimensions, and present all the diagonal solutions in closed forms in the infrared limit. The exact solutions represent spacetimes with very rich structures: they can represent generalized BTZ black holes, Lifshitz space-times or Lifshitz solitons, in which the spacetimes are free of any kind of space-time singularities, depending on the choices of the free parameters of the solutions. We also find several classes of exact static non-diagonal solutions, which represent similar space-time structures as those given in the diagonal case. The relevance of these solutions to the non-relativistic Lifshitz-type gauge/gravity duality is discussed.

Lorentz Invariance Violation and Modified Hawking Fermions Tunneling from Black Strings

Recently the modified Dirac equation with Lorentz invariance violation has been proposed, which would be helpful to resolve some issues in quantum gravity theory and high energy physics. In this paper, the modified Dirac equation has been generalized in curved spacetime, and then fermion tunneling of black strings is researched under this correctional Dirac field theory. We also use semi-classical approximation method to get correctional Hamilton-Jacobi equation, so that the correctional Hawking temperature and correctional black hole's entropy are derived.

Post-Newtonian approximations in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with extra U(1) symmetry

In this paper, we first propose a universal coupling between the gravity and matter in the framework of the Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry for both the projectable and non-projectable cases. Then, using this universal coupling we study the post-Newtonian approximations and obtain the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters in terms of the coupling constants of the theory. Contrary to the previous works in which only two PPN parameters were calculated, we obtain {\it all} PPN parameters. We then, for the first time in either projectable or non-projectable case, find that all the solar system tests carried out so far are satisfied in a large region of the parameters space. In particular, the same results obtained in general relativity can be easily realized here. A remarkable feature is that the solar system tests impose no constraint on the parameter $λ$ appearing in the kinetic part of the action. As a result, the solar system tests, when combined with the condition for avoidance of strong coupling, do not lead to an upper bound on the energy scale $M_{*}$ that suppresses higher dimensional operators in the theory. This is in sharp contrast to other versions of the HL theory.

Universal horizons and black holes in gravitational theories with broken Lorentz symmetry

In this paper, we first show that the definition of the universal horizons studied recently in the khrononmetric theory of gravity can be straightforwardly generalized to other theories that violate the Lorentz symmetry, by simply considering the khronon as a probe field and playing the same role as a Killing vector field. As an application, we study static charged ($D+1$)-dimensional spacetimes in the framework of the healthy (non-projectable) Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity in the infrared limit, and find various solutions. Some of them represent Lifshitz space-times with hyperscaling violations, and some have black hole structures. In the latter universal horizons always exist inside the Killing horizons. The surface gravity on them can be either larger or smaller than the surface gravity on the Killing horizons, depending on the space-times considered. Although such black holes are found only in the infrared, we argue that black holes with universal horizons also exist in the full theory of the HL gravity. A simple example is the Schwarzschild solution written in the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates, which is also a solution of the full theory of the HL gravity and has a universal horizon located inside the Schwarzschild Killing horizon.

Dirac quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric regular black holes

Using the WKB approximation, massless and massive Dirac quasinormal modes (QNMs) are studied in spherically symmetric regular spacetimes. We analyze the relationships between QNM frequencies and the parameters (angular momentum number $l$, magnetic monopole charge $β$ and the mass of the field $m$), and discuss the extreme charge of magnetic monopole $β_{e}$ for spherically symmetric regular black holes (BHs). Furthermore, we apply an expansion method to expand QNMs in inverse powers of $L=l+1/2$, and confirm good precision with $l>n$. Finally, we improve traditional finite difference method to be available in massive Dirac case, and illuminate the dynamical evolution of massive Dirac field.

Solar system tests and interpretation of gauge field and Newtonian prepotential in general covariant Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

We study spherically symmetric, stationary vacuum configurations in general covariant theory (U(1) extension) of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the projectability condition and an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, and obtain all the solutions in closed forms. If the gauge field $A$ and the Newtonian prepotential $φ$ do not directly couple to matter fields, the theory is inconsistent with solar system tests for $λ\not=1$, no matter how small $|λ-1|$ is. This is shown to be true also with the most general ansatz of spherical (but not necessarily stationary) configurations. Therefore, to be consistent with observations, one needs either to find a mechanism to restrict $λ$ precisely to $λ_{GR}=1$, or to consider $A$ and/or $φ$ as parts of the 4-dimensional metric on which matter fields propagate. In the latter, requiring that the line element be invariant not only under the foliation-preserving diffeomorphism but also under the local U(1) transformations, we propose the replacements, $N \rightarrow N - \upsilon(A - {\cal{A}})/c^2$ and $N^i \rightarrow N^i+N\nabla^{i}φ$, where $\upsilon$ is a dimensionless coupling constant to be constrained by observations, $N$ and $N^i$ are, respectively, the lapse function and shift vector, and ${\cal{A}} \equiv - \dotφ + N^i\nabla_{i}φ+ N(\nabla_{i}φ)^2/2$. With this prescription, we show explicitly that the aforementioned solutions are consistent with solar system tests for both $λ=1$ and $λ\not=1$, provided that $|\upsilon-1|<10^{-5}$. From this result, the physical and geometrical interpretations of the fields $A$ and $φ$ become clear. However, it still remains to be understood how to obtain such a prescription from the action principle.

Static post-Newtonian limits in non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry

In this paper, we study static post-Newtonian limits in non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry. After obtaining all static spherical solutions in the infrared, we apply them to the solar system tests, and obtain the Eddington-Robertson-Schiff parameters in terms of the coupling constants of the theory. These parameters are well consistent with observations for the physically viable coupling constants. In contrast to the projectable case, this consistence is achieved without taking the gauge field and Newtonian prepotential as part of the metric.

Static electromagnetic fields and charged black holes in general covariant theory of Horava-Lifshitz gravity

In this paper, we study electromeganetic static spacetimes in the nonrelativisitc general covariant theory of the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, proposed recently by Horava and Melby-Thompson, and present all the electric static solutions, which represent the generalization of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution found in Einstein's general relativity (GR). The global/local structures of spacetimes in the HL theory in general are different from those given in GR, because the dispersion relations of test particles now contain high-order momentum terms, so the speeds of these particles are unbounded in the ultraviolet (UV). As a result, the conception of light-cones defined in GR becomes invalid and test particles do not follow geodesics. To study black holes in the HL theory, we adopt the geometrical optical approximations, and define a horizon as a (two-closed) surface that is free of spacetime singularities and on which massless test particles are infinitely redshifted. With such a definition, we show that some of our solutions give rise to (charged) black holes, although the radii of their horizons in general depend on the energies of the test particles.

Detailed balance condition and ultraviolet stability of scalar field in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

Detailed balance and projectability conditions are two main assumptions when Horava recently formulated his theory of quantum gravity - the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. While the latter represents an important ingredient, the former often believed needs to be abandoned, in order to obtain an ultraviolet stable scalar field, among other things. In this paper, because of several attractive features of this condition, we revisit it, and show that the scalar field can be stabilized, if the detailed balance condition is allowed to be softly broken. Although this is done explicitly in the non-relativistic general covariant setup of Horava-Melby-Thompson with an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, generalized lately by da Silva, it is also true in other versions of the HL theory. With the detailed balance condition softly breaking, the number of independent coupling constants can be still significantly reduced. It is remarkable to note that, unlike other setups, in this da Silva generalization, there exists a master equation for the linear perturbations of the scalar field in the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background.

On strong coupling in nonrelativistic general covariant theory of gravity

We study the strong coupling problem in the Horava-Melby-Thompson setup of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity with an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, generalized recently by da Silva, where $λ$ describes the deviation of the theory in the infrared from general relativity that has $λ_{GR} = 1$. We find that a scalar field in the Minkowski background becomes strong coupling for processes with energy higher than $Λ_ω [\equiv (M_{pl}/c_1)^{3/2} M_{pl}|λ- 1|^{5/4}]$, where generically $c_1 \ll M_{pl}$. However, this problem can be cured by introducing a new energy scale $M_{*}$, so that $M_{*} < Λ_ω$, where $M_{*}$ denotes the suppression energy of high order derivative terms of the theory.
