The Eigenvalue Spectrum of the Inertia Operator

We view the inertia construction of algebraic stacks as an operator on the Grothendieck groups of various categories of algebraic stacks. We show that the inertia operator is locally finite and diagonalizable. This is proved for the Grothendieck group of Deligne-Mumford stacks over a base scheme and the category of quasi-split Artin stacks defined over a field of characteristic zero. Motivated by the quasi-splitness condition, in [2] we consider the inertia operator of the Hall algebra of algebroids, and applications of it in generalized Donaldson-Thomas theory.

Moduli of non-commutative polarized schemes

We construct, using geometric invariant theory, a quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford stack of stable graded algebras. We also construct a derived enhancement, which classifies twisted bundles of stable graded A-infinity-algebras. The tangent complex of the derived scheme is given by graded Hochschild cohomology, which we relate to ordinary Hochschild cohomology. We obtain a version of Hilbert stability for non-commutative projective schemes.

String topology for stacks

We establish the general machinery of string topology for differentiable stacks. This machinery allows us to treat on an equal footing free loops in stacks and hidden loops. In particular, we give a good notion of a free loop stack, and of a mapping stack $\map(Y,\XX)$, where $Y$ is a compact space and $\XX$ a topological stack, which is functorial both in $\XX$ and $Y$ and behaves well enough with respect to pushouts. We also construct a bivariant (in the sense of Fulton and MacPherson) theory for topological stacks: it gives us a flexible theory of Gysin maps which are automatically compatible with pullback, pushforward and products. Further we prove an excess formula in this context. We introduce oriented stacks, generalizing oriented manifolds, which are stacks on which we can do string topology. We prove that the homology of the free loop stack of an oriented stack and the homology of hidden loops (sometimes called ghost loops) are a Frobenius algebra which are related by a natural morphism of Frobenius algebras. We also prove that the homology of free loop stack has a natural structure of a BV-algebra, which together with the Frobenius structure fits into an homological conformal field theories with closed positive boundaries. Using our general machinery, we construct an intersection pairing for (non necessarily compact) almost complex orbifolds which is in the same relation to the intersection pairing for manifolds as Chen-Ruan orbifold cup-product is to ordinary cup-product of manifolds. We show that the hidden loop product of almost complex is isomorphic to the orbifold intersection pairing twisted by a canonical class. Finally we gave some examples including the case of the classifying stacks $[*/G]$ of a compact Lie group.

Motivic degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants

Given a smooth complex threefold X, we define the virtual motive of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case when X is Calabi-Yau, this gives a motivic refinement of the n-point degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariant of X. The key example is affine three-space, where the Hilbert scheme can be expressed as the critical locus of a regular function on a smooth variety, and its virtual motive is defined in terms of the Denef-Loeser motivic nearby fiber. A crucial technical result asserts that if a function is equivariant with respect to a suitable torus action, its motivic nearby fiber is simply given by the motivic class of a general fiber. This allows us to compute the generating function of the virtual motives of the Hilbert schemes of affine three-space via a direct computation involving the motivic class of the commuting variety. We then give a formula for the generating function for arbitrary X as a motivic exponential, generalizing known results in lower dimensions. The weight polynomial specialization leads to a product formula in terms of deformed MacMahon functions, analogous to Gottsche's formula for the Poincare polynomials of the Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces.

On the cohomology of stable map spaces

We describe an approach to calculating the cohomology rings of stable map spaces. The method we use is due to Akildiz-Carrell and employs a C^*-action and a vector field which is equivariant with respect to this C^*-action. We give an explicit description of the big Bialynicky-Birula cell of the C^*-action on Mbar_00(P^n,d) as a vector bundle on Mbar_0d. This is used to calculate explicitly the cohomology ring of Mbar_00(P^n,d) in the cases d=2 and d=3. Of particular interest is the case as n approaches infinity.
