Notes on factorization algebras, factorization homology and applications

These notes are an expanded version of two series of lectures given at the winter school in mathematical physics at les Houches and at the Vietnamese Institute for Mathematical Sciences. They are an introduction to factorization algebras, factorization homology and some of their applications, notably for studying $E_n$-algebras. We give an account of homology theory for manifolds (and spaces), which give invariant of manifolds but also invariant of $E_n$-algebras. We particularly emphasize the point of view of factorization algebras (a structure originating from quantum field theory) which plays, with respect to homology theory for manifolds, the role of sheaves with respect to singular cohomology. We mention some applications to the study of mapping spaces and study several examples, including some over stratified spaces.

Helly numbers of acyclic families

The Helly number of a family of sets with empty intersection is the size of its largest inclusion-wise minimal sub-family with empty intersection. Let F be a finite family of open subsets of an arbitrary locally arc-wise connected topological space Gamma. Assume that for every sub-family G of F the intersection of the elements of G has at most r connected components, each of which is a Q-homology cell. We show that the Helly number of F is at most r(d_Gamma+1), where d_Gamma is the smallest integer j such that every open set of Gamma has trivial Q-homology in dimension j and higher. (In particular d_{R^d} = d). This bound is best possible. We prove, in fact, a stronger theorem where small sub-families may have more than r connected components, each possibly with nontrivial homology in low dimension. As an application, we obtain several explicit bounds on Helly numbers in geometric transversal theory for which only ad hoc geometric proofs were previously known; in certain cases, the bound we obtain is better than what was previously known.

String topology for stacks

We establish the general machinery of string topology for differentiable stacks. This machinery allows us to treat on an equal footing free loops in stacks and hidden loops. In particular, we give a good notion of a free loop stack, and of a mapping stack $\map(Y,\XX)$, where $Y$ is a compact space and $\XX$ a topological stack, which is functorial both in $\XX$ and $Y$ and behaves well enough with respect to pushouts. We also construct a bivariant (in the sense of Fulton and MacPherson) theory for topological stacks: it gives us a flexible theory of Gysin maps which are automatically compatible with pullback, pushforward and products. Further we prove an excess formula in this context. We introduce oriented stacks, generalizing oriented manifolds, which are stacks on which we can do string topology. We prove that the homology of the free loop stack of an oriented stack and the homology of hidden loops (sometimes called ghost loops) are a Frobenius algebra which are related by a natural morphism of Frobenius algebras. We also prove that the homology of free loop stack has a natural structure of a BV-algebra, which together with the Frobenius structure fits into an homological conformal field theories with closed positive boundaries. Using our general machinery, we construct an intersection pairing for (non necessarily compact) almost complex orbifolds which is in the same relation to the intersection pairing for manifolds as Chen-Ruan orbifold cup-product is to ordinary cup-product of manifolds. We show that the hidden loop product of almost complex is isomorphic to the orbifold intersection pairing twisted by a canonical class. Finally we gave some examples including the case of the classifying stacks $[*/G]$ of a compact Lie group.

Lift of $C\_\infty$ and $L\_\infty$ morphisms to $G\_\infty$ morphisms

Let $\g\_2$ be the Hochschild complex of cochains on $C^\infty(\RM^n)$ and $\g\_1$ be the space of multivector fields on $\RM^n$. In this paper we prove that given any $G\_\infty$-structure ({\rm i.e.} Gerstenhaber algebra up to homotopy structure) on $\g\_2$, and any $C\_\infty$-morphism $ϕ$ ({\rm i.e.} morphism of commutative, associative algebra up to homotopy) between $\g\_1$ and $\g\_2$, there exists a $G\_\infty$-morphism $Φ$ between $\g\_1$ and $\g\_2$ that restricts to $ϕ$. We also show that any $L\_\infty$-morphism ({\rm i.e.} morphism of Lie algebra up to homotopy), in particular the one constructed by Kontsevich, can be deformed into a $G\_\infty$-morphism, using Tamarkin's method for any $G\_\infty$-structure on $\g\_2$. We also show that any two of such $G\_\infty$-morphisms are homotopic.
