Magnetic Properties and Electronic Configurations of Mn Ions in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ Studied by X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

The magnetic properties and the electronic excitations of the new diluted magnetic semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ have been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn $L_{2,3}$ edge. The sum rule analysis of the XMCD spectra yields the net spin moment of $0.45μ_{\text{B}}$/Mn and the small orbital moment of $0.05μ_{\text{B}}$/Mn. This indicates that the Mn atoms are in the high-spin configurations of $d^{5}$, whereas the presence of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn ions reduces the net spin moment. RIXS spectra show broad peaks from 1 to 6 eV energy loss, which originate from the $d$-$d$ crystal field excitations of the Mn ions. Based on a comparison of the RIXS line shapes with those of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, we conclude that the ground state of Mn in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ consists not only of the charge-transferred $3d^{5}\underline{L}$ electron configuration ($\underline{L}$: ligand hole) with weakly bound holes as in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As, but also of the pure $3d^{5}$ configuration with free holes.

An efficient cellular flow model for cohesive particle flocculation in turbulence

We propose a one-way coupled model that tracks individual primary particles in a conceptually simple cellular flow setup to predict flocculation in turbulence. This computationally efficient model accounts for Stokes drag, lubrication, cohesive and direct contact forces on the primary spherical particles and allows for a systematic simulation campaign that yields the transient mean floc size as a function of the governing dimensionless parameters. The simulations reproduce the growth of the cohesive flocs with time, and the emergence of a log-normal equilibrium distribution governed by the balance of aggregation and breakage. Flocculation proceeds most rapidly when the Stokes number of the primary particles is \textit{O}(1). Results from this simple computational model are consistent with experimental observations, thus allowing us to propose a new analytical flocculation model that yields improved agreement with experimental data, especially during the transient stages.

Epitaxial growth and orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect of noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films

We report the growth of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films and the orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of (001) and (111) films due to nonzero Berry curvature. We found that post-annealing at 500$^\circ$C can significantly improve the AHE signals, though using the appropriate post-annealing conditions is important. The AHE and magnetization loops show sharp flipping at the coercive field in (111) films, while (001) films are hard to saturate by a magnetic field. The anomalous Hall conductivity of (111) films is an order of magnitude larger than that of (001) films. The present results provide not only a better understanding of the AHE in Mn$_3X$N systems but also further opportunities to study the unique phenomena related to noncollinear AFM.

Evidence for Defect-induced Superconductivity up to 49 K in (Ca1-xRx)Fe2As2

To explore the origin of the unusual non-bulk superconductivity with a Tc up to 49 K reported in the rare-earth-doped CaFe2As2 , the chemical composition, magnetization, specific heat, resistivity, and annealing effect are systematically investigated on nominal (Ca1-xRx)Fe2As2 single crystals with different x's and R = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. All display a doping-independent Tc once superconductivity is induced, a doping-dependent low field superconducting volume fraction f, and a large magnetic anisotropy η in the superconducting state, suggesting a rather inhomogeneous superconducting state in an otherwise microscale-homogenous superconductor. The wavelength dispersive spectroscopy and specific heat show the presence of defects which are closely related to f, regardless of the R involved. The magnetism further reveals that the defects are mainly superparamagnetic clusters for R = Ce, Pr, and Nd with strong intercluster interactions, implying that defects are locally self-organized. Annealing at 500 °C, without varying the doping level x, suppresses f profoundly but not the Tc. The above observations provide evidence for the crucial role of defects in the occurrence of the unusually high Tc ~ 49 K in (Ca1-xRx)Fe2As2 and are consistent with the interface-enhanced superconductivity recently proposed.

Fermi Surfaces and $p$-$d$ Hybridization in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ Studied by Soft X-ray Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The electronic structure of the new diluted magnetic semiconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0.30$, $y=0.15$) in single crystal form has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). %High density of states of nondispersive bands composed of the Zn $3d$ orbitals are observed with ultraviolet incident light. Measurements with soft x-rays clarify the host valence-band electronic structure primarily composed of the As $4p$ states. Two hole pockets around the $Γ$ point, a hole corrugated cylinder surrounding the $Γ$ and Z points, and an electron pocket around the Z point are observed, and explain the metallic transport of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. This is contrasted with Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As (GaMnAs), where it is located above the As $4p$ valence-band maximum (VBM) and no Fermi surfaces have been clearly identified. Resonance soft x-ray ARPES measurements reveal a nondispersive (Kondo resonance-like) Mn $3d$ impurity band near the Fermi level, as in the case of GaMnAs. However, the impurity band is located well below the VBM, unlike the impurity band in GaMnAs, which is located around and above the VBM. We conclude that, while the strong hybridization between the Mn $3d$ and the As $4p$ orbitals plays an important role in creating the impurity band and inducing high temperature ferromagnetism in both systems, the metallic transport may predominantly occur in the host valence band in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and in the impurity band in GaMnAs.

Photoemission and X-ray Absorption Studies of the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ba$_{1-y}$K$_{y}$(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ Isostructural to Fe-based Superconductors

The electronic and magnetic properties of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which is isostructural to so-called 122-type Fe-based superconductors, are investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonance photoemission spectroscopy (RPES). Mn $L_{2,3}$-edge XAS indicates that the doped Mn atoms have the valence 2+ and strongly hybridize with the $4p$ orbitals of the tetrahedrally coordinating As ligands. The Mn $3d$ partial density of states (PDOS) obtained by RPES shows a peak around 4 eV and relatively high between 0-2 eV below the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) with little contribution at $E_{F}$, similar to that of the archetypal DMS Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As. This energy level creates $d^{5}$ electron configuration with $S=5/2$ local magnetic moments at the Mn atoms. Hole carriers induced by K substitution for Ba atoms go into the top of the As $4p$ valence band and are weakly bound to the Mn local spins. The ferromagnetic correlation between the local spins mediated by the hole carriers induces ferromagnetism in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

(Ca,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2: a new spin & charge doping decoupled diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with hexagonal CaAl2Si2 structure

Here we report the successful synthesis of a spin- & charge-decoupled diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ca,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2, crystallizing into the hexagonal CaAl2Si2 structure. The compound shows a ferromagnetic transition with a Curie temperature up to 33 K with 10% Na doping, which gives rise to carrier density of np~10^20 cm^-3. The new DMS is a soft magnetic material with HC<400 Oe. The anomalous Hall effect is observed below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature. With increasing Mn doping, ferromagnetic order is accompanied by an interaction between the local spin and mobile charge, giving rise to a minimum in resistivity at low temperatures and localizing the conduction electrons. The system provides an ideal platform for studying the interaction of the local spins and conduction electrons.

(Sr,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2: A new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with the hexagonal CaAl2Si2 type structure

A new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (Sr,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2 is reported, in which charge and spin doping are decoupled via Sr/Na and Zn/Mn substitutions, respectively, being distinguished from classic (Ga,Mn)As where charge & spin doping are simultaneously integrated. Different from the recently reported ferromagnetic (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2, this material crystallizes into the hexagonal CaAl2Si2-type structure. Ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature up to 20 K has been observed from magnetization. The muon spin relaxation measurements suggest that the exchange interaction between Mn moments of this new system could be different to the earlier DMS systems. This system provides an important means for studying ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

Observation of strong-coupling pairing with weakened Fermi-surface nesting at optimal hole doping in Ca$_{0.33}$Na$_{0.67}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We report an angle-resolved photoemission investigation of optimally-doped Ca$_{0.33}$Na$_{0.67}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The Fermi surface topology of this compound is similar to that of the well-studied Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ material, except for larger hole pockets resulting from a higher hole concentration per Fe atoms. We find that the quasi-nesting conditions are weakened in this compound as compared to Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. As with Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ though, we observe nearly isotropic superconducting gaps with Fermi surface-dependent magnitudes. A small variation in the gap size along the momentum direction perpendicular to the surface is found for one of the Fermi surfaces. Our superconducting gap results on all Fermi surface sheets fit simultaneously very well to a global gap function derived from a strong coupling approach, which contains only 2 global parameters.

Specific Heat of Ca0.33Na0.67Fe2As2

The specific heat of single crystal hole-doped Ca0.33Na0.67Fe2As2, Tc(onset)=33.7 K, was measured from 0.4 to 40 K. The discontinuity in the specific heat at Tc, deltaC, divided by Tc is 105 +- 5 mJ/molK2, consistent with values found previously for hole-doped Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 and somewhat above the general trend for deltaC/Tc vs Tc for the iron based superconductors established by Bud'ko, Ni and Canfield. The usefulness of measured valued of deltaC/Tc as an important metric for the quality of samples is discussed.

Influence of substitution on the optical properties of functionalized pentacene monomers and crystals: Experiment and theory

The influence of solubilizing substitutional groups on the electronic and optical properties of functionalized pentacene molecules and crystals have been investigated. Density functional theory is used to calculate the electronic and optical properties of pentacene, TIBS-CF$_{3}$-pentacene, and TIPS-pentacene. The results are compared with experimental absorption spectra of solutions and the complex dielectric function of thin films in the 1 eV to 3 eV energy range. In all cases, the band gaps of the isolated molecules are found to be smaller than those of the crystals. The absorption spectra and dielectric function are interpreted in terms of the transitions between the highest occupied molecular orbitals and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. The bands associated to C and Si atoms connecting the functional side group to the pentacene in the (6,13) positions are found to be the main contributors to the optical transitions. The calculated dielectric functions of thin films agree with the experimental results. A redshift is observed in crystals as compared to molecules in experiment and theory both, where the amplitude depends on the packing structure.

New Diluted Ferromagnetic Semiconductor isostructural to 122 type iron pnictide superconductor with TC up to 180 K

Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) have received much attention due to its potential applications to spintronics devices. A prototypical system (Ga,Mn)As has been widely studied since 1990s. The simultaneous spin and charge doping via hetero-valence (Ga3+,Mn2+) substitution, however, resulted in severely limited solubility without availability of bulk specimens. Previously we synthesized a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor of bulk Li(Zn,Mn)As with Tc up to 50K, where isovalent (Zn,Mn) spin doping was separated from charge control via Li concentrations. Here we report the synthesis of a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba1-xKx)(Zn1-yMny)2As2, isostructural to iron 122 system, where holes are doped via (Ba2+, K1+), while spins via (Zn2+,Mn2+) substitutions. Bulk samples with x=0.1-0.3 and y=0.05-0.15 exhibit ferromagnetic order with TC up to 180K, comparable to that of record high Tc for Ga(MnAs), significantly enhanced than Li(Zn,Mn)As. Moreover the (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 shares the same 122 crystal structure with semiconducting BaZn2As2, antiferromagnetic BaMn2As2, and superconducting (Ba,K)Fe2As2, which makes them promising to the development of multilayer functional devices.

New Diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Li(Zn,Mn)P with decoupled charge and spin doping

We report the discovery of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor, Li(Zn,Mn)P, in which charge and spin are introduced independently via lithium off-stoichiometry and the isovalent substitution of Mn2+ for Zn2+, respectively. Isostructural to (Ga,Mn)As, Li(Zn,Mn)P was found to be a p-type ferromagnetic semiconductor with excess Lithium providing charge doping. First principles calculations indicate that excess Li is favored to partially occupy the Zn site, leading to hole doping. Ferromagnetism is mediated in semiconducting samples of relative low mobile carriers with a small coercive force, indicating an easy spin flip.

The glass transition diagram in model metallic glasses

We report a strain rate (equivalent to experimental observation time) induced glass transition in model SrCaYbMg(Li)Zn(Cu) metallic glasses at room temperature. A critical strain rate, equivalent to glass transition temperature, is found for the strain rate induced a glassy state to liquid-like viscoplastic state translation. The results show that the observation time, equivalent to temperature and stress, is a key parameter for the glass transition. A three-dimension glass transition phase diagram involved in time, temperature and stress in metallic glasses is established for understanding the nature of the metallic glasses.

Investigations of surface quality and SRF cavity performance

Magnetic field enhancement has been studied in the past through replica and cavity cutting. Considerable progress of niobium cavity manufacturing and processing has been made since then. Wide variety of single cell cavities has been analyzed through replica technique. Their RF performances were compared in corresponding to geometric RF surface quality. It is concluded that the surface roughness affects cavity performance mostly in secondary role. The other factors must have played primary role in cavity performance limitations.

The doping dependence of superconductivity of (Ca1-xNax)Fe2As2

Single crystalline CaFe2As2 and (Ca1-xNax)Fe2As2 polycrystals (0 < x < 0.66) are synthesized and characterized using structural, magnetic, electronic transport, and heat capacity measurements. These measurements show that the structural/magnetic phase transition in CaFe2As2 at 165 K is monotonically suppressed by the Na doping and that superconductivity can be realized over a wide doping region. For 0.3 < x < 0.36, the magnetic susceptibilities indicate the possible coexistence of the spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity. Superconducting phases corresponding to the Na doping level in (Ca1-xNax)Fe2As2 for nominal x = 0.36, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.66, with Tc = 17 K, 19 K, 22 K, 33 K, and 33 K, respectively, are identified. The effects of the magnetic field on the superconductivity transitions for x = 0.66 samples with high upper critical fields Hc2 \approx 103 T are studied, and a phase diagram of the SDW and superconductivity as a function of the doping level is thus presented.

An octonion algebra originating in combinatorics

C.H. Yang discovered a polynomial version of the classical Lagrange identity expressing the product of two sums of four squares as another sum of four squares. He used it to give short proofs of some important theorems on composition of delta-codes (now known as T-sequences). We investigate the possible new versions of his polynomial Lagrange identity. Our main result shows that all such identities are equivalent to each other.

Search for Charged Strange Quark Matter Produced in 11.5 A GeV/c Au + Pb Collisions

We present results of a search for strange quark matter (strangelets) in 11.5 A GeV/c Au+Pb collisions from the 1994 and 1995 runs of experiment E864 at Brookhaven's AGS. We observe no strangelet candidates and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of approximately 3x10**-8 per 10% central interaction for the production of |Z|=1 and |Z|=2 strangelets over a large mass range and with metastable lifetimes of about 50 ns or more. These results place constraints primarily on quark-gluon plasma based production models for strangelets.
