Beat note stabilization of mode-locked lasers for quantum information processing

We stabilize a chosen radiofrequency beat note between two optical fields derived from the same mode-locked laser pulse train, in order to coherently manipulate quantum information. This scheme does not require access or active stabilization of the laser repetition rate. We implement and characterize this external lock, in the context of two-photon stimulated Raman transitions between the hyperfine ground states of trapped 171-Yb+ quantum bits.

Coherent Error Suppression in Multi-Qubit Entangling Gates

We demonstrate a simple pulse shaping technique designed to improve the fidelity of spin-dependent force operations commonly used to implement entangling gates in trapped-ion systems. This extension of the Mølmer-Sørensen gate can theoretically suppress the effects of certain frequency and timing errors to any desired order and is demonstrated through Walsh modulation of a two-qubit entangling gate on trapped atomic ions. The technique is applicable to any system of qubits coupled through collective harmonic oscillator modes.

Interactive Character Posing by Sparse Coding

Character posing is of interest in computer animation. It is difficult due to its dependence on inverse kinematics (IK) techniques and articulate property of human characters . To solve the IK problem, classical methods that rely on numerical solutions often suffer from the under-determination problem and can not guarantee naturalness. Existing data-driven methods address this problem by learning from motion capture data. When facing a large variety of poses however, these methods may not be able to capture the pose styles or be applicable in real-time environment. Inspired from the low-rank motion de-noising and completion model in \cite{lai2011motion}, we propose a novel model for character posing based on sparse coding. Unlike conventional approaches, our model directly captures the pose styles in Euclidean space to provide intuitive training error measurements and facilitate pose synthesis. A pose dictionary is learned in training stage and based on it natural poses are synthesized to satisfy users' constraints . We compare our model with existing models for tasks of pose de-noising and completion. Experiments show our model obtains lower de-noising and completion error. We also provide User Interface(UI) examples illustrating that our model is effective for interactive character posing.

On the Profiles and Polarization of Raman Scattered Emission Lines in Symbiotic Stars:II. Numerical Simulations

A Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the profiles and the polarization of the Raman scattered O VI lines(lambda lambda 6827,7088) in symbiotic stars. A point-like isotropic UV radiation source is assumed and a simple spherical wind model is adopted for the kinematics of the scattering material from the cool giant. We first investigate the case where the incident line photons are described by a Gaussian profile having a width of 10^4 K. We subsequently investigate the effects of the extended ionized region and non-spherical wind models including a disk-type wind and a bipolar wind. The cases where the emissin source is described by non-Gaussian profiles are briefly studied. Finally, as an additional component for the kinematics of symbiotic stars the orbital motion of the hot component around the cool giant is included and the effect on the spectropolarimetry is investigated. In this case the polarization direction changes around the red part of the Raman-scattered emission lines, when the observer's line of sight is perpendicular to the orbital plane, and no such effect is seen when the line of sight lies in the orbital plane. Furthermore, complex peak structures are seen in the degree of polarization and polarized flux, which have often been observed in several symbiotic systems including RR Tel. Brief observational consequences and preditions are discussed in relation to the present and future spectropolarimetry for symbiotic stars. It is concluded that spectropolarimetry may provide a powerful diagnostic of the physical conditions of symbiotic stars.
