Dipolar spin-waves and tunable band gap at the Dirac points in the 2D magnet ErBr3

Topological magnon insulators constitute a growing field of research for their potential use as information carriers without heat dissipation. We report an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic ground-state and excitations in the van der Waals two-dimensional honeycomb magnet ErBr3. We show that the magnetic properties of this compound are entirely governed by the dipolar interactions which generate a continuously degenerate non-collinear ground-state on the honeycomb lattice with spins confined in the plane. We find that the magnon dispersion exhibits Dirac-like cones when the magnetic moments in the ground-state are related by time-reversal and inversion symmetries associated with a Berry phase πas in single-layer graphene. A magnon band gap opens when the dipoles are rotated away from this state, entailing a finite Berry curvature in the vicinity of the K and K' Dirac points. Our results illustrate that the spin-wave dispersion of dipoles on the honeycomb lattice can be reversibly controlled from a magnetic phase with Dirac cones to a topological antiferromagnetic insulator with non-trivial valley Chern number.

Magnetic order and disorder in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with randomized exchange

We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness.

Thermal control of spin excitations in the coupled Ising-chain material RbCoCl3

We have used neutron spectroscopy to investigate the spin dynamics of the quantum (S = 1/2) antiferromagnetic Ising chains in RbCoCl3. The structure and magnetic interactions in this material conspire to produce two magnetic phase transitions at low temperatures, presenting an ideal opportunity for thermal control of the chain environment. The high-resolution spectra we measure of two-domain-wall excitations therefore characterize precisely both the continuum response of isolated chains and the "Zeeman-ladder" bound states of chains in three different effective staggered fields in one and the same material. We apply an extended Matsubara formalism to obtain a quantitative description of the entire dataset, Monte Carlo simulations to interpret the magnetic order, and finite-temperature DMRG calculations to fit the spectral features of all three phases.

Phase diagram of diluted Ising ferromagnet LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$

We present a systematic study of the phase diagram of LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ ($0.25<x<1$) Ising ferromagnets obtained from neutron scattering measurements and mean-field calculations. We show that while the thermal phase transition decreases linearly with dilution, as predicted by mean-field theory, the critical transverse field at the quantum critical point is suppressed much faster. This behavior is related to competition between off-diagonal dipolar coupling and quantum fluctuations that are tuned by doping and applied field, respectively. In this paper, we quantify the deviation of the experimental results from mean-field predictions, with the aim that this analysis can be used in future theoretical efforts towards a quantitative description.

Neutron spectroscopic study of crystal-field excitations and the effect of the crystal field on dipolar magnetism in Li$R$F$_4$ ($R$ = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb)

We present a systematic study of the crystal field interactions in the Li$R$F$_4$, $R$ = Gd, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb, family of rare-earth magnets. Using detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements we have been able to quantify the transition energies and wavefunctions for each system. This allows us to quantitatively describe the high-temperature susceptibility measurements for the series of materials and make predictions based on a mean-field approach for the low-temperature thermal and quantum phase transitions. We show that coupling between crystal field and phonon states leads to lineshape broadening in LiTmF$_4$ and level splitting in LiYbF$_4$. Furthermore, using high resolution neutron scattering from LiHoF$_4$, we find anomalous broadening of crystal-field excitations which we attribute to magnetoelastic coupling.

On the Extraction of Exchange Parameters in Transition-Metal Perovskites

The extraction of exchange parameters from measured spin-wave dispersion relations has severe limitations particularly for magnetic compounds such as the transition-metal perovskites, where the nearest-neighbor exchange parameter usually dominates the couplings between the further-distant-neighbor spins. Very precise exchange parameters beyond the nearest-neighbor spins can be obtained by neutron spectroscopic investigations of the magnetic excitation spectra of isolated multimers in magnetically diluted compounds. This is exemplified for manganese trimers in the mixed three- and two-dimensional perovskite compounds KMnxZn1-xF3 and K2MnxZn1-xF4, respectively. It is shown that the small exchange couplings between the second-nearest and the third-nearest neighboring spins can be determined unambiguously and with equal precision as the dominating nearest-neighbor exchange coupling.

Defect propagation in one-, two-, and three-dimensional compounds doped by magnetic atoms

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed to study manganese(II) dimer excitations in the diluted one-, two-, and three-dimensional compounds CsMn(x)Mg(1-x)Br(3), K(2)Mn(x)Zn(1-x)F(4), and KMn(x)Zn(1-x)F(3) (x<0.10), respectively. The transitions from the ground-state singlet to the excited triplet, split into a doublet and a singlet due to the single-ion anisotropy, exhibit remarkable fine structures. These unusual features are attributed to local structural inhomogeneities induced by the dopant Mn atoms which act like lattice defects. Statistical models support the theoretically predicted decay of atomic displacements according to 1/r**2, 1/r, and constant (for three-, two-, and one-dimensional compounds, respectively) where r denotes the distance of the displaced atoms from the defect. The observed fine structures allow a direct determination of the local exchange interactions J, and the local intradimer distances R can be derived through the linear law dJ/dR.

Non-equilibrium hysteresis and spin relaxation in the mixed-anisotropy dipolar coupled spin-glass LiHo$_{0.5}$Er$_{0.5}$F$_{4}$

We present a study of the model spin-glass LiHo$_{0.5}$Er$_{0.5}$F$_4$ using simultaneous AC susceptibility, magnetization and magnetocaloric effect measurements along with small angle neutron scattering (SANS) at sub-Kelvin temperatures. All measured bulk quantities reveal hysteretic behavior when the field is applied along the crystallographic c axis. Furthermore avalanche-like relaxation is observed in a static field after ramping from the zero-field-cooled state up to $200 - 300$ Oe. SANS measurements are employed to track the microscopic spin reconfiguration throughout both the hysteresis loop and the related relaxation. Comparing the SANS data to inhomogeneous mean-field calculations performed on a box of one million unit cells provides a real-space picture of the spin configuration. We discover that the avalanche is being driven by released Zeeman energy, which heats the sample and creates positive feedback, continuing the avalanche. The combination of SANS and mean-field simulations reveal that the conventional distribution of cluster sizes is replaced by one with a depletion of intermediate cluster sizes for much of the hysteresis loop.

Quantum and classical criticality in a dimerized quantum antiferromagnet

A quantum critical point (QCP) is a singularity in the phase diagram arising due to quantum mechanical fluctuations. The exotic properties of some of the most enigmatic physical systems, including unconventional metals and superconductors, quantum magnets, and ultracold atomic condensates, have been related to the importance of the critical quantum and thermal fluctuations near such a point. However, direct and continuous control of these fluctuations has been difficult to realize, and complete thermodynamic and spectroscopic information is required to disentangle the effects of quantum and classical physics around a QCP. Here we achieve this control in a high-pressure, high-resolution neutron scattering experiment on the quantum dimer material TlCuCl3. By measuring the magnetic excitation spectrum across the entire quantum critical phase diagram, we illustrate the similarities between quantum and thermal melting of magnetic order. We prove the critical nature of the unconventional longitudinal ("Higgs") mode of the ordered phase by damping it thermally. We demonstrate the development of two types of criticality, quantum and classical, and use their static and dynamic scaling properties to conclude that quantum and thermal fluctuations can behave largely independently near a QCP.

Phase diagram with enhanced spin-glass region of mixed Ising / XY magnets LiHo$_{x}$Er$_{1-x}$F$_{4}$

We present the experimental phase diagram of LiHo$_x$Er$_{1-x}$F$_4$, a dilution series of dipolar-coupled model magnets. The phase diagram was determined using a combination of AC susceptibility and neutron scattering. Three unique phases in addition to the Ising ferromagnet LiHoF$_4$ and the XY anti-ferromagnet LiErF$_4$ have been identified. Below $x=0.86$ an embedded spin-glass phase is observed, where a spin-glass exists within the ferromagnetic structure. Below $x=0.57$ an Ising spin-glass is observed consisting of frozen needle-like clusters. For $x \sim 0.3 - 0.1$ an antiferromagnetically coupled spin-glass occurs. A reduction of $T_C(x)$ for the ferromagnet is observed which disobeys the mean-field predictions that worked for LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$.

Spin ladders and quantum simulators for Luttinger liquids

Magnetic insulators have proven to be usable as quantum simulators for itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular the compound (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ (short (Hpip)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$) was shown to be a remarkable realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) and allowed to quantitatively test the TLL theory. Substitution weakly disorders this class of compounds and allows thus to use them to tackle questions pertaining to the effect of disorder in TLL as well, such as the formation of the Bose glass. As a first step in this direction we present in this paper a study of the properties of the related (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ compound. We determine the exchange couplings and compute the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat, using a finite temperature Density Matrix Renormalization group (DMRG) procedure. Comparison with the measured specific heat at zero magnetic field confirms the exchange parameters and Hamiltonian for the (Hpip)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ compound, giving the basis needed to start studying the disorder effects.

Direct observation of local Mn-Mn distances in the paramagnetic compound CsMnxMg1-xBr3

We introduce a novel method for local structure determination with a spatial resolution of the order of 0.01 Angstroem. It can be applied to materials containing clusters of exchange-coupled magnetic atoms. We use neutron spectroscopy to probe the energies of the cluster excitations which are determined by the interatomic coupling strength J. Since for most materials J is related to the interatomic distance R through a linear relation dJ/dR=α (for dR/R<<1), we can directly derive the local distance R from the observed excitation energies. This is exemplified for the mixed one-dimensional paramagnetic compound CsMnxMg1 xBr3 (x=0.05, 0.10) containing manganese dimers oriented along the hexagonal c-axis. Surprisingly, the resulting Mn-Mn distances R do not vary continuously with increasing internal pressure, but lock in at some discrete values.

Anisotropy of Magnetic Interactions in the Spin-Ladder Compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$

Magnetic excitations in the spin-ladder material (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ [BPCB] are probed by high-resolution multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Our experiments provide a direct evidence for a biaxial anisotropy ($\sim 5\%$ of the dominant exchange interaction), that is in contrast to a fully isotropic spin-ladder model employed for this system previously. It is argued that this anisotropy in BPCB is caused by spin-orbit coupling, which appears to be important for describing magnetic properties of this compound. The zero-field zone-center gap in the excitation spectrum of BPCB, $Δ_0/k_{B}=16.5$ K, is detected directly. Furthermore, an ESR signature of the inter-ladder exchange interactions is obtained. The detailed characterization of the anisotropy in BPCB completes the determination of the full spin hamiltonian of this exceptional spin-ladder material and shows ways to study anisotropy effects in spin ladders.

Magnetic and neutron spectroscopic properties of the tetrameric nickel compound $[Mo_{12}O_{28}(μ_2-OH)_9(μ_3-OH)_3{Ni(H_2O)_3}_4] $\cdot$ 13H_2O$

We present results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed for the compound Magnetic and neutron spectroscopic properties of the tetrameric nickel compound $[Mo_{12}O_{28}(μ_2-OH)_9(μ_3-OH)_3{Ni(H_2O)_3}_4] $\cdot$ 13H_2O$, which is a molecular magnet with antiferromagnetically coupled Ni2+ ions forming nearly ideal tetrahedra in a diamagnetic molybdate matrix. The neutron spectroscopic data are analyzed together with high-field magnetization data (taken from the literature) which exhibit four steps at non-equidistant field intervals. The experimental data can be excellently described by antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-type exchange interactions as well as an axial single-ion anisotropy within a distorted tetrahedron of Ni2+ ions characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Our analysis contrasts to recently proposed models which are based on the existence of extremely large biquadratic (and three-ion) exchange interactions and/or on a strong field dependence of the Heisenberg coupling parameters.
