Spatial Quantum State Tomography with A Deformable Mirror

Quantum tomography is an essential experimental tool for testing any quantum technology implementations. Transverse spatial quantum states of light play a key role in many experiments in the field of quantum information as well as in free-space optical communications. In this letter we propose and experimentally demonstrate the tomography of spatial quantum states with a deformable mirror. It may be used to significantly outperform the conventional method with a spatial light modulator (SLM) in terms of speed and efficiency, at the same time providing polarization insensitive operation.

Absorption and emission cross section of Yb3+ ions in Al2O3 and P2O5 doped fibers

The results of measurements of the emission and absorption cross section for the transition 2F5/2 -> 2F7/2 of Yb3+ ions in Al2O3 and P2O5 doped silica fibers are presented. Different techniques based on spectroscopic data, and more direct technique involving optical saturation of the transition are employed. The data obtained indicate an essential difference in cross section spectra of Yb3+ ions in alumosilicate and phosphosilicate fibers.

Relativistic Quantum Cryptography

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a concept of secret key exchange supported by fundamentals of quantum physics. Its perfect realization offers unconditional key security, however, known practical schemes are potentially vulnerable if the quantum channel loss exceeds a certain realization-specific bound. This discrepancy is caused by the fact that any practical photon source has a non-zero probability of emitting two or more photons at a time, while theory needs exactly one. We report an essentially different QKD scheme based on both quantum physics and theory of relativity. It works flawlessly with practical photon sources at arbitrary large channel loss. Our scheme is naturally tailored for free-space optical channels, and may be used in ground-to-satellite communications, where losses are prohibitively large and unpredictable for conventional QKD.
