Internal ring waves in a three-layer fluid over a linear shear current

Oceanic internal waves often have curvilinear fronts and propagate over various currents. We present the first study of long weakly-nonlinear internal ring waves in a three-layer fluid in the presence of a background linear shear current. The leading order of this theory leads to the angular adjustment equation - a nonlinear first-order differential equation describing the dependence of the linear long wave speed on the angle to the direction of the current. Ring waves correspond to singular solution (envelope of the general solution) of this equation, and they can exist only under certain conditions. The constructed solutions reveal qualitative differences in the shapes of the wavefronts of the two baroclinic modes: the wavefront of the faster mode is elongated in the direction of the current, while the wavefront of the slower mode is squeezed. Moreover, different regimes are identified according to the vorticity strength. When the vorticity is weak, part of the wavefront is able to propagate upstream. However, when the vorticity is strong enough, the whole wavefront propagates downstream. A richer behaviour can be observed for the slower mode. As the vorticity increases, singularities of the swallowtail-type may arise and, eventually, solutions with compact wavefronts crossing the downstream axis cease to exist. We show that the latter is related to the long-wave instability of the base flow. We obtain analytical expressions for the coefficients of the cKdV-type amplitude equation, and numerically model the evolution of the waves for both modes. The initial evolution is in agreement with the leading-order predictions for the deformations of the wavefronts. Then, as the wavefronts expand, strong dispersive effects in the upstream direction are revealed. Moreover, when nonlinearity is enhanced, fission of waves can occur in the upstream part of the ring waves.

On Boussinesq-type models for long longitudinal waves in elastic rods

In this paper we revisit the derivations of model equations describing long nonlinear longitudinal bulk strain waves in elastic rods within the scope of the Murnaghan model in order to derive a Boussinesq-type model, and extend these derivations to include axially symmetric loading on the lateral boundary surface, and longitudinal pre-stretch. We systematically derive two forced Boussinesq-type models from the full equations of motion and non-zero surface boundary conditions, utilising the presence of two small parameters characterising the smallness of the wave amplitude and the long wavelength compared to the radius of the waveguide. We compare the basic dynamical properties of both models (linear dispersion curves and solitary wave solutions). We also briefly describe the laboratory experiments on generation of bulk strain solitary waves in the Ioffe Institute, and suggest that this generation process can be modelled using the derived equations.

Nonlinear ring waves in a two-layer fluid

Surface and interfacial weakly-nonlinear ring waves in a two-layer fluid are modelled numerically, within the framework of the recently derived 2+1-dimensional cKdV-type equation. In a case study, we consider concentric waves from a localised initial condition and waves in a 2D version of the dam-break problem, as well as discussing the effect of a piecewise-constant shear flow. The modelling shows, in particular, the formation of 2D dispersive shock waves (DSWs) and oscillatory wave trains. The surface and interfacial DSWs generated in our numerical experiments look distinctively different.

Long ring waves in a stratified fluid over a shear flow

Oceanic waves registered by satellite observations often have curvilinear fronts and propagate over various currents. In this paper, we study long linear and weakly-nonlinear ring waves in a stratified fluid in the presence of a depth-dependent horizontal shear flow. It is shown that despite the clashing geometries of the waves and the shear flow, there exists a linear modal decomposition (different from the known decomposition in Cartesian geometry), which can be used to describe distortion of the wavefronts of surface and internal waves, and systematically derive a 2+1 - dimensional cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries - type equation for the amplitudes of the waves. The general theory is applied to the case of the waves in a two-layer fluid with a piecewise-constant current, with an emphasis on the effect of the shear flow on the geometry of the wavefronts. The distortion of the wavefronts is described by the singular solution (envelope of the general solution) of the nonlinear first-order differential equation, constituting generalisation of the dispersion relation in this curvilinear geometry. There exists a striking difference in the shape of the wavefronts of surface and interfacial waves propagating over the same shear flow.

Modelling of nonlinear wave scattering in a delaminated elastic bar

Integrity of layered structures, extensively used in modern industry, strongly depends on the quality of their interfaces; poor adhesion or delamination can lead to a failure of the structure. Can nonlinear waves help us to control the quality of layered structures? In this paper we numerically model the dynamics of a long longitudinal strain solitary wave in a split, symmetric layered bar. The recently developed analytical approach, based on matching two asymptotic multiple-scales expansions and the integrability theory of the KdV equation by the Inverse Scattering Transform, is used to develop an effective semi-analytical numerical approach for these types of problems. We also employ a direct finite-difference method and compare the numerical results with each other, and with the analytical predictions. The numerical modelling confirms that delamination causes fission of an incident solitary wave and, thus, can be used to detect the defect.

Coupled Ostrovsky equations for internal waves in a shear flow

In the context of fluid flows, the coupled Ostrovsky equations arise when two distinct linear long wave modes have nearly coincident phase speeds in the presence of background rotation. In this paper, nonlinear waves in a stratified fluid in the presence of shear flow are investigated both analytically, using techniques from asymptotic perturbation theory, and through numerical simulations. The dispersion relation of the system, based on a three-layer model of a stratified shear flow, reveals various dynamical behaviours, including the existence of unsteady and steady envelope wave packets.

On the integrable elliptic cylindrical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation

There exist two versions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, related to the Cartesian and cylindrical geometries of the waves. In this paper we derive and study a new version, related to the elliptic cylindrical geometry. The derivation is given in the context of surface waves, but the derived equation is a universal integrable model applicable to generic weakly-nonlinear weakly-dispersive waves. We also show that there exist nontrivial transformations between all three versions of the KP equation associated with the physical problem formulation, and use them to obtain new classes of approximate solutions for water waves.

Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution of the Cauchy problem for the Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation

We consider the initial-value problem for the regularized Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation in the class of periodic functions. Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution, given in terms of two counter-propagating waves satisfying the uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, is examined. We prove analytically and illustrate numerically that the improved accuracy of the solution can be achieved at the time scales of the Ostrovsky equation if solutions of the linearized Ostrovsky equations are incorporated into the asymptotic solution. Compared to the previous literature, we show that the approximation error can be controlled in the energy space of periodic functions and the nonzero mean values of the periodic functions can be naturally incorporated in the justification analysis.

Weakly nonlinear extension of d'Alembert's formula

We consider a weakly nonlinear solution of the Cauchy problem for the regularised Boussinesq equation, which constitutes an extension of the classical d'Alembert's formula for the linear wave equation. The solution is given by a simple and explicit formula, expressed in terms of two special functions solving the initial-value problems for two Korteweg-de Vries equations. We test the formula by considering several examples with `exactly solvable initial conditions' and their perturbations. Explicit analytical solutions are compared with the results of direct numerical simulations.

Initial-value problem for coupled Boussinesq equations and a hierarchy of Ostrovsky equations

We consider the initial-value problem for a system of coupled Boussinesq equations on the infinite line for localised or sufficiently rapidly decaying initial data, generating sufficiently rapidly decaying right- and left-propagating waves. We study the dynamics of weakly nonlinear waves, and using asymptotic multiple-scales expansions and averaging with respect to the fast time, we obtain a hierarchy of asymptotically exact coupled and uncoupled Ostrovsky equations for unidirectional waves. We then construct a weakly nonlinear solution of the initial-value problem in terms of solutions of the derived Ostrovsky equations within the accuracy of the governing equations, and show that there are no secular terms. When coupling parameters are equal to zero, our results yield a weakly nonlinear solution of the initial-value problem for the Boussinesq equation in terms of solutions of the initial-value problems for two Korteweg-de Vries equations, integrable by the Inverse Scattering Transform. We also perform relevant numerical simulations of the original unapproximated system of Boussinesq equations to illustrate the difference in the behaviour of its solutions for different asymptotic regimes.

On linear degeneracy of integrable quasilinear systems in higher dimensions

We investigate $(d+1)$-dimensional quasilinear systems which are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. In the case $d\geq 3$ we formulate a conjecture that any such system with an irreducible dispersion relation must be linearly degenerate. We prove this conjecture in the 2-component case, providing a complete classification of multi-dimensional integrable systems in question. In particular, our results imply the non-existence of 2-component integrable systems of hydrodynamic type for $d\geq 6$. In the second half of the paper we discuss a numerical and analytical evidence for the impossibility of the breakdown of smooth initial data for linearly degenerate systems in 2+1 dimensions.
