Measuring the muon content of inclined air showers using AERA and the water-Cherenkov detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory

We present a novel approach for assessing the muon content of air showers with large zenith angles on a combined analysis of their radio emission and particle footprint. We use the radiation energy reconstructed by the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) as an energy estimator and determine the muon number independently with the water-Cherenkov detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, deployed on a 1500 m grid. We focus our analysis on air showers with primary energy above 4 EeV to ensure full detection efficiency. Over approximately ten years of accumulated data, we identify a set of 40 high-quality events that are used in the analysis. The estimated muon contents in data are compatible with those for iron primaries as predicted by current-generation hadronic interaction models. This result can be interpreted as a deficit of muons in simulations as a lighter mass composition has been established from Xmax measurements. This muon deficit was already observed in previous analyses of the Auger Collaboration and is confirmed using hybrid events that include radio measurements for the first time.

Artificial Neural Network as a FPGA Trigger for a Detection of Very Inclined Air Showers

Neutrinos can interact in the atmosphere (downward-going ν) or in the Earth crust (Earth-skimming ν), producing air showers that can be observed with arrays of detectors at the ground. The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory can detect these types of cascades. The distinguishing signature for neutrino events is the presence of very inclined showers produced close to the ground (i.e., after having traversed a large amount of atmosphere). Up to now, the Pierre Auger Observatory did not find any candidate for a neutrino event. A very low rate of events potentially generated by neutrinos is a significant challenge for a detection technique and requires both sophisticated algorithms and high-resolution hardware. We present a trigger based on a pipeline artificial neural network (ANN) implemented in a large FPGA which after learning can recognize traces corresponding to special types of events. The structure of an ANN algorithm being developed on the MATLAB platform has been implemented into the fast logic of the biggest Cyclone V E FPGA used for the prototype of the Front-End Board for the Auger-Beyond-2015 effort. Several algorithms were tested, however, the Levenberg-Marquardt one seems to be the most efficient. The network was taught: a) to recognize "old" showers (learning on a basis of real very inclined Auger showers (positive markers) and real standard showers especially triggered by Time over Threshold (negative marker), b) to recognize "young" showers (on the basis of simulated "young" events (positive markers) and standard Auger events as a negative reference). A three-layer neural network being taught by real very inclined Auger showers shows a good efficiency in pattern recognition of 16-point traces with profiles characteristic of "old" showers.

Dielectric properties of PLZT-x/65/35 (2 \leqslant x \leqslant 13) under mechanical stress, electric field and temperature loading

We investigated the effect of uniaxial pressure (0-1000 bars) applied parallely to the ac electric field on dielectric properties of PLZT-x/65/35 (2 \leqslant x \leqslant 13) ceramics. There was revealed a significant effect of the external stress on these properties. The application of uniaxial pressure leads to the change of the peak intensity of the electric permittivity (\varepsilon), of the frequency dispersion as well as of the dielectric hysteresis. The peak intensity $\varepsilon$ becomes diffused/sharpened and shifts to a higher/lower temperatures with increasing the pressure. It was concluded that the application of uniaxial pressure induces similar effects as increasing the Ti ion concentration in PZT system. We interpreted our results based on the domain switching processes under the action of combined electromechanical loading.
