Development and application of CATCH: A cylindrical active tracker and calorimeter system for hyperon-proton scattering experiments

In this study, we developed a new proton detector system called CATCH, which was designed for a scattering experiment involving a $Σ$ hyperon and a proton (J-PARC E40). CATCH is a cylindrical detector system covering an inner target that can be used to measure the trajectory and energy of a proton emitted from the target for the kinematic identification of a $Σ$p scattering event. It comprises a cylindrical fiber tracker (CFT), a bismuth germanate (BGO) calorimeter, and a plastic scintillator hodoscope (PiID), which are coaxially arranged from the inner to the outer sides. The CFT is a tracking detector consisting of 5,000 scintillation fibers, and it has two types of cylindrical layers in which the fibers are arranged in straight and spiral configurations. 24 BGO crystals are placed around the CFT to measure the kinetic energy of the recoil proton. The PiID is used to determine whether the recoil proton is stopped in the BGO calorimeter. We performed proton-proton (pp) and proton-carbon (pC) scattering experiments using an 80 MeV proton beam to evaluate the performance of CATCH. The total energy resolution for the recoil proton was 2.8 MeV in $σ$ for the entire angular region after the energy calibrations of the BGO calorimeter and the CFT. The angular resolution of the CFT was 1.27 degrees in $σ$ for the proton, and the time resolution was more than 1.8 ns in $σ$. We also developed an analysis method for deriving the cross section of the pp scattering using CATCH. The obtained relative differential cross section for the pp elastic scattering was consistent with that obtained by reliable partial wave analysis, and the systematic error was maintained at below 10%. These performance results satisfy our requirements for a reliable detection system for the $Σ$p scattering experiment conducted at J-PARC .

Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Spin splitting and strain in epitaxial monolayer WSe$_2$ on graphene

We present the electronic and structural properties of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ grown by pulsed-laser deposition on monolayer graphene (MLG) on SiC. The spin splitting in the WSe$_{2}$ valence band at $\overline{\mathrm{K}}$ was $Δ_\mathrm{SO}=0.469\pm0.008$ eV by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Synchrotron-based grazing-incidence in-plane X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the in-plane lattice constant of monolayer WSe$_{2}$ to be $a_\mathrm{WSe_2}=3.2757\pm0.0008 \mathrm{Å}$. This indicates a lattice compression of -0.19 % from bulk WSe$_{2}$. By using experimentally determined graphene lattice constant ($a_\mathrm{MLG}=2.4575\pm0.0007 \mathrm{Å}$), we found that a 3$\times$3 unit cell of the slightly compressed WSe$_{2}$ is perfectly commensurate with a 4$\times$4 graphene lattice with a mismatch below 0.03 %, which could explain why the monolayer WSe$_{2}$ is compressed on MLG. From XRD and first-principles calculations, however, we conclude that the observed size of strain is negligibly small to account for a discrepancy in $Δ_\mathrm{SO}$ found between exfoliated and epitaxial monolayers in earlier ARPES. In addition, angle-resolved, ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shed light on the band alignment between WSe$_{2}$ and MLG/SiC and indicate electron transfer from graphene to the WSe$_{2}$ monolayer. As further revealed by atomic force microscopy, the WSe$_{2}$ island size depends on the number of carbon layers on top of the SiC substrate. This suggests that the epitaxy of WSe$_{2}$ favors the weak van der Waals interactions with graphene while it is perturbed by the influence of the SiC substrate and its carbon buffer layer.

Search for $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus by the $^6$Li$(π^-,K^+)$ reaction at $p_{π^-}$ = 1.2 GeV/$c$

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, $^6_Λ$H, by the $^6$Li($π^-,K^+$) reaction at $p_{π^-}$ =1.2 GeV/$c$. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus neither below nor above the $^4_Λ$H$+2n$ particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

Existence of a phase transition under finite magnetic field in the long-range RKKY Ising spin glass Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

A phase transition of a model compound of the long-range Ising spin glass (SG) Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where spins interact via the RKKY interaction, has been investigated. The static and the dynamic scaling analyses reveal that the SG phase transition in the model magnet belongs to the mean-field universality class. Moreover, the characteristic relaxation time in finite magnetic fields exhibits a critical divergent behavior as well as in zero field, indicating a stability of the SG phase in finite fields. The presence of the SG phase transition in field in the model magnet strongly syggests that the replica symmetry is broken in the long-range Ising SG.

Production of Neutron-Rich Lambda Hypernuclei at J-PARC

We discuss the usefulness of the double charge-exchange reactions (DCX) for the production of the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei. We believe the (pi-,K+) reaction is one of the most promising DCX reactions, and propose to produce the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei, 6(Lambda)H and 9(Lambda)He, at the J-PARC 50 GeV PS by the reaction (J-PARC E10 experiment). The design of the experiment is presented.

Can The Majorana neutrino CP-violating phases be restricted ?

We reanalyze the constraints in neutrino masses and MNS lepton mixing parameters using the new data from the terrestrial (KamLAND) and astrophysical (WMAP) observations together with the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. We discuss the possibility of getting the bound for the Majorana CP violating phase.

Constraints from Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We examine the constraints from the recent HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. In this scenario, we obtain possible upper bounds for the Majorana CP violating phase in the lepton sector by incorporating the data from the neutrino oscillation, the single beta decay experiments, and from the astrophysical observation. We also predict the neutrino mass that may be measurable in the future beta decay experiments.

How Far Can the SO(10) Two Higgs Model Describe the Observed Neutrino Masses and Mixings ?

Can the SO(10) model with one {\bf 10} and one {\bf 126} Higgs scalars give the observed masses and mixings of quarks and leptons without any other additional Higgs scalars? Recently, at least, for quarks and charged leptons, it has been demonstrated that it is possible. However, for the neutrinos, it is usually said that parameters which are determined from the quark and charged lepton masses cannot give the observed large neutrino mixings. This problem is systematically investigated, and it is concluded that the present data cannot exclude SO(10) model with two Higgs scalars although it cannot give the best fit values of the data.

MNS Parameters from Neutrino Oscillations, Single Beta Decay and Double Beta Decay

We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix =66rom the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation, tritium beta decay, and neutrinoless double beta decay for Majorana neutrinos. We show that the small mixing angle solutions for solar neutrino problem are disfavored for small averaged mass ($<m_ν>$) of neutrinoless double beta decay ($\leq 0.01$ eV) in the inverse neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. This is the case even in the normal mass hierarchy scenario except for very restrictive value of the averaged neutrino mass ($\bar{m_ν}$) of single beta decay. The lower mass bound for $\bar{m_ν}$ is given from the present neutrino oscillation data. We obtain some relations between $<m_ν>$ and $\bar{m_ν}$. The constraints on the Majorana CP violating phases are also given.

CP Violations in Lepton Number Violation Processes and Neutrino Oscillations

We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix from the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation and lepton number violation processes. We introduce a graphical representation of the CP violation phases which appear in the lepton number violation processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, the $μ^--e^+$ conversion, and the K decay, $K^-\toπ^+μ^-μ^-.$ Using this graphical representation, we derive the constraints on the CP violation phases in the lepton sector.

Graphical Representation of CP Violation Effects in Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We illustrate the graphical method that gives the constraints on the parameters appearing in the neutrino oscillation experiments and the neutrinoless double beta decay. This method is applicable in three and four generations. Though this method is valid for more general case, we examine explicitly the cases in which the CP violating factors take $\pm 1$ or $\pm i$ in the neutrinoless double beta decay for illustrative clearance. We also discuss some mass matrix models which lead to the above CP violating factors.
