Interplay among transversity induced asymmetries in hadron leptoproduction

In the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark several left-right asymmetries are possible for the hadrons in the jet. When only one unpolarized hadron is selected, it exhibits an azimuthal modulation known as Collins effect. When a pair of oppositely charged hadrons is observed, three asymmetries can be considered, a di-hadron asymmetry and two single hadron asymmetries. In lepton deep inelastic scattering on transversely polarized nucleons all these asymmetries are coupled with the transversity distribution. From the high statistics COMPASS data on oppositely charged hadron-pair production we have investigated for the first time the dependence of these three asymmetries on the difference of the azimuthal angles of the two hadrons. The similarity of transversity induced single and di-hadron asymmetries is discussed. A new analysis of the data allows to establish quantitative relationships among them, providing for the first time strong experimental indication that the underlying fragmentation mechanisms are all driven by a common physical process.

Longitudinal double spin asymmetries in single hadron quasi-real photoproduction at high pTp_T

We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries ALLA_{LL} for single hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality Q2Q^2 < 1(GeV/c\it c)2^2 for transverse hadron momenta pTp_T in the range 0.7 GeV/c\it c to 4 GeV/c\it c . They were determined using COMPASS data taken with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/c\it c or 200 GeV/c\it c impinging on polarised 6LiD\mathrm{{}^6LiD} or NH3\mathrm{NH_3} targets. The experimental asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are sensitive to the gluon polarisation ΔGΔG inside the nucleon in the range of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons 0.05<xg<0.20.05 < x_g < 0.2.

CAST search for sub-eV mass solar axions with 3He buffer gas

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has extended its search for solar axions by using 3He as a buffer gas. At T=1.8 K this allows for larger pressure settings and hence sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with 4He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eV < m_a < 0.64 eV. From the absence of excess X-rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g_ag < 2.3 x 10^{-10} GeV^{-1} at 95% CL, the exact value depending on the pressure setting. KSVZ axions are excluded at the upper end of our mass range, the first time ever for any solar axion search. In future we will extend our search to m_a < 1.15 eV, comfortably overlapping with cosmological hot dark matter bounds.

Exclusive rho^0 muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuterons

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A_UT in hard exclusive production of rho^0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E^q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q^2, x_B and p_t^2 dependence of A_UT is presented in a wide kinematic range. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E^u and E^d approximately cancel.

First Measurement of Chiral Dynamics in π^- γ-> π^- π^- π^+

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated the π^- γ-> π^- π^- π^+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt(s) < 5 m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t' < 0.001 (GeV/c)^2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π) = sqrt(s) were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of s\sqrt{s} with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Results and perspectives of the solar axion search with the CAST experiment

The status of the solar axion search with the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) will be presented. Recent results obtained by the use of 3^3He as a buffer gas has allowed us to extend our sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with 4^4He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eV≤ma≤ \le m_{a} \le 0.64 eV. From the absence of an excess of x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ≤2.3×10−10_{aγ} \le 2.3\times 10^{-10} GeV−1^{-1} at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. CAST published results represent the best experimental limit on the photon couplings to axions and other similar exotic particles dubbed WISPs (Weakly Interacting Slim Particles) in the considered mass range and for the first time the limit enters the region favored by QCD axion models. Preliminary sensitivities for axion masses up to 1.16 eV will also be shown reaching mean upper limits on the axion-photon coupling of gaγ≤3.5×10−10_{aγ} \le 3.5\times 10^{-10} GeV−1^{-1} at 95% C.L. Expected sensibilities for the extension of the CAST program up to 2014 will be presented. Moreover long term options for a new helioscope experiment will be evoked.

Collins and Sivers asymmetries for pions and kaons in muon-deuteron DIS

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions.

Solar axion search with the CAST experiment

The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment is searching for solar axions by their conversion into photons inside the magnet pipe of an LHC dipole. The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will present the first results on the 4He^{4}{\rm He} data taking as well as the system upgrades that have been operated in the last year in order to adapt the experiment for the 3He^{3}{\rm He} data taking. Expected sensitivities on the coupling constant of axions to photons will be given for the recent 3He^{3}{\rm He} run just started in March 2008.

The reaction np→ppπ−{n} {p} \to {p} {p} π^{-} from threshold up to 570 MeV

The reaction np→ppπ−{n} {p} \to {p} {p} π^{-} has been studied in a kinematically complete measurement with a large acceptance time-of-flight spectrometer for incident neutron energies between threshold and 570 MeV. The proton-proton invariant mass distributions show a strong enhancement due to the pp(1S0^{1}{S}_{0}) final state interaction. A large anisotropy was found in the pion angular distributions in contrast to the reaction pp→ppπ0{p}{p} \to {p}{p} π^{0}. At small energies, a large forward/backward asymmetry has been observed. From the measured integrated cross section σ(np→ppπ−)σ({n}{p} \to {\rm p}{p} π^{-}), the isoscalar cross section σ01σ_{01} has been extracted. Its energy dependence indicates that mainly partial waves with Sp final states contribute. Note: Due to a coding error, the differential cross sections dσ/dMpp{d σ}/{d M_{pp}} as shown in Fig. 9 are too small by a factor of two, and inn Table 3 the differential cross sections dσ/dΩπ∗{d σ}/{d Ω_π^{*}} are too large by a factor of 10/2π10/2π. The integrated cross sections and all conclusions remain unchanged. A corresponding erratum has been submitted and accepted by European Physics Journal.

The X-ray Telescope of CAST

The Cern Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is in operation and taking data since 2003. The main objective of the CAST experiment is to search for a hypothetical pseudoscalar boson, the axion, which might be produced in the core of the sun. The basic physics process CAST is based on is the time inverted Primakoff effect, by which an axion can be converted into a detectable photon in an external electromagnetic field. The resulting X-ray photons are expected to be thermally distributed between 1 and 7 keV. The most sensitive detector system of CAST is a pn-CCD detector combined with a Wolter I type X-ray mirror system. With the X-ray telescope of CAST a background reduction of more than 2 orders off magnitude is achieved, such that for the first time the axion photon coupling constant g_agg can be probed beyond the best astrophysical constraints g_agg < 1 x 10^-10 GeV^-1.

Analysing powers for the reaction n⃗p→ppπ−\vec{\rm n} {\rm p} \to {\rm p} {\rm p} π^{-} and for np elastic scattering from 270 to 570 MeV

The analysing power of the reaction np→ppπ−{\rm n}{\rm p} \to {\rm p}{\rm p} π^{-} for neutron energies between threshold and 570 MeV has been determined using a transversely polarised neutron beam at PSI. The reaction has been studied in a kinematically complete measurement using a time-of-flight spectrometer with large acceptance. Analysing powers have been determined as a function of the c.m. pion angle in different regions of the proton-proton invariant mass. They are compared to other data from the reactions np→ppπ−{\rm n}{\rm p} \to {\rm p}{\rm p} π^{-} and pp→ppπ0{{\rm p}{\rm p} \to {\rm p}{\rm p} π^{0}}. The np elastic scattering analysing power was determined as a by-product of the measurements.
