Measurement of structure dependent radiative K+→e+νγK^{+} \rightarrow e^{+} νγ decays using stopped positive kaons

The structure dependent radiative K+→e+νγK^+ \rightarrow e^+ νγ (Ke2γSD+K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}) decay was investigated with stopped positive kaons. The e+e^+ momentum spectra containing 574±\pm30 Ke2γSD+K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+} events with a K+→μ+νK^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν (Kμ2K_{\mu2}) background of 28±\pm19 events were measured with and without a photon in coincidence and analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations for acceptance and detector response to extract the ratio of the branching ratio of the Ke2γSD+K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+} decay and the K+→e+νK^+ \rightarrow e^+ ν decay including the internal bremsstrahlung process (Ke2(γ)K_{e2(γ)}). A value of Br(Ke2γSD+)/Br(Ke2(γ))=1.12±0.07stat±0.04systBr(K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}) / Br(K_{e2(γ)}) = 1.12\pm0.07_{\rm stat} \pm 0.04_{\rm syst} was obtained. This indicates a partial branching ratio, Br(Ke2γSD+, pe>200 MeV/c, Eγ>10 MeV)/Br(Kμ2)=(1.85±0.11stat±0.07syst)×10−5Br(K_{e2γ}^{\rm SD^+}, ~{p_e>200~{\rm MeV}/c}, ~{E_γ>10~{\rm MeV}})/Br(K_{\mu2}) =(1.85 \pm 0.11_{\rm{stat}} \pm 0.07_{\rm{syst}}) \times10^{-5}, which is 25%(∼25\%(\sim2.5σ)σ) higher than the previous experimental result.

Interference effect between ϕϕ and Λ(1520)Λ(1520) production channels in the γp→K+K−pγp \rightarrow K^+K^-p reaction near threshold

The ϕϕ-Λ(1520)Λ(1520) interference effect in the γp→K+K−pγp\to K^+K^-p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between ϕϕ and Λ(1520)Λ(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K+K−K^+K^- pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the s=2.1\sqrt{s}=2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for ϕϕ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Effects of radiation damage caused by proton irradiation on Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs)

We have investigated the effects caused by proton-induced radiation damage on Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC), a pixelized photon detector developed by Hamamatsu Photonics. The leakage current of irradiated MPPC samples linearly increases with total irradiated doses due to radiation damage, which is not completely recovered even after a year from the irradiation. No significant change has been observed in the gains at least up to 8.0 Gy (9.1×1079.1\times10^7 n/mm2^2 in 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluence, ΦeqΦ_{\rm eq}). The device has completely lost its photon-counting capability due to baseline fluctuations and noise pile-up after 21 Gy irradiation (2.4×1082.4\times10^8 n/mm2^2 in ΦeqΦ_{\rm eq}), which might be problematic for some applications, such as ring-imaging Cherenkov detectors. We have found that the pulse-height resolution has been slightly deteriorated after 42 Gy irradiation (4.8×1084.8\times10^8 n/mm2^2 in ΦeqΦ_{\rm eq}), where the measured sample has been illuminated with a few hundred photons. This effect should be considered in the case of energy-measurement applications.

Search for K−ppK^-pp bound state via γd→K+π−Xγd \rightarrow K^+ π^-X reaction at Eγ=1.5−2.4E_γ=1.5-2.4 GeV

A search for K−ppK^-pp bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the γd→K+π−Xγd \rightarrow K^+ π^- \rm{X} reaction at Eγ_γ=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of K+π−K^+ π^- photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/c2c^2, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the K−ppK^-pp bound state production were determined to be 0.1−-0.7 μμ b (95% confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

Measurement of Spin-Density Matrix Elements for ϕϕ-Meson Photoproduction from Protons and Deuterons Near Threshold

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for γp→ϕpγp \to ϕp, γd→ϕpnγd \to ϕp n and γd→ϕdγd \to ϕd at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at EγE_γ=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of ϕϕ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong EγE_γ-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the tt-channel is observed.

Measurement of the incoherent γd→ϕpnγd \to ϕp n photoproduction near threshold

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent ϕϕ-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at \Eg=1.5-2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the ϕϕ-N interaction within a nucleus.

Measurement of K^+ \to π^0 μ^+ νγdecay using stopped kaons

The K^+ \to π^0 μ^+ νγ(Kμ3γK_{μ3 γ}) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A Kμ3γK_{μ3 γ} sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial branching ratio Br(Kμ3γ,Eγ>30MeV,θμ+γ>20∘)Br(K_{μ3 γ}, E_γ>30 {\rm MeV}, θ_{μ^+ γ}>20^{\circ}) was found to be [2.4±0.5(stat)±0.6(syst)]×10−5[2.4 \pm 0.5(stat) \pm 0.6(syst)]\times 10^{-5}, which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
