Measurement of charged-pion production in deep-inelastic scattering off nuclei with the CLAS detector

Background: Energetic quarks in nuclear DIS propagate through the nuclear medium. Processes that are believed to occur inside nuclei include quark energy loss through medium-stimulated gluon bremsstrahlung and intra-nuclear interactions of forming hadrons. More data are required to gain a more complete understanding of these effects. Purpose: To test the theoretical models of parton transport and hadron formation, we compared their predictions for the nuclear and kinematic dependence of pion production in nuclei. Methods: We have measured charged-pion production in semi-inclusive DIS off D, C, Fe, and Pb using the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014 GeV electron beam. We report results on the nuclear-to-deuterium multiplicity ratio for π+π^{+} and π−π^{-} as a function of energy transfer, four-momentum transfer, and pion energy fraction or transverse momentum - the first three-dimensional study of its kind. Results: The π+π^{+} multiplicity ratio is found to depend strongly on the pion fractional energy zz, and reaches minimum values of 0.67±0.030.67\pm0.03, 0.43±0.020.43\pm0.02, and 0.27±0.010.27\pm0.01 for the C, Fe, and Pb targets, respectively. The zz dependences of the multiplicity ratios for π+π^{+} and π−π^{-} are equal within uncertainties for C and Fe targets but show differences at the level of 10%\% for the Pb-target data. The results are qualitatively described by the GiBUU transport model, as well as with a model based on hadron absorption, but are in tension with calculations based on nuclear fragmentation functions. Conclusions: These precise results will strongly constrain the kinematic and flavor dependence of nuclear effects in hadron production, probing an unexplored kinematic region. They will help to reveal how the nucleus reacts to a fast quark, thereby shedding light on its color structure, transport properties, and on the mechanisms of the hadronization process.

Measurement of the proton spin structure at long distances

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. Here we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0 GeV2^2. This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, e.g. in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections.

Measurement of the Q^2 Dependence of the Deuteron Spin Structure Function g_1 and its Moments at Low Q^2 with CLAS

We measured the g1g_1 spin structure function of the deuteron at low Q2Q^{2}, where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory (χχPT). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of W≈1.9W\approx1.9~GeV. The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment Γˉ1d\barΓ_{1}^{d} and the integral Iˉγd\bar{I}_γ^d related to the spin polarizability γ0dγ_{0}^{d} are precisely determined down to a minimum Q2Q^2 of 0.02~GeV2^2 for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We compare them to several χχPT calculations and models. These results are the first in a program of benchmark measurements of polarization observables in the χχPT domain.

Multidimensional, high precision measurements of beam single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive π+π^{+} electroproduction off protons in the valence region

High precision measurements of the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from the proton have been performed using a 10.6~GeV incident electron beam and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. We report here a high precision multidimensional study of single π+π^{+} SIDIS data over a large kinematic range in Bjorken x, fractional energy and transverse momentum of the hadron as well as photon virtualities Q2Q^{2} ranging from 1−7 1-7\,GeV2^{2}. In particular, the structure function ratio FLUsin⁡ϕ/FUUF^{\sinϕ}_{LU}/F_{UU} has been determined, where FLUsin⁡ϕF^{\sinϕ}_{LU} is a twist-3 quantity that can reveal novel aspects of emergent hadron mass and quark-gluon correlations within the nucleon. The data's impact on the evolving understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms and their kinematic variation is explored using theoretical models for the different contributing transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions.

Differential cross sections for Λ(1520) using photoproduction at CLAS

The reaction γp→K+Λ(1520)γp \rightarrow K^{+} Λ(1520) using photoproduction data from the CLAS g12g12 experiment at Jefferson Lab is studied. The decay of Λ(1520)Λ(1520) into two exclusive channels, Σ+π−Σ^{+}π^{-} and Σ−π+Σ^{-}π^{+}, is studied from the detected K+K^{+}, π+π^{+}, and π−π^{-} particles. A good agreement is established for the Λ(1520)Λ(1520) differential cross sections with the previous CLAS measurements. The differential cross sections as a function of CM angle are extended to higher photon energies. Newly added are the differential cross sections as a function of invariant 4-momentum transfer tt, which is the natural variable to use for a theoretical model based on a Regge-exchange reaction mechanism. No new N∗N^* resonances decaying into the K+Λ(1520)K^+Λ(1520) final state are found.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of Ξ−Ξ^--14^{14}N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ−Ξ^- absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-ΛΛ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ−+14Ξ^{-} + ^{14}N → Λ10\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_ΛBe + Λ5^5_ΛHe. For the binding energy of the Ξ−Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ−Ξ^--14^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.211.27 \pm 0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ−Ξ^- is likely a nuclear 1p1p state which indicates a weak ΞNΞN-ΛΛΛΛ coupling.

Polarized Structure Function σLT′σ_{LT'} from π0pπ^0 p Electroproduction Data in the Resonance Region at 0.40.4 GeV2<Q2<1.0^2 < Q^2 < 1.0 GeV2^2

The first results on the σLT′σ_{LT'} structure function in exclusive π0pπ^0p electroproduction at invariant masses of the final state of 1.5 GeV << WW << 1.8 GeV and in the range of photon virtualities 0.4 GeV2<Q2<1.0^2 < Q^2 < 1.0 GeV2^2 were obtained from data on beam spin asymmetries and differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The Legendre moments determined from the σLT′σ_{LT'} structure function have demonstrated sensitivity to the contributions from the nucleon resonances in the second and third resonance regions. These new data on the beam spin asymmetries in π0pπ^0p electroproduction extend the opportunities for the extraction of the nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.

Beam spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive electroproduction of a hadron pair

A first measurement of the longitudinal beam spin asymmetry ALU in the semi-inclusive electroproduction of pairs of charged pions is reported. ALU is a higher-twist observable and offers the cleanest access to the nucleon twist-3 parton distribution function e(x). Data have been collected in the Hall-B at Jefferson Lab by impinging a 5.498 GeV electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target, and reconstructing the scattered electron and the pion pair with the CLAS detector. One-dimensional projections of the sin(phiR) moments of ALU are extracted for the kinematic variables of interest in the valence quark region. The understanding of di-hadron production is essential for the interpretation of observables in single hadron production in semi-inclusive DIS, and pioneering measurements of single spin asymmetries in di-hadron production open a new avenue in studies of QCD dynamics.

Evidence for the N′(1720)3/2+N'(1720)3/2^+ Nucleon Resonance from Combined Studies of CLAS π+π−pπ^+π^-p Photo- and Electroproduction Data

The analysis of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the γr,vp→π+π−pγ_{r,v} p \to π^+π^-p photo- and electroproduction reactions obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory was carried out with the goal to establish the contributing resonances in the mass range from 1.6~GeV to 1.8~GeV. In order to describe the photo- and electroproduction data with Q2Q^2-independent resonance masses and hadronic decay widths in the Q2Q^2 range below 1.5~GeV2^2, it was found that an N′(1720)3/2+N'(1720)3/2^+ state is required in addition to the already well-established nucleon resonances. This work demonstrates that the combined studies of π+π−pπ^+π^-p photo- and electroproduction data are vital for the observation of this resonance. The contributions from the N′(1720)3/2+N'(1720)3/2^+ state and the already established N(1720)3/2+N(1720)3/2^+ state with a mass of 1.745~GeV are well separated by their different hadronic decays to the πΔπΔ and ρpρp final states and the different Q2Q^2-evolution of their photo-/electroexcitation amplitudes. The N′(1720)3/2+N'(1720)3/2^+ state is the first recently established baryon resonance for which the results on the Q2Q^2-evolution of the photo-/electrocouplings have become available. These results are important for the exploration of the nature of the ``missing'' baryon resonances.

Photoproduction of ηη mesons off the proton for 1.2<Eγ<4.71.2 < E_γ< 4.7 GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction γp→pηγp\to pη using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The ηη mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, η→π+π−π0η\to π^+π^-π^0, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new ηη photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of ηη MAID\,2018 and the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis. Differential cross sections dσ/dtdσ/dt are presented for incident photon energies Eγ>2.9E_γ> 2.9 GeV (W>2.5W > 2.5 GeV), and compared with predictions which are based on Regge trajectories exchange in the tt-channel (Regge models). The data confirm the expected dominance of ρρ, ωω vector-meson exchange in an analysis by the Joint Physics Analysis Center.

Search for η′η' bound nuclei in the 12C(γ,p)^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p) reaction with simultaneous detection of decay products

We measured missing mass spectrum of the 12C(γ,p)^{12}{\rm C}(γ,p) reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from η′η' bound nuclei. We tagged an (η+pη+p) pair associated with the η′N→ηNη'N\toηN process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle cos⁡θlabηp<−0.9\cosθ^{ηp}_{lab}<-0.9 was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90%\% confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree η′η' production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the η′N→ηNη'N\toηN process and/or a shallow η′η'-nucleus potential.

Dark matter search in a Beam-Dump eXperiment (BDX) at Jefferson Lab

MeV-GeV dark matter (DM) is theoretically well motivated but remarkably unexplored. This proposal presents the MeV-GeV DM discovery potential for a ∼\sim1 m3^3 segmented CsI(Tl) scintillator detector placed downstream of the Hall A beam-dump at Jefferson Lab, receiving up to 1022^{22} electrons-on-target (EOT) in 285 days. This experiment (Beam-Dump eXperiment or BDX) would be sensitive to elastic DM-electron and to inelastic DM scattering at the level of 10 counts per year, reaching the limit of the neutrino irreducible background. The distinct signature of a DM interaction will be an electromagnetic shower of few hundreds of MeV, together with a reduced activity in the surrounding active veto counters. A detailed description of the DM particle χχ production in the dump and subsequent interaction in the detector has been performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Different approaches have been used to evaluate the expected backgrounds: the cosmogenic background has been extrapolated from the results obtained with a prototype detector running at INFN-LNS (Italy), while the beam-related background has been evaluated by GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed experiment will be sensitive to large regions of DM parameter space, exceeding the discovery potential of existing and planned experiments in the MeV-GeV DM mass range by up to two orders of magnitude.

First measurement of the helicity asymmetry EE in ηη photoproduction on the proton

Results are presented for the first measurement of the double-polarization helicity asymmetry E for the ηη photoproduction reaction γp→ηpγp \rightarrow ηp. Data were obtained using the FROzen Spin Target (FROST) with the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab, covering a range of center-of-mass energy W from threshold to 2.15 GeV and a large range in center-of-mass polar angle. As an initial application of these data, the results have been incorporated into the Jülich model to examine the case for the existence of a narrow N∗N^* resonance between 1.66 and 1.70 GeV. The addition of these data to the world database results in marked changes in the predictions for the E observable using that model. Further comparison with several theoretical approaches indicates these data will significantly enhance our understanding of nucleon resonances.

Interference effect between ϕϕ and Λ(1520)Λ(1520) production channels in the γp→K+K−pγp \rightarrow K^+K^-p reaction near threshold

The ϕϕ-Λ(1520)Λ(1520) interference effect in the γp→K+K−pγp\to K^+K^-p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between ϕϕ and Λ(1520)Λ(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K+K−K^+K^- pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the s=2.1\sqrt{s}=2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for ϕϕ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Measurement of Target and Double-spin Asymmetries for the e⃗p⃗→eπ+(n)\vec e\vec p\to eπ^+ (n) Reaction in the Nucleon Resonance Region at Low Q2Q^2

We report measurements of target- and double-spin asymmetries for the exclusive channel e⃗p⃗→eπ+(n)\vec e\vec p\to eπ^+ (n) in the nucleon resonance region at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH3_3 target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1.3, 2.0, 2.3 and 3.0 GeV. The new results are consistent with previous CLAS publications but are extended to a low Q2Q^2 range from 0.00650.0065 to 0.350.35 (GeV/c/c)2^2. The Q2Q^2 access was made possible by a custom-built Cherenkov detector that allowed the detection of electrons for scattering angles as low as 6∘6^\circ. These results are compared with the unitary isobar models JANR and MAID, the partial-wave analysis prediction from SAID and the dynamic model DMT. In many kinematic regions our results, in particular results on the target asymmetry, help to constrain the polarization-dependent components of these models.

Target and Beam-Target Spin Asymmetries in Exclusive π+π^+ and π−π^- Electroproduction with 1.6 to 5.7 GeV Electrons

Beam-target double spin asymmetries and target single-spin asymmetries in exclusive π+π^+ and π−π^- electroproduction were obtained from scattering of 1.6 to 5.7 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from longitudinally polarized protons (for π+π^+) and deuterons (for π−π^-) using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. The kinematic range covered is 1.1<W<2.61.1<W<2.6 GeV and 0.05<Q2<50.05<Q^2<5 GeV2^2, with good anglular coverage in the forward hemisphere. The asymmetry results were divided into approximately 40,000 kinematic bins for π+π^+ from free protons and 15,000 bins for π−π^- production from bound nucleons in the deuteron. The present results are found to be in reasonable agreement with fits to previous world data for W<1.7W<1.7 GeV and Q2<0.5Q^2<0.5 GeV2^2, with discrepancies increasing at higher values of Q2Q^2, especially for W>1.5W>1.5 GeV. Very large target-spin asymmetries are observed for W>1.6W>1.6 GeV. When combined with cross section measurements, the present results will provide powerful constraints on nucleon resonance amplitudes at moderate and large values of Q2Q^2, for resonances with masses as high as 2.3 GeV.

A search for baryon- and lepton-number violating decays of ΛΛ hyperons using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory

We present a search for ten baryon-number violating decay modes of ΛΛ hyperons using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. Nine of these decay modes result in a single meson and single lepton in the final state (Λ→mℓΛ\rightarrow m \ell) and conserve either the sum or the difference of baryon and lepton number (B±LB \pm L). The tenth decay mode (Λ→pˉπ+Λ\rightarrow \bar{p}π^+) represents a difference in baryon number of two units and no difference in lepton number. We observe no significant signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions of these reactions in the range (4−200)×10−7(4-200)\times 10^{-7} at the 90%90\% confidence level.

First Measurement of the Polarization Observable E in the p⃗(γ⃗,π+)n\vec p(\vec γ,π^+)n Reaction up to 2.25 GeV

First results from the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST) program are reported. The double-polarization observable E, for the reaction γ⃗p⃗→π+n\vec γ\vec p \to π^+n, has been measured using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam, with energies from 0.35 to 2.37 GeV. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. The data have been included in new multipole analyses resulting in updated nucleon resonance parameters. We report updated fits from the Bonn-Gatchina, Jülich, and SAID groups.

New Results from the Studies of the N(1440)1/2+N(1440)1/2^+, N(1520)3/2−N(1520)3/2^-, and Δ(1620)1/2−Δ(1620)1/2^- Resonances in Exclusive ep→e′p′π+π−ep \to e'p' π^+ π^- Electroproduction with the CLAS Detector

The transition helicity amplitudes from the proton ground state to the N(1440)1/2+N(1440)1/2^+, N(1520)3/2−N(1520)3/2^-, and Δ(1620)1/2−Δ(1620)1/2^- resonances (γvpN∗γ_vpN^* electrocouplings) were determined from the analysis of nine independent one-fold differential π+π−pπ^+ π^- p electroproduction cross sections off a proton target, taken with CLAS at photon virtualities 0.5 GeV2^2 <Q2<< Q^2 < 1.5 GeV2^2. The phenomenological reaction model employed for separation of the resonant and non-resonant contributions to this exclusive channel was further developed. The N(1440)1/2+N(1440)1/2^+, N(1520)3/2−N(1520)3/2^-, and Δ(1620)1/2−Δ(1620)1/2^- electrocouplings were obtained from the resonant amplitudes of charged double-pion electroproduction off the proton in the aforementioned area of photon virtualities for the first time. Consistent results on γvpN∗γ_vpN^* electrocouplings available from independent analyses of several WW-intervals with different non-resonant contributions offer clear evidence for the reliable extraction of these fundamental quantities. These studies also improved the knowledge on hadronic branching ratios for the N(1440)1/2+N(1440)1/2^+, N(1520)3/2−N(1520)3/2^-, and Δ(1620)1/2−Δ(1620)1/2^- decays to the πΔπΔ and ρNρN final states. These new results provide a substantial impact on the QCD-based approaches that describe the N∗N^* structure and demonstrate the capability to explore fundamental ingredients of the non-perturbative strong interaction that are behind the excited nucleon state formation.

Precise Determination of the Deuteron Spin Structure at Low to Moderate Q2Q^2 with CLAS and Extraction of the Neutron Contribution

We present the final results for the deuteron spin structure functions obtained from the full data set collected with Jefferson Lab's CLAS in 2000-2001. Polarized electrons with energies of 1.6, 2.5, 4.2 and 5.8 GeV were scattered from deuteron (15^{15}ND3_3) targets, dynamically polarized along the beam direction, and detected with CLAS. From the measured double spin asymmetry, the virtual photon absorption asymmetry A1dA_1^d and the polarized structure function g1dg_1^d were extracted over a wide kinematic range (0.05 GeV2<Q2<^2 < Q^2 < 5 GeV2^2 and 0.9 GeV <W<< W < 3 GeV). We use an unfolding procedure and a parametrization of the corresponding proton results to extract from these data the polarized structure functions A1nA_1^n and g1ng_1^n of the (bound) neutron, which are so far unknown in the resonance region, W<2W < 2 GeV. We compare our final results, including several moments of the deuteron and neutron spin structure functions, with various theoretical models and expectations as well as parametrizations of the world data. The unprecedented precision and dense kinematic coverage of these data can aid in future extractions of polarized parton distributions, tests of perturbative QCD predictions for the quark polarization at large xx, a better understanding of quark-hadron duality, and more precise values for higher-twist matrix elements in the framework of the Operator Product Expansion.

Dark matter search in a Beam-Dump eXperiment (BDX) at Jefferson Lab

MeV-GeV dark matter (DM) is theoretically well motivated but remarkably unexplored. This Letter of Intent presents the MeV-GeV DM discovery potential for a 1 m3^3 segmented plastic scintillator detector placed downstream of the beam-dump at one of the high intensity JLab experimental Halls, receiving up to 1022^{22} electrons-on-target (EOT) in a one-year period. This experiment (Beam-Dump eXperiment or BDX) is sensitive to DM-nucleon elastic scattering at the level of a thousand counts per year, with very low threshold recoil energies (∼\sim1 MeV), and limited only by reducible cosmogenic backgrounds. Sensitivity to DM-electron elastic scattering and/or inelastic DM would be below 10 counts per year after requiring all electromagnetic showers in the detector to exceed a few-hundred MeV, which dramatically reduces or altogether eliminates all backgrounds. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations are in progress to finalize the detector design and experimental set up. An existing 0.036 m3^3 prototype based on the same technology will be used to validate simulations with background rate estimates, driving the necessary R&\&D towards an optimized detector. The final detector design and experimental set up will be presented in a full proposal to be submitted to the next JLab PAC. A fully realized experiment would be sensitive to large regions of DM parameter space, exceeding the discovery potential of existing and planned experiments by two orders of magnitude in the MeV-GeV DM mass range.

Induced polarization of Λ(1116) in kaon electroproduction

We have measured the induced polarization of the Λ(1116)Λ(1116) in the reaction ep→e′K+Λep\rightarrow e'K^+Λ, detecting the scattered e′e' and K+K^+ in the final state along with the proton from the decay Λ→pπ−Λ\rightarrow pπ^-.The present study used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), which allowed for a large kinematic acceptance in invariant energy WW (1.6≤W≤2.71.6\leq W \leq 2.7 GeV) and covered the full range of the kaon production angle at an average momentum transfer Q2=1.90Q^2=1.90 GeV2^2.In this experiment a 5.50 GeV electron beam was incident upon an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. We have mapped out the WW and kaon production angle dependencies of the induced polarization and found striking differences from photoproduction data over most of the kinematic range studied. However, we also found that the induced polarization is essentially Q2Q^2 independent in our kinematic domain, suggesting that somewhere below the Q2Q^2 covered here there must be a strong Q2Q^2 dependence. Along with previously published photo- and electroproduction cross sections and polarization observables, these data are needed for the development of models, such as effective field theories, and as input to coupled-channel analyses that can provide evidence of previously unobserved ss-channel resonances.

Measurement of the structure function of the nearly free neutron using spectator tagging in inelastic 2^2H(e, e'p)X scattering with CLAS

Much less is known about neutron structure than that of the proton due to the absence of free neutron targets. Neutron information is usually extracted from data on nuclear targets such as deuterium, requiring corrections for nuclear binding and nucleon off-shell effects. These corrections are model dependent and have significant uncertainties, especially for large values of the Bjorken scaling variable x. The Barely Off-shell Nucleon Structure (BONuS) experiment at Jefferson Lab measured the inelastic electron deuteron scattering cross section, tagging spectator protons in coincidence with the scattered electrons. This method reduces nuclear binding uncertainties significantly and has allowed for the first time a (nearly) model independent extraction of the neutron structure function. A novel compact radial time projection chamber was built to detect protons with momentum between 70 and 150 MeV/c. For the extraction of the free neutron structure function F2nF_{2n}, spectator protons at backward angle and with momenta below 100 MeV/c were selected, ensuring that the scattering took place on a nearly free neutron. The scattered electrons were detected with Jefferson Lab's CLAS spectrometer. The extracted neutron structure function F2nF_{2n} and its ratio to the deuteron structure function F2dF_{2d} are presented in both the resonance and deep inelastic regions. The dependence of the cross section on the spectator proton momentum and angle is investigated, and tests of the spectator mechanism for different kinematics are performed. Our data set can be used to study neutron resonance excitations, test quark hadron duality in the neutron, develop more precise parametrizations of structure functions, as well as investigate binding effects (including possible mechanisms for the nuclear EMC effect) and provide a first glimpse of the asymptotic behavior of d/u as x goes to 1.

Momentum sharing in imbalanced Fermi systems

The atomic nucleus is composed of two different kinds of fermions, protons and neutrons. If the protons and neutrons did not interact, the Pauli exclusion principle would force the majority fermions (usually neutrons) to have a higher average momentum. Our high-energy electron scattering measurements using 12C, 27Al, 56Fe and 208Pb targets show that, even in heavy neutron-rich nuclei, short-range interactions between the fermions form correlated high-momentum neutron-proton pairs. Thus, in neutron-rich nuclei, protons have a greater probability than neutrons to have momentum greater than the Fermi momentum. This finding has implications ranging from nuclear few body systems to neutron stars and may also be observable experimentally in two-spin state, ultra-cold atomic gas systems.

Towards a resolution of the proton form factor problem: new electron and positron scattering data

There is a significant discrepancy between the values of the proton electric form factor, GEpG_E^p, extracted using unpolarized and polarized electron scattering. Calculations predict that small two-photon exchange (TPE) contributions can significantly affect the extraction of GEpG_E^p from the unpolarized electron-proton cross sections. We determined the TPE contribution by measuring the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections using a simultaneous, tertiary electron-positron beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target and detecting the scattered particles in the Jefferson Lab CLAS detector. This novel technique allowed us to cover a wide range in virtual photon polarization (ε\varepsilon) and momentum transfer (Q2Q^2) simultaneously, as well as to cancel luminosity-related systematic errors. The cross section ratio increases with decreasing ε\varepsilon at Q2=1.45 GeV2Q^2 = 1.45 \text{ GeV}^2. This measurement is consistent with the size of the form factor discrepancy at Q2≈1.75Q^2\approx 1.75 GeV2^2 and with hadronic calculations including nucleon and ΔΔ intermediate states, which have been shown to resolve the discrepancy up to 2−32-3 GeV2^2.

The differential cross sections for ωω and η′η' mesons become closer to the predicted uu-channel contribution at s>2.4\sqrt{s}>2.4 GeV. A bump structure in the s\sqrt{s} dependence of the differential cross sections for η′η' mesons was observed at s∼\sqrt{s}\sim2.35 GeV.

Cross sections for the γp→K∗+Λγp \to K^{*+} Λ and γp→K∗+Σ0γp \to K^{*+} Σ^{0} reactions measured at CLAS

The first high-statistics cross sections for the reactions γp→K∗+Λγp \to K^{*+} Λ and γp→K∗+Σ0γp \to K^{*+} Σ^0 were measured using the CLAS detector at photon energies between threshold and 3.9 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Differential cross sections are presented over the full range of the center-of-mass angles, θK∗+CMθ^{CM}_{K^{*+}}, and then fitted to Legendre polynomials to extract the total cross section. Results for the K∗+ΛK^{*+}Λ final state are compared with two different calculations in an isobar and a Regge model, respectively. Theoretical calculations significantly underestimate the K∗+ΛK^{*+} Λ total cross sections between 2.1 and 2.6 GeV, but are in better agreement with present data at higher photon energies.

Deep exclusive π+π^+ electroproduction off the proton at CLAS

The exclusive electroproduction of π+π^+ above the resonance region was studied using the CEBAF\rm{CEBAF} Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS\rm{CLAS}) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6 GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of CLAS\rm{CLAS}, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the γ∗p→nπ+γ^* p \to n π^+ process in 140 (Q2Q^2, xBx_B, tt) bins: 0.16<xB<0.580.16<x_B<0.58, 1.6 GeV2<^2<Q2Q^2<4.5<4.5 GeV2^2 and 0.1 GeV2<^2<−t-t<5.3<5.3 GeV2^2. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a few percent. Differential cross sections are compared to two theoretical models, based either on hadronic (Regge phenomenology) or on partonic (handbag diagram) degrees of freedom. Both can describe the gross features of the data reasonably well, but differ strongly in their ingredients. If the handbag approach can be validated in this kinematical region, our data contain the interesting potential to experimentally access transversity Generalized Parton Distributions.

Demonstration of a novel technique to measure two-photon exchange effects in elastic e±pe^\pm p scattering

The discrepancy between proton electromagnetic form factors extracted using unpolarized and polarized scattering data is believed to be a consequence of two-photon exchange (TPE) effects. However, the calculations of TPE corrections have significant model dependence, and there is limited direct experimental evidence for such corrections. We present the results of a new experimental technique for making direct e±pe^\pm p comparisons, which has the potential to make precise measurements over a broad range in Q2Q^2 and scattering angles. We use the Jefferson Lab electron beam and the Hall B photon tagger to generate a clean but untagged photon beam. The photon beam impinges on a converter foil to generate a mixed beam of electrons, positrons, and photons. A chicane is used to separate and recombine the electron and positron beams while the photon beam is stopped by a photon blocker. This provides a combined electron and positron beam, with energies from 0.5 to 3.2 GeV, which impinges on a liquid hydrogen target. The large acceptance CLAS detector is used to identify and reconstruct elastic scattering events, determining both the initial lepton energy and the sign of the scattered lepton. The data were collected in two days with a primary electron beam energy of only 3.3 GeV, limiting the data from this run to smaller values of Q2Q^2 and scattering angle. Nonetheless, this measurement yields a data sample for e±pe^\pm p with statistics comparable to those of the best previous measurements. We have shown that we can cleanly identify elastic scattering events and correct for the difference in acceptance for electron and positron scattering. The final ratio of positron to electron scattering: R=1.027±0.005±0.05R=1.027\pm0.005\pm0.05 for <Q2>=0.206<Q^2>=0.206 GeV2^2 and 0.830≤ε≤0.9430.830\leq ε\leq 0.943.

Search for K−ppK^-pp bound state via γd→K+π−Xγd \rightarrow K^+ π^-X reaction at Eγ=1.5−2.4E_γ=1.5-2.4 GeV

A search for K−ppK^-pp bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the γd→K+π−Xγd \rightarrow K^+ π^- \rm{X} reaction at Eγ_γ=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of K+π−K^+ π^- photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/c2c^2, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the K−ppK^-pp bound state production were determined to be 0.1−-0.7 μμ b (95% confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

Transverse Polarization of Σ+(1189)Σ^{+}(1189) in Photoproduction on a Hydrogen Target in CLAS

Experimental results on the Σ+(1189)Σ^+(1189) hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson laboratory are presented. The Σ+(1189)Σ^+(1189) was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction γ+p→KS0+Σ+(1189)γ+p\rightarrow K^{0}_{S} + Σ^+(1189) via the Σ+→pπ0Σ^{+} \to p π^{0} decay mode. The KS0K^{0}_S was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions with the π0π^0 identified in the missing mass of the detected pπ+π−pπ^+π^- final state. Experimental data were collected in the photon energy range EγE_γ = 1.0-3.5 GeV (s\sqrt{s} range 1.66-2.73 GeV). We observe a large negative polarization of up to 95%. As the mechanism of transverse polarization of hyperons produced in unpolarized photoproduction experiments is still not well understood, these results will help to distinguish between different theoretical models on hyperon production and provide valuable information for the searches of missing baryon resonances.

Evidence for the Onset of Color Transparency in ρ0ρ^0 Electroproduction off Nuclei

We have measured the nuclear transparency of the incoherent diffractive A(e,e′ρ0)A(e,e'ρ^0) process in 12^{12}C and 56^{56}Fe targets relative to 2^2H using a 5 GeV electron beam. The nuclear transparency, the ratio of the produced ρ0ρ^0's on a nucleus relative to deuterium, which is sensitive to ρAρA interaction, was studied as function of the coherence length (lcl_c), a lifetime of the hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon, and the four-momentum transfer squared (Q2Q^2). While the transparency for both 12^{12}C and 56^{56}Fe showed no lcl_c dependence, a significant Q2Q^2 dependence was measured, which is consistent with calculations that included the color transparency effects.

Measurement of Exclusive π0π^0 Electroproduction Structure Functions and their Relationship to Transversity GPDs

Exclusive π0π^0 electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values in Q2Q^2, xBx_B, tt, and ϕπϕ_π, in the Q2Q^2 range from 1.0 to 4.6 GeV2^2,\ −t-t up to 2 GeV2^2, and xBx_B from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions σT+εσL,σTTσ_T +εσ_L, σ_{TT} and σLTσ_{LT} were extracted as functions of tt for each of 17 combinations of Q2Q^2 and xBx_B. The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity GPDs. Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates σT+εσLσ_T +εσ_L and fails to account for σTTσ_{TT} and σLTσ_{LT}, while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity flip and helicity non-flip processes. The results confirm that exclusive π0π^0 electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs.

Measurement of the neutron F2 structure function via spectator tagging with CLAS

We report on the first measurement of the F2 structure function of the neutron from semi-inclusive scattering of electrons from deuterium, with low-momentum protons detected in the backward hemisphere. Restricting the momentum of the spectator protons to < 100 MeV and their angles to < 100 degrees relative to the momentum transfer allows an interpretation of the process in terms of scattering from nearly on-shell neutrons. The F2n data collected cover the nucleon resonance and deep-inelastic regions over a wide range of Bjorken x for 0.65 < Q2 < 4.52 GeV2, with uncertainties from nuclear corrections estimated to be less than a few percent. These measurements provide the first determination of the neutron to proton structure function ratio F2n/F2p at 0.2 < x < 0.8 with little uncertainty due to nuclear effects.

Near Threshold Neutral Pion Electroproduction at High Momentum Transfers and Generalized Form Factors

We report the measurement of near threshold neutral pion electroproduction cross sections and the extraction of the associated structure functions on the proton in the kinematic range Q2Q^2 from 2 to 4.5 GeV2^2 and WW from 1.08 to 1.16 GeV. These measurements allow us to access the dominant pion-nucleon s-wave multipoles E0+E_{0+} and S0+S_{0+} in the near-threshold region. In the light-cone sum-rule framework (LCSR), these multipoles are related to the generalized form factors G1π0p(Q2)G_1^{π^0 p}(Q^2) and G2π0p(Q2)G_2^{π^0 p}(Q^2). The data are compared to these generalized form factors and the results for G1π0p(Q2)G_1^{π^0 p}(Q^2) are found to be in good agreement with the LCSR predictions, but the level of agreement with G2π0p(Q2)G_2^{π^0 p}(Q^2) is poor.

Branching Ratio of the Electromagnetic Decay of the Σ+(1385)Σ^{+}(1385)

The CLAS detector was used to obtain the first ever measurement of the electromagnetic decay of the Σ∗+(1385)Σ^{*+}(1385) from the reaction γp→K0Σ∗+(1385)γp \to K^0 Σ^{*+}(1385). A real photon beam with a maximum energy of 3.8 GeV was incident on a liquid-hydrogen target, resulting in the photoproduction of the kaon and Σ∗Σ^* hyperon. Kinematic fitting was used to separate the reaction channel from the background processes. The fitting algorithm exploited a new method to kinematically fit neutrons in the CLAS detector, leading to the partial width measurement of 250.0±56.9(stat)−41.2+34.3(sys)250.0\pm56.9(stat)^{+34.3}_{-41.2}(sys) keV. A U-spin symmetry test using the SU(3) flavor-multiplet representation yields predictions for the Σ∗+(1385)→Σ+γΣ^{*+}(1385)\toΣ^{+}γ and Σ∗0(1385)→ΛγΣ^{*0}(1385)\toΛγ partial widths that agree with the experimental measurements.

Electromagnetic Decay of the Σ0(1385)Σ^{0}(1385) to ΛγΛγ

The electromagnetic decay Σ0(1385)→ΛγΣ^0(1385) \to Λγ was studied using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. A real photon beam with a maximum energy of 3.8 GeV was incident on a proton target, producing an exclusive final state of K+Σ∗0K^+Σ^{*0}. We report the decay widths ratio Σ0(1385)→ΛγΣ^0(1385) \to Λγ/ Σ0(1385)→Λπ0Σ^0(1385) \to Λπ^0 = 1.42±0.12(stat)−0.07+0.11(sys)1.42 \pm 0.12(\text{stat})_{-0.07}^{+0.11}(\text{sys})%. This ratio is larger than most theoretical predictions by factors ranging from 1.5-3, but is consistent with the only other experimental measurement. From the reported ratio we calculate the partial width and electromagnetic transition magnetic moment for Σ0(1385)→ΛγΣ^0(1385) \to Λγ.

Measurement of the nuclear multiplicity ratio for Ks0K^0_s hadronization at CLAS

The influence of cold nuclear matter on lepto-production of hadrons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering is measured using the CLAS detector in Hall B at Jefferson Lab and a 5.014 GeV electron beam. We report the Ks0K_s^0 multiplicity ratios for targets of C, Fe, and Pb relative to deuterium as a function of the fractional virtual photon energy zz transferred to the Ks0K_s^0 and the transverse momentum squared pT2p_{T}^2 of the Ks0K_s^0. We find that the multiplicity ratios for Ks0K^0_s are reduced in the nuclear medium at high zz and low pT2p_{T}^2, with a trend for the Ks0K^0_s transverse momentum to be broadened in the nucleus for large pT2p_{T}^2.

Precise Measurements of Beam Spin Asymmetries in Semi-Inclusive π0π^0 production

We present studies of single-spin asymmetries for neutral pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 5.776 GeV polarized electrons from an unpolarized hydrogen target, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. A substantial sin⁡ϕh\sin ϕ_h amplitude has been measured in the distribution of the cross section asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal angle ϕhϕ_h of the produced neutral pion. The dependence of this amplitude on Bjorken xx and on the pion transverse momentum is extracted with significantly higher precision than previous data and is compared to model calculations.

Electromagnetic production of hyperon resonances

The study of hyperon resonances has entered a new era of precision with advent of high-statistics photoproduction data from the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. These data have multi-particle final states, allowing clean identification of exclusive reactions associated with strange mesons and baryons. Examples of physics results are: evidence for isospin interference in the decay of the Λ(1405)Λ(1405) resonance; a strong suggestion of meson cloud effects in the structure of the Σ(1385)Σ(1385) resonance; data from K∗K^* photoproduction that will test the existence of the purported K0(800)K_0(800) meson. Properties of other hyperon resonances will also be studied in the near future.

Measurement of Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction with a Longitudinally Polarized Target

Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero sin⁡2ϕ\sin2ϕ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. Measurement of Spin-Density Matrix Elements for ϕϕ-Meson Photoproduction from Protons and Deuterons Near Threshold

The LEPS/SPring-8 experiment made a comprehensive measurement of the spin-density matrix elements for γp→ϕpγp \to ϕp, γd→ϕpnγd \to ϕp n and γd→ϕdγd \to ϕd at forward production angles. A linearly polarized photon beam at EγE_γ=1.6-2.4 GeV was used for the production of ϕϕ mesons. The natural-parity Pomeron exchange processes remains dominant nearthreshold. The unnatural-parity processes of pseudoscalar exchange is visible in the production from nucleons but is greatly reduced in the coherent production from deuterons. There is no strong EγE_γ-dependence, but some dependence on momentum-transfer. A small but finite value of the spin-density matrix elements reflecting helicity-nonconserving amplitudes in the tt-channel is observed.

Measurement of the incoherent γd→ϕpnγd \to ϕp n photoproduction near threshold

We report measurements of differential cross sections and decay asymmetries of incoherent ϕϕ-meson photoproduction from the deuteron at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at \Eg=1.5-2.4 GeV. The nuclear transparency ratio for the deuteron shows a large suppression, and is consistent with the A-dependence of the ratio observed in a previous measurement with nuclear targets. The reduction for the deuteron cannot be adequately explained in term of isospin asymmetry. The present results suggest the need of refining our understanding of the ϕϕ-N interaction within a nucleus.

Near-threshold Lambda(1520) production by the gamma p -> K+Lambda(1520) reaction at forward K+ angles

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> K+ Lambda(1520) reaction have been measured with linearly polarized photon beams at energies from the threshold to 2.4 GeV at 0.6<cos(theta)<1. A new bump structure was found at W=2.11 GeV in the cross sections. The bump is not well reproduced by theoretical calculations introducing a nucleon resonance with J<=3/2. This result suggests that the bump might be produced by a nucleon resonance possibly with J>=5/2 or by a new reaction process, for example an interference effect with the phi photoproduction having a similar bump structure in the cross sections.

Near-threshold Photoproduction of Phi Mesons from Deuterium

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section on ϕϕ-meson photoproduction from deuterium near the production threshold for a proton using the CLAS detector and a tagged-photon beam in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was carried out by a triple coincidence detection of a proton, K+K^+ and K−K^- near the theoretical production threshold of 1.57 GeV. The extracted differential cross sections dσdt\frac{dσ}{dt} for the initial photon energy from 1.65-1.75 GeV are consistent with predictions based on a quasifree mechanism. This experiment establishes a baseline for a future experimental search for an exotic ϕϕ-N bound state from heavier nuclear targets utilizing subthreshold/near-threshold production of ϕϕ mesons.

Tensor Correlations Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n

We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, ptotp_{tot}. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low ptotp_{tot} and rises to approximately 0.5 at large ptotp_{tot}. This shows the dominance of tensor over central correlations at this relative momentum.

Cross Sections for the γp→K∗0Σ+γp \to K^{*0}Σ^+ Reaction at Eγ=1.7−3.0E_γ= 1.7 - 3.0 GeV

Differential cross sections for the reaction γp→K∗0Σ+γp \to K^{*0} Σ^+ are presented at nine bins in photon energy in the range from 1.7 to 3.0 GeV. The \kstar was detected by its decay products, K+π−K^+π^-, in the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. These data are the first \kstar photoproduction cross sections ever published over a broad range of angles. Comparison with a theoretical model based on the vector and tensor K∗K^*-quark couplings shows good agreement with the data in general, after adjusting the model's two parameters in a fit to our data. Disagreement between the data at forward angles and the global angle-energy fit to the model suggests that the role of scalar κκ meson exchange in tt-channel diagrams should be investigated.

First measurement of coherent ϕϕ-meson photoproduction on deuteron at low energies

The cross section and decay angular distributions for the coherent ϕmeson photoproduction on the deuteron have been measured for the first time up to a squared four-momentum transfer t =(p_γ-p_ϕ)^2 =-2 GeV^2/c^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cross sections are compared with predictions from a re-scattering model. In a framework of vector meson dominance, the data are consistent with the total ϕ-N cross section σ_{ϕN} at about 10 mb. If vector meson dominance is violated, a larger σ_{ϕN} is possible by introducing larger t-slope for the ϕN \to ϕN process than that for the γN \to ϕN process. The decay angular distributions of the ϕare consistent with helicity conservation.

Search for the Θ+Θ^+ pentaquark in the reaction γd→pK−K+nγd \to p K^- K^+ n

A search for the \thp in the reaction γd→pK−K+nγd \to pK^-K^+n was completed using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A study of the same reaction, published earlier, reported the observation of a narrow \thp resonance. The present experiment, with more than 30 times the integrated luminosity of our earlier measurement, does not show any evidence for a narrow pentaquark resonance. The angle-integrated upper limit on \thp production in the mass range of 1.52 to 1.56 GeV/c2^2 for the γd→pK−Θ+γd \to pK^-Θ^+ reaction is 0.3 nb (95% CL). This upper limit depends on assumptions made for the mass and angular distribution of \thp production. Using \lamstar production as an empirical measure of rescattering in the deuteron, the cross section upper limit for the elementary γn→K−Θ+γn \to K^-Θ^+ reaction is estimated to be a factor of 10 higher, {\it i.e.}, ∼3\sim 3 nb (95% CL).

An Experimental Review of the Θ+Θ^+ Pentaquark

Evidence for the Θ+Θ^+ pentaquark is still sketchy at the present time. This state, if it exists, has a small width and consequently a small production cross section. No single experiment has overwhelming evidence for the Θ+Θ^+ and some non-observations of the Θ+Θ^+ are difficult to understand unless this exotic baryon also has an exotic production mechanism. However, new data from the LEPS and CLAS collaborations with higher statistics are on the way, which will likely resolve the question of whether the Θ+Θ^+ exists.
