A theoretical model for parallel SQUID arrays with fluxoid focussing

We have developed a comprehensive theoretical model for predicting the magnetic field response of a parallel SQUID array in the voltage state. The model predictions are compared with our experimental data from a parallel SQUID array made of a YBCO thin-film patterned into wide tracks, busbars and leads, with eleven step-edge Josephson junctions. Our theoretical model uses the Josephson equations for resistively shunted junctions as well as the second Ginzburg-Landau equation to derive a system of coupled first-order nonlinear differential equations to describe the time-evolution of the Josephson junction phase differences which includes Johnson noise. Employing the second London equation and Biot-Savart's law, the supercurrent density distribution is calculated, using the stream function approach, which leads to a 2D second-order linear Fredholm integro-differential equation for the stream function with time-dependent boundary conditions. The novelty of the model is that it calculates the stream function everywhere in the thin-film structure to determine during the time-evolution the fluxoids for each SQUID array hole. Our numerical model calculations are compared with our experimental data and predict the bias-current versus voltage and the voltage versus magnetic field response with unprecedented accuracy. The model elucidates the importance to fully take Meissner shielding and current crowding into account in order to properly describe fluxoid focussing and bias-current injection. Furthermore, our model illustrates the failure of the simple lumped-element approach to describe a parallel SQUID array with a wide thin-film structure.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Anisotropic Frustrated Spin-chain Compound Linarite PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$

We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities using DMRG and TMRG approaches. Within the framework of a purely 1D isotropic model Hamiltonian, only a qualitative agreement between theory and the experimental data can be achieved. Instead, it is demonstrated that a significant symmetric anisotropic exchange of about 10% is necessary to account for the basic experimental observations, including the 3D saturation field, and which in turn might stabilize a triatic (three-magnon) multipolar phase.

Anisotropic magnetic behavior of GdBa_2Cu_3O_{6+y} single crystals

Magnetic properties of high-quality Al-free nonsuperconducting GdBa_2Cu_3O_{6+y} single crystals grown by flux method have been studied. The magnetic anisotropy below the Néel temperature T_N~2.3K corresponds to the direction of Gd^{3+} magnetic moments along the tetragonal c-axis. At T < T_N clear indications of spin-flop transitions for H||c have been observed on magnetization curves at H_{sf}~10kOe. Magnetic phase diagrams have been obtained for H||c as well as for H||ab. A pronounced anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility (unexpected for Gd-based compounds) has been found above T_N.

Comparative Study of Dense Bulk MgB$_2$ Materials Prepared by Different Methods

We report on the results of a comparative investigation of highly dense bulk MgB$_2$ samples prepared by three methods: (i) hot deformation; (ii) high pressure sintering; and (iii) mechanical alloying of Mg and B powders with subsequent hot compaction. All types of samples were studied by ac-susceptibility, dc-magnetization and resistivity measurements in magnetic fields up to $μ_0H=160$ kOe. A small but distinct anisotropy of the upper critical field $H_{c2}^{a,b}/H_{c2}^{c}\sim1.2$ connected with some texture of MgB$_2$ grains was found for the hot deformed samples. The samples prepared by high pressure sintering as well as by mechanical alloying show improved superconducting properties, including high upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ ($μ_0H_{c2}(0)\sim23$ T), irreversibility fields $H_{irr}$ which are strongly shifted towards higher values $H_{irr}(T)\sim0.8H_{c2}(T)$ and high critical current $J_c$ ($J_c=10^5$ A/cm$^2$ at 20 K and 1 T).

The upper critical field in superconducting MgB_2

The upper critical field Hc2(T) of sintered pellets of the recently discovered MgB_2 superconductor was investigated in magnetic fields up to 16 T. The upper critical field of the major fraction of the investigated sample was determined from ac susceptibility and resistance data and was found to increase up to Hc2(0) = 13 T at T = 0 corresponding to a coherence length of 5.0 nm. A small fraction of the sample exhibits higher upper critical fields which were measured both resistively and by dc magnetization measurements. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, Hc2(T), shows a positive curvature near Tc and at intermediate temperatures. This positive curvature of Hc2(T) is similar to that found for the borocarbides YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C indicating that MgB_2 is in the clean limit.

PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}: Superconducting or Anomalously Magnetic?

In PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y} (Pr123) single crystals grown by the flux method the kink in the magnetic susceptibility chi_{ab}(T), connected with AFM ordering of Pr, disappears after field cooling (FC) in a field H||ab-plane whereas the kink in chi_c(T) remains unchanged after FC in H||c-axis. This seems to be connected with the coupling between the Pr and Cu(2) sublattices. The Curie constant C determined from the data reported for superconducting Pr123 crystals grown by traveling-solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method (Zou et al, Phys. Rev. Lett., 80, 1074 (1998)) is about one half of that for our flux crystals. Thus, the concentration of Pr in TSFZ crystal seems to be about one half of the nominal for Pr123. Therefore, superconductivity in TSFZ samples is connected most probably with the partial substitution of Pr by nonmagnetic Ba.
