Determination of the argon spectral function from (e,e'p) data

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has measured the (e,e′p)(e, e'p) cross section in parallel kinematics using a natural argon target. Here, we report the full results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV, and spanning the missing momentum and missing energy range 15≲pm≲30015 \lesssim p_m \lesssim 300 MeV/c and 12≲Em≲8012 \lesssim E_m \lesssim 80 MeV. The reduced cross section, determined as a function of pmp_m and EmE_m with ≈\approx4\% accuracy, has been fitted using the results of Monte Carlo simulations involving a model spectral function and including the effects of final state interactions. The overall agreement between data and simulations turns out to be quite satisfactory (χ2χ^2/n.d.o.f.=1.9). The resulting spectral function will provide valuable new information, needed for the interpretation of neutrino interactions in liquid argon detectors.

Measurement of the Parity-Odd Angular Distribution of Gamma Rays From Polarized Neutron Capture on 35^{35}Cl

We report a measurement of two energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions from polarized slow neutron capture on the 35{}^{35}Cl nucleus, one parity-odd correlation proportional to sn⃗⋅kγ⃗\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_γ} and one parity-even correlation proportional to sn⃗⋅kn⃗×kγ⃗\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{n}} \times \vec{k_γ}. A parity violating asymmetry can appear in this reaction due to the weak nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction which mixes opposite parity S and P-wave levels in the excited compound 36^{36}Cl nucleus formed upon slow neutron capture. If parity-violating (PV) and parity-conserving (PC) terms both exist, the measured differential cross section can be related to them via dσdΩ∝1+Aγ,PVcos⁡θ+Aγ,PCsin⁡θ\frac{dσ}{dΩ}\propto1+A_{γ, PV}\cosθ+A_{γ,PC}\sinθ. The PV and PC asymmetries for energy-weighted gamma cascade angular distributions for polarized slow neutron capture on 35^{35}Cl averaged over the neutron energies from 2.27~meV to 9.53~meV were measured to be Aγ,PV=(−23.9±0.7)×10−6A_{γ,PV}=(-23.9\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6} and Aγ,PC=(0.1±0.7)×10−6A_{γ,PC}=(0.1\pm0.7)\times 10^{-6}. These results are consistent with previous experimental results. Systematic errors were quantified and shown to be small compared to the statistical error. These asymmetries in the angular distributions of the gamma rays emitted from the capture of polarized neutrons in 35^{35}Cl were used to verify the operation and data analysis procedures for the NPDGamma experiment which measured the parity-odd asymmetry in the angular distribution of gammas from polarized slow neutron capture on protons.

Measurement of the Ar(e,e′^\prime p) and Ti(e,e′^\prime p) cross sections in Jefferson Lab Hall A

The E12-14-012 experiment, performed in Jefferson Lab Hall A, has collected exclusive electron-scattering data (e,e′^\primep) in parallel kinematics using natural argon and natural titanium targets. Here, we report the first results of the analysis of the data set corresponding to beam energy of 2,222 MeV, electron scattering angle 21.5 deg, and proton emission angle -50 deg. The differential cross sections, measured with ∼\sim4% uncertainty, have been studied as a function of missing energy and missing momentum, and compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulations, obtained from a model based on the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation.

Ruling out color transparency in quasi-elastic 12^{12}C(e,e'p) up to Q2Q^2 of 14.2 (GeV/c)2^2

Quasielastic 12^{12}C(e,e′p)(e,e'p) scattering was measured at space-like 4-momentum transfer squared Q2Q^2~=~8, 9.4, 11.4, and 14.2 (GeV/c)2^2, the highest ever achieved to date. Nuclear transparency for this reaction was extracted by comparing the measured yield to that expected from a plane-wave impulse approximation calculation without any final state interactions. The measured transparency was consistent with no Q2Q^2 dependence, up to proton momenta of 8.5~GeV/c, ruling out the quantum chromodynamics effect of color transparency at the measured Q2Q^2 scales in exclusive (e,e′p)(e,e'p) reactions. These results impose strict constraints on models of color transparency for protons.

Probing few-body nuclear dynamics via 3H and 3He (e,e'p)pn cross-section measurements

We report the first measurement of the \eep three-body breakup reaction cross sections in helium-3 (3^3He) and tritium (3^3H) at large momentum transfer (⟨Q2⟩≈1.9\langle Q^2 \rangle \approx 1.9 (GeV/c)2^2) and xB>1x_B>1 kinematics, where the cross section should be sensitive to quasielastic (QE) scattering from single nucleons. The data cover missing momenta 40≤pmiss≤50040 \le p_{miss} \le 500 MeV/c that, in the QE limit with no rescattering, equals the initial momentum of the probed nucleon. The measured cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Overall good agreement, within ±20%\pm20\%, is observed between data and calculations for the full pmissp_{miss} range for 3^3H and for 100≤pmiss≤350100 \le p_{miss} \le 350 MeV/c for 3^3He. Including the effects of rescattering of the outgoing nucleon improves agreement with the data at pmiss>250p_{miss} > 250 MeV/c and suggests contributions from charge-exchange (SCX) rescattering. The isoscalar sum of 3^3He plus 3^3H, which is largely insensitive to SCX, is described by calculations to within the accuracy of the data over the entire pmissp_{miss} range. This validates current models of the ground state of the three-nucleon system up to very high initial nucleon momenta of 500500 MeV/c.

New measurement of the scattering cross section of slow neutrons on liquid parahydrogen from neutron transmission

Liquid hydrogen is a dense Bose fluid whose equilibrium properties are both calculable from first principles using various theoretical approaches and of interest for the understanding of a wide range of questions in many body physics. Unfortunately, the pair correlation function g(r)g(r) inferred from neutron scattering measurements of the differential cross section dσdΩdσ\over dΩ from different measurements reported in the literature are inconsistent. We have measured the energy dependence of the total cross section and the scattering cross section for slow neutrons with energies between 0.43~meV and 16.1~meV on liquid hydrogen at 15.6~K (which is dominated by the parahydrogen component) using neutron transmission measurements on the hydrogen target of the NPDGamma collaboration at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The relationship between the neutron transmission measurement we perform and the total cross section is unambiguous, and the energy range accesses length scales where the pair correlation function is rapidly varying. At 1~meV our measurement is a factor of 3 below the data from previous work. We present evidence that these previous measurements of the hydrogen cross section, which assumed that the equilibrium value for the ratio of orthohydrogen and parahydrogen has been reached in the target liquid, were in fact contaminated with an extra non-equilibrium component of orthohydrogen. Liquid parahydrogen is also a widely-used neutron moderator medium, and an accurate knowledge of its slow neutron cross section is essential for the design and optimization of intense slow neutron sources. We describe our measurements and compare them with previous work.
