Magnetic Properties of GeNi$_{2-x}$Mg$_{x}$O$_{4}$ Under High Pressure and Magnetic Dilution

The effects of magnetic dilution and applied pressure on frustrated spinel Ni$_{2-x}$Mg$_{x}$GeO$_{4}$ (0 $\leq x \leq 1.0$) are analyzed using specific heat, AC and DC magnetization and x-ray diffraction. The parent compound has two closely spaced antiferromagnetic transitions $T_{\text{N1}}=12.0$ K (kagomé planes) and $T_{\text{N2}}=11.4$ K (triangular planes). In the dilution range tested, the low temperature magnetic state takes three forms: antiferromagnetic ($0 \leq x \leq 0.05$), ill-defined ($x=0.10$ and 0.15), and spin glass ($0.30 \leq x \leq 1.0$). The AFM region shows an extreme vulnerability to dilution with a percolation threshold of $p_{\text{c1}}=0.74 \pm 0.04$ and $p_{\text{c2}}=0.65 \pm 0.05$ for the kagomé and triangular planes respectively, which are much larger than expected for 3D systems. We suggest that this behavior is possibly due to coupling between the kagomé and triangular spins forming a 'network of networks' (NON). Thermal expansion data on parent NGO indicates a field dependent lattice contraction during ordering events. Furthermore, there is a transition from contraction to expansion in an applied field of 6 T in the kagomé planes. For dilution levels $x \geq 0.30$, the system becomes a spin glass with canonical behavior. Specific heat results suggest that the triangular spins become disordered with increasing Mg$^{2+}$ substitution followed by the onset of glassiness in the kagomé planes. Furthermore, there appears to be a dilution driven shift from 3 dimensional to 2 dimensional behavior as the low temperature magnetic heat capacity scales as $T^{2}$ in the spin glass state.

Characterization of the Spin-1/2 Linear-Chain Ferromagnet CuAs$_2$O$_4$

The magnetic and lattice properties of the $S$=1/2 quantum-spin-chain ferromagnet, CuAs$_2$O$_4$, mineral name trippkeite, were investigated. The crystal structure of CuAs$_2$O$_4$ is characterized by the presence of corrugated CuO$_2$ ribbon chains. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electron paramagnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopy were performed. Our experiments conclusively show that a ferromagnetic transition occurs at $\sim$7.4 K. $\textit{Ab initio}$ DFT calculations reveal dominant ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and weaker antiferromagnetic next- nearest-neighbor spin exchange interactions along the ribbon chains. The ratio of $J_{\rm nn}$/$J_{\rm nnn}$ is near -4, placing CuAs$_2$O$_4$ in close proximity to a quantum critical point in the $J_{\rm nn}$ - $J_{\rm nnn}$ phase diagram. TMRG simulations used to analyze the magnetic susceptibility confirm this ratio. Single-crystal magnetization measurements indicate that a magnetic anisotropy forces the Cu$^{2+}$ spins to lie in an easy plane perpendicular to the $c$-axis. An analysis of the field and temperature dependent magnetization by modified Arrott plots reveals a 3d-XY critical behavior. Lattice perturbations induced by quasi-hydrostatic pressure and temperature were mapped via magnetization and Raman spectroscopy.

Lattice and polarizability mediated spin activity in EuTiO_3

EuTiO_3 is shown to exhibit novel strong spin-charge-lattice coupling deep in the paramagnetic phase. Its existence is evidenced by an, until now, unknown response of the paramagnetic susceptibility at temperatures exceeding the structural phase transition temperature T_S = 282K. The "extra" features in the susceptibility follow the rotational soft zone boundary mode temperature dependence above and below T_S. The theoretical modeling consistently reproduces this behavior and provides reasoning for the stabilization of the soft optic mode other than quantum fluctuations.

Nonlinear pressure dependence of T_N in almost multiferroic EuTiO_3

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition temperature T_N of EuTiO_3 has been studied as a function of pressure p. The data reveal a nonlinear dependence of T_N on p with T_N increasing with increasing pressure. The exchange interactions exhibit an analogous dependence on p as T_N (if the absolute value of the nearest neighbor interaction is considered) and there is evidence that the AFM transition is robust with increasing pressure. The corresponding Weiss temperature Θ_W remains anomalous since it always exhibits positive values. The data are analyzed within the Bloch power law model and provide excellent agreement with experiment.
