Asymptotic normality of the likelihood moment estimators for a stationary linear process with heavy-tailed innovations

A variety of estimators for the parameters of the Generalized Pareto distribution, the approximating distribution for excesses over a high threshold, have been proposed, always assuming the underlying data to be independent. We recently proved that the likelihood moment estimators are consistent estimators for the parameters of the Generalized Pareto distribution for the case where the underlying data arises from a (stationary) linear process with heavy-tailed innovations. In this paper we derive the bivariate asymptotic normality under some additional assumptions and give an explicit example on how to check these conditions by using asymptotic expansions.

On consistency of the likelihood moment estimators for a linear process with regularly varying innovations

In 1975 James Pickands III showed that the excesses over a high threshold are approximatly Generalized Pareto distributed. Since then, a variety of estimators for the parameters of this cdf have been studied, but always assuming the underlying data to be independent. In this paper we consider the special case where the underlying data arises from a linear process with regularly varying (i.e. heavy-tailed) innovations. Using this setup, we then show that the likelihood moment estimators introduced by Zhang (2007) are consistent estimators for the parameters of the Generalized Pareto distribution.

A nonparametric urn-based approach to interacting failing systems with an application to credit risk modeling

In this paper we propose a new nonparametric approach to interacting failing systems (FS), that is systems whose probability of failure is not negligible in a fixed time horizon, a typical example being firms and financial bonds. The main purpose when studying a FS is to calculate the probability of default and the distribution of the number of failures that may occur during the observation period. A model used to study a failing system is defined default model. In particular, we present a general recursive model constructed by the means of inter- acting urns. After introducing the theoretical model and its properties we show a first application to credit risk modeling, showing how to assess the idiosyncratic probability of default of an obligor and the joint probability of failure of a set of obligors in a portfolio of risks, that are divided into reliability classes.

Extreme shock models: an alternative perspective

Extreme shock models have been introduced in Gut and Hüsler (1999) to study systems that at random times are subject to shock of random magnitude. These systems break down when some shock overcomes a given resistance level. In this paper we propose an alternative approach to extreme shock models using reinforced urn processes. As a consequence of this we are able to look at the same problem under a Bayesian nonparametric perspective, providing the predictive distribution of systems' defaults.

Generalized extreme shock models with a possibly increasing threshold

We propose a generalized extreme shock model with a possibly increasing failure threshold. While standard models assume that the crucial threshold for the system may only decrease over time, because of weakening shocks and obsolescence, we assume that, especially at the beginning of the system's life, some strengthening shocks may increase the system tolerance to large shock. This is for example the case of turbines' running-in in the field of engineering. On the basis of parametric assumptions, we provide theoretical results and derive some exact and asymptotic univariate and multivariate distributions for the model. In the last part of the paper we show how to link this new model to some nonparametric approaches proposed in the literature.
