Low Complexity Trellis-Coded Quantization in Versatile Video Coding

The forthcoming Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard adopts the trellis-coded quantization, which leverages the delicate trellis graph to map the quantization candidates within one block into the optimal path. Despite the high compression efficiency, the complex trellis search with soft decision quantization may hinder the applications due to high complexity and low throughput capacity. To reduce the complexity, in this paper, we propose a low complexity trellis-coded quantization scheme in a scientifically sound way with theoretical modeling of the rate and distortion. As such, the trellis departure point can be adaptively adjusted, and unnecessarily visited branches are accordingly pruned, leading to the shrink of total trellis stages and simplification of transition branches. Extensive experimental results on the VVC test model show that the proposed scheme is effective in reducing the encoding complexity by 11% and 5% with all intra and random access configurations, respectively, at the cost of only 0.11% and 0.05% BD-Rate increase. Meanwhile, on average 24% and 27% quantization time savings can be achieved under all intra and random access configurations. Due to the excellent performance, the VVC test model has adopted one implementation of the proposed scheme.

Spin-Orbit Coupling and Spin Textures in Optical Superlattices

We proposed and demonstrated a new approach for realizing spin orbit coupling with ultracold atoms. We use orbital levels in a double well potential as pseudospin states. Two-photon Raman transitions between left and right wells induce spin-orbit coupling. This scheme does not require near resonant light, features adjustable interactions by shaping the double well potential, and does not depend on special properties of the atoms. A pseudospinor Bose-Einstein condensate spontaneously acquires an antiferromagnetic pseudospin texture which breaks the lattice symmetry similar to a supersolid.

Preventing and Reversing Vacuum-Induced Optical Losses in High-Finesse Tantalum (V) Oxide Mirror Coatings

We study the vacuum-induced degradation of high-finesse optical cavities with mirror coatings composed of SiO$_2$-Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$ dielectric stacks, and present methods to protect these coatings and to recover their initial quality factor. For separate coatings with reflectivities centered at 370 nm and 422 nm, a vacuum-induced continuous increase in optical loss occurs if the surface-layer coating is made of Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$, while it does not occur if it is made of SiO$_2$. The incurred optical loss can be reversed by filling the vacuum chamber with oxygen at atmospheric pressure, and the recovery rate can be strongly accelerated by continuous laser illumination at 422 nm. Both the degradation and the recovery processes depend strongly on temperature. We find that a 1 nm-thick layer of SiO$_2$ passivating the Ta$_{2}$O$_{5}$ surface layer is sufficient to reduce the degradation rate by more than a factor of 10, strongly supporting surface oxygen depletion as the primary degradation mechanism.
