Ion Optics for quasi-free (p,pα)(p,pα) reactions with Grand Raiden Spectrometer

The quasi-free (p,pα)(p,pα) reaction is a powerful tool to probe preformed αα clusters in nuclei, but it requires accurate reconstruction of both momentum and scattering angles at the reaction point. In this work, ion-optical analysis for (p,pα)(p,pα) measurements with the Grand Raiden spectrometer is presented. An under-focus optical setting was adopted to preserve sensitivity to the vertical scattering angle while maintaining high momentum resolution. The focal-plane geometry was determined independently as a purely geometrical reference. Momentum calibration was performed using elastic scattering of 206^{206}Pb(p,p)(p,p) at a fixed spectrometer angle. Scattering angles were reconstructed using ion-optical relations, and residual higher-order effects were corrected by a multidimensional fit. The dominant contributions to the reconstruction were found to arise from terms up to third order within the experimental acceptance. This ion-optical framework enables consistent event-by-event reconstruction of the reaction kinematics and provides a reliable basis for quasi-free (p,pα)(p,pα) analyses.

αα knockout reaction as a new probe for αα formation in αα-decay nuclei

The αα-decay phenomennon has been studied for more than a century but the mechanism of the αα particle formation and its tunneling process have not yet been fully understood. As an alternative to the αα-decay lifetime measurement, we propose the proton-induced αα knockout reaction, (pp,pαpα), as a new probe for the surface αα formation probability of αα-decay nuclei. The 210,212^{210,212}Po(pp,pαpα)206,208^{206,208}Pb reaction is described by the distorted-wave impulse approximation framework. It shows that the 212^{212}Po/210^{210}Po ratio of the αα knockout cross sections agrees with that of the surface αα formation probabilities determined by lifetime measurements. The result implies that the (pp,pαpα) cross section is a direct probe for the surface αα formation probability, which is an essential quantity to lead us to a complete understanding of the αα-decay phenomenon.

Two 9^9Li clusters connected with two valence neutrons in 20^{20}C

Many preceding works have shown in 11^{11}Li the presence of the halo structure comprised of the weakly bound two neutrons around 9^9Li, and it is intriguing to see how this halo structure changes when another 9^9Li approaches. In this study, we introduce a four-body model for 20^{20}C with two 9^9Li clusters and two valence neutrons. The recent development of the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) makes it possible to generate jjjj-coupling shell-model wave functions from αα cluster models. Here, jjjj-coupling shell model wave function of 9^9Li is regarded as a cluster, which corresponds to the subclosure configuration of p3/2p_{3/2} for the neutrons, and we discuss how the two neutrons connect two 9^9Li clusters. Until now, most of the clusters in the conventional models have been limited to the closures of the three-dimensional harmonic oscillators, such as 4^4He, 16^{16}O, and 40^{40}Ca; however, owing to AQCM, it is feasible to utilize the jjjj-coupling shell model wave functions as plural subsystems quite easily. The appearance of a rotational band structure with a cluster structure around the four-body threshold energy is discussed.

8^8He and 9^9Li cluster structures in light nuclei

The possibility of the 8^8He and 9^{9}Li clusters in atomic nuclei is discussed. Until now most of the clusters in the conventional models have been limited to the closures of the three-dimensional harmonic oscillators, such as 4^4He, 16^{16}O, and 40^{40}Ca. In the neutron-rich nuclei, however, the neutron to proton ratio is not unity, and it is worthwhile to think about more neutron-rich objects with N>ZN>Z as the building blocks of cluster structures. Here the nuclei with the neutron number six, which is the subclosure of the p3/2p_{3/2} subshell of the jjjj-coupling shell model, are assumed to be clusters, and thus we study the 8^8He and 9^9Li cluster structures in 16^{16}Be (8^8He+8^8He), 17^{17}B (8^8He+9^9Li), 18^{18}C (9^9Li+9^9Li), and 24^{24}C (8^8He+8^8He+8^8He). Recent progress of the antisymmetrized quasi cluster model (AQCM) enables us to utilize jjjj-coupling shell model wave functions as the clusters rather easily. It is shown that the 8^8He+9^9Li and 9^9Li+9^9Li cluster configurations cover the lowest shell-model states of 17^{17}B and 18^{18}C, respectively. To predict the cluster states with large relative distances, we increase the expectation value of the principal quantum numbers by adding the nodes to the lowest states under the condition that the total angular momentum is unchanged (equal to Jπ=0J^π=0). As a result, developed cluster states are obtained around the corresponding threshold energies. The rotational band structure of 24^{24}C, which reflect the symmetry of equilateral triangular configuration (D3hD_{3h} symmetry) of three 8^8He clusters, also appears around the threshold energy.

Post-formation in alpha emission from nuclei

We propose a novel mechanism to explain nuclear decay by emission of an alpha particle. We show that the famous Geiger-Nuttall law can be explained by post-forming an alpha particle outside the range of the nuclear interaction with the daughter nucleus. This contrasts with the commonly accepted mechanism of first alpha particle pre-formation followed by emission through barrier penetration. We predict that the post-formation mechanism is more likely to occur for alpha-particles with higher energy.
