Chirality-Induced Spin Filtering in Pseudo Jahn-Teller Molecules

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) refers to an ability to induce a spin polarization of an electron transmitted through chiral materials. An important experimental observation is that incredibly large spin polarization is realized at room temperature even for organic molecules that have weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC), although SOC is the only interaction that can manipulate the electrons' spins in the setups. Therefore, the mechanism of the CISS needs to be constructed in a way insensitive to or enhancing the magnitude of the SOC strength. In this paper, we describe a theoretical study of CISS with a model chiral molecule that belongs to the point group $\mathrm{C}_3$. In this molecule, electronic translational and rotational degrees of freedom for an injected electron are coupled to one another via the nuclear vibrational mode with a pseudo Jahn-Teller effect. By properly taking the molecular symmetry as well as the time-reversal symmetry into account and classifying the molecular ground states by their angular- and spin-momentum quantum numbers, we show that the chiral molecule can act as an efficient spin filter. The efficiency of this spin filtering can be nearly independent of the SOC strength in this model, while it well exceeds the spin polarization relying solely on the SOC. The nuclear vibrations turned out to have the role of not only mediating the translation-rotation coupling, but also enhancing the spin-filtering efficiency.

Truly chiral phonons in α-HgS

Chirality is a manifestation of the asymmetry inherent in nature. It has been defined as the symmetry breaking of the parity of static objects, and the definition was extended to dynamic motion such that true and false chiralities were distinguished. Recently, rotating, yet not propagating, atomic motions were predicted and observed in two-dimensional materials, and they were referred to as "chiral phonons" . A natural development would be the discovery of truly chiral phonons that propagate while rotating in three-dimensional materials. Here, we used circularly polarised Raman scattering and first-principles calculations to identify truly chiral phonons in chiral bulk crystals. This approach enabled us to determine the chirality of a crystal in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. In addition, we demonstrated that the law of the conservation of pseudo-angular momentum holds between circularly polarised photons and chiral phonons. These findings are expected to help develop ways for transferring the pseudo-angular momentum from photons to electron spins via the propagating chiral phonons in opto-phononic-spintronic devices.

Finite-Temperature Properties of Three-Dimensional Classical Chiral Helimagnets

A three-dimensional chiral helimagnet is analyzed using a mean-field (MF) analysis and a classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation at finite temperatures. We consider a Hamiltonian containing Heisenberg exchange and uni-axial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on a simple cubic lattice. Magnetization curves calculated by the MF theory are qualitatively consistent with those observed in experiments. A comparison between lattice and continuum models clarifies the region where the continuum approximation can be applied. By combining the MF theory with the classical MC method, it is also clarified that results are quantitatively much improved by including spin correlations in the layer perpendicular to the helical axis. On the basis of our simple model, interaction parameters in $CrNb_3S_6$ are estimated. These values of exchange interactions justify a physical picture that the spins are strongly coupled in the two-dimensional layer and are weakly interacted with those in the helical chain.

Incommensurate--commensurate transitions in the mono-axial chiral helimagnet driven by the magnetic field

The zero temperature phase diagram of the mono-axial chiral helimagnet in the magnetic field plane formed by the components parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis is thoroughly analyzed. The nature of the transition to the commensurate state depends on the angle between the field and the helical axis. For field directions close to the directions parallel or perpendicular to the helical axis the transition is continuous, while for intermediate angles the transition is discontinuous and the incommensurate and commensurate states coexist on the transition line. The continuous and discontinuous transition lines are separated by two tricritical points with specific singular behaviour. The location of the continuous and discontinuous lines and of the tricritical points depend strongly on the easy-plane anisotropy, the effect of which is analyzed. For large anisotropy the conical approximation locates the transition line very accurately, although it does not predict the continuous transitions nor the tricitical behaviour. It is shown that for large anisotropy, as in CrNb3S6, the form of the transition line is universal, that is, independent of the sample, and obeys a simple equation. The position of the tricritical points, which is not universal, is theoretically estimated for a sample of CrNb3S6

Magnetic soliton transport over topological spin texture in chiral helimagnet with strong easy-plane anisotropy

We show the existence of an isolated soliton excitation over the topological ground state configuration in chiral helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia exchange and the strong easy-plane anisotropy. The magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis stabilizes the kink crystal state which plays a role of "topological protectorate" for the traveling soliton with a definite handedness. To find new soliton solution, we use the Bäcklund transformation technique. It is pointed out that the traveling soliton carries the magnon density and a magnetic solition transport may be realized.

Origin of adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin transfer torques in current-driven magnetic domain wall motion

A consistent theory to describe the correlated dynamics of quantum mechanical itinerant spins and semiclassical local magnetization is given. We consider the itinerant spins as quantum mechanical operators, whereas local moments are considered within classical Lagrangian formalism. By appropriately treating fluctuation space spanned by basis functions, including a zero-mode wave function, we construct coupled equations of motion for the collective coordinate of the center-of-mass motion and the localized zero-mode coordinate perpendicular to the domain wall plane. By solving them, we demonstrate that the correlated dynamics is understood through a hierarchy of two time scales: Boltzmann relaxation time when a non-adiabatic part of the spin-transfer torque appears, and Gilbert damping time when adiabatic part comes up.

Spin resonance in chiral helimagnet

It is suggested that marked features of symmetry breaking mechanism and elementary excitations in chiral helimagnet come up as visible effects in electron spin resonance (ESR) profile. Under the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis, elementary excitations are respectively described by the helimagnon associated with rotational symmetry breaking and the magnetic kink crystal phonon associated with translational symmetry breaking. We demonstrate how the ESR spectra distinguish these excitations.
