Chirality-Controlled Enantiopure Crystal Growth of a Transition Metal Monosilicide by a Floating Zone Method

We performed a crystal growth to obtain chirality-controlled enantiopure crystals using a laser-diode-heated floating zone (LDFZ) method with a composition-gradient feed rod. It has been argued that the crystal handedness of $T$Si ($T$ : transition metal) is fixed depending on $T$ in the case of the ones grown by the conventional methods. We found that right-handed single crystals of CoSi and MnSi were grown from the composition gradient feed rods that consist of FeSi--CoSi and FeSi--MnSi, respectively. The obtained CoSi and MnSi crystals inherit the chirality from the seed part of FeSi, which grows in a right-handed structure, and thus have the chirality opposite to that for the crystals in the literature. The LDFZ method with the feed rods with various combinations of $T$Si compounds enables a flexible control of the chirality of $T$Si and will be useful for clarifying the interplay between the crystalline chirality and chirality-induced physical responses.

Momentum-dependent magnon lifetime in the metallic non-collinear triangular antiferromagnet CrB2

Non-collinear magnetic order arises for various reasons in several magnetic systems and exhibits interesting spin dynamics. Despite its ubiquitous presence, little is known of how magnons, otherwise stable quasiparticles, decay in these systems, particularly in metallic magnets. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we examine the magnetic excitation spectra in a metallic non-collinear antiferromagnet CrB$_{2}$, in which Cr atoms form a triangular lattice and display incommensurate magnetic order. Our data show intrinsic magnon damping and continuum-like excitations that cannot be explained by linear spin wave theory. The intrinsic magnon linewidth $Γ(q,E_{q})$ shows very unusual momentum dependence, which our analysis shows to originate from the combination of two-magnon decay and the Stoner continuum. By comparing the theoretical predictions with the experiments, we identify where in the momentum and energy space one of the two factors becomes more dominant. Our work constitutes a rare comprehensive study of the spin dynamics in metallic non-collinear antiferromagnets. It reveals, for the first time, definite experimental evidence of the higher-order effects in metallic antiferromagnets.

Unconventional superconductivity in Y$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ probed by muon spin relaxation

Conventional superconductors are robust diamagnets that expels magnetic fields through the Meissner effect. It would therefore be unexpected if a superconducting ground state would support spontaneous magnetics fields. Such broken time-reversal symmetry states have been suggested for the high$-$temperature superconductors, but their identification remains experimentally controversial. We present magnetization, heat capacity, zero field and transverse field muon spin relaxation experiments on the recently discovered caged type superconductor \yrhsn\ ($T_{\bf c}$ = 3.0 K). The electronic heat capacity of \yrhsn\ shows a $T^3$ dependence below $T_{\bf c}$ indicating an anisotropic superconducting gap with a point node. This result is in sharp contrast to that observed in the isostructural Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ which is a strong coupling $s-$wave superconductor. The temperature dependence of the deduced superfluid density \yrhsn\ is consistent with a BCS $s-$wave gap function, while the zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements strongly evidences unconventional superconductivity through a spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature, signifying that the superconducting state is categorized by the broken time-reversal symmetry.

NMR and NQR Studies on Non-centrosymmetric Superconductors Re7B3, LaBiPt, and BiPd

We report the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements for non-centrosymmetric superconductors Re7B3, LaBiPt, and BiPd containing heavy elements. For all three compounds, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 shows a coherence peak just below Tc and decreases exponentially at low temperatures, which indicates that an isotropic superconducting gap is dominant in these compounds. In BiPd, the height of the coherence peak just below Tc is much suppressed, which suggests that there exists a substantial component of gap with nodes in this compound. Our results indicate that heavy element is not the only factor, but the extent of inversion symmetry breaking is also important to induce a large spin-orbit coupling and an unconventional superconducting state.
