Balanced configurations of points in the plane

A balanced configuration of points on the sphere $S^2$ is a (finite) set of points which are in equilibrium if they act on each other according any force law dependent only on the distance between two points. The configuration is additionally group-balanced if for each point in a configuration $\mathcal{C}$, there is a symmetry of $\mathcal{C}$ fixing only that point and its antipode. Leech showed that these definitions are equivalent on the sphere $S^2$ by classifying all possible balanced configurations. On the other hand, Cohn, Elkies, Kumar, and Schürmann showed that for $n\geq 7,$ there are examples of balanced configurations in $S^{n-1}$ which are not group balanced. They also suggested extending the notion of balanced configurations to Euclidean space, and conjectured that at least in the case of the plane, all discrete balanced configurations in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are group-balanced. We verify a reformulation of this conjecture by providing a complete classification of the balanced configurations in $\mathbb{R}^2$ satisfying a certain minimal distance property.

Flip cycles in plabic graphs

Planar bicolored (plabic) graphs are combinatorial objects introduced by Postnikov to give parameterizations of the positroid cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian $\text{Gr}^{\geq 0}(n,k)$. Any two plabic graphs for the same positroid cell can be related by a sequence of certain moves. The flip graph has plabic graphs as vertices and has edges connecting the plabic graphs which are related by a single move. A recent result of Galashin shows that plabic graphs can be seen as cross-sections of zonotopal tilings for the cyclic zonotope $Z(n,3)$. Taking this perspective, we show that the fundamental group of the flip graph is generated by cycles of length 4, 5, and 10, and use this result to prove a related conjecture of Dylan Thurston about triple crossing diagrams. We also apply our result to make progress on an instance of the generalized Baues problem.

Rowmotion Orbits of Trapezoid Posets

Rowmotion is an invertible operator on the order ideals of a poset which has been extensively studied and is well understood for the rectangle poset. In this paper, we show that rowmotion is equivariant with respect to a bijection of Hamaker, Patrias, Pechenik and Williams between order ideals of rectangle and trapezoid posets, thereby affirming a conjecture of Hopkins that the rectangle and trapezoid posets have the same rowmotion orbit structures. Our main tools in proving this are $K$-jeu-de-taquin and (weak) $K$-Knuth equivalence of increasing tableaux. We define $almost$ $minimal$ $tableaux$ as a family of tableaux naturally arising from order ideals and show for any $λ$, the almost minimal tableaux of shape $λ$ are in different (weak) $K$-Knuth equivalence classes. We also discuss and make some progress on related conjectures of Hopkins on down-degree homomesy.

Lower Bounds on Davenport-Schinzel Sequences via Rectangular Zarankiewicz Matrices

An order-$s$ Davenport-Schinzel sequence over an $n$-letter alphabet is one avoiding immediate repetitions and alternating subsequences with length $s+2$. The main problem is to determine the maximum length of such a sequence, as a function of $n$ and $s$. When $s$ is fixed this problem has been settled but when $s$ is a function of $n$, very little is known about the extremal function $λ(s,n)$ of such sequences. In this paper we give a new recursive construction of Davenport-Schinzel sequences that is based on dense 0-1 matrices avoiding large all-1 submatrices (aka Zarankiewicz's Problem.) In particular, we give a simple construction of $n^{2/t} \times n$ matrices containing $n^{1+1/t}$ 1s that avoid $t\times 2$ all-1 submatrices. Our lower bounds on $λ(s,n)$ exhibit three qualitatively different behaviors depending on the size of $s$ relative to $n$. When $s \le \log\log n$ we show that $λ(s,n)/n \ge 2^s$ grows exponentially with $s$. When $s = n^{o(1)}$ we show $λ(s,n)/n \ge (\frac{s}{2\log\log_s n})^{\log\log_s n}$ grows faster than any polynomial in $s$. Finally, when $s=Ω(n^{1/t}(t-1)!)$, $λ(s,n) = Ω(n^2 s/(t-1)!)$ matches the trivial upper bound $O(n^2s)$ asymptotically, whenever $t$ is constant.
