Existence of Rotating Stars with Variable Entropy

We model a rotating star as a compressible fluid subject to gravitational forces. In almost all the mathematical literature the entropy is considered to be constant. Here we allow it to be variable. We consider a star that steadily rotates differentially around a fixed axis, say the $z$-axis. We prove the existence of a family of such stars with small angular velocity $ω$ and small entropy variation $s$ and with an equation of state $p=Ke^sρ^γ$. Our analysis reduces to a hyperbolic equation for the modified entropy coupled to an elliptic equation for the modified density, together with a mass constraint. Due to the variable entropy and the consequent loss of both regularity and variational structure, all the methods in the previous literature fail. We develop a new ad hoc perturbative strategy that allows us to construct rotating stars that bifurcate from the non-rotating ones.

Incompressible Euler limit from Boltzmann equation with Diffuse Boundary Condition for Analytic data

A rigorous derivation of the incompressible Euler equations with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse reflection boundary condition has been a challenging open problem. We settle this open question in the affirmative when the initial data of fluid are well-prepared in a real analytic space, in 3D half space. As a key of this advance we capture the Navier-Stokes equations of $$\textit{viscosity} \sim \frac{\textit{Knudsen number}}{\textit{Mach number}}$$ satisfying the no-slip boundary condition, as an $\textit{intermediary}$ approximation of the Euler equations through a new Hilbert-type expansion of Boltzmann equation with the diffuse reflection boundary condition. Aiming to justify the approximation we establish a novel quantitative $L^p$-$L^\infty$ estimate of the Boltzmann perturbation around a local Maxwellian of such viscous approximation, along with the commutator estimates and the integrability gain of the hydrodynamic part in various spaces; we also establish direct estimates of the Navier-Stokes equations in higher regularity with the aid of the initial-boundary and boundary layer weights using a recent Green's function approach. The incompressible Euler limit follows as a byproduct of our framework.

Linearized Analysis of Barotropic Perturbations around Spherically Symmetric Gaseous Stars Governed by the Euler-Poisson Equations

The hydrodynamic evolution of self-gravitating gaseous stars is governed by the Euler-Poisson equations. We study the structure of the linear approximation of barotropic perturbations around spherically symmetric equilibria based on functional analytic tools. In contrast to folklore, we show that the spectrum of the linearized operator for general perturbations is not of the Sturm-Liouville type unless the perturbations are restricted. In particular, we prove that it is of the Sturm-Liouville type for irrotational perturbations.

Nonlinear stability of expanding star solutions in the radially-symmetric mass-critical Euler-Poisson system

We prove nonlinear stability of compactly supported expanding star-solutions of the mass-critical gravitational Euler-Poisson system. These special solutions were discovered by Goldreich and Weber in 1980. The expanding rate of such solutions can be either self-similar or non-self-similar (linear), and we treat both types. An important outcome of our stability results is the existence of a new class of global-in-time radially symmetric solutions, which are not homogeneous and therefore not encompassed by the existing works. Using Lagrangian coordinates we reformulate the associated free-boundary problem as a degenerate quasilinear wave equation on a compact spatial domain. The problem is mass-critical with respect to an invariant rescaling and the analysis is carried out in similarity variables.

Lagrangian formulation and a priori estimates for relativistic fluid flows with vacuum

We study the evolution of a compressible fluid surrounded by vacuum and introduce a new symmetrization in Lagrangian coordinates that allows us to encompass both relativistic and non-relativistic fluid flows. The problem under consideration is a free boundary problem of central interest in compressible fluid dynamics and, from the mathematical standpoint, the main challenge to be overcome lies in the loss of regularity in the fluid variables near the free boundary. Based on our Lagrangian formulation, we establish the necessary a priori estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces which are adapted to this loss of regularity.

The compressible viscous surface-internal wave problem: local well-posedness

This paper concerns the dynamics of two layers of compressible, barotropic, viscous fluid lying atop one another. The lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom, and the upper fluid is bounded above by a trivial fluid of constant pressure. This is a free boundary problem: the interfaces between the fluids and above the upper fluid are free to move. The fluids are acted on by gravity in the bulk, and at the free interfaces we consider both the case of surface tension and the case of no surface forces. We prove that the problem is locally well-posed. Our method relies on energy methods in Sobolev spaces for a collection of related linear and nonlinear problems.

The compressible viscous surface-internal wave problem: nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor instability

We are concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability when the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid along the equilibrium interface. When the surface tension at the free internal interface is below the critical value, we prove that the problem is nonlinear unstable.

The compressible viscous surface-internal wave problem: stability and vanishing surface tension limit

We establish a sharp nonlinear global-in-time stability criterion and give the explicit decay rates to the equilibrium. When the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid along the equilibrium interface, we characterize the set of surface tension values in which the equilibrium is nonlinearly stable. Remarkably, this set is non-empty, i.e. sufficiently large surface tension can prevent the onset of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. When the lower fluid is heavier than the upper fluid, we show that the equilibrium is stable for all non-negative surface tensions and we establish the zero surface tension limit.

Analysis of Asymptotic Preserving DG-IMEX Schemes for Linear Kinetic Transport Equations in a Diffusive Scaling

In this paper, some theoretical aspects will be addressed for the asymptotic preserving DG-IMEX schemes recently proposed in [J. Jang, F. Li, J.-M. Qiu and T. Xiong, submitted, arxiv:1306.0227] for kinetic transport equations under a diffusive scaling. We will focus on the methods that are based on discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spatial discretizations with the $P^k$ polynomial space and a first order IMEX temporal discretization, and apply them to two linear models: the telegraph equation and the one-group transport equation in slab geometry. In particular, we will establish uniform numerical stability with respect to Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ using energy methods, as well as error estimates for any given $\varepsilon$. When $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$, a rigorous asymptotic analysis of the schemes is also obtained. Though the methods and the analysis are presented for one dimension in space, they can be generalized to higher dimensions directly.

High Order Asymptotic Preserving Nodal Discontinuous Galerkin IMEX Schemes for the BGK Equation

In this paper, we develop high-order asymptotic preserving (AP) schemes for the BGK equation in a hyperbolic scaling, which leads to the macroscopic models such as the Euler and compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the asymptotic limit. Our approaches are based on the so-called micro-macro formulation of the kinetic equation which involves a natural decomposition of the problem to the equilibrium and the non-equilibrium parts. The proposed methods are formulated for the BGK equation with constant or spatially variant Knudsen number. The new ingredients for the proposed methods to achieve high order accuracy are the following: we introduce discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of arbitrary order of accuracy with nodal Lagrangian basis functions in space; we employ a high order globally stiffly accurate implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta (RK) scheme as time discretization. Two versions of the schemes are proposed: Scheme I is a direct formulation based on the micro-macro decomposition of the BGK equation, while Scheme II, motivated by the asymptotic analysis for the continuous problem, utilizes certain properties of the projection operator. Compared with Scheme I, Scheme II not only has better computational efficiency (the computational cost is reduced by half roughly), but also allows the establishment of a formal asymptotic analysis. Specifically, it is demonstrated that when $0<ε\ll 1$, Scheme II, up to $\mathcal{O}(ε^2)$, becomes a local DG discretization with an explicit RK method for the macroscopic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, a method in a similar spirit to the ones in [Bassi \& Rabey 1997, Cockburn \& Shu 1998]. Numerical results are presented for a wide range of Knudsen number to illustrate the effectiveness and high order accuracy of the methods.

Passive scalars, moving boundaries, and Newton's law of cooling

We study the evolution of passive scalars in both rigid and moving slab-like domains, in both horizontally periodic and infinite contexts. The scalar is required to satisfy Robin-type boundary conditions corresponding to Newton's law of cooling, which lead to nontrivial equilibrium configurations. We study the equilibration rate of the passive scalar in terms of the parameters in the boundary condition and the equilibration rates of the background velocity field and moving domain.

High Order Asymptotic Preserving DG-IMEX Schemes for Discrete-Velocity Kinetic Equations in a Diffusive Scaling

In this paper, we develop a family of high order asymptotic preserving schemes for some discrete-velocity kinetic equations under a diffusive scaling, that in the asymptotic limit lead to macroscopic models such as the heat equation, the porous media equation, the advection-diffusion equation, and the viscous Burgers equation. Our approach is based on the micro-macro reformulation of the kinetic equation which involves a natural decomposition of the equation to the equilibrium and non-equilibrium parts. To achieve high order accuracy and uniform stability as well as to capture the correct asymptotic limit, two new ingredients are employed in the proposed methods: discontinuous Galerkin spatial discretization of arbitrary order of accuracy with suitable numerical fluxes; high order globally stiffly accurate implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta scheme in time equipped with a properly chosen implicit-explicit strategy. Formal asymptotic analysis shows that the proposed scheme in the limit of epsilon -> 0 is an explicit, consistent and high order discretization for the limiting equation. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the stability and high order accuracy of the proposed schemes together with their performance in the limit.

THE Fokker-Planck Equation With Absorbing Boundary Conditions

We study the initial-boundary value problem for the Fokker-Planck equation in an interval with absorbing boundary conditions. We develop a theory of well-posedness of classical solutions for the problem. We also prove that the resulting solutions decay exponentially for long times. To prove these results we obtain several crucial estimates, which include hypoellipticity away from the singular set for the Fokker-Planck equation with absorbing boundary conditions, as well as the Holder continuity of the solutions up to the singular set.

Derivation of Ohm's law from the kinetic equations

The goal of this article is to give a formal derivation of Ohm's law of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) starting from the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system. The derivation is based on various physical scalings and the moment methods when the Knudsen number goes to zero. We also give a derivation of the so-called Hall effect as well as other limit models such as the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system. Our results include both the compressible and incompressible MHD models.

Smooth global solutions for the two dimensional Euler Poisson system

The Euler-Poisson system is a fundamental two-fluid model to describe the dynamics of the plasma consisting of compressible electrons and a uniform ion background. By using the dispersive Klein-Gordon effect, Guo \cite{Guo98} first constructed a global smooth irrotational solution in the three dimensional case. It has been conjectured that same results should hold in the two-dimensional case. The main difficulty in 2D comes from the slow dispersion of the linear flow and certain nonlocal resonant obstructions in the nonlinearity. In this paper we develop a new method to overcome these difficulties and construct smooth global solutions for the 2D Euler-Poisson system.

Well-posedness of compressible Euler equations in a physical vacuum

An important problem in gas and fluid dynamics is to understand the behavior of vacuum states, namely the behavior of the system in the presence of vacuum. In particular, physical vacuum, in which the boundary moves with a nontrivial finite normal acceleration, naturally arises in the study of the motion of gaseous stars or shallow water. Despite its importance, there are only few mathematical results available near vacuum. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the physical systems become degenerate along the vacuum boundary. In this paper, we establish the local-in-time well-posedness of three-dimensional compressible Euler equations for polytropic gases with physical vacuum by considering the problem as a free boundary problem.

Global Hilbert Expansion for the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann System

We study the Hilbert expansion for small Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the Vlasov-Boltzmann-Poisson system for an electron gas. The zeroth order term takes the form of local Maxwellian: $ F_{0}(t,x,v)=\frac{ρ_{0}(t,x)}{(2πθ_{0}(t,x))^{3/2}} e^{-|v-u_{0}(t,x)|^{2}/2θ_{0}(t,x)},\text{\ }θ_{0}(t,x)=Kρ_{0}^{2/3}(t,x).$ Our main result states that if the Hilbert expansion is valid at $t=0$ for well-prepared small initial data with irrotational velocity $u_0$, then it is valid for $0\leq t\leq \varepsilon ^{-{1/2}\frac{2k-3}{2k-2}},$ where $ρ_{0}(t,x)$ and $ u_{0}(t,x)$ satisfy the Euler-Poisson system for monatomic gas $γ=5/3$.
