Effective methods for constructing extreme quantum observables

We study extreme points of the set of finite-outcome positive-operator-valued measures (POVMs) on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and particularly the possible ranks of the effects of an extreme POVM. We give results discussing ways of deducing new rank combinations of extreme POVMs from rank combinations of known extreme POVMs and, using these results, show ways to characterize rank combinations of extreme POVMs in low dimensions. We show that, when a rank combination together with a given dimension of the Hilbert space solve a particular packing problem, there is an extreme POVM on the Hilbert space with the given ranks. This geometric method is particularly effective for constructing extreme POVMs with desired rank combinations.

On the complementarity of the quadrature observables

In this paper we investigate the coupling properties of pairs of quadrature observables, showing that, apart from the Weyl relation, they share the same coupling properties as the position-momentum pair. In particular, they are complementary. We determine the marginal observables of a covariant phase space observable with respect to an arbitrary rotated reference frame, and observe that these marginal observables are unsharp quadrature observables. The related distributions constitute the Radon tranform of a phase space distribution of the covariant phase space observable. Since the quadrature distributions are the Radon transform of the Wigner function of a state, we also exhibit the relation between the quadrature observables and the tomography observable, and show how to construct the phase space observable from the quadrature observables. Finally, we give a method to measure together with a single measurement scheme any complementary pair of quadrature observables.

Diagonalization and representation results for nonpositive sesquilinear form measures

We study decompositions of operator measures and more general sesquilinear form measures $E$ into linear combinations of positive parts, and their diagonal vector expansions. The underlying philosophy is to represent $E$ as a trace class valued measure of bounded variation on a new Hilbert space related to $E$. The choice of the auxiliary Hilbert space fixes a unique decomposition with certain properties, but this choice itself is not canonical. We present relations to Naimark type dilations and direct integrals.

Two questions on quantum statistics

The determination of a quantum observable from the first and second moments of its measurement outcome statistics is investigated. Operational conditions for the moments of a probability measure are given which suffice to determine the probability measure. Differential operators are shown to lead to physically relevant cases where the expectation values of large classes of noncommuting observables do not distinguish superpositions of states and, in particular, where the full moment information does not determine the probability measure.

On the structure of covariant phase observables

We study the mathematical structure of covariant phase observables. Such an observable can alternatively be expressed as a phase matrix, as a sequence of unit vectors, as a sequence of phase states, or as an equivalent class of covariant trace-preserving operations. Covariant generalized operator measures are defined by structure matrices which form a W*-algebra with phase matrices as its subset. The properties of the Radon-Nikodym derivatives of phase probability measures are studied.

The Pegg-Barnett Formalism and Covariant Phase Observables

We compare the Pegg-Barnett (PB) formalism with the covariant phase observable approach to the problem of quantum phase and show that PB-formalism gives essentially the same results as the canonical (covariant) phase observable. We also show that PB-formalism can be extended to cover all covariant phase observables including the covariant phase observable arising from the angle margin of the Husimi Q-function.

The phase representation of covariant phase observables

Covariant phase observables are obtained by defining simple conditions for mappings from the set of phase wave functions (unit vectors of the Hardy space) to the set of phase probability densities. The existence of phase probability density for any phase wave function, the existence of interference effects, and the natural phase shift covariance are those simple conditions. The nonlocalizability of covariant phase observables is proved.
