Multi-class Label Noise Learning via Loss Decomposition and Centroid Estimation

In real-world scenarios, many large-scale datasets often contain inaccurate labels, i.e., noisy labels, which may confuse model training and lead to performance degradation. To overcome this issue, Label Noise Learning (LNL) has recently attracted much attention, and various methods have been proposed to design an unbiased risk estimator to the noise-free dataset to combat such label noise. Among them, a trend of works based on Loss Decomposition and Centroid Estimation (LDCE) has shown very promising performance. However, existing LNL methods based on LDCE are only designed for binary classification, and they are not directly extendable to multi-class situations. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-class robust learning method for LDCE, which is termed "MC-LDCE". Specifically, we decompose the commonly adopted loss (e.g., mean squared loss) function into a label-dependent part and a label-independent part, in which only the former is influenced by label noise. Further, by defining a new form of data centroid, we transform the recovery problem of a label-dependent part to a centroid estimation problem. Finally, by critically examining the mathematical expectation of clean data centroid given the observed noisy set, the centroid can be estimated which helps to build an unbiased risk estimator for multi-class learning. The proposed MC-LDCE method is general and applicable to different types (i.e., linear and nonlinear) of classification models. The experimental results on five public datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed MC-LDCE against other representative LNL methods in tackling multi-class label noise problem.

A multigrid-reduction-in-time solver with a new two-level convergence for unsteady fractional Laplacian problems

The multigrid-reduction-in-time (MGRIT) technique has proven to be successful in achieving higher run-time speedup by exploiting parallelism in time. The goal of this article is to develop and analyze a MGRIT algorithm, using FCF-relaxation with time-dependent time-grid propagators, to seek the finite element approximations of unsteady fractional Laplacian problems. The multigrid with line smoother proposed in [L. Chen, R. H. Nochetto, E. Ot{á}rola, A. J. Salgado, Math. Comp. 85 (2016) 2583--2607] is chosen to be the spatial solver. Motivated by [B. S. Southworth, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 40 (2019) 564--608], we provide a new temporal eigenvalue approximation property and then deduce a generalized two-level convergence theory which removes the previous unitary diagonalization assumption on the fine and coarse time-grid propagators required in [X. Q. Yue, S. Shu, X. W. Xu, W. P. Bu, K. J. Pan, Comput. Math. Appl. 78 (2019) 3471--3484]. Numerical computations are included to confirm the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the sharpness of the derived convergence upper bound.

Efficient algorithm for computing large scale systems of differential algebraic equations

In many mathematical models of physical phenomenons and engineering fields, such as electrical circuits or mechanical multibody systems, which generate the differential algebraic equations (DAEs) systems naturally. In general, the feature of DAEs is a sparse large scale system of fully nonlinear and high index. To make use of its sparsity, this paper provides a simple and efficient algorithm for computing the large scale DAEs system. We exploit the shortest augmenting path algorithm for finding maximum value transversal (MVT) as well as block triangular forms (BTF). We also present the extended signature matrix method with the block fixed point iteration and its complexity results. Furthermore, a range of nontrivial problems are demonstrated by our algorithm.

Structural index reduction algorithms for differential algebraic equations via fixed-point iteration

Motivated by Pryce's structural index reduction method for differential algebraic equations (DAEs), we show the complexity of the fixed-point iteration algorithm and propose a fixed-point iteration method with parameters. It leads to a block fixed-point iteration method which can be applied to large-scale DAEs with block upper triangular structure. Moreover, its complexity analysis is also given in this paper.
