On the Schrödinger Equation for Time-Dependent Hamiltonians with a Constant Form Domain

We study two seminal approaches, developed by B. Simon and J. Kisyński, to the well-posedness of the Schrödinger equation with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In both cases the Hamiltonian is assumed to be semibounded from below and to have constant form domain but a possibly non-constant operator domain. The problem is addressed in the abstract setting, without assuming any specific functional expression for the Hamiltonian. The connection between the two approaches is the relation between sesquilinear forms and the bounded linear operators representing them. We provide a characterization of continuity and differentiability properties of form-valued and operator-valued functions which enables an extensive comparison between the two approaches and their technical assumptions.

Representation of non-semibounded quadratic forms and orthogonal additivity

A representation theorem for non-semibounded Hermitian quadratic forms in terms of a (non-semibounded) self-adjoint operator is proven. The main assumptions are closability of the Hermitian quadratic form, the direct integral structure of the underlying Hilbert space and orthogonal additivity. We apply this result to several examples, including the position operator in quantum mechanics and quadratic forms invariant under a unitary representation of a separable locally compact group. The case of invariance under a compact group is also discussed in detail.

On Self-adjoint extensions and symmetries in Quantum Mechanics

Given a unitary representation of a Lie group $G$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we develop the theory of $G$-invariant self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators both using von Neumann's theorem and the theory of quadratic forms. We also analyze the relation between the reduction theory of the unitary representation and the reduction of the $G$-invariant unbounded operator. We also prove a $G$-invariant version of the representation theorem for quadratic forms. The previous results are applied to the study of $G$-invariant self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a smooth Riemannian manifold with boundary on which the group $G$ acts. These extensions are labeled by admissible unitaries $U$ acting on the $L^2$-space at the boundary and having spectral gap at $-1$. It is shown that if the unitary representation $V$ of the symmetry group $G$ is traceable, then the self-adjoint extension of the Laplace-Beltrami operator determined by $U$ is $G$-invariant if $U$ and $V$ commute at the boundary. Various significant examples are discussed at the end.

On the Theory of Self-Adjoint Extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami Operator, Quadratic Forms and Symmetry

The main objective of this dissertation is to analyse thoroughly the construction of self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and the role that quadratic forms play to describe them. Moreover, we want to emphasise the role that quadratic forms can play in the description of quantum systems. A characterisation of the self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in terms of unitary operators acting on the Hilbert space at the boundary is given. Using this description we are able to characterise a wide class of self-adjoint extensions that go beyond the usual ones, i.e. Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin,.. and that are semi-bounded below. A numerical scheme to compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors in any dimension is proposed and its convergence is proved. The role of invariance under the action of symmetry groups is analysed in the general context of the theory of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators and in the context of closed quadratic forms. The self-adjoint extensions possessing the same invariance than the symmetric operator that they extend are characterised in the most abstract setting. The case of the Laplace-Beltrami operator is analysed also in this case. Finally, a way to generalise Kato's representation theorem for not semi-bounded, closed quadratic forms is proposed.

Self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and unitaries at the boundary

We construct in this article a class of closed semi-bounded quadratic forms on the space of square integrable functions over a smooth Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. Each of these quadratic forms specifies a semi-bounded self-adjoint extension of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. These quadratic forms are based on the Lagrange boundary form on the manifold and a family of domains parametrized by a suitable class of unitary operators on the boundary that will be called admissible. The corresponding quadratic forms are semi-bounded below and closable. Finally, the representing operators correspond to semi-bounded self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. This family of extensions is compared with results existing in the literature and various examples and applications are discussed.
