Conformal field theories on deformed spheres, anomalies, and supersymmetry

We study the free energy of four-dimensional CFTs on deformed spheres. For generic nonsupersymmetric CFTs only the coefficient of the logarithmic divergence in the free energy is physical, which is an extremum for the round sphere. We then specialize to $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs where one can preserve some supersymmetry on a compact manifold by turning on appropriate background fields. For deformations of the round sphere the $c$ anomaly receives corrections proportional to the supersymmetric completion of the (Weyl)$^2$ term, which we determine up to one constant by analyzing the scale dependence of various correlators in the stress-tensor multiplet. We further show that the double derivative of the free energy with respect to the marginal couplings is proportional to the two-point function of the bottom components of the marginal chiral multiplet placed at the two poles of the deformed sphere. We then use anomaly considerations and counter-terms to parametrize the finite part of the free energy which makes manifest its dependence on the Kähler potential. We demonstrate these results for a theory with a vector multiplet and a massless adjoint hypermultiplet using results from localization. Finally, by choosing a special value of the hypermultiplet mass where the free energy is independent of the deformation, we derive an infinite number of constraints between various integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with any gauge group and at all values of the coupling, extending previous results.

Notes on anomalies, elliptic curves and the BS-D conjecture

We consider anomaly cancellation for $SU(N)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge theories where the left-handed chiral multiplets are in higher $SU(2)$ representations. In particular, if the left-handed quarks and leptons transform under the triplet representation of $SU(2)$ and if the $U(1)$ gauge group is compact then up to an overall scaling there is only one possible nontrivial assignment for the hypercharges if $N=3$, and two if $N=9$. Otherwise there are infinitely many. We use the Mordell-Weil theorem, Mazur's theorem and the Cremona elliptic curve database which uses Kolyvagin's theorem on the Birch Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture to prove these statements.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills, Spherical Branes, and Precision Holography

Using supersymmetric localization we compute the free energy and BPS Wilson loop vacuum expectation values for planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^d$ in the strong coupling limit for $2\leq d<6$. The same calculation can also be performed in supergravity using the recently found spherical brane solutions. We find excellent agreement between the two sets of results. This constitutes a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal setting. The free energy of maximal SYM on $S^6$ diverges in the strong coupling limit which might signify the onset of little string theory. We show how this divergence can be regularized both in QFT and in supergravity. We also consider $d=7$ with a small negative 't Hooft coupling and show that the free energy and Wilson loop vacuum expectation value agree with the results from supergravity after addressing some subtleties.

Gauge theories with 16 supersymmetries on spheres

We give a unified approach to localization of maximally symmetric gauge theories on spheres, including $S^6$ and $S^7$. The approach follows Pestun's method of dimensionally reducing from 10 dimensional super Yang-Mills. The resulting theories have a reduced $R$-symmetry which includes an $SU(1,1)$ subgroup, except in four dimensions where, because of conformal invariance, the full flat-space $R$-symmetry is maintained, and in seven dimensions where $SU(1,1)$ is the flat-space $R$-symmetry. For the case of $S^6$ and $S^7$ we discuss the localization of these theories and also present new results for the corresponding matrix models. The matrix models for $S^6$ and $S^7$ are qualitatively similar to the matrix models of a vector multiplet on $S^4$ and $S^5$ respectively. We also discuss the contributions of instantons in the six and seven dimensional cases.

Localizing gauge theories on $S^d$

We conjecture the form of the one-loop determinants for localized gauge theories with eight supersymmetries on $d$-dimensional spheres. Combining this with results for the localized action, we investigate the strong coupling behavior in the large $N$ limit for a continuous range of $d$. In particular, we find the $N$ dependence of the free energy for supersymmetric Yang-Mills with only a vector multiplet in $3<d<4$ and for maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills in $3< d<6$. We also argue that this gives an effective way to regularize divergences after localization in $d=4$ for ${\mathcal N}=2$ gauge theories and $d=6$ for the maximally supersymmetric case.

Three-point correlators from string amplitudes: Mixing and Regge spins

This paper has two parts. We first compute the leading contribution to the strong-coupling mixing between the Konishi operator and a double-trace operator composed of chiral primaries by using flat-space vertex operators for the string-duals of the operators. We then compute the three-point functions for protected or unprotected scalar operators with higher spin operators on the leading Regge trajectory. Here we see that the nontrivial spatial structures required by conformal invariance arise naturally from the form of the polarization tensors in the vertex operators. We find agreement with recent results extracted from Mellin amplitudes for four-point functions, as well as with earlier supergravity calculations. We also obtain some new results for other combinations of operators.

Phases of planar 5-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory

In this paper we investigate the large-$N$ behavior of 5-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills with a level $k$ Chern-Simons term and an adjoint hypermultiplet. As in three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories, one must choose an integration contour to completely define the theory. Using localization, we reduce the path integral to a matrix model with a cubic action and compute its free energy in various scenarios. In the limit of infinite Yang-Mills coupling and for particular choices of the contours, we find that the free-energy scales as $N^{5/2}$ for $U(N)$ gauge groups with large values of the Chern-Simons 't\,Hooft coupling, $\tildeλ\equiv N/k$. If we also set the hypermultiplet mass to zero, then this limit is a superconformal fixed point and the $N^{5/2}$ behavior parallels other fixed points which have known supergravity duals. We also demonstrate that $SU(N)$ gauge groups cannot have this $N^{5/2}$ scaling for their free-energy. At finite Yang-Mills coupling we establish the existence of a third order phase transition where the theory crosses over from the Yang-Mills phase to the Chern-Simons phase. The phase transition exists for any value of $\tildeλ$, although the details differ between small and large values of $\tildeλ$. For pure Chern-Simons theories we present evidence for a chain of phase transitions as $\tildeλ$ is increased. We also find the expectation values for supersymmetric circular Wilson loops in these various scenarios and show that the Chern-Simons term leads to different physical properties for fundamental and anti-fundamental Wilson loops. Different choices of the integration contours also lead to different properties for the loops.

5D super Yang-Mills theory and the correspondence to AdS$_7$/CFT$_6$

We study the relation between 5D super Yang-Mills theory and the holographic description of 6D (2,0) superconformal theory. We start by clarifying some issues related to the localization of N=1 SYM with matter on $S^5$. We concentrate on the case of a single adjoint hypermultiplet with a mass term and argue that the theory has a symmetry enlargement at mass M=1/(2r), where r is the $S^5$ radius. However, in order to have a well-defined localization locus it is necessary to rotate M onto the imaginary axis, breaking the enlarged symmetry. Based on our prescription, the imaginary mass values are physical and we show how the localized path integral is consistent with earlier results for 5D SYM in flat space. We then compute the free energy and the expectation value for a circular Wilson loop in the large N limit. The Wilson loop calculation shows a mass dependent constant rescaling between weak and strong coupling. The Wilson loop continued back to to the enlarged symmetry point is consistent with a supergravity computation for an M2 brane using the standard identification of the compactification radius and the 5D coupling. If we continue back to the physical regime and use this value of the mass to determine the compactification radius, then we find agreement between the SYM free energy and the corresponding supergravity calculation. We also verify numerically some of our analytic approximations.

Holographic three-point functions for short operators

We consider holographic three-point functions for operators dual to short string states at strong coupling in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We treat the states as point-like as they come in from the boundary but as strings in the interaction region in the bulk. The interaction position is determined by saddle point, which is equivalent to conservation of the canonical momentum for the interacting particles, and leads to conservation of their conformal charges. We further show that for large dimensions the rms size of the interaction region is small compared to the radius of curvature of the AdS space, but still large compared to the string Compton wave-length. Hence, one can approximate the string vertex operators as flat-space vertex operators with a definite momentum, which depends on the conformal and R-charges of the operator. We then argue that the string vertex operator dual to a primary operator is chosen by satisfying a twisted version of Q^L=Q^R, up to spurious terms. This leads to a unique choice for a scalar vertex operator with the appropriate charges at the first massive level. We then comment on some features of the corresponding three-point functions, including the application of these results to Konishi operators.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter I.1: Spin Chains in N=4 Super Yang-Mills

In this chapter of "Review of AdS/CFT Integrability" we introduce N=4 Super Yang-Mills. We discuss the global superalagebra PSU(2,2|4) and its action on gauge invariant operators. We then discuss the computation of the correlators of certain gauge invariant operators, the so-called single trace operators in the large N limit. We show that interactions in the gauge theory lead to mixing of the operators. We compute this mixing at the one-loop level and show that the problem maps to a one-dimensional spin chain with nearest neighbor interactions. For operators in the SU(2) sector we show that the spin chain is the ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain whose eigenvalues are determined by the Bethe equations.

Supergraphs and the cubic Leigh-Strassler model

We discuss supergraphs and their relation to "chiral functions" in N=4 Super Yang-Mills. Based on the magnon dispersion relation and an explicit three-loop result of Sieg's we make an all loop conjecture for the rational contributions of certain classes of supergraphs. We then apply superspace techniques to the "cubic" branch of Leigh-Strassler N=1 superconformal theories. We show that there are order 2^L/L single trace operators of length L which have zero anomalous dimensions to all loop order in the planar limit. We then compute the anomalous dimensions for another class of single trace operators we call one-pair states. Using the conjecture we can find a simple expression for the rational part of the anomalous dimension which we argue is valid at least up to and including five-loop order. Based on an explicit computation we can compute the anomalous dimension for these operators to four loops.

Higher Loops Beyond the SU(2) Sector

We consider the case of coherent gauge invariant operators in the SU(3) and SO(4) sectors. We argue that in many cases, these sectors can be closed in the thermodynamic limit, even at higher loops. We then use a modification of the Bethe equations which is a natural generalization of a proposal put forward by Serban and Staudacher to make gauge theory predictions for the anomalous dimensions for a certain class of operators in each sector. We show that the predictions are consistent with semiclassical string predictions at two loops but in general fail to agree at three loops. Interestingly, in both cases there is one point in the configuration space where the gauge theory and string theory predictions agree. In the SU(3) case it corresponds to a circular string with R-charge assignment (J,J,J).

Circular Semiclassical String Solutions on AdS_5 x S_5

We discuss two semiclassical string solutions on AdS_5\times S_5. In the first case, we consider a multiwrapped circular string pulsating in the radial direction of AdS_5, but fixed to a point on the S_5. We compute the energy of this motion as a function of a large quantum number $n$. We identify the string level with $mn$, where $m$ is the number of string wrappings. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we argue that the bare dimension of the corresponding gauge invariant operator is $2n$ and that its anomalous dimension scales as λ^{1/4}\sqrt{mn}, for large $n$. Next we consider a multiwrapped circular string pulsating about two opposite poles of the $S_5$. We compute the energy of this motion as a function of a large quantum number, $n$ where again the string level is given as $mn$. We find that the dimension of the corresponding operator is 2n(1+f(m^2λ/(2n)^2)), where f(x) is computible as a series about x=0 and where it is analytic. We also compare this result to the BMN result for large J operators.

Effective Tachyon Dynamics in Superstring Theory

A recently proposed \ell=\infty field theory model of tachyon dynamics for unstable bosonic D-branes has been shown to arise as the two-derivative truncation of (boundary)-string field theory. Using an \ell\to \infty limit appropriate to stable kinks we obtain a model for the tachyon dynamics on unstable D-branes or D-brane anti-D-brane pairs of superstring theory. The tachyon potential is a positive definite even function of the tachyon, and at the stable global minima there is no on-shell dynamics. The kink solution mimics nicely the properties of stable D-branes: the spectrum of the kink consists of infinite levels starting at zero mass, with spacing double the value of the tachyon mass-squared. It is natural to expect that this model will arise in (boundary) superstring field theory.

Asymptotic Freedom and Confinement from Type 0 String Theory

We argue that there are generic solutions to the type 0 gravity equations of motion that are confining in the infrared and have log scaling in the ultraviolet. The background curvature generically diverges in the IR. Nevertheless, there exist solutions where higher order string corrections appear to be exponentially suppressed in the IR with respect to the leading type 0 gravity terms. For these solutions the tachyon flows to a fixed value. We show that the generic solutions lead to a long range linear quark potential, magnetic screening and a discrete glueball spectrum. We also estimate some WKB glueball mass ratios and compare them to ratios found using finite temperature models and lattice computations.

Glueball Mass Spectra and Other Issues for Supergravity Duals of QCD Models

We derive WKB expressions for glueball masses of various finite temperature supergravity models. The results are very close to recent numerical computations. We argue that the spectra has some universality that depends only on the dimension of the AdS space and the singularity structure of the horizon. This explains the stability of the $0^{++}$ glueball mass ratios between various models. We also consider the recently proposed nonsupersymmetric model arising from the type 0 string. In the supergravity limit of this model, the heavy quark potential has an effective coupling with 1/(log u) behavior in the UV. Unfortunately, the supergravity solution implies that the heavy quark potential is still coulombic in the infrared, with an effective coupling of order 1. We also argue that the type 0 supergravity background solution does not have normalizable glueball solutions.

Superconformal Fixed Points with E_n Global Symmetry

We obtain the elliptic curve and the Seiberg-Witten differential for an $N=2$ superconformal field theory which has an $E_8$ global symmetry at the strong coupling point $τ=e^{πi/3}$. The differential has 120 poles corresponding to half the charged states in the fundamental representation of $E_8$, with the other half living on the other sheet. Using this theory, we flow down to $E_7$, $E_6$ and $D_4$. A new feature is a $λ_{SW}$ for these theories based on their adjoint representations. We argue that these theories have different physics than those with $λ_{SW}$ built from the fundamental representations.
