On weakly almost square Banach spaces

We prove some results on weakly almost square Banach spaces and their relatives. On the one hand, we discuss weak almost squareness in the setting of Banach function spaces. More precisely, let $(Ω,Σ)$ be a measurable space, let $E$ be a Banach lattice and let $ν:Σ\to E^+$ be a non-atomic countably additive measure having relatively norm compact range. Then the space $L_1(ν)$ is weakly almost square. This result applies to some abstract Cesàro function spaces. Similar arguments show that the Lebesgue-Bochner space $L_1(μ,Y)$ is weakly almost square for any Banach space~$Y$ and for any non-atomic finite measure~$μ$. On the other hand, we make some progress on the open question of whether there exists a locally almost square Banach space which fails the diameter two property. In this line we prove that if $X$ is any Banach space containing a complemented isomorphic copy of~$c_0$, then for every $0<\varepsilon<1$ there exists an equivalent norm $|\cdot|$ on~$X$ satisfying: (i)~every slice of the unit ball $B_{(X,|\cdot|)}$ has diameter~$2$; (ii) $B_{(X,|\cdot|)}$ contains non-empty relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter; and (iii)~$(X,|\cdot|)$ is $(r,s)$-SQ for all $0<r,s < \frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\varepsilon}$.

On weak compactness in projective tensor products

We study the property of being strongly weakly compactly generated (and some relatives) in projective tensor products of Banach spaces. Our main result is as follows. Let $1<p,q<\infty$ be such that $1/p+1/q\geq 1$. Let $X$ (resp., $Y$) be a Banach space with a countable unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition having a disjoint lower $p$-estimate (resp., $q$-estimate). If $X$ and $Y$ are strongly weakly compactly generated, then so is its projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$.

Topological properties in tensor products of Banach spaces

Given two Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, we analyze when the projective tensor product $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ has Corson's property (C) or is weakly Lindelöf determined (WLD), subspace of a weakly compactly generated (WCG) space or subspace of a Hilbert generated space. For instance, we show that: (i) $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is WLD if and only if both $X$ and $Y$ are WLD and all operators from $X$ to $Y^*$ and from $Y$ to $X^*$ have separable range; (ii) $X\widehat{\otimes}_πY$ is subspace of a WCG space if the same holds for both $X$ and $Y$ under the assumption that every operator from $X$ to $Y^*$ is compact; (iii) $\ell_p(Γ)\widehat{\otimes}_π\ell_q(Γ)$ is subspace of a Hilbert generated space for any $1< p,q<\infty$ such that $1/p+1/q<1$ and for any infinite set $Γ$. We also pay attention to the injective tensor product $X\widehat{\otimes}_\varepsilon Y$. In this case, the stability of property (C) and the property of being WLD turn out to be closely related to the condition that all regular Borel probability measures on the dual ball have countable Maharam type. Along this way, we generalize a result of Plebanek and Sobota that if $K$ is a compact space such that $C(K\times K)$ has property (C), then all regular Borel probability measures on $K$ have countable Maharam type. This generalization provides a consistent negative answer to a question of Ruess and Werner about the preservation of the $w^*$-angelicity of the dual unit ball under injective tensor products.

$\varepsilon$-weakly precompact sets in Banach spaces

A bounded subset $M$ of a Banach space $X$ is said to be $\varepsilon$-weakly precompact, for a given $\varepsilon\geq 0$, if every sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ in $M$ admits a subsequence $(x_{n_k})_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ such that $$ \limsup_{k\to \infty}x^*(x_{n_k})-\liminf_{k\to\infty}x^*(x_{n_k}) \leq \varepsilon $$ for all $x^*\in B_{X^*}$. In this paper we discuss several aspects of $\varepsilon$-weakly precompact sets. On the one hand, we give quantitative versions of the following known results: (a) the absolutely convex hull of a weakly precompact set is weakly precompact (Stegall), and (b) for any probability measure $μ$, the set of all Bochner $μ$-integrable functions taking values in a weakly precompact subset of $X$ is weakly precompact in $L_1(μ,X)$ (Bourgain, Maurey, Pisier). On the other hand, we introduce a relative of a Banach space property considered by Kampoukos and Mercourakis when studying subspaces of strongly weakly compactly generated spaces. We say that a Banach space $X$ has property $\mathfrak{KM}_w$ if there is a family $\{M_{n,p}:n,p\in \mathbb{N}\}$ of subsets of $X$ such that: (i) $M_{n,p}$ is $\frac{1}{p}$-weakly precompact for all $n,p\in \mathbb{N}$, and (ii) for each weakly precompact set $C \subseteq X$ and for each $p\in \mathbb{N}$ there is $n\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $C \subseteq M_{n,p}$. All subspaces of strongly weakly precompactly generated spaces have property $\mathfrak{KM}_w$. Among other things, we study the three-space problem and the stability under unconditional sums of property $\mathfrak{KM}_w$.

Isometric factorization of vector measures and applications to spaces of integrable functions

Let $X$ be a Banach space, $Σ$ be a $σ$-algebra, and $m:Σ\to X$ be a (countably additive) vector measure. It is a well known consequence of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure that there exist a reflexive Banach space $Y$, a vector measure $\tilde{m}:Σ\to Y$ and an injective operator $J:Y \to X$ such that $m$ factors as $m=J\circ \tilde{m}$. We elaborate some theory of factoring vector measures and their integration operators with the help of the isometric version of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure. Along this way, we sharpen a result of Okada and Ricker that if the integration operator on $L_1(m)$ is weakly compact, then $L_1(m)$ is equal, up to equivalence of norms, to some $L_1(\tilde m)$ where $Y$ is reflexive; here we prove that the above equality can be taken to be isometric.

A class of weakly compact sets in Lebesgue-Bochner spaces

Let $X$ be a Banach space and $μ$ a probability measure. A set $K \subseteq L^1(μ,X)$ is said to be a $δ\mathcal{S}$-set if it is uniformly integrable and for every $δ>0$ there is a weakly compact set $W \subseteq X$ such that $μ(f^{-1}(W)) \geq 1-δ$ for every $f\in K$. This is a sufficient, but in general non necessary, condition for relative weak compactness in $L^1(μ,X)$. We say that $X$ has property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$) if every relatively weakly compact subset of $L^1(μ,X)$ is a $δ\mathcal{S}$-set. In this paper we study $δ\mathcal{S}$-sets and Banach spaces having property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$). We show that testing on uniformly bounded sets is enough to check this property. New examples of spaces having property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$) are provided. Special attention is paid to the relationship with strongly weakly compactly generated (SWCG) spaces. In particular, we show an example of a SWCG (in fact, separable Schur) space failing property ($δ\mathcal{S}_μ$) when $μ$ is the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$.

Convex combinations of weak*-convergent sequences and the Mackey topology

A Banach space $X$ is said to have property (K) if every $w^*$-convergent sequence in $X^*$ admits a convex block subsequence which converges with respect to the Mackey topology. We study the connection of this property with strongly weakly compactly generated Banach spaces and its stability under subspaces, quotients and $\ell^p$-sums. We extend a result of Frankiewicz and Plebanek by proving that property (K) is preserved by $\ell^1$-sums of less than $\mathfrak{p}$ summands. Without any cardinality restriction, we show that property (K) is stable under $\ell^p$-sums for $1<p<\infty$.

Tukey classification of some ideals in $ω$ and the lattices of weakly compact sets in Banach spaces

We study the lattice structure of the family of weakly compact subsets of the unit ball $B_X$ of a separable Banach space $X$, equipped with the inclusion relation (this structure is denoted by $\mathcal{K}(B_X)$) and also with the parametrized family of almost inclusion relations $K \subseteq L+εB_X$, where $ε>0$ (this structure is denoted by $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$). Tukey equivalence between partially ordered sets and a suitable extension to deal with $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ are used. Assuming the axiom of analytic determinacy, we prove that separable Banach spaces fall into four categories, namely: $\mathcal{K}(B_X)$ is equivalent either to a singleton, or to $ω^ω$, or to the family $\mathcal{K}(\mathbb{Q})$ of compact subsets of the rational numbers, or to the family $[\mathfrak{c}]^{<ω}$ of all finite subsets of the continuum. Also under the axiom of analytic determinacy, a similar classification of $\mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ is obtained. For separable Banach spaces not containing $\ell^1$, we prove in ZFC that $\mathcal{K}(B_X) \sim \mathcal{AK}(B_X)$ are equivalent to either $\{0\}$, $ω^ω$, $\mathcal{K}(\mathbb{Q})$ or $[\mathfrak{c}]^{<ω}$. The lattice structure of the family of all weakly null subsequences of an unconditional basis is also studied.

Measurability in C(2^k) and Kunen cardinals

A cardinal k is called a Kunen cardinal if the sigma-algebra on k x k generated by all products AxB, coincides with the power set of k x k. For any cardinal k, let C(2^k) be the Banach space of all continuous real-valued functions on the Cantor cube 2^k. We prove that k is a Kunen cardinal if and only if the Baire sigma-algebra on C(2^k) for the pointwise convergence topology coincides with the Borel sigma-algebra on C(2^k) for the norm topology. Some other links between Kunen cardinals and measurability in Banach spaces are also given.
