A study of stability in locally $L^0$-convex modules and a conditional version of James' compactness theorem

Locally $L^0$-convex modules were introduced in [D. Filipovic, M. Kupper, N. Vogelpoth. Separation and duality in locally $L^0$-convex modules. J. Funct. Anal. 256(12), 3996-4029 (2009)] as the analytic basis for the study of conditional risk measures. Later, the algebra of conditional sets was introduced in [S. Drapeau, A. Jamneshan, M. Karliczek, M. Kupper. The algebra of conditional sets and the concepts of conditional topology and compactness. J. Math. Anal. Appl. 437(1), 561-589 (2016)]. In this paper we study locally $L^0$-convex modules, and find exactly which subclass of locally $L^0$-convex modules can be identified with the class of locally convex vector spaces within the context of conditional set theory. Second, we provide a version of the classical James' theorem of characterization of weak compactness for conditional Banach spaces. Finally, we state a conditional version of the Fatou and Lebesgue properties for conditional convex risk measures and, as application of the developed theory, we stablish a version of the so-called Jouini-Schachermayer-Touzi theorem for robust representation of conditional convex risk measures defined on a $L^\infty$-type module.

One side James' Compactness Theorem

We present some extensions of classical results that involve elements of the dual of Banach spaces, such as Bishop-Phelp's theorem and James' compactness theorem, but restricting to sets of functionals determined by geometrical properties. The main result, which answers a question posed by F. Delbaen, is the following: Let $E$ be a Banach space such that $(B_{E^\ast}, ω^\ast)$ is convex block compact. Let $A$ and $B$ be bounded, closed and convex sets with distance $d(A,B) > 0$. If every $x^\ast \in E^\ast$ with \[ \sup(x^\ast,B) < \inf(x^\ast,A) \] attains its infimum on $A$ and its supremum on $B$, then $A$ and $B$ are both weakly compact. We obtain new characterizations of weakly compact sets and reflexive spaces, as well as a result concerning a variational problem in dual Banach spaces.

Strictly convex norms and topology

We introduce a new topological property called (*) and the corresponding class of topological spaces, which includes spaces with $G_δ$-diagonals and Gruenhage spaces. Using (*), we characterise those Banach spaces which admit equivalent strictly convex norms, and give an internal topological characterisation of those scattered compact spaces $K$, for which the dual Banach space $C(K)^*$ admits an equivalent strictly convex dual norm. We establish some relationships between (*) and other topological concepts, and the position of several well-known examples in this context. For instance, we show that $C(\mathcal{K})^*$ admits an equivalent strictly convex dual norm, where $\mathcal{K}$ is Kunen's compact space. Also, under the continuum hypothesis CH, we give an example of a compact scattered non-Gruenhage space having (*).
