Polaritonic Waveguide Emits Super-Planckian Thermal Radiation

Classical Planck's theory of thermal radiation predicts an upper limit of the heat transfer between two bodies separated by a distance longer than the dominant radiation wavelength (far-field regime). This limit can be overcome when the dimensions of the absorbent bodies are smaller than the dominant wavelength due to hybrid electromagnetic waves, known as surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs). Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the far-field radiative heat transfer between two non-absorbent bodies can also overcome Planck's limit, by coating them with an absorbent material to form a polaritonic waveguide. This super-Planckian far-field thermal radiation is confirmed by measuring the radiative thermal conductance between two silicon plates coated with silicon dioxide nanolayers. The observed conductance is twice higher than Planck's limit and agrees with the predictions of our model for the SPhP waveguide modes. Our findings could be applied to thermal management in microelectronics and silicon photonics.

Quantum thermal transistor

We demonstrate that a thermal transistor can be made up with a quantum system of 3 interacting subsystems , coupled to a thermal reservoir each. This thermal transistor is analogous to an electronic bipolar one with the ability to control the thermal currents at the collector and at the emitter with the imposed thermal current at the base. This is achieved determining the heat fluxes by means of the strong-coupling formalism. For the case of 3 interacting spins, in which one of them is coupled to the other 2, that are not directly coupled, it is shown that high amplification can be obtained in a wide range of energy parameters and temperatures. The proposed quantum transistor could, in principle, be used to develop devices such as a thermal modulator and a thermal amplifier in nano systems.

Steady State and Modulated Heat Conduction in Layered Systems Predicted by the Phonon Boltzmann Transport Equation

Based on the phonon Boltzmann transport equation under the relaxation time approximation, analytical expressions for the temperature profiles of both steady state and modulated heat conduction inside a thin film deposited on a substrate are derived and analyzed. It is shown that both steady state and modulated components of the temperature depend strongly on the ratio between the film thickness and the average phonon mean free path, and they exhibit the diffusive behavior as predicted by the Fourier law of heat conduction when this ratio is much larger than the unity. In contrast, in the ballistic regime when this ratio is comparable to or smaller than the unity, the steady-state temperature tends to be independent of position, while the amplitude and the phase of the modulated temperature appear to be lower than those determined by the Fourier law. Furthermore, we derived an invariant of heat conduction and a simple formula for the cross-plane thermal conductivity of dielectric thin films, which could be a useful guide for understanding and optimizing the thermal performance of the layered systems. This work represents the Boltzmann transport equation-based extension of the Rosencwaig and Gerko work [J. Appl. Phys. 47, 64 (1976)], which is based on the Fourier law and has widely been used as the theoretical framework for the development of photoacoustic and photothermal techniques. This work might shed some light on developing a theoretical basis for the determination of the phonon MFP and relaxation time using ultrafast laser-based transient heating techniques.

Quantized Thermal Conductance of Nanowires at Room Temperature due to Surface Phonon-Polaritons

Based on the Landauer formalism, we demonstrate that the thermal conductance due to the propagation of surface phonon-polaritons along a polar nanowire is independent of the material characteristics and is given by Pi^2kB^2T/3h. The giant propagation length of these energy carriers establishes that this quantization holds not only for a temperature much smaller than 1 K, as is the case of electrons and phonons, but also for temperatures comparable to room temperature, which can significantly facilitate its observation and application in the thermal management of nanoscale electronics and photonics.
